Reports in Japan claim Ryo Miyaichi could miss the rest of the season after suffering a bad hamstring injury in Arsenal’s under-21 Premier League Cup semi-final against Reading last week.
The Japanese winger was stretchered from the field on 76 minutes with the scores at 1-1 and in his absence his teammates were downed 3-1 in extra time.
The 21-year-old has suffered a host of fitness problems since signing on at the Emirates in 2011 with early good form on loan at Feyenoord and Bolton overshadowed by two serious injuries at Wigan last season.
While he was a ‘star’ of last summer’s tour of his home country he’s found first team time action hard to come by since August, making only two starts and three substitute appearances in all competitions.
He was also rather embarrasingly taken to Munich for the second-leg of the Gunners Champions League showdown but told he couldn’t sit on the bench because he was in fact ineligble for the competition.
The latest setback also looks likely to draw a line under any residing hopes of featuring for his country in Brazil.

Cheers to @Ryo_Cleverfish for the heads up.
I sure hope he is a late bloomer…
Not to sound callous, but he’s already played his last game for Arsenal anyway.
If it’s the last year of his contract you couldn’t argue with that. From what I seen in the two legs of the Olympiakos games Campbell is way ahead of him now. He was missed for the U21’s today.
And I hope he gets luckier with the injuries and carves out a career for himself somewhere
Well, that’s a blow!
Not to be a downer. But I never ever thought he had a chance at Brazil. His touch is terrible. Apart from is good stint at Bolton, he hasn’t looked promising at all. looks like another Park in fact. Is there some sort of diversity directive at Arsenal or what?…
Park was a South Korean international striker who did pretty decently in Europe (and continues to do pretty decently for his national team) before Arsenal basically paid three million to bench him. Miyaichi was a Japanese schoolboy whose pace and trickery made him stand out as a potentially devastating winger. Like many of Arsenal’s transfers and many, many of Arsenal’s younger acquisitions, he hasn’t quite lit the Emirates on fire (yet? Ramsey?). If you want better comparisons for Miyaichi, maybe Jeffers? Diaby? Bentley? Bendtner? Yeah, Arsenal has a ‘diversity directive’ in so far as they recognise that good players (and… Read more »
Very unfortunate but with the emergence of Campbell you’ve got to think Ryo’s days were numbered anyway. Hope the lad has speedy recovery
Sigh :/
Terrible shame, his physique is too fragile. I think he needs to go Serie A.
Hope he won’t trace the step that Diaby left
Is it just me or is half our squad injured at any given time :/
a keeper and a few defenders out, and we’d have a formidable injured XI.
What? A talented young player with a bad injury record at Arsenal? Shocking. Just plain shocking.
I went to the Capital One Cup tie at West Brom earlier in the season, he was hopeless, sorry.
Poor first touch, poor decisions, couldn’t take on the Albion right back, showed absolutely nothing.
Remember when Ryo was the mustard and how he should have been playing ahead of Theo Walcott because he had more a ” football brain”
now we can all agree that this signing has been along the lines of that of Ju young who?
a shame he’s injured makes it even harder to ship him….doubt he was going to attract a fee anyways. Get well soon, your next club beckons…….
That’s disappointing. While he may not be at Arsenal for much longer, I think and I hope he will have a successful career at another club
I hope he has a speedy recovery.
I doubt he will make it at arsenal with Gnabry and Ox ahead of him
I honestly believe he could become the next Rosicky given patience and a freedom from injury with a good run of games for Arsenal. The stuff I saw him do for Feyenord at such a young age is something you wouldn’t develop amongst Wigan players.
I don’t understand how anyone can be written off before they’ve even reached 24.
Baffles me the opinion of non-football playing football ‘fans’
wish you quick recovery bro. Its unfair though!
Was his ineligibility for the Champions League really forgotten or was that drummed up by the papers? I kind of figured he was brought along as a Robben test dummy, of sorts, for them to practice defending against (Ryo a quick, agile lefty who looks so small any bit of contact would knock him over)
But what about Sagna?
Joel Campbell in the squad next year means Ryo will have to be loaned or probably sold, I’m afraid. Too little for the Premier league IMO.
Too little is actually Santi / arshavin. I would say he hit a block when got injured at bolton and seems to stutter since. You are not exactly rubbish if you become instant favourite at feyenord and even player of the month at bolton.
Silly to write Ryo of allready. Totally explainable that he struggles with fitness growing up with different physical traditions in japanese football, but that can still be developed and Wenger will know this. He still has pace, skill and movement which is harder to develop. To compare him with Park is missing every sort of point that is possible. Better to compare him with Sanogo who’s had to work on his fitness before being ready for the PL. Also he’s 10 cm taller than Arshavin at 183 cm. That is 1 cm taller than The Verminator. So check facts, before… Read more »
