Arsene Wenger admits the Arsenal medical team will need to check over the injuries sustained by Nacho Monreal and Tomas Rosicky after both players were subbed in tonight’s 2-1 win against Aston Villa.
The Spaniard went off on 66 minutes after kicking Villa’s Ron Vlaar as he followed through on a shot with speculation suggesting he’s sustained a possible broken metatarsal which, if proved true, could rule him out for quite some time. Kieran Gibbs, himself returning from injury, came on as cover.
With two minutes remaining, and having only been introduced 16 minutes earlier, Rosicky was also forced from the field after a clash with Gabby Agbonlahor. The Czech took an arm right in the nose while contesting a header and sustained heavy bleeding and swelling which suggests his snoz is properly broken.
Speaking after the game, Wenger said: “Rosicky has a bad nose, I don’t know is it broken or not, it looks bad.”
And whether Monreal had broken a metatarsal, “I don’t know.”
Looking back at the game as a whole, Wenger admitted that it was very important to secure three points having seen every other side in the top seven win at the weekend.
“We had to give a strong response because everybody looks at you and see if you drop points because they have made their points over the weekend so the only way you can deal with that is we were a bit more under pressure when you play last.
“You know that you’re not allowed to drop any points but you can only give one answer and that is to win the game.
“It was a big win for us, it was about two different halves. The first half was about playing our game with the speed of our passing and controlling the game. The second half was more about fighting, I felt it was down a little bit to first of all a different style from Villa who played three through the middle and a very direct game.
“Maybe we were a bit too cautious just to keep the 2-0. But it was about fighting and our defenders kept us in the game.”
I really dislike Gabriel Agbonglahor, even more so now after ending Rosicky’s game, and kicking Mesut…
Admit it.
You mainly dislike Agbonlahor because he crushed that lad from One Direction in the charity game and made him puke on the sidelines.
Nah, it’s the moustache.
Lots of negative comments around about some of our players. What we must never forget is 2-1. 3 points job done .Move on
Yes our defenders are top class arsene good man Steve you the man
Unfortunately there are not enough of them. I don’t look forward to that nightmare run of fixtures in Feb/March/April with a back four of (for example) Jenkinson – Sagna – BFG – Verm and no further room for injuries or suspensions or rest. I fear that if we don’t reinforce at the back, the wheels could come off this very promising campaign in a spectacularly disappointing way.
However I might be alone in thinking that we might actually not need a striker in January…
since end of Jan 2012, Kos and Per have played together 27 times, losing none, keeping 19 clean sheets. (from bbc’s match report on last nights game) .
that is truly spectacular. that is how you win leagues. a stingy, committed pair of cb’s who play together week in, week out.
Good game, important 3 points. Some encouraging signs from ox, gnabry and Gibbs. Worried about Poldi not starting though!
Me too. He should’ve started instead of Gnabry, there is no excuse for that. Think he is trying to force Poldi out to make room and funds for Draxler.
Just when we had started to forget about the #Wengerzip he stepped out of the tunnel and reminded us.
That coat must be outrageously comfortable.
is anyone getting their coat over Wenger’s coat yet?
That zip is the real reason we are switching to Puma kits next season
How did Rosicky not get awarded a free kick, blatant elbow, not saying Agbonlahor intentionally did it either, ref let some go tonight, that’s too much though.
Ref’s letting things go is a feature of Arsenal games. Lets the boys flow on one hand but it also allows other teams to kick lumps out of us.
Nice win, COYG
Actually the ref took swift action right at the start when he carded that Villa player going in hard on Wilshere and that seemed to calm down the Villa players for the rest of the game.
Thought ref had a decent game.We did continue to play after TR was attacked so we can’t expect
them to put the ball out.
Three reasons to be happy, two to be concerned. COYG Medical Team!
yeah screw transfers this window. we need to spend everything on medical personnel and equipment!
COYMT
It’s just been peaks and troughs with the ol’ Arsenal these past few weeks, hasn’t it?
But still our boys battle on! Top of the league!
And how about he addresses Podolskis situation all this ‘he is not fit’ is not fooling anyone.
He ‘s doing OK, it’s not his fault he’s not world class. Lets get behind him, he’s our almost great player.
I agree, he’s forcing him out. Gnabry before Poldi, that’s crazy, and too much pressure on the youngster, noi matter the potential.
Can’t wait to maul maulensteen on saturday.
Rosickys tucked in shirt. Can finally put to bed the notion he really is 23. That’s got old man written all over it. Stoked for the win, need a better performance next match though, staying positive, top of the table… COYG
Alas Wenger… you pique my excitement by naming Chu Young ‘Goals’ Park on the bench only to leave him unused and unamused on the bench yet again. WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME? God knows I love you more than the suckled nourishment of a summer’s eve Arsene so please repay my faith and start Chuy in the game against Fulham. I couldn’t even enjoy the superb spectacle of the victory tonight, as I was deep in morose contemplation about the state of affairs of which Chu Young Park is in.
Also please sign El Hadjj Diouf. Peace x
hahaha! Hilarious!
I thought Sagna was class again tonight. Hope it’s nothing major for Monreal and Rosicky
It’s been open secret that AW doesn’t prepare for a particular opposition. However it would be good if some of the dark arts – like returing an ‘accidental’ elbow. Also we need to learn to keep the lead in the last few mins better – like Bayern did to us in the CL last year, away leg, keeping the ball by the corner flag, with 2 players, rather than sitting deep & inviting pressure. A bit of time wasting tactics. In this day & age in the PL where it’s so competitive – dossiers on opposition, influencing the refs, etc,… Read more »
I would rather win the league with no blemishes and without a tarnish on our reputation – with class; but you are right that we should be giving as good as we take. A few elbows here and there, a groin grab out of sight of the ref, maybe a subtle eye gouge or two
We are keeping leads well: we’ve only dropped points twice after going ahead this season (Villa and Everton).
We actually defended well in the last 15 minutes: Villa resorted to long ball hoofs and only created one worthwhile chance – the header straight at Szcesny – which resulted in a free kick to us anyway for a push on the BFG. When did Szcesny make a worthwhile save: only pot shots from distance. We looked solid though we shouldn’t have started showboating at 2-0.
Just sell Podolski if you dont want to play him Wenger. Or Swap him + cash for Draxler
And that´s what he´ll be doing (the swap/cash-deal)
Because that is a regular feature of football transfers…
This mythical 1000’s of swap/cash deals that are touted every window and invariably come to nothing are the most infuriating of the gossip by far!
#aha………………….ahahahahahahahahahahaha……………….perhaps you should look at the tabke.
exactly. he is making an idiot out of him, but intentionally. Could backfire and it’s not something we need at the moment.
# wenger’szip no boss not evryday
Injured…Walcott , Rosicky, Vermaelan, Monreal, Diaby…Just back and not match fit….Ox, Plodolski and Gibbs. Buy some players Wenger! The fans were right before and we’re right again!
morons, a large lot of you.
Just surprised the ref didn’t produce a yellow card for nasty elbowing of Rozisky
When will Wenger come to his senses? winning ain’t the end all and be all. It’s about time he took in the considerations of the fans opinions and feelings. If he can make us all happy with his team selection then we best bring in someone who will and won’t hesitate to play Podolski as a CF and will finally drop that lanky German at the back who can’t even run fast. We should play the OX at CB because he can run like proper fast, speedy Gonzalez fast. Ariba Ariba.
Genius.
How can that get thumbs down?
Probably because it wasn’t that funny…
Kids nowadays are no longer able to understand a joke. Blame it on the mindless mumblings of Justin Beiber and 1-Direction.
Why is a nose a nose, yet a toe is a meatarsal?
Castro, I sincerely hope you were joking. Whilst playing attractive football is great, when you have to sit through losing to Bradford, Blackburn and I don’t wish to remember further, you come to realise that three points is three points.
And as for the BFG, not one fan tonight would leave tonight before being allowed. Allowed is Per’s noodling appreciation.
*nodding
Because a nose is a nose but a toe isn’t a metatarsal.
Oh. No one cares?
I’ll be off then.
Yes we made it again guys…….that’s the spirit.
We will keep going and nothing can ever stop us. Fuck you agbolahor
Can’t wait to see Little Mozart dashing around the pitch wearing a Batman mask!
With those refined locks of hair waving in seemingly slow-motion like an aristocrat in the 18th century, not even the FA could be against Rosicky fulfilling such an artistic sight of perfection by, also draping a cape over his shoulders.
Little Phantom of the Opera? or maybe Phantom of the Beautiful Game maybe?
Dammit put in two maybe’s, my bad…
Rosicky playing with a cape must happen
Could certainly do without that injury for Monreal he was one of our best players last night. Rosicky’s injury not to much to worry about he’ll be wearing a phantom mask.
Do like monreal, his decision making in the final third is tops as is his final ball

For those asking….Yes, I was trying to make a funny at the expense of those who still find reason to moan after another brilliant away win. I’m sorry father I have failed you, the thumbs have spoken.
Great win we won at Cardiff and villa the two places man city lost at , injuries are coming thick and fast arteta vermalen at spuds and rosicky , monreal injured at villa squad is being stretched hopefully Rambo and arteta will be back soon but do feel we need some else in final third
Good god Astonvilla got away with some cheaky fouls! But 3 points is so crucial, specially with all the top teams winning this week.
Me thinks Nacho more likely sustained some ligament damage in the ankle than a broken portion of a toe. Wait and see… but a broken metatarsal could keep him out longer than some stretched liggies anyway, so I’m hopeful he has the lesser of evils. Now, I hear what some are saying about strengthening at the back, as opposed to along the front line (front dot??) but to be honest I feel like, depending on the severity of Nacho’s injury, that Arsenal have four solid cb (two obvious starters plus Vermaelen & Sagna) and two solid wb (Sagna & either… Read more »
