Wenger: it was a difficult night

Arsene Wenger has reacted to the 2-0 defeat to Bayern, saying they had regrets as the tie got away from them for various reasons.

Arsenal started brightly and should have been ahead when awarded a penalty, and Wenger saw that as a kind of turning point.

“Tonight everything went against us,” he told Sky Sports. “We made big mistakes, but the spirit was fantastic.

“The penalty we missed killed the crowd and positive vibes. Then we’re down to 10 men, one player injured, you know we’ll suffer physically, and there’s no possibility to change.

“It was a very difficult night,  it was a game a where we showed some class but at the end of the day we lose the game.”

The manager was also unhappy at the way Arsenal conceded the 2nd goal. Laurent Koscielny pushed forward needlessly for a free kick, and Arsenal were caught out when they lost the ball

“We have a free kick with 3 minutes to go and get caught on the counter, that’s a regret we have,” said Wenger, who still refused to write off his team’s chances.

“We just have to go there and try and do what we did last year.”

Ozil has to make that spot kick.

dink arnold

I love the decision making over a penalty, he and Neuer knew each other since childhood; the mind games going on there are special. All the same, he should’ve drilled it The next penalty he takes, he has to take it strong. But the other keeper will know he missed the last 2 or 3 penalties he’s taken by cheeky kicks, he’s thinking Ozil has to drill it now, so will he try that shit a third time? As far as I’m concerned it doesn’t matter. Randomly pick a corner and hit it as hard as you can, if the… Read more »

Lasagna

Özil shouldn’t take any more penaltys at all, you somehow knew he was going to miss when he stepped up. Had the same feeling with the last spot kick he blew. To defend him though, there wasn’t many out on the pitch I would trust with a spot kick out there. Maybe Cazorla or Chambo would have been a better choice. But anyway, I think Özil should stay away from the spot kick, he seems to have no confidence at all when he steps up to take a penalty.

Toure Motors

Two penalties taken, two missed. Shouldn’t be let take one again

DCGooner

My mates and I all said Santi.

Heroldgoon

Remember Chambo taking a sweet penalty vs brom was it? Far corner stuff. Should have been him. shame he dint cost £42M.

Wenger's Zipper

I said Santi too… Actually, this is his 3rd penalty in a row to miss! I’d only let him take one in penalty shootouts.

Gunner From Another Mother

If you’re hitting it down the middle, you gotta go for power. If he hits that hard in the same spot, I think it goes in off Neur’s hand…just…ugh…

I hate attributing a result to a single moment like that, but you have to think that if he buries that pen, then we keep that positive start going and quite feasibly win the game

cheeky boy

Jack an obvious shout for the penalty. He loves the Arsenal in a way other players can’t really comprehend.

Remember the invincibles

Lol. The better option would be for him to stop taking penalties. Arteta is good enough at them. Giroud and the ox are good at them. I think wilshere is decent from the spot and Santi is ok too.

Dracular

Poldi, 6 goals from 7 shots on target. Start giving him play time, and we will have better nights, tanx Sir Arsene.

Adam Richards

It seemed a silly risk for me. If he scores, bravo. If he misses, it brings out the worst of the fans, kills confidence and probably there’s no way back for Ozil taking a penalty again.

Previgo

Cazorla should have taken that wenger!

Indiegooner

Understatement 101

jason

Why is Ozil taking penalties and also why is he so lazy??

Honestly couldn’t care less about losing this game we wouldn’t of won the champions league and with City and Chelsea both playing in less competitions, we wouldn’t of had a chance of wining the league…

FA cup our most realistic chance of a trophy and a good position in the league lets keep it to these 2 competitions.

Rajthegoon

@Jason – you’re making it sound as if we’re United right now (shit team, shit manager, etc). We’re still in 3 competitions. We just knocked out Liverpool out of the FA cup, 1 point off the top of Prem League and may I remind you good sir, we not beat Bayern last season but destroyed them. The second leg is still to come. As for Özil, he just seems dead on his feet, he has featured in pretty much every match. I think he needs to be dropped for the next leg, not due to his performance (well partly his… Read more »

jason

Im sorry mate but last time I checked City and Chelsea have MUCH bigger squads than we do and we have loads of injuries… but yeh by your logic all because we aint man Utd we can play in all these competitions and still remain consistant in the league…

To that I say no chance… be realistic we aint winning the champions league FACT.. time to priorotise Man U have done it in the past so must we.

Look at this and tell me again Ozil was lazy

Previgo

Even jack is good at spot kicks

Canadian Arsenal Fan

Hell, I think Flamini could do it. He seems composed enough, and can muster up a good strike if he needs to

Eurasian Gunner

Rambo takes penalties for Wales, from what I’ve seen he’s very good at them.

WE R THE LITAL HORSE

Allowing this epidemic of Dutch left footed c*nts to happen at the emirates is a mistake.

Previgo

The moment ozil went down, my first reaction was “Cazorla should take this”

Bucks

Carragher is an idiot.

jason

What did he say? tbh he normally gets it right..

avicenna

Shit happens.. but the team showed that we are on par against the champions of Europe. It’s still not over though..

Beagleboy

On German TV Arsene also spoke about Bayern’s weaknesses and that he was confident. More ominously though he followed that by saying that Arsenal now has to focus on the PL (could have been the focus on the coming games, but also a veiled reference to slim chances to s in the CL)

gooners n roses

Naive. Again.

AFCEdwards

Not really. There was very little about our performance that could be deemed as naive. However, you’ve heard pundits say it previously so it must be true. Now, when will Walcott get a ‘footballing brain’ and is it possible to win anything with kids? I’ve heard not.

Neil #2

Hopefully Gibbs won’t be out too long, though if he’s done his hamstring, I’m guessing 6 weeks min. 🙁

Frog

Ozil was our motm untill the red card. Get off his back. He’s not a defensive midfielder. If we had another sub, wenger would have taken him off. Mesut was running the show until szcz went a bit Jens.

Heroldgoon

Moral: Lads, be MOTM till a certain point from which you decide to not want it anymore.

santi's panties

Szcz ran out, realized he misjudged, tried to reel himself in but was late. Penalty, yes. Rush of blood/going a bit Jens, no. Just a red card because of stupid Fifa rules that no one will change because Fifa is Fifa.

Highberry

Why didn’t Sky pick up on that bastard robben spitting on Bac???? And YES my sis who was at the game sent me a fucking video from her phone. Or isn’t it PC to complain about a member of a German team spitting on a black player????

Highberry
ArsenalWilson

It’s a drip of sweat man, calm down.

007

Robben didn’t spit. He was drooling. You can see it on his chin in the still picture.

Highberry

Who on earth is thumbing down a post complaining about someone spitting on one of ours??? OK we go beat not a problem….but don’t spit on my hero

Julio Baptista's humble alter ego

Yeah take it easy mate, looks like sweat more than anything. I’m pretty sure some of our teammates like Chambo saw it first hand as well, they’d go mental if it was spit

Julio Baptista's humble alter ego

Robben’s still a cunt though

Phil

you go and buy some glasses mate… those help.

simonds

Highberry, you are a deluded moron

dink arnold

It’s hard to tell, but the more I look at it, the more I think it’s sweat falling off him. He is patting him on the back at the same time and the Ox doesn’t react at all negatively

The Öwl

Yes the penalty miss killed our vibe. But we could’ve scored 2 before that. I really missed Lego-hair and Rambo. And good ol’ Theo. But Sanogo is the man!

godonner

Everything went against us tonight maybe our luck will come in Munich keep the faith

Mikolaj

Two minor mistakes (Mathieu Flamini didn’t cover Kroos and Muller for both Bayern’ goals) against such a top side cost a lot. We were really impressive during first 20minutes. We were brave, commited, we shocked Bayern with our transition from defence to attack. Gibbs played a huge part in that. Having Monreal on the left with “lazy” Ozil who maybe runs a lot overall but does very little fast runs and sprints defensively was like ticking bomb. Bayern is a very consistent and patient team, they took their time, operated with the ball very well. They created 2 chances and… Read more »

Mate Kiddleton

On the positive side, I was really impressed by young Sanogo. That pass over the top for Ox to run onto was magic

DL Gooner

Agreed, he’s played very well now in two big games. No harm to have some proper competition for Giroud either. After such a great start it’s hard not to wonder how it would have played out if it wasn’t for Nicola.

vieira

ozil was brutal should have been taken off for carzorla, wenger open your eyes

gunner

It was a spirited performance with 10 men. Mr.Wenger please start using poldi more in premier league. please.

Heroldgoon

i waited for this glamour game for 2months! only for the ref to decide it in 1 minute. I feel great just fucking great!

Previgo

Spot kick takers from now on
1. Arteta
2. Podolski
3. Giroud
4. Cazorla
5. Wilshere
6. Bendtner
Ozil should never take a spot kick for arsenal again, has missed his last 3 club spot kicks, 1 for werder bremen and 2 for arsenal, he never took a spot kick for madrid

Canadian Arsenal Fan

Most of those people weren’t even on the pitch.

Henry! Chance! Goal!!

Monreal’s lack of awareness killed this game. He completely fell asleep for the pass that lead to the penalty kick. They were there for the taking. We could have won this game by 2 to 3 goals if Gibbs didn’t go off injured

vieira

we’re lucky liverpool had no interest in the cup

Bee

im really disappointed with that shit penalty, it was shit

and im really disappointed about our record of getting goalkeepers sent off, i dont know what the stats are, but we must be one of the worst teams for it

and yes, the lehmann against barcelona still pisses me off

anyway, games over now, theres a slight/slim chance in the 2nd leg, but most importantly we’ve got the league and fa cup to win, lets move on and 3 points at the weekend

aurora

Terry is a cunt.

gooner odst

The penalty killed Özil more, in the sense of controlling the game. But before the sending off any psychic would tell you that we were going to get a favourable result and everyone comes out smelling of roses. We always make things harder for ourselves in these cup ties.

SilverSpoon

unlucky with the red, but credit where credit is due. Kroos i such a class player.
The wrinkly old baldspot on the right however is a massive cunt

Happy Simwayi

The game was tough for Arsenal af a goalkeeper getting a red card!

Amusa

Why did Koscielny run upfront like a Mad man?
Flamini covered for him and lost his man.
Weren’t we supposed to have learnt the lessons of last year?
I’m sure Koscielny will get his whopped by Wenger.

goonertilidie

I quite like what Kozza did, it was fantastic play from him, reminded me of Franco Baresi. What wound me up was Wilshere taking a rubbish free kick and trying to find a single red shirt amongst a sea of Bayern shirts. Stupid play, but having said that Wilshere did have an excellent game.

Proud to be a Gooner tonight. Compare that performance with 10 men to the debacle at Anfield; remarkable turnaround. Lets pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and get 3 points on Saturday.

Özil's Eyes on Arsene's Hot Thighs

Meanwhile, dunno about you but on nights like this when I should be doing far more important things related to work and my career, I just lie on my back on the carpet and read/rate Arseblog News comments.

koscielny's pocket

I’m not a fan of looking for something to blame when my team loses but that red card, questionable I might add, really knocked us out of the match.

Positives though, Sanogo looks like a more mobile Giroud. Needs to work more on getting behind and fooling defenses but I think he deserves more games.

Nothing we can do now but to hope for the best in the away leg. Rambo’s back by then is he not. Come on you Gunners.

Heroldgoon

Apparently most expensive player means Penalty taker. When you’re not cut out for it as frimmers would say ” leave it.. yeah!”

Crouch End Gooner

I really hope that our fans don’t turn on Ozil like they did on Gervinho.

He’s obviously having some problems at the moment, but I have this GREAT idea. How about we support him through this rough patch instead of lambasting him? Controversial I know, but let’s give it a try!

Just look at how Ramsey turned out, or even Gervinho who is currently taking the piss in Serie A.

shitbird

Agreed, the hate for Ozil is getting to be a bit much–it’s embarrassing. Thumb me down all you want but if you’re a supporter you get behind the players. I had a bad feeling about him taking it too, but everyone freaking out isn’t going to help him the next time he has to take one. Fume at home, pour coffee on your crotch, kick the cat, but FFS take a day or five off from the internet.

Too Drunk To Be Offside

Okay hard luck guys. Both penalties were penalities and by the rules, the red card was also fair. Chessers clearly battered through Robben’s leg. One may at best argue that Robben was not strictly in control of the ball, but even that is a far stretch. Robben had out controlled the keeper and in all likelihood would have gotten to the ball and scored. So no real complaints there. I still feel that the rule of sending off after a penalty is stupid. One goal scoring opportunity was denied, but another has been presented on a platter. Sure send off… Read more »

dink arnold

Have to agree that the rule to send szezsny off is a stupid rule, but often refs ignore the stupid rules, this one didn’t. Ozil put in a good shift, besides the weak penalty. Sanogo was great, but should have been replaced by Giroud or Podolski, he looked more tired than the OX.

But we can’t give up on the Champions League, we can still win by 2 goals at the Allianz for sure. I don’t ever support the idea of giving up on the Champions League, that’s not something winners do.

YouTube Graduate

Read the whole comment. What do I get?

Seriously though, the rule is fine. If the keeper didn’t risk a sending off he would always try to block the player if the ball was out of reach. A 100% chance is converted to something less, as evident tonight. Sucks when it goes against your team though.

Pin Finish

First game at the Emirates I have been to this season. Missing that penalty really took the wind out of the crowd. The boys worked really hard tonight and deserved a bit better. Ozil is class, but his style can be very frustrating. He needs quick runners in front of him making runs and creating space. Let’s get back on track with 3 points against Sunderland on Saturday.

meletios

I remember when I pointed out Ozil’s attitude many here did not agree.(@heroldgooner/David etc..) The same attitude today again..pathetic..he brushed off Flamini, even Wilshere had a go at him…not good…he should be benched, the team should not have to carry him because of his past.. Santi is also suffering because of this, should have seen his face after Ozil messed up the penalty. He might be a great player and might be great for us later but right now he is not playing well plus his attitude leaves a lot to be desired. Even Wenger the person who never critcises… Read more »

Did not enjoy that game… but i must say i do like that kid Sanogo

Graeme

Özil does seem to be a bit of a delicate flower eh, I don’t mind that he missed, it happens, but he vanished after that and that’s really disappointing. I honestly don’t think he likes being the main man at all, he’ll come good I’m sure and sending of a goal keeper and giving a penalty for almost nothing is a disgrace to football in my opinion.. Still I’m sure we’ll win 3-0 in Munich because we are weird like that.

Jeff

The rule on penalty & red card is ridiculously harsh. We get punished three times for one mistake. A penalty, a red card and a one match suspension!

Steve

Robben is a vile ex chav scumbsg and if i were Wenger I’d complain about the baldy slap head spitting at sagna – disgraceful

It wasn’t a spits be robben, sweat dripping from him. As much as I dislike him that’s not his style, he is more likely to dive
