Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the decision to rest Jack Wilshere against Fulham was merely precautionary following a hectic start to the season.
The midfielder played 90 minutes against Aston Villa and Fenerbahce inside five days and having already played a half for England against Scotland was showing a visible drop in his statistical performance.
Having had his fingers burnt fielding Wilshere too frequently after previous injuries (and now well aware that the 21-year-old’s youthful exuberance sees him fib to the medical team about his condition), the boss remarked:
“It is difficult because you don’t know how the body responds and when a player plays a good game he wants to continue.
“We have a good communication between him and the medical department. He played 45 minutes for England after two 90-minute [games].
“He had not played 90 since February. The numbers suggested he needed a breather.”
Given Arsenal merely need to close out tomorrow’s second-leg against Fenerbahce, Arseblog News would be surprised if Wilshere starts the game. Wenger has stated already that he’ll make very few changes from the Fulham game suggesting the likes of Ramsey, Rosicky and Cazorla may get more minutes.
Given the Spaniard’s lack of a pre-season and the Czech’s injury record they too need to be kept in check ahead of the North London derby so expect second-half substitutions if the game seems to be going to plan.
Wilshere should be rested for the spuds game
Yes sir. We need our fighters for the derby.
diaby should get a rest v fener
Sir, please get your coat!
Oh no, not me, I’ve never lost control…
There’s no need to rest any players for the Fenerbache game. We’ll have Ozil, Di Maria and a few others to come in. I fully expect us to sign 5 massive players before Sunday. It’s gonna be a crazy week of super fun happy signings!!!!!
I wish you were our manager..
I wish you were our manager..
We are a better side without wilshere at the moment. Better free flowing football, no hold ups, less interceptions, less turnovers. Better football.
I look at him sometimes and go like “pass the ball dammit, they’re coming for u”. anyway when at his best he’s classier than most. I say give him a full 90 tommorow then rest him for spuds til his arsenalistic spirit is needed in the 2nd half.
I sometimes share the “they’re coming for you!” sentiment, but I have to say that I think that is part of what makes Jack special, on his day, and I love it. Remember when he first broke into the first team? He would pull his own defender and sometimes one more out of a play before supplying the ball laterally to a player better-placed for a forward pass. In my opinion, that many of our players in the recent past haven’t (1) dribbled past defenders, or (2) otherwise pulled them out of a play, has been a contributing factor to… Read more »
An unpopular opinion, goonerdal…but one I’ve been saying, too. Wilshere should have to earn his spot back in the starting lineup, and he hasn’t done that yet.
I think he needs to work on his defense. Making one or two tackles a game is not good enough to play DM, that’s the bare minimum expected from every player on the pitch. I read some article at the end of last season about how we do worse defensively with Wilshere playing. I don’t know if it was the following article, but it covers the same points: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1678676-arsenal-are-the-gunners-better-with-or-without-jack-wilshere Anyway, I don’t think we need to be too worried. Maybe we forget that Wilshere is still only 21, perhaps because of how much he’s played for us already, but he… Read more »
How epic is it to have Rosicky fit for the start of the season? Having the choice of resting Jack is the difference here.
please, please, i beg you – touch some wood!
I wish players and fans could be rested from our club’s management of the transfer window.

Dick Law should be fresh, given his prolonged rest. Let’s hand him a run-out tomorrow.
make way for big willy!
Cant wait to come to emptycrates and fill it with poo
If you get away from your keyboard to our North London palace come matchday your very presence will ensure that.
Sandro will kill wilshere the little cunt
Go home Redknapp, you’re drunk
On the subject of Redknapp, why the hell is he on MOTD?!?!? I had few enough reasons to watch MOTD and now with Redknapp they are all nullified. I just detest the way the man refuses to look at the camera or the presenters and just arrogantly looks to the side as he addresses a question. And the number of times he has said that Spurs will finish 4th ahead of Arsenal makes me think he has an advertisement contract with the club. The fact that he has predicted Arsenal’s fall every year for the past 5 years, and it… Read more »
It’s almost as if we doesn’t have another job, like managing QPR. Oh wait…
Money.
Honestly think he’s setting AVBBVV up to protect his own (albeit suspect) rep. Not a big giver Harry.
Who the hell is a Sandra?
…and why is she a little cunt?
….she HAS a cunt
sandro’s 2nd rate
Because he didn’t write it in any comprehendible language.
Looks like the post I replied to got deleted. Carry on, sorry for what appears to be a random comment.
Sure, sure (backs away).
Such a fitting username.
I disagree with the last bit of the article, I think Wilshere will start against fenerbache, and spurs. This little break he’s had, plus the fact that the spurs game is Sunday afternoon (and therefore 5 days rest) means I think he will be fresh enough…..I could be wrong however.
Three games into the new season and talk is of resting players ?
Wilshere has, in fairness not really done anything for Arsenal since his inclusion. He doesn’t score many goals and he doesn’t set many up. I don’t really see the point to him when there is no real end product so to talk about resting him in August is a bit of a piss take for me….
A bit harsh, but not necessarily untrue. Me thinks that Wilshere is a bit overrated right now (not that’s guaranteed to get me about 100 thumbs down).
So Spurs apparently have a second offer for Bale to “consider”. Wenger probably offered them £1. Ordinarily this wouldn’t have been enough, however, he has also tempted Bale with a weekly wage of a bunch of bananas. Bale has clinically stated that he would prefer a move to Arsenal, purely because he feels that we understand his need (for bananas) better than Real Madrid’s offer of £300 000 per week. This came about when Bale tried to eat a stack of notes, only to unhappily spit them out saying: “Worst bananas ever.” Don’t hold your breath lads, I feel a… Read more »
I love you because you’re a gooner but … *cringe*
This to me makes the Cabaye chase unnecessary. We have two (three including Diaby) midfielders out (Ox & Arteta), can rest Wiltshire and still play Cazorla, Ramsey & Rosicky. Which defenders are we after, Which realistic wingers are we after, which realistic strikers are we after
He is not a county or ham, it’s Wilshere.
I think Arteta and Ramsey are our only proper DMs at the moment. You can’t count on Diaby to get a decent run without injury, Wilshere hasn’t settled into a position, DM or CM (personally I’d prefer the latter), and Frimpong doesn’t make the cut. I’d like to see us get a Diaby-type DM (minus injuries), rather than Cabaye, who is quite similar to the majority of our central midfielders, just to give us something different in that position.

y u dnt knw? itz cuz u dnt knw engerlish!
Oh bugger! You deleted that comment, and now I look like the douche!
Ha! Ha! (in Nelson’s voice)
It’s likely Spuds are trying to place some tricks here. Having realized that the sale of Real Madrid players Arsernal are going for depends highly on Transfer of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, they may like to delay the transfer as much as they could to make sure the likes of Di Maria and Ozil would not join Arsernal before our game against them or even join at all if they could delay the transfer til 2nd September. So Wenger shine ur eyes, no other club is coming for Bale, it’s only Real Madrid, Tottemham are just playing a game.… Read more »
A bit conspiracy theory for me, but I think we do have a big part to play in the Bale deal. Must be a need for Madrid to drum up some funds and if we can help them take Bale I see that as positive. Plus we would strengthen in the process!
I think it’s probably more to do with both Real Madrid and Spurs realising the Spaniards hold all the cards here. Spurs are more desperate to sell than Madrid are to buy so they’re trying to regain some negotiation strength by indicating a competing buyer.
3-0 up, at home, and NLD on Sunday? I’d be happy to see Zelalem, Gnabry and Sanogo start with the big guns on the bench just in case. Maybe even a place on the bench for Ryo?
No fucking way. Put the tie to bed first, then bring the young guns on. Anything can happen over 90 minutes and I for one do not want to risk losing our Champions League place because of hubris, especially with the wounds of the Villa match still smarting. Let’s get some solid, serious, efficient winning done – 5 days is more than enough time to recover for Sunday.
Cazorla, Ramsey and Rosicky make a good midfield trio but are going to run out of gas or get injured soon enough if they play every game. I agree that the play was faster and more fluid without Jack, who for me should model his game on DMs like Deschamps – guys who work hard, read the game well and make life easier for the creative, goal scoring players but aren’t creative or goal scoring themselves. Every team needs them. Really interesting main article from America today Blogs. Stan would back Wenger spending money. Makes sense. It’s clear that Wenger… Read more »
U aint signing anyone aaaaaahahahahahha aaaaaahahahahahha aaaaaahahahahahha
Are you in pain?
The sounds the Tottenham fan made as he tried to taunt us but fell off a cliff.
Cant wait to smash that slow lanky cunt
Hey, Mertesacker is straight didn’t you know?
Frimpong should play!!!
Arsene did say that Jacky will play tomorrow. So I’ll guess he’ll start
At this i’ll like to see the potential of Gnabry, Eisfeld and Ryo
Bit off topic but do any of you also feel that if wenger wasn’t certain of getting players in by now, decent back up like coquelin shouldn’t have been loaned out ? I thought he was quite good when he played for us..game against spurs comes to mind.energetic,a good touch and tough tackler..
With all of Wenger’s other faults, Man management is not one of then. Good call on resting Wilshere… for Sunday!
