Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal: player ratings

I debated not doing these because what’s the point of 11 zeroes, but here’s how we thought the players rated in today’s thrashing at Anfield.

Don’t forget you can add your own ratings as well, have fun with that today!

Note: We are aware of the limitations of this in the mobile apps, however, open the post in your mobile browser and you can join in the fun.

Trapped in Wenger's basement

Mertesacker and Koscielny the best defensive duo in the PL? What a joke. They are shit just like the rest of our team was today.Koscielny to blame for not marking Skrtel TWICE which lead to TWO goals. After that some poor positioning by both Mertesacker and Koscielny which lead to Sterling’s first. Oh and no, Mertesacker / Koscielny weren’t even the worst players imo(if at all possible), Monreal was awful and Ozil was problable the worst player on the pitch. Am I overreacting? Maybe Any positive things I’ve seen? Away fans were great, Ox and Wilshere did OK. A very dissapointed… Read more »

Mimir

One positive thing that can happen is that like last year’s Sp*rs game, the team gets its head together and watches the replay of their abject performance and steps up from next match. And AW finally wakes up and puts Ozil and Monreal on the bench, plays Cazorla in the middle and Rosicky and Ox on the wings

Cody

We’ve taken 2 points from games against United, Chelsea, Everton, City and Liverpool since the United game. That says more about us than our current position in the table I’m afraid. We’ll need to get points from top teams if we want to win the league, thus far we havent.

kondo

last i checked we beat liverpool at home so thats 3 points, but i guess the deluded fan always has a selective memory. We lost, tough luck, lets support the team next game OMG

GunnerForever07

How come you conveniently start calculating “since the United game”? We beat Liverpool just before that.

TheRainKing

We did beat Liverpool earlier in the season to be fair.

Still, 5 points out of a possible 18 is pretty crap.

Cody

We did beat Liverpool at home and also Spurs, 6 big points against top 6 teams (the other 2 points from top 6 sides came from draw at home to everton and draw at home to chelsea). Let’s look at it this way. Last season United got 14 out of a possible 30 points from the 5 other top 6 teams. We currently have 8 out of 18 with City at home, Everton away, Spurs away and Chelsea away left to play. We absolutely need to win 2 of those 4 games, preferably City home and Chelsea away, if we… Read more »

“We’ve taken 2 points from games against United, Chelsea, Everton, City and Liverpool since the United game. That says more about us than our current position in the table I’m afraid.” Why would our performance over a smaller sample size be more indicative of our true potential than our performance over a longer period of time in the same season? We still have to play all the teams on the schedule, whether or not you happen to rate them, and we get the same points from a game regardless of opponents. “We’ll need to get points from top teams if… Read more »

Trapped in Wenger's basement

Yes you’re right. I was problable still raging when I was typing the first two lines.
I love them and they aren’t shit, but they were today.

locksley444

Did you guys even see how far up the pitch the full backs were for 2-3 goals? No defensive shielding from midfield either. The only time the centre-backs actually didnt do much was sturridge’s goal. And that was a peach of a killer pass from coutinho. Kompany or whoever you feel is the best in busines would have struggled with that.

ottgunner

I completely agree with you. The 2 full backs killed us today (particularly Monreal). When you play away from home against a team with Liverpool’s speed, the full backs should be more conservative.

goonertom

I thought i was the only one who noticed it! This the effect of having a player like giroud on the pitch, he NEEDS service, and in our game, that service often comes from the two full backs, they push up and provide width in attack. our wingers drift inside and help with build up combinations, in an attempt to overload the central areas. The result of that is if we begin an attack but the ball is nicked off one of our players just as we reach their 3rd, the full backs are already way up the pitch, and… Read more »

And there is a difference between a bad day in the office and a cataclysmic breakdown. We all saw this coming so no complaints – it’s not as if it didn’t happen last season, or the one before that…

with the left and the right

we really are the most fickle fans in the EPL, aren’t we?

Captain's Armband

Are you serious? Surely you’ve witnessed the multiple about – faces Man U and Spurs fans have pulled since the season started.

Jonnycakes82

Yet again Schez concedes a shit load, and like The Man City game nothing he could do with any of the goals. My Arse!

Igor Stepanov's career

Szczesny did nothing wrong he deserves a 5 due to some saves.

The positives:
1. No injuries
2. Suarez didn’t score
3. Ozil was excellent again, oh wait, finally he gets some criticism without the know it all’s saying how great he was off the ball.

ghanagunner

“know it all’s”….that’s a first. emphasis on the apostrophe

Glen helders soul glo

actually the way it is written is correct as he is talking about plural.

Think before you speak.

Arsepedant

Actually the way it is written is correct because you use the possessive with a gerund.

maddolove

folks should never come on comment pages immediately after a game, especially a loss. the tripe they write is very unforgivable. yes it was a disappointed game, but they are the same players who carried us through this journey to Top of the league. By the end of the weekend we maybe will be only one point from top. PS: GIve credit to Liverpool they played well. My only criticism is to Mr Ozil, who must find somewhere a” pair of hard balls” and start fighting for his team. granted he is an excellent player, but in big games he needs… Read more »

**but they are the same players who carried us through this journey to Top of the league.** I agree about saying stuff in the heat of the moment, but don’t you see that what you said there is what makes it worse? If we supported a club at the bottom of the table and this realistically was the best our team’s players could do against “big” teams then it would hurt less. The fact that we’re supposed to be a big club too and the players out there today damn well *can* perform much better is what makes the defeat… Read more »

Gunsmith

its because the team does too much talkin before the game every time. mourinho consistently claims chelsea arent in the race, keep pressure off from his player. but our players are continuously making statements. they were out of focus. perhaps seeing the light too early.

Finsbury Park Gooner

I have to agree. It makes me nervous when there are 2 page spreads with our players in the red tops leading up to the weekend. I did get the feeling, on here as well as anywhere else, that most of us were expecting to go up to Anfield and collect 3pts as a nice dovetail into DEATHRUN1. Whatever the reason, this result is clearly not a true reflection of our team, and it’s only our team who can put that straight by getting their shit together for the rest of these difficult fixtures. How we went from the second… Read more »

Ozil and Podolski are clearly capable of a lot more…. why they are not giving it, I really don’t know. When Ozil almost scored that solo goal against Southampton, his speed was incredible.. it looked like the Southampton players were going backwards, why have we only seen that speed on one occasion? Podolski can score incredible goals, so why does he only do it in 30% of games, preferring to pass rather than shoot, even though he has scored from similar positions before? This is a serious wake up call and we do need to bury Man Utd when they… Read more »

deano

Does Poldi even play 30% of games minute wise er no. He never gets a chance to get any rhythm in his game it pisses me off. Other than that totally agree with you.

RomfordPele15

We were poor undoubtedly, but the players and fans need to move on quickly and beat those shithouses on
Wednesday.

JosiahEmmy

0/10, inaability to show up on a big day.

Harsh

if you are measuring INability, don’t you mean 10/10 ?

Xhani

Sigh. All I can say is that we need a very strong rebound against United to get us back on our feet and we’ll see where we go from there. This game isn’t season defining, we’ve been great so far and can’t let this blip ruin us.

billybobjojo

Just don’t understand where these hammerings come from. We are going along great, meet one of the so called big teams and this happens! Just don’t understand. Worst thing is, everyone of those match of the day/ pundits said this would happen. And it did.

Remember the invincibles

The thug is though, that we really weren’t l in recent games we were struggling to get out of the blocks quickly often. We drew at Southampton and struggled to break down Palace. We’re getting lazy and losing our winning mentality,

Arsenal4Life

They come from a blend of fatigue, predictable tactics and lack of any real confidence for the big games, sadly

Remember the invincibles

Ozil gets a 0 from me today. He’ll I would even him a -1 if it were possible. Seriously poor.he was really very very very bad

GoonTang
deano

Seriously Mesut was shite today but spare me this why Real Madrid had to sell him crap. It’s because they needed to recoup some of the money they spent on bale. A question for you Goontag why did Real Madrid sign Mesut Ozil?

Previgo

Actually the arsenal we know, competes for fourth not trophy! We had the chance to reinforce but we didn’t, why? Because our manager thinks we are over achieving, if we had been around 7th when the window opened then you would have seen influx of signings to help us clinch 4th. I just cant understand why we couldnt do the same to help us clinch the trophy. Do you now agree that wenger can no longer lead us to a trophy? No! Probably because WENGER KNOWS BEST!

We'll dressed gooner

Why do you bother posting? Christ, this is an embarrassing loss. Still top of the table.

Previgo

All we have to do now is pick up ourselfs from the ground, get a good dusting, prepare for united, give them the best possible trashing of their lives then wait for revenge at the weekend. Personally anything less than a 3 goal margin victory against liverpool in the fa cup would be unacceptable by me, I dont know about you guys!

kafka

ya previgo, if it is unacceptable to you, i think they better do it. Entitled fool.

Captain's Armband

This is brilliant. A contributor uses Kafka as his handle, and calls someone an “entitled fool’.

Please excuse me while I have a Marxgasm.

cape town gunner

bro, no need for that, we’re all on the same team here

Harsh

i understand that we are angry, but we have to think just a moment before thumbing-up such bullshit, much less to write it

Arteta's

If we beat Liverpool 5-1 in the cup with five assists by Özil… then we would be even.

Igor Stepanov's career

personally I would have much have won today & lost in the cup

alex

I can’t really single anyone out – I think the only appropriate score is Arsenal – 1/10. The whole team played like shit. Wilshere, Ox and Szczesny at least looked like they gave a shit, granted, but even then they didn’t do anything all that positive when it mattered.

GunnerJake

Can’t win titles like this

frans

totally agreed

Captain's Armband

Szcz deserves a seven at least.

Rosicky and Gibbs each gave more than the others bar Ox and arguably Wilshere too. I’d give three of those a five and a six to the Ox.

Agree with the other marks though.

TJBgooner

Yep, when is Wenger gonna learn that our midfield is a better unit and has more bite when Rozza plays?

Neil

Newcastle 5 Man Utd 0. Mid season. Utd end up champions.

Calm down everyone.

Yes, we were shite. When I watch footy I imagine what I would do when closed down. I would panic and utter chaos would ensue. It was like 10 of me were playing for 30 minutes.

I also realised that I was wearing my spare glasses for the first time since we let 6 in against City. I left my ‘lucky’ pair at work.

So it’s all my fault. But don’t worry, I won’t forget the ‘unbeaten’ specs next from now on.

The ghost of Peter Storey

I’m old enough to remember Stoke City beating us 5-0 in the season that we won our first double. These results happen and it’s no disgrace to lose away at Liverpool (although the performance was truly dreadful). The most important thing is to beat MU on Wednesday.

Bunburyist

Great perspective from you and Neil. Abject performance, but in the context of the season, and in the context of previous champions over the years, it’s not unusual.

That said–and this has nothing to do how I feel after the game today–I don’t think I’ve ever truly believed we could win the title this season. A cup trophy seems more likely, but over the long haul, it tends to be the teams with the most resources / investment (therefore better overall squad) that takes it.

Looking forward to a good response on Wednesday.

jack jack jack

The most depressing thing is that despite our solid defence and impressive points haul so far, we haven’t really played well since early November. Maybe this beating is the kind of wake-up call we need – I don’t know what else to suggest.

billybobjojo

Ozil looks like couldn’t give a fiddlers

Aks Arsenal

Per and Kos are the best, just had a bad day..
Wenger should bench Ozil and let him come as a sub. Rocisky is the only player that should replace him. And the most important thing is that Wenger should change his tactics and game plan match by match.
COYG.. Now please give us something to cheer against WoMan Utd.

Remember the invincibles

Wenger is totally going to listen to you and change his tactics.

goonerratic

WE ARE BY FAR THE GREATEST TEAM THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN

A Yank

Just not in February.

Previgo

And i don’t understand why wenger went ahead to warn sagna before a huge game like this. Anyone has a clue??? That obviously got into sagnas mind, wenger should know better. Oh I thought wenger knows best

Oli

Yes, good work, chap. Wenger commenting on Sagna’s contract before the game probably was at the heart of the team’s worst performance all season. Nailed it!

Penguin

Season after season after season this happens. Frustrating as fuck. A loss on Wednesday and you’d have to say the league dream is over.

Pires goatee

Any “fan” who says “Arsenal won’t win the league” or even “wenger out” should automatically give up any right to celebrate anything we win. Because wenger will have won us that and if you’re not supporting you’re team to win or giving them any credit ever you shouldn’t share in the feeling of a throphy which many us don’t even need because we love Arsenal 9 years or 90 without a throphy.

King Kallstrom

Thought Ozil was excellent today…. Two effortless assists!

Dick Law

reminded me of this year’s Superbowl.

Captain's Armband

We wondered where you’d gone.

Small bit of advice, Dick. At no point in Premier League or NFL history has a wide receiver switched football codes and been converted into a striker, no matter what Stan or Tom Fox tell you. You might want to try Europe or South America in the summer instead. Offering a decent sum for a decent player might help too.

SFGiants

Sorry. As dreadful as today’s game was, the awfulness pales in comparison to that last Super Bowl.

Ryan P

Honestly all I want right now is for Liverpool to show the same performance against City and Chelsea

Chrispy

Not sure about that to be honest. If they do, we could end up forth. ‘Pools fixtures in the next month are kind to them and I cant see them dropping any points.

Lets face it, we might beat Utd on Wednesday, we wont beat Chelsea (we never do plus Hazard is on fire at the moment), and we might get something against City based on their away form.

Worrying tiimes

Arsenal4Life

After the Palace game I wrote that Ozil could play lot better if he tried a little harder and got called a moron for it. Well, whatever suits you people I’m just trying to be objective and you don’t have to resort to name calling. Also anyone who thinks that it isn’t largely Wengers fault we lost today needs to rethink. We played exactly the way they wanted us, very predictable, and exposing our weakness which every team has. Now that I’m wasted after watching this with my mates, I’m going to bed. Oh and I wore my Arsenal scarf… Read more »

Ishan

I am totally in sync with what you say. I have also said in the past that despite Ozil’s talent and vision up front, he needs to increase his work rate as well as tracking up and down because we need that when we are looking to be defensively sound. I thought he’d put a lot of work into it in the Southampton game where he was brilliant. But now I definitely think it was spurious and flukey. He really needs to get his act together.

SG

We are all disappointed but the thing is, put up against most of the other performances this season, this performance and result seems to be just a bad day in the office. You could argue that Arsene Wenger got his tactics wrong or that the mugsmashers were more motivated and fired up for this. Anyways, it’s done and no amount of caterwauling can change that. Get behind the team and pray that we smash the ailing mancs on wednesday. UTA>

Jesper

Oh come on now… Wilshere, Ox, Szczesny, arguably a few more, did all they could. It’s a team game, not their fault the rest didn’t show up. A bit harsh I think.

MTZ

No, they didn’t. You’re just remembering the 2nd half. Look at the 1st half again and they were all gone. We were 4-0 down after 20 min because everyone were completely missing.

After that it was a half decent performance that ended 1-1. So what? We had already lost at that point, can’t really give people points for effort when we’ve already conceded four goals.

Xhani

Sigh. All I can say is that we need a very strong rebound against United to get us back on our feet and we’ll see where we go from there. This game isn’t season defining, we’ve been great so far and can’t let this blip ruin us.

Gus

Zonal marking is the reason for the first two goals,it’s a dreadful system against a clever team, needs to be ditched ASAP by our manager, why play monreal when a semi fit gibbs is a better player, ozil I hope he comes good, it looks like he’s not even trying, Arteta just can’t play as a DM, and we’ve seen that wilshere struggles after injury, shorly rosicky wS the better option,, and don’t get me started on the fact we didn’t buy a striker,, I can seen 3 more defeats coming up if we continue as we are, and then… Read more »

Clockendrider

Sorry but that’s just nonsense. Italy have been marking zonally for donkey’s years. If it was down to the system, nobody would use it. It’s not as if goals are not conceded by teams employing man for man. That’s just the kind of simplistic argument the tv pundits use to stop them having to do any genuine analysis I’m afraid. They spout it, then watch it parroted up and down the land.

Dick Law

Flamini’s red card looks like a costly mistake now. Need Rambo back. Still only 3 points dropped. Rodgers must have got hold of our players’s voodoo dolls.

jack jack jack

We completely outplayed them at home, but got absolutely battered today by the same team. Counter-attacked to oblivion. Hopefully we can gather ourselves and give the Mancs a kicking midweek.

David

hey, it’s one game. Last time I checked it was only worth 3 points no matter what the score. We were shell shocked by their speed, but let’s get back to London and beat Man U mid week!

Finsbury Park Gooner

It may be only 3pts dropped but our goal difference took a hammering. You can bet your balls there won’t be a team who put 5 past Chelsea this season.

The ghost of Peter Storey

If we do win the Premiership this season it won’t be on goal difference.

Proper pissed off

How are we in the league position we are in and then put out a performance like that. My 2 kids put in more effort than that every week they play. Refund the travelling supporters, and get a bloody grip.

Tamil Tiger

I know Wenger should have bought some good players to strengthen the squad
I know that performance was not good enough
I know that it is going to hurt when you read the papers tomorrow
BUT I know that I am and always will be Arsenal–Time to get behind the boys and support them

arselove

Shame we have so many arsehole so-called fans on here..very poor game but its still only 1 game, time to stick together, dickheads

WineArse

Surely Gibbs deserves a start ahead of Monreal at this point, no?

muchadoaboutnot

In my opinion, the manager deserves to be rated poor not the players. He set the midfield up to be exposed to the fast attack of Liverpool. Looks more like the team lacked a game plan.

titus

20 mins…. 4-0

That freaking escalated quickly.

Thierry Bergkamp

Wenger deserves a 0. Sometimes I wonder if this man actually works on tactics and team shape

devil's advocate

The real issue with Ozil at the moment is not that he’s not hitting the heights of a world class player – he’s been consistently our weakest player for a while now.

He has it in him, we know that.

Some bucking up of ideas needs to be done.

Dick Law

Hate to say this, but us gooners are a very pessimistic, insecure and cynical lot. Its only 3 pints. Still a lot of drama to unfold. Stay positive folks.

WengersNoseHair

I think I need those 3 pints, mate.

monkiebeznes

It’s fucking hard not to be one after the manner of defeat and the fucking scoreline.

Mootilated

It’s only 3 points? Those 3 points could have kept us clear at the top of the table, taking into consideration the other results of the top 3. So it is not ONLY 3 points, every point is vital in this title race. It’s ”only” 3 points if we’re clear at the top of the table by 8 points or more.

Singaporegooner

There’s a difference between a lack of class and a lack of fight/attitude. And for me, I’d rather have a player with the latter attributes than the former (both would be fantastic of course). So Özil gets a big fat Ö for his performance today. The lack of fighting spirit he shows when the chips are down is worrying. (think about Fabregas and how he’d try to drag the team by the scruff of its neck if things weren’t going well). And Giroud needs to bloody buck up. Spent the whole of the recent transfer window declaring that we didn’t… Read more »

I became a fan of the club well after the glory days.. I have never seen them winning a trophy.. I only read about their best days. If i can wait patiently year after year for the good times, you all can.. Yes.. I agree we were bad..our worst performance so far this season. But..be with them. Let’s save all the doom and gloom for after Wednesday’s game. If we don’t get a result there I’d say it’s safe to push the panic button.

Mark

Certainly can’t blame Wojo much at all, made some good stops to keep the scoreline as it was and left out to dry over and over again. Wilshere needs to learn to keep composed, it’s one thing to be hard nosed and give everything you have, but his reckless play when he’s pissed off is going to get him hurt again. This was the kind of game that we really needed more team speed in all areas. Exposed everywhere. Poor Arteta, looks like injury and age have really caught up to him. I hate plastic fans. There’s being critical of the team and then there is being a complete arsehole and over the top. Wenger to stay. Arsenal are not in crisis.

Cordicalkid

UP THE GOONERS!!! One loss, we are going to lose 1st spot but still long to go, let’s focus on Man Utd and beating them on home soil at the Emirates and better performance required from all the players won’t name names because its a team game and we didn’t deliver today. Let’s respond to the critics and HAMMER UNITED this week and we’ll be ready for revenge against the Mugsmashers next Sunday. ARSENAL4LIFE!!! WIN, LOSE OR DRAW.

loose_cannon

Only Szczney, Ox and Wilshere, maybe Rosicky, left that with any real credit. It’s been coming too. Ozil is a great player but he isn’t built for the league, not yet anyway. Played with an impossibly high line, probably to compensate for the fact that we had zero pace in our attack. Incredibly complacent against liverpool’s pace and attacking impetus.

TJBgooner

Playing a high line only works when Rozza is playing because of the amount of running and pressure he applies.

lordgooner

Shocking. Can’t see us getting enough points against the big teams to win it this year. It was January last week and we’re looking a bit lightweight.

blitz

I’m not one for a panic. We’re a great side. But when teams press like Southampton, Liverpool then struggle. I think man u and Bayern could be a worry. I really hope we don’t let our heads drop for the man u game.

nijjwm

is there an option to award 0? almost everyone scores a zero for me

wxm

thanks to Ozil we had 10 players on the field form the start n liverpool breezed past us . Rosicky wud have done much better . Ozil looks like Arshavin when he was past his best … its really sad we bought another 60minute player for 40million quids

Clock End Mike

I see people praising Wilshere, and I admit he’s one, along with Ox and TR7, who tried to make something happen 2nd half. But he completely failed to protect the backs, and was supposed to. Totally missing for the first 20 mins. That Arteta-Wilshere pivot behind Özil, Chamberlain and Cazorla just didn’t work today. Also, I’d hoped we’d start Rosicky and Gibbs today, we needed to be the ones out of the blocks first. Sagna, Cazorla, Özil, Arteta, Mertesacker and Koscielny all had off days. What happened, I don’t know. Did heads drop after that opening goal? I can’t make… Read more »

I agree, Rosicky could’ve really protected the defense. I’m just going to assume he wasn’t 100% fit or some such thing, because he really seemed like a very obvious choice today, especially since Wilshere had also just returned from injury.

Heroldgoon

I disagree. Kos and Mert have lost their 1st match playing full 90 for the first time in almost 2 yrs and now suddenly they’re shit?
