Thomas Vermaelen says that although the team have suffered two defeats in a row, there’s no issue with the team’s mentality or approach the games.
The results have been poor and the performances well below the expected level, but the captain is confident that good results will return and provide a boost to the team.
Speaking in today’s match day programme, the skipper said, “I should stress that the last two results have not been about our mentality. Everybody here works hard, and I can honestly say the attitude in this group is fantastic.
“A few weeks ago we payed a good game at West Ham and won 3-1, and you don’t lose that in the space of seven days. Two negative results can pull you down very quickly in football, but a couple of good games will do exactly the opposite.
“Of course it’s been a disappointing, frustrating week but we know we have the quality to get back on track. We’ve had a busy schedule recently, with international games preceding the Norwich and Schalke matches, but that’s no excuse.
“We’ll go into today’s game feeling fresh and trying to get three points.”
And the Belgian urged fans to back the team today as they look to get one over on Mark Hughes team.
“Thanks for your support over the last week – it’s never easy when the team loses but you have done us proud as ever. Please get behind us with everything you have today and we’ll do our best to get back to winning ways.”

The Arsenal match-day programme is available to download on iPad and it’s quite excellent – click here for details.
“and we’ll do our best to get back to winning ways”….if this will involve your marauding forward runs leaving Bobby “i just have to score against Arsenal” Zamora to do the business on the other end then dont!.
But a win is really important today….wait..i said this before schalke, okay then just go out there and play……..to Win. I’m confused.
Stop trying to think then. Just cheer them on. The Verminator demands it.
I will, especially now that wilshere is starting!…COYG!
This feels like the first time I’m actually hearing the captain inside Vermaelen speak.
Vermaelen’s a role model off the pitch, but it’s the on the pitch where he needs to be more responsible. (He’s almost like the opposite of John Terry.) Less of the mental runs up the pitch at the 80th min captain!
Being the opposite of John Terry is only ever a good thing
Yeah Vermaelen, you’re the polar opposite of Joan Terry. In fact you’re a tnuC, which is a very very good thing. Chelsea have never had a tnuC and they never will because they lack class while having an overabundance of vaginalism.
He should really look to be a leader who leads by example. Step one is fixing his game. The last two games haven’t really been some of he’s best work. We need everyone to step up today. MASSIVELY.
anything less than 3-0 today consider it as a loss captain. creativity is the issue not mentally
Look, I know that you really mean “Go out there and win BIG. We would like a BIG win to make us all feel better.” but you put this really poorly.
anything less than 3-0 today consider it as a loss captain. creativity is the issue not mentality
What sort of comment is “anything less than 3-0 consider it a loss” Some AFC
fans need to get in the real world.
Honestly, he’s a terrible captain. Poor at the heart of defence as well.
He is not a terrible captein but he is not the best either. I would rather have seen Arteta made skipper as he more mature and has more exsperience in the Premier than Vermaelen.
Vermaelen is also not as a good defender as most want us tobelive.
Shut up, just shut up…..vermaelen is a good defender. Don’t let constant his unfortunate mis-haps let you think otherwise. God! this arsenal fans, such chameleons!. Kompany right now is not at his best but that doesn’t he’s all over sudden not among the best.
Vermaelen is okay to be my captain, Arteta too is excellent but right now it’s vermaelen…deal with it! Class as they say is permanent.
well, he didn’t say that he is a bad defender, did he? but ‘unfortunate mishaps’ is maybe a tad euphemistic, no? it’s fact that he needs to step up his defensive game, in order to be a role model on the pitch that younger players look up to. I hate to say it, but such as rvp was last season. I think he can be a excellent defender and a good captain, but I too would have liked Arteta as captain because I think, at the moment, he’s just more convinving in his role.
How dare you call yourself ARSENAL and then insult our Captain. Get back under your rock.
Is it a coincidence that all the snidiest, pseudo-Spurs un-Arsenal comments come from people with such little wit that they choose simple names such as ARSENAL and GOONER, in Uppercase, no less, as if they were trying to kid us into thinking they “really are Arsenal fans. Honest”?
i think he needs to tame his runs as well, but it is not necessarily a bad thing he shows so much passion to get the team ahead. if he were to score a hattrick today, would everyone be using him as a scapegoat for the teams performances?
Depends if we ended up losing 4-3 :p
Your all full of shit.. Arsenal
will smash QPR today !
Can I be the first to say this.
Santi cazorla will not score a cracker today, he will create something sublime for podolski today.
I doubt his wife would be happy if he scored a cracker. Can you be sublime three or four times in a game, or does it have to be given a new name if it keeps happening?
I want him to be sublime every couple of minutes until his sublime is dripping from the QPR defenders in big gooey dollops and they beg to be substituted by anybody, even Arsenal players.
I still dont know how Verm is as a captain, but I certainly do hope his performances as a defender get better, because as the captain, he cant exactly be benched due to loss of form, so we’re kinda stuck with him. I really do like him, but from what I hear and read, his lapses are kind of costly for us.
He is my captain because he used to be vice captain of the silly dutch.
He is also senior in Arsenal, commited to sign contract without asking he will be in the first team forever. He is role model. He is Arsenal without but.

I think we were shit because we chose Gerbinho in the middle over Giroud. Not that I think Gervinho is not a good player. He is. But he just doesn’t fuck with the positioning of the opposition defence the way Giroud does. Giroud makes them run around like chickens with their heads chopped off. Gervinho lets them stand where they want and then runs at them and tries to sneak between them, hoping the don’t notice him perhaps 🙂 Gervinho thinks “I’m in the middle now, my job is to get into positions to score goals”. Giroud thinks “I’m in… Read more »
Gervinho, giroud they’re all very much average. We lack a real goal poacher, someone to take 80% of goal chances presented to him.
I don’t believe that. Gervinho gives us something we don’t have, when he’s on the outside of a front three (but not in the middle when he’s essentially taking Giroud’s place away from him). Giroud works harder than many of our players. He shows exactly the sort of effort we need our whole team to show, and he makes space for Cazorla to shine. He has also started scoring goals (just at the time AW decides to start experimenting with Gervinho through the centre, strange timing). I’m not going to argue with you about a poacher. I’d love one. But… Read more »
…and what I really pray isn’t happening is that by January AW will say “I feel I do not need to buy a striker because I have two good players who can do that job. Both Giroud and Grevinho have played in that position for us, and both show great potential” They ARE good players and they should be regulars in the team (but not as one or the other, because that might turn Giroud into a Chamakh), but we should buy a proper out-and-out goalscoring monster (no idea who though), and play Podolski and Giroud with him, while Cazorla… Read more »
Haha, I meant to say “I do believe that. Gervinho gives us something we don’t have…”. I like him as a player, but I’m not sure I like him as a center forward, and I certainly don’t like him being played there just at a time when Giroud should be / was hitting some goalscoring form and showing us how good he is.
Man these new players have made Arsenal too too toooooo much slow!
Again no decent Creativity in 1st half….
vl Any 1 Explain Y in mid except Jack no 1 dare to dribble past defender???? Take ball on sides n thn pass back…WTF
