Jack Wilshere’s first goal since returning from injury not only helped Arsenal on their way to the knockout stages of the Champions League but also earned the young midfielder praise from both Arsene Wenger and Laurent Koscielny.
The 20-year-old, much like the rest of midfield, was made to work hard in the first half by an energetic Montpellier, but after latching onto Olivier Giroud’s knock down to open the scoring just after the break the England international grew in confidence.
Reflecting on Jack’s performance in the post-game press conference the boss admitted that it took a little time for his young charge to find his feet.
“He had a difficult start in the game and after that he got stronger and stronger. You could see after the goal he was more confident. I don’t worry too much about his confidence levels, because that is one of his strengths.”
Asked if Wilshere’s goal was a sign of things to come, Wenger continued:
“He should not be too obsessed by that. He defended well, he is the kind of player who has to be a complete midfielder not purely an offensive player. I am quite happy with his performance because the goals will come naturally.
“I don’t know [if he’s back to his best. For example, in our last game against Tottenham, I felt after 60 minutes that he lacked a bit of petrol. I didn’t feel that here. He didn’t drop his level so he must not be far away from being at his best. I still have to manage him in the right way and not overload him with games.”
Koscielny, rarely one for superfluous adjectives, added: “I’m very happy because Jack lost more than a year with injury.
“He’s a very good player. He’s young and has a long career in front of him. He played well for the team and it’s good he scored.”
So good to have Jack back 🙂
I didn’t see the game unfortunately, so followed on liveblog and bbc. Guess I wasn’t paying attention properly because I thought the score was still nil all when the beeb showed a stat to suggest Wilshire hadn’t scored in two years or so. Thought that was a little fucking harsh, which combined with me sat by the photocopier at work and what I thought was Arsenal goal less didn’t help my mood one bit. Then I actually took the time to read the liveblog properly, realised he’d scored and all was well again in my morning (kiwi time). That’ll teach… Read more »
giroud is such a team player-great signing, him and podolski really starting to gel brilliantly. And careful with Jack!oh for a titanium diaby, what a team it would be!
fairly recent gooner, next time just call in sick because of ‘footballing reasons’.
If your employer needs further clarification, give him gazidis’s number.
Good advice. I don’t have his number, but I’ll ask Arsene for it. Cheers.
Jacks back baby, Jacks back!

The Jack is back!
Kos was looking the sharp defender we love! I would love to see him back to his best. He deserves so much praise for yesterday.
Glad to see jack doing what he does best, and by that i mean tackling and turning with the ball to open up space with neat touches, flicks and drags. granted he gave the ball away alot in first half but think that was just abit rustiness and still not understanding his team mates. After xmas if he stays fit we will see a much sharper fitter aggressive jack who has a better understanding with the team. Long live king jack 😀
@ A-Gun
I know what you mean. Kos was epic and showed so much pace. I would go as far to say that he is now our best defender as verm is having a rough time even before he went to left back. but you cant drop your captain and per is diff and valuable to team. so what would you do? could play verm as a holding mid? worth a try 🙂
i’ll probably get thumbed down for this but i agree with you.. Maybe start with the same back 4.. sagna, mert, kos and verm.. Then to inject some impertous to a game.. Sub to bring on gibbs.. Verm moves to DM so arteta pushes up.. and gibbs helps podolski out.. 2 birds 1 stone.. But who do you sub is the big conundrum.. Coz you will have to take off a midfielder for that move.. Carzola or wilshere..? Hard hey.. Options options options.. Loving this arsenal team at the moment..!!! C.O.Y.G
Can’t wait till jacks 100% fit, future captain
Before that we have to extend his contract for another 4 years asap!!!
Surprised at the lack of comments after the last two matches on how odd it is that SZCZ was even considered in a battle with Mannone. He will make mistakes and he is not close to being what he could be yet but just compare his control of the defence at set plays with Mannone’s passivity. Or that moment early on last night when he came haring off his line and put it into touch- Mannone would’ve stayed back on his line and had to face a one-on-one.
No competition for me.
Jack is definately looking better and better but i still feel it will be another 4-5 games before he’s really flying. it was also interesting to notice the difference in the play at 0-0 and when we were 2-0 up. I know it’s an obvious statement but you could see the confidence at the end of the game. there was a section of play on the touchline when Arsenal kept the ball within 4 players in a really tight space and eventually won a free-kick. It’s this type of confidence we need to take into the next game and start… Read more »
Arsenal Southafrica: thumbs down for one reason only, it’s CAZORLA and nothing else, know your team,I find it so disrespectful when people go around mumbling about tactics when u first need to get back to elementary school…
I also think Wengers words today about Wilshere being a ‘complete midfielder’ are very clever, because he’s obviously boosting the lad ‘s confidence by saying it ,but he’s also saying, “don’t forget you have a defensive job to do as much as an attacking one”.
He’s giving him that responsibility to be a box-to-box midfielder but warning him not to get too far forward too often.
At least, that’s what i read into it, maybe i’m completely wrong!

Kos’s runs from the back to opposition area – woof!
BFG’s shimmy – fucking hell!
Once Diaby and Gibbs are back we have one hell of a team AND squad, probably just need one or two signings in Jan (esp LB).
The future looks good.
Arsene knows.
