I would like to see the ground covered statistics. Dortmund I think clearly were superior in that category.

“Run around a bit” – Harry Redknapp
Arsenal, first half – 53497
Dortmund, first half – 58283
Arsenal, second half – 52784
Dortmund, second half – 59604
Arsenal, total – 106281
Dortmund, total – 117887
They outworked us. At least they didn’t outwerk us.
Also, we had a lot of possession in between their goals which makes them run a little bit more then the team with the ball
Here’s a picture showing Ozil, Sagna and Rosicky not tracking back for Lewandowskis goal.
Warning: it’s disgusting.

Pretty sure that’s why Rosicky got the hook.
I had the feeling we would be caught out with Sagna hanging around on the right of their box the whole night, when Dortmund scored their goal he was in a different post code, he need to tak a bus to get back into position
Thanks, 7am. I’ve been wanting to see an analysis of Arsenal’s quick starts over their streak for weeks.
Interesting that Özil had a relatively quiet game yet still created the most chances and had the most passes in the final third.
Going by this Cazorla dwarfed wilshere on everything positive yet he was on the pitch for lesser minutes. Wilshere does really need to up his game.
You can’t make comparisons against Cazorla’s standards. It’d be unfair on anyone. But yes, Jackie needs to up his game in general.
actually, allow me to correct that.
Jackie’s game is of the highest level. He just need to improve on his fitness and gain some consistency.
I think we do Wilshere a disservice if we baby him just because people see him as the future of English football or a future Arsenal captain. I love the lad but he DOES need to up his game. A 65% pass completion rate for an Arsenal midfielder in a CL match is simply not acceptable.
Good thing he’s immensely talented and is only 21 😉
how did Szczesny complete passes on the attacking third? Or does long balls count?
I felt Cazorla should have started, with either Rosicky or Wilshere (preferably Rosicky) replacing him around the 60 minute mark.
Overall, hugely disappointed, but one of the positives of was how well Cazorla combined with Ozil. It’s good to know that our two most creative players can work well together.
Yep, long passes in to Giroud and Özil
Thanks for more great numerical analysis.
Really felt we lost the ball far to often and your numbers really highlight that, even during our strongest period.
Be interested to see our individual player stats in regard to loss of possession.
Thought Reus created the Mirkhitaryan goal. Created 0 chances?
If I remember rightly, Reus dispossessed Rambo on the edge of the area, the ball fell to Lewandowski, who was the one who fed it into Mkhitaryan. So technically, no Reus didn’t create the chance but I can see how you could argue that he did.
Bergkamp, it sucks to be beaten.
The Özil-Reus comp is the wrong one. Compare him to Mhiktaryan*… Reus plays the wing.
Confirms what we all knew: Wilshere and Ramsey had tough nights, Santi changed the game, and we didn’t get outplayed after the early phase (which was almost embarrassing to watch, I admit). I’d love to see where Ozil’s touches as a whole ended up (heat map?): seemed to be nonexistent until the shift to the right. But maybe that’s a wrong impression. Certainly didn’t seem to play it forward or run at people successfully until then. Was there some man-marking on him in the middle?
A gif showing touches over 90 minutes would be really neat. Let me see what I can do.

The arseblog mascot competition is just wrong! Not one of the following alternatives ar correct:
a) Gunnersaurus b) Cannondactyl or c) Victor Velociraptor
The only answer is Eboue.
Can someone please explain to me what are ball recoveries?
Thanks
It was a clear plan to play a containing strategy for first 60 then press strongly and use rapid attacks in the last 20 or so (Klopp out of picture in the stands and BD tiring). This explains the Cazorla vs Wilshere numbers. You are very unlikely to be able to dominate BD in first 20 like a Norwich or even Napoli. Ramsey early mistake not in the script. But they nearly did it. Cazorla strike of post would probably have won it if 10 cm inside. Sometimes you play for early dominance sometimes late. Very tactical game.
Is this an error, Tim?
25 – Matches Arsenal have played since the loss to Tottenham (all competitions)
20 – Won
3 – Number of times in that run that the opposition scored first (Norwich – 13 April , West Brom – 6 October, Dortmund – 22 October)
1 – win, 1 draw, 1 loss in those matches (in that order)
20 – Number of those games where Arsenal scored first which they won
Remember that there are three possible outcomes for every match. There was one 0-0 draw (Everton) and a 1-1 draw (West Brom). That said, there are some things I got wrong in my haste, I think. For example, that should read 21 times. I’ll fix it.
Thanks for the clarification. Sorry to be pedantic!
Please, be pedantic! Also, let me know when I’m wrong. Nothing wrong with correcting me.
We had a shot on goal in last column (of table)…by cazorla that hit the corner/cross bar?
Wilshere has been poor for awhile eg in being dispossessed; mis-passes, despite a great flick flick goal.
Hitting the post, crossbar, 1 inch wide or 30 feet wide are all the same: NOT shots on goal. A shot on goal has to be cleared by a defender (ala. Rosicky) or saved by a keeper.
Sorry, I sounded like a total dick in this response.
I’m really not a total dick. I’m more like 75% dick.
Love your work 7am. Tough night for us but everyone loses a game now and then. It’s all about the response – hopefully we’ll stick a few past Crystal Palace and get back on track.
Remember its statistics. Useful but not the entire picture. Passing completion rate does not entirely tell you how a player is performing. He may have failed to complete more passes than another individual but he may have been putting in a shift defensively. It’s also who you choose to pick on or focus on that colours the impression you want to make. This has always been a big gripe for me with people who follow passing statisticians too closely. How often had we had huge swathes of possession and not delivered in the past. Clearly a more holistic approach is… Read more »
