Ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League clash with Montpellier, Per Mertesacker has welcomed the return of Wojciech Szczesny in goal, calling the Pole one of the best he’s ever seen.
Szczesny played his first game since mid-September when he lined up against Sp*rs last weekend, and while praising Vito Mannone, the German is glad to have the official number 1 back.
“We need a good squad in general, we missed Wojciech but Vito did well also. At the beginning of the season we had a good selection, then a few injuries that were not so good for us.
“He’s good technically, his goalkeeping is very good, he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. He’s a modern one, that means he’s technically good, can open up and build up a game very well, and his communication is very good.
“We have to now show that on the pitch, that the communication and understanding is good.”
The BFG was also asked about his goal against Sp*rs, and whether or not he felt he had to make up for an error leading up to Adebayor’s opener.
“It was kind of relief,” he said. “In the modern game set pieces are getting more important so you try and do your best as a defender. To try and make a difference.
“When you make a mistake you have to switch on quickly and do your best for the team. It shows your responsibility and respect for everybody.”
And he was under no illusions about the importance of tomorrow night’s game.
“This is a very important game for the team. In this part of the season, it is vital to win games. We want to climb up the league table and be in the last 16 of the Champions League.
“The group is still open for the teams, and we have to show we can go through and make clear that Arsenal will go to the next round. We need another good result for us.”

Such a shame that Gibbs seems to be injury prone, if leaves these problems behind and Jenkinson continues his development, they could form a fantastic fullback partnership for many years.
We need to replace santos with either an able back up to gibbs or make gibbs the able back up to someone like leighton baines. moving your capatain from his favoured position is not the answer. At the moment we only really have 6 defenders sagna jenkinson mertesacker koscielny vermaelen gibbs. wenger seems to have lost faith in santos djourou and squillaci whilst he obviously is still reluctant to promote the likes of bellerin angha miquel meade hajrovic boateng bhimoutine and monteiro.
