Wenger: only our fans were good today

Arsene Wenger has said the only thing good about Arsenal today were the fans who made the trip to Anfield.

An abject start to the game saw Liverpool score four times inside the first twenty minutes, and a clearly shell-shocked Arsenal could never recover.

Speaking the press after the game, the manager said, “Only our fans were good for 90 minutes, that’s all.

“Our defensive stability was very poor, we looked always vulnerable defensively. Congratulations to Liverpool, they were the better team today and we were very poor today.”

With a massive midweek clash with Man Utd up next, Wenger has called on his team to respond and says that talk of Arsenal’s title challenge being over is premature (there are still 13 games to play).

“What is important is that we respond to the result, especially that we respond with a different performance because our performance overall was poor today – on the concentration level and on the pace.

“Maybe it’s better if I don’t talk too much, go home and respond well on Wednesday night because I include myself in that performance. It raises the questions that we have to answer on Wednesday night.”

And on the title being possible, he said, “Of course because, no matter what happens, it will be mathematically possible. It’s always what you make of the defeats that decides your future and tonight we have a lot to answer for and a lot of answers to find.

“It was a similar situation against City, Saturday morning, 12.45 and early goals.”

If there is a silver lining today it’s that after that Man City game we took 20 points from the next 24 available in the league, and a similar response this time would be just the thing.

Winning streak. Get stuffed. Bounce back. Winning streak. And repeat. Still think we can win it..just a day to forget.

Bergkamp fan

We should have beaten Chelsea away anyway to win the league, and now if we do that, and then even tie with city at home (assuming all else goes well), we will win the league.

Which means, to win the league (unless Chelsea mess up), Wenger will have to beat Mourinho, and winning the league breaking that no win record against Mourinho will be beautiful.

Considering Chelsea’s strike force is complete utter crap as well, it’ll be a good even match, and I think we can do it! #Faith #COYG

jack jack jack

We got battered by United in 2001 in much the same way – the next season we won the Double. Days like this happen, we got caught with our trousers down, and we’ll learn from it and bounce back stronger. Come on the Arsenal!

Eiregun

We are the Arsenal, win lose or draw, bring on utd

A Yank in King Arsene's West Stand

Away fans *were* outstanding, as always. They make all gooners proud, even when our boys on the pitch have a shit day. Glad to see the appreciation from the boss and from Poldi and szczesny on social media.

And at least City dropped points, eh?

with the left and the right

City dropping points means we’re still in second just a point behind the top. Any talk about the title tilt being done for is premature. The fans were classy today in difficult circumstances and we have to show up again on Wednesday. The team needs the entire stadium to be behind them, i can imagine a scenario in which the fans get impatient and pile more pressure on the team if things aren’t going our way. 100% support needed now more than ever, COYG!!

I can see Liverpool making a run for it as well, if memory serves me right Chelsea and City both have to go to Anfield. Rogers is doing really well, which he did at Swansea as well, it pains me because he is a slope-headed hobgoblin of a man. But… with Coutinho coming back and Sterling looking lively on the wings once more, throw in Suarez and Sturridge, and they have got the best attack, with only City looking as dangerous. I hope Pool take points off the other teams, the whole top of the table looks strong and the… Read more »

Thanks for the reminder that chelsea and city are yet to pay a visit to anfield, the most consoling news today so far

Just a day to forget only other bonus we got today is that man shitty drew. Got to respond and beat moyes’s muppets on Wednesday night.

bingobongo

I carry around a great big fucking full-stop for days like these.

arsenalfc01

Ok lets say we beat Man U and then Sun,Stoke and Swansea .From gameweek 30 we have ***** away , Chelsea away, City home , Evertom away.. another very tought strike . Do you think we can do it ? COYG!

Stevie boy

Days like this suck, end of!!!

Worst thing is having to listen to all the mugmashers going on as if they just won the double. Come the weekend for F.A, just wait and see.

COYG!

I live with a Mugsmasher, and he’s been going on for hours now. I almost killed him with a pizza slicer.

gmv8

We knew their tactics, and knew what they were going to do after they played Everton. Other premiership teams have since dealt with them – why didn’t we?

gmv8

Even worse we did not learn from the Southampton experience at all – same team start – same mistakes. Hopefully the message has gone home this time….

FReezin gooner

I swear we’ll be doing the smashing come FA, starting with rogers’ head.

Rambö

Shitteh drew with Norwich today as far as I know, so it could be worse. I doubt Chelski can last at the top really, just a gut feeling though. Now let’s focus on kicking some ass in a few days. COYG!

Ozil – benched to tell the fucker hes just like any other player.
Monreal – Bemched to tell him that Arsenal have a better left back
Giroud – Benched to let him know that there is someone better there to kick his ass……

gunner

Wenger needs to trust more poldi on left wing and start him more often than he does. He works efficiently on the left and does not allow giroud to be isolated.

Emir of Emirates

Exactly….but what is Poldi doing wrong that we cant see, he adds more than depth to the attack he adds goals and a thor’s hammer left foot shot,…natural left wing player…i suggest Ozil sits the next game out..play Santi in the hole, and let little Mozart play his part!!! whats fucking difficult in that…well #wengerknows and i still love the Arsenal…upward and forward

mike

I think the result may have been appalling, and skrtle i find particularly unpleasant. HOWEVER i feel this is the time to look back and draw a similarity to last season, not only are we much stronger, but we also suffered a big defeat then, to Bayern. and look what it caused. i hope very strongly that Arsene drills it into the team that they must put this behind them and concentrate 100% on taking very following game by the scruff of the neck and go on a run in comparable to last season. this aint the end folks, its… Read more »

Merlin's Panini

Although the manner of the defeat was alarming, especially as it’s the second “big” away game in a row that we’ve been spanked, it’s not time yet to get all up in arms about it. We’re not that far off the top and it can all turn around quickly. We must get a result on wednesday with the right attitude.

We need to build some momentum going into the latter part of March because that, in my opinion, is going to be the most crucial test of our title credentials.

Hutch

Meant to end it as……a harsh lesson they will never forget. Our team is better than this and Liverpool justifiably gave us a whipping for being woeful.
Bring on the Scum.

DJH84

We need to forget today and concentrate on 3 points on Wednesday. We’re still in yhe mix for the title. Beating Moyes Muppets will giv us the kick up the backside we need. COYG.

Thank fucking god for Norwich City.

Only one poxy point. It’s actually still in our hands.

Massive bonus so wake the fuck up Arsenal!

I love Arsenal. We can lose 20-0 at home to Mansfield and I’ll still love them. However, I’ve got my Worzel Gummidge ‘sensible’ head on now. And the new head selects this team for Utd. ——–Chez Sagna Mert Kos Gibbs —-Ox Wilshere Cazorla Rosicky Podolski ——-Giroud As much as I love Ozil and all he has done (most chances created in Europe this season) that performance today was one of four things. 1. He’s tired. 2. He hates playing/living in England. 3. He doesn’t give a shit. 4. He has personal problems with a woman or something. I think it’s… Read more »

Not just Ozil, every single player was bad today. He’s not a runner thats why we feel he’s lazy. He is a different type thats all.. May be we’re scrutinizing him with that price tag.

Gutbukket Deffrolla

When he played for Real Madrid and some nobody had the temerity to tackle him then sitting on his arse and asking the ref for a free kick was a valid tactic that usually worked. However, Arsenal are not the Chosen of the English Referees and those august fellows will look with utter contempt at any Arsenal player asking for a free kick because we’re Arsenal and we’re known to be softies. He either has to learn not to lose the ball (and he’s not the only one) or he has to learn to get straight back up and help… Read more »

The away fans were awesome as usual today. It’s hard to be positive considering the abject performance we just put. Maybe abject is too strong a word. How bout absolute shit performance? None of the lads deserve to come out of this match with their heads held high. What hurts the most is this was nowhere near our usual selves? It was like all of our ghosts from the past had decided to descend on us all at once for this match. I feel Arsene made some mistakes in his team selection as well. we never seem to change the formation no matter how bad it gets . good managers recognize weak areas in games and change it accordingly . Wenger just changes one for one like today , striker off striker on , defender off , defender on etc . then sits shaking his head in disbelief . i was shaking my head in disbelief after 18 minutes . GET A PLAN B WENGER !!!!!

Davy Jones

I Agree. But Wenger was much more active on the sidelines in the old days. But over the years he have become more and more passive for some reason. Rodgers was awesome at real time managing today as usual. Motivating his players, tweaking his tactics and applauding every chance they had and supporting his players all throughout the game. In Stark contrast to Rodgers, Wenger just sat there in apathy clearly bewildered at what to do and ended up doing nothing Even though the goals were pouring in behind Sczczesny. At the very least he could get up and motivate… Read more »

Wenger would have implemented plan B when exactly? After 15 minutes when we were 3-0 down? And he would have done what? Shut up shop and try not to concede any more?

Yeah but after city debacle we had relatively easy games. So 20 out of 24 doesnt matter. Coz now in between two deathruns only 3 easy games. So we need to focus and buckle up.

voldermort

No excuses offered and none would have been accepted. Poor performance from a defence and midfield that have been outstanding for most of the season. Pleased wenger didn’t give the usual tired rubbish. Just a bad day. We won’t win the league. We are just nowhere near strong enough up front and haven’t been since rvp left. But can’t hang a defence and midfield that have got us this far out to dry. Giroud is a good player and nobody works harder but he’s not a great player and until we have a front line that the midfield can feed… Read more »

Gutbukket Deffrolla

When was the last time when RVP was with us that we were on top of the Premier League and stayed there for weeks at a time? Don’t give us that bullshit about being rubbish since he left. We’ve been fucking excellent for much of the time since he fucked off to play for United, and the second season he is with United they are absolutely fucking dire, and he has done very little to change that. Oh, and just in case you were thinking of suggesting it, then NO, we don’t want the cunt back.

WhatHappened

I started supporting Arsenal as an 8year old kid while everybody was busy chasing the shadows of Liverpool and Manchester United not forgeting Leeds and Newcastle…i didnt have the explanation why i support the Gunners…

ManU 8-2 and todays game made me know…”simply i love the club,i love the football of this team, i love the family”

Despite the 5-1 drubbing Liverpool gave us ealier today and ManCity ends in a draw…i believe God gives Arsenal a hint.

“You only deserves the Championship”

Im afraid that might be it for the title. I jus hope we at least fight for the rest of the season and non of this tepid shit. We dearly miss walcott and rosicky starting. Two very big factors in getting anything ever in big games. As much as I love them, how can we have strikers who don’t want to strike. It seems giroud is buying too much into this big man pivot up top…just try something, something walcott has (tons of flukey goals–dnt get those without trying) Cant say it’s gonna be a meltdown as some are saying,… Read more »

Bunburyist

Sensible words from Wenger today. Also refreshing that he added his own name to the problem. I wonder if he regrets buying an injured midfielder this January? I’m not saying that one or even two new faces would have guaranteed a different result today, but players often talk about the lift they get when a star joins the club, and certainly we could have used players a little more eager to impress (as new players often are) out there. But mainly, I think it unfortunate that should we fail to win anything this year, the club’s inaction in the transfer… Read more »

WHAT. THE. FUCK. Hate to say it but I’ve been waiting for the collapse to come. The next couple of weeks will see us out of the title, FA Cup and champions league. We all see it year in year out. Wenger said after the game that the players suffered a lack of focus! What a stupid thing to say. One point and five goals off the top is not too shabby. I admit the defeat induced a fitful 2 hour nap. The personal silver lining was that I could not make the trip to Anfield: drunken night out and missed the ride. Been trying to get my mates focused on the very long drive home though; so maybe there are two silver linings to be seen, eh? The defensive support was awful and the shell-shock from the quick first goal never quite wore off; like deer that encountered a 90 minute glare. I hope the team’s hubris has now… Read more »

Wenger should include himself in that performance. Absolutely right. Basically, our vaunted midfield got totally overrun today. Chelsea can play Matic, Luiz, Ramires and Mikel in that role. We only had Arteta with Jack’s positioning very poor when it comes to reading of the game. Yes, I like that passion and aggression but that alone is not enough. On top that, his constant moaning and squaring up to other players is so childish. Wenger was not too confident of Ox being able to assist Arteta in the middle but in the end we had Ozil, Santi, Jack, Ox as attacking… Read more »

We will come back. Rogers and his smugsmashers have just been copying Pochettino’s style of play, as it seems to work on the whole for him, although a lot of premiership teams are starting to find answers for it now. Unfortunately we failed to take the hint from our Southampton debacle, and must’ve been a dream come true to Rogers, as he really didn’t have to do any thinking. The whole problem with that style is that it takes a lot of energy, and the opposition will tire. When they do, we need to in a position to put them… Read more »

I’m moving on from this one, let’s get back to winning and putting a nail in United’s Champions League coffin.

Next Sunday..pay back.

Gutbukket Deffrolla

You think too small. We need to drive a nail into their Europa Cup coffin too.

Then again, if they make the Europa Cup they might decide to keep Moyes another year, and just think how much harder it would be for him if they were playing in Estonia and all points east on Thursday nights in November.

I’m angrry too. of whole gang! even of Wenger! for his moves in last summer with NO FORWARD! and 40,000,001! and Kalstrom even with his thoughts about Defensive Midfielders today and play Monreal! But today was about a bad thoughts and opinion in whole gang! They were thinking it’s easy like 2-0 at home and with a bad decision of ref in first for foul and then for offside,so we went down. I would love to see Pogba playing DM for us. Since he left Man Ure, the kidhas been an absolute beast. He’s huge, fast, skilled, and violent. Just what we need.

SG_Gooner

Also, it’s about time the players stop buying into the hype of beautiful football etc… We have played mostly functional football since last season except for few good performances along the way. I am ok with it but when we square up to big teams we want to show everyone that we are big too and we want to be seen as playing exciting football. The players have got to accept that the squad has limitations and play according to plan. I feel in all the big games away from home we forgot the basics and paid the price for… Read more »

Today’s score is far from a reason to count us out. We have as much as a chance as City and Chelsea. People tend to forget that those other two have dropped points in games when they shouldn’t have. Why is it when we drop points it’s always a catastrophe? We are not a fluke. In the last 12 months we are the leading points getter. I am disappointed in today’s result but my love for the team has not changed and my belief in them hasn’t either. Why should it?

Truegunnerindia

It seems that given how competitive the league is turning out to be, we are somehow targeting the games only against the ‘big’ teams as real challenges. The key to winning the league is to get the better of all the teams that we are yet to face.
City drew with Norwich today, Chelsea were frustrated at West Ham a couple of weeks ago etc. The mantra needs to be just not to to lose until May. May we can do just that like last season post Spurs. COYG

Virginia Goon

Bad, really bad. Is Özil saving himself for the World Cup possibly? Haven’t seen a single person bring this up, if so, or whatever is happening, it’s extremely disappointing. Let me get away from individuals, everyone was poor today. There was zero zip, zero fight, not a hint of teammates encouraging one another. It almost seemed as if they didn’t mind just conceding more. No heart is the worse, worst thing in my opinion a professional athletes can display. I’m not even thinking tactics, missed chances, defensive errors etc etc…..I’m livid with the attitude. Extremely dissappointing.

everymatchboy

Who can possibly believe that a manager who has failed for 8 years can suddenly pull a rabbit out of the hat? If we win anything it will because the petrodollar clubs have failed!

Massimo

In ten days we had 3 different teams “top of the league”. This is show that this league it’s beautiful and every game could be difficult and dangerous.
Be in the mix is already a great result and this is the time where the fans must to show that they are adult and keep the cool down and just support the team… United next and I don’t scare them a all.
We show already that we could bounce back… City show that maybe they can’t, for example

santori

Those wankers on the BBC are going to have a field day with this one.:D

Fortunately City failed to take advantage despite their overwhelming credentials.

Chelsea are the winners this round as their bling encrusted miniature horse stealthily slips past.

We were rubbish and Liverpool were good.

We need to get our act together and beat United.

As is, I suspect the end of Death Run2 (we failed Death Run 1 earlier but survived with the margins being not as slim this time round), will pretty much tell us which is the competition we have to prioritise.

santori

Naturally all the naysayers will be out in force but we’re still in it in the league if we beat United. If not, it will be difficult. Having suffered this massive humiliation today, I fancy us against Liverpool in the FA cup. the lads will want to set things right. Still its a cup game and will ride on events midweek against United. if we suffer another loss against the Mancs, it won’t do the old confidence a lot of good. Bayern is always going to be tough. If we are insipid like today, we can kiss the CL goodbye.… Read more »

This is what happens when you load your team with attacking midfielders and don’t have a single defensively-minded player in front of the back 4. Let’s face it, Arteta is not a defensive midfielder; he’s another creative midfielder made to play there. Rosicky was the only midfield player we had available who can adequately press and defend, and he was only brought on when the game was lost. Playing Ozil and Cazorla really does not seem to work. It should be either one or the other. Podolski should have been on the left, in front of Gibbs. Yet again, both… Read more »

No matter who’s in charge, no matter who owns us and no matter where we are in the league, We, the Glorious Gooner army will sing our hearts out for our beloved club, the mighty Arsenal.

But if we miss out again due to the mismanagement of the transfer market resulting in a team short of true depth, then the time has come, not for a £24M reward but for the manger’s departure.

Laurel

I agree with gunner that Giroud is often isolated upfront alone. What’s wrong with playing Podolski alongside? It is naïve to think our midfield will pass their way thru defences of the top teams.Neil, I’ll choose the same team as u did. Isn’t it arrogant to keep playing Arteta in DM? He’s an attacking midfielder.Along wt Jack got us a similar result as City. Again, like Lollo said, we need a plan b or the season will take wings and be gone from us.

Ozsenal

Blessing in disguise.

Now Arsene has the reason to drop and rest some of his senior players.
Manu still easily pierced defence, so big changes could be expected.

Same happened last season and when some underperforming players were dropped and butts got kicked remained unbeaten!

A result Arsene had probably been waiting and expecting.
