Report: Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

Arsenal: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Arteta, Wilshere, Rosicky, Cazorla, Podolski, Giroud

Subs: Fabianski, Vermaelen, Flamini, Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gnabry, Sanogo

A contentious penalty 16 minutes from time, converted by Jonathan Walters, was enough for Stoke City to snatch a 1-0 victory against a toothless Arsenal. The Gunners barely tested Asmir Begovic throughout the 90 minutes and while they looked defensively solid, they couldn’t find a reply after referee Michael Jones pointed to the spot for a handball against Laurent Koscielny.

It was a scrappy game from the off, Arsenal unable to string any passes together in the final third and Stoke not getting much change from Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny who were kept busy by target man Peter Crouch. In truth the first 15 minutes saw more action on the terraces than on the pitch, the travelling Gooners running through their repertoire of chants in an attempt to nullify the Britannia orcs.

Jonathan Walters had the first real effort on goal just past the quarter hour mark, his header flashing wide, while Santi Cazorla tried a curler which flew high and over. When the Gunners did finally find some space behind the Potters defence, Olivier Giroud couldn’t make decent contact from Gibbs’ cross.

If you were being positive you might say Arsenal’s build-up play was considered, in truth it was ponderous and lacking any cutting edge. Giroud, who looked very isolated for much of the half, did force the first save of the game on 29 minutes heading a Sagna cross straight at Asmir Begovic before Podolski skewed a left-foot drive a few minutes later.

The game opened up in the five minutes before half time. Szczesny was called into action when Arnautovic teed up Glen Whelan who drove from the edge of the box. Then Cazorla squandered a great chance, opting to shoot when he should have passed left to Podolski. The Spaniard hit the target, but Begovic had no problem standing firm.

Giroud who’d earlier had his ankle crunched by Whelan took another kicking when he was cleaned out by Erik Pieters just before the break. The Dutchman picked up a yellow for his troubles.

The Arsenal goal lived a charmed life in the opening ten minutes of the second half under a bombardment from the home side. First Szczesny scruffily beat away a cross under pressure from Walters and Crouch, moments later the lanky ex-England man tried a spectacular overhead kick. The Stoke striker then should have done better from an Adam set piece, the result of a Rosicky foul on Pieters that earned the Czech a yellow, but could only toe the ball up in the air from close range.

We looked better on the break, but Stoke continued to have the clearer chances. Crouch forced another decent stop from Szczesny with a glancing header and from the resulting corner Cameron fired just wide from close quarters.

Mesut Ozil replaced Podolski with 25 minutes remaining, Adam trod on Giroud’s calf with all his usual poise and grace before the fat Scottish cunt was himself removed in favour of Stephen Ireland. Trying to add a bit of zip to proceedings Chamberlain was sent on for Rosicky who’d had an off day.

Almost immediately after the substitution the referee gave Stoke a penalty. Koscielny challenging for the ball in the area saw the ball hit his hand from a yard. It was incredibly harsh, there was literally nothing he could do to stop it from happening. Jonathan Walters promptly scored to the right of Szczesny.

Chasing the game Wilshere was replaced by Sanogo and with the extra man in attack Giroud found himself free to set-up Ozil who shot just wide. Arsenal continued to press and when Giroud was hauled down on the edge of the area it looked a decent opportunity to test Begovic. After a touch by Cazorla, Arteta could only find the wall. Moments late Giroud couldn’t find any power from a Chamberlain cut-back.

Five minutes of extra-time yielded a fine chance for Sanogo, but the 21-year-old could only fire over in a disappointing finale which raises serious questions about our title-challenge.

Stoke were foul mouth-breathers as usual, but, to be honest, we didn’t show up today. Really unfortunate. No penetration, hesitant, and you know, if you jump for a ball with your hands in the air in the 18-yard box, you’re playing with fire. Some refs will call it, some won’t, but it’s a risk.

Depressing, but we deserved that.

Big Chief from Antarctica

That first half has killed any motivation to legitimately question that incapable ref.

Cygan's Middle Foot

I know ref decided that match, but would you all stop blaming the ref? I hate to admit, but if you watched chelsea vs everton game, the ref was sided to everton, and chelsea players didn’t moan the hell, they were trying and trying and attacking. I could not see that in arsenal players. Hell, get over with unfair ref, orc players. Stand up and fight, that is the arsenal. I guess many recent batch players just don’t have these quality. I am sorry but winners don’t shake hands after match just like that. Our players are in comfort zone.… Read more »

Cygan's Middle Foot

and also, chesney: look fucking complacent at times. can he actually save a penalty?

Big Chief from Antarctica

If the ref is a cunt, then I will call him a cunt. If we play shite, I will call our players shite first. After that, I will still call that ref a cunt for being a cunt.

As I’ve mentioned, I’ve got no motivation or whatsoever to call that ref any names besides this explanatory comment, as the performance today was worse than the refereeing. Our performance shouldn’t allow poor refereeing to be a decisive factor.

mattpen

Oh boo boo! We lost a game! Because no team has lost a game ever!!! Seriously, one loss and you hate everybody. We were shite today but support them. I cannot believe you’re giving Chesney shit for not saving a penalty. You are everything that is wrong with football. Fuck off!

The unfortunate fact is that the day Walcott was ruled out for the rest of the season we lost the trophy. Very underrated player and how much we could have used his goals in a lot of games. But how frustrating it was to see the players play SO BAD. Why not play Flamini in this kind of game instead of Arteta who looks very weak physically in colisions. And gotta question the decision to take of Podolski for Özil.. He simply looses the ball too much – hopefully he’ll improve his ohysical game for next season cause it’s simply… Read more »

JustAGentleman

I love Walcott, but we were at the top of the league even when he wasn’t playing.

Yes, losing Walcott was a very big blow, but we have other players who should at least compete. I mean, if everyone gave their 100% and it was just unfortunate that we lost, it’s understandable. But barely anyone showed up today..

No excuses, we played crap, didn’t deserve to win.

GuyFawkes

can I just say Arteta looks so past is sometimes. Physically weak, plays more side passes than Carrick, and so slow on the ball.

On a good day he looks like Xavi. On a bad day Denilson.

Flamini for me >>> Arteta. We NEED that vocal presence in such games. Something Arteta just doesn’t have.

Albanian Gunner

Arteta played better than most in midfield. Wilshere, Rosicky, Giroud were very poor today. I dont understand why he benched Ox today, you could see it gave more penetration rather than the usual fucking tiki-taka…Wenger tactics sometimes puzzle me….well deserved loss.

Remember the invincibles

We’re missing Ramsey too. Oxlade chamberlain is still being protected by the manager and now we’re really struggling for goals. We didn’t create much today and that was poor. We allowed stoke to play their game which as unfortunate as we were to lose, we didn’t deserve to win.

Have to fend off liverpool and finish third somehow. City and chelsea are pulling ahead in the title race. Just as those pundits predicted. I hate it when they’re proved right about us

Young Wenger, Massive Stud

I disagree. Have you seen how stupendously stuffed with proved talent Man City and Chelsea’s squads are? We’ll forever be swimming against that tide come the hard end of the season. It’s balancing out now. And the biggest games are coming. Our season ended when we lost Ramsey.

Norwegian gunner

I think Poldi was rubbish today. Fine, he had two shots, but other than that I didn’t even know he was there. Özil becomes better if his teammates decides to move around a bit. You could see it on our passing today. Most if not all of the passes were straight on the foot, not one through ball or anything like that. If there’s no movement he can choose to either just pass and hope something might develop within two minutes or actually move and make something happen. We need a team that actually moves around for Özil to function,… Read more »

NorthernGoon

You’re right Just… we were but then we had Ramsey as well.

January was going to be monumental for us and rather than make a couple of key signings that would have given us the impetus for a final push Wenger decided to plump for a guy with a broken back.

Walcott’s injury was massively detrimental to us.

I also have to agree with those that question why Flamini wasn’t played, this was his kind of game. Arteta is near enough useless in a scrap.

PD

As long as Arsene sees Arteta as a defensive midfielder, we will never win another trophy. It really is that simple for me. We’ve wasted a season and a half of his career asking him to do something he clearly isn’t able to do.

Dracular

Though we missed Theo, but we lost the trophy in the summer when the manager refused to sign another striker and also letting Higuain go. Don’t give a sh*t about what people say about Giroud, he has scored enough goals to deserve some credit, even Rooney with all the money hasnt done better than him. But for this Club to rely on a Sanago as the player in this present days to lead us to glory, Hell no! The whole world knew we need top quality up front, but I guess the manager thinks otherwise. I think you’re being a tad harsh on the team. It was a difficult game. I don’t think we deserved to lose- or to win either, but these things happen. You take the lessons and move on. Don’t be depressed.

I think ‘harsh’ would be calling one of our players a ‘bag of shit’, as one person does below. I think my criticism was fair. We didn’t show up.

Crap game played by two crap teams. One crap team got a lucky break after 75 mins, and the other crap team was too crap to equalise against the first crap team.

Remember the invincibles

Arseblog should use this summary next time(hopefully we don’t play crap again though). This is the perfect description for that game.

Bunburyist

So true. That stamp on Giroud was unbelievable. Retroactive punishment?

Mpls

For both the stamp on Giroud, and the flying studs on Arteta. I’m amazed he’s allowed to repeatedly walk off the field vertically.

Runcorn Gooner

So many fans blaming Stoke and the ref…….at the end of the day we didn’t play well enough to beat both of them.
So disappointed in the team but hey it’s the cup next week.Fancy we could win that and finish 3rd or 4th.

Rufusstan

….and if you stamp on an opposition strikers calf, or ankle, you do the same thing.

Not so much a bad performance, than Stoke being allowed to break up our game as far beyond the rules of the game as they liked.

Sad as it may seem; I don’t think we were allowed to win that one (and yes I know all that implies, which is why I feel sad rather than angry right now).

The Walcott injury is the most frustrating part of the season for me. Injured and out for the rest of the season at the beginning of the window Theo has become a prominent goal scorer and them goals are being badly missed we had weeks to try and bring someone in and didn’t bother. Another moan where the hell is Ramsey it’s nearly three months now.

kenyangoon

giroud can’t turn & shoot,
we play difficult passes when a simple 1 would suffice,
& why fuck can’t we curl in free kicks?

D

Different year same old story.

ckmma

Souness said something funny but annoying, Arsene only plays plan A pass into the net, if that fails do plan A faster. We’ve played Stoke enough to know this is what they do, I’m gona try and enjoy my weekend.

Gargoyle

But, but, but this year we have older and more experienced players. And yet we keep turning up with these immature performances time and again.

Remember the invincibles

The reason Giroud didn’t score with that model was because he was asked to use his head.

Biishopp

I do not think we can start saying stuff like that, it was a poor game, but not the crumbling team you are making us out to be. As disappointed as I am right now, I still believe our trophy drought WILL end this season. But the team needs to improve

Chair

We can very well say things like that, if we can’t do it against big teams (and we clearly can’t, as seen this season time and time again) then we have to do it against everyone else if we are to win anything. These were humongous 3 points that we simply had to get because in the coming matches we won’t be getting plenty.
Come April, we’ll most likely find ourselves 10 points behind, meaning we’re out already.

Exiledgooner

I love Wenger and I admire his sang-froid, but it’s a quality that I don’t think can be taught- too often in ‘big’ or difficult games there is an air of vulnerability about the team. I think we can, on our day, beat the Manchester Cities and Chelseas, could always beat the Manchester Uniteds and should comfortably beat the foul cunts like the Stokes of this world, but quite a bit there seems to be a lack of cutting edge in our game (even Arsene seems to admit it, what with the handbrake and all…) I don’t know what the… Read more »

mastaofthegoonaverse

Oh they were not abnormally Stokefied today, just horrible and Stokelike, fouling, couple of naughty ones and a lucky pen, how the cunt above blames Kos…., we were poor again as we have been a lot since we lost Theo, no outball which stops us and allows teams to press us, I know we like Giroud, but a striker who takes and makes himself chances makes all the difference.

Hi-brid

So frustrated. How many years has it been now exactly since we last demonstrated even the slightest clue how to break down a massed defence across the 18-yard line?

Chair

And we’re in the 4th place scrap again, same as every year. Well fucking done.

AFCEdwards

If we’re in a 4th place scrap then I’d say Chelsea, City and Liverpool are as well.

Chair

right, right
we’ll see at the end of the month when everyone is at least 6 points ahead, god forbid we lose our next game

TG

Have you seen our fixtures compared to city and chelsea? Time to focus on getting the 3 place and FA-cup final.

Remember the invincibles

Third place scrap. Unless you want to count Spurs ( let’s smash them at white fart lane atleast).

Chair

Scousers are in form and they’ll overtake us on account of them actually having good strikers. And yes, I do count spurs in at the moment, because I remember what happened last two seasons and that you shouldn’t assume anything. If we win next week, we *might* be safe, but on our current form, I’m not taking anything for granted. In any case, 4th place with 100 mil still sitting in the bank and with quite a few places in the team that clearly could be upgraded, this season is still a grave disappointment to me.

mastaofthegoonaverse

According to the media we were not supposed to be top eight.

JJ

Poo.

Ben

Giroud is the type of striker you want when the team is playing well. In the past, in games like this a, Van Persie, a Henry, heck even an Adebayor would produce a bit of magic to score the goal and get us the win. Its a shame but Giroud just doesn’t have that in his locker.

Jonnycakes82

That’s because he is a bag of shit.

Maniac

All he does is hold up play and the occasional flick to someone running on which, by my calculations, has worked only twice this season. At least Sanogo has some energy when he came on, even though he missed that absolute sitter. Meanwhile Giroud was laying sprawled out on the ground at the slightest of contacts. If the Ox, who’s half a foot smaller than Giroud, can stay on his feet after a challenge then so should he.

Bunburyist

To be fair, he was fouled constantly, stamped on, kicked, and the ref did fuck all. Pretty hard to be a reliable hold-up or link player when you’re getting run over the entire game with the ref refusing to support the rules.

But yeah, he’s a good striker, not a great one.

Summer priority.

Jonnycakes82

He stood in front of the ball when we were chasing the game so Stoke could waste more time,Tool.

Tommy Gunner

But, every Gooner and his dog knew it was a priority LAST summer, and look at what an incompetent mess that turned out to be

Bunburyist

No argument here.

Exiledgooner

I think in the joy of the Ozil signing (and we had and have every right to be thrilled with him, despite his media fuelled ‘dip’ in form) we rather forgot about the striker problem. Oh, and Ramsey scoring for fun as well. It’s not a priority this summer, it’s essential. Failure to buy established quality this summer will be indefensible, although really it was pretty indefensible last summer. I don’t really get all the Giroud hate though. He’s not the world’s greatest striker and doesn’t pretend to be, but he’s handy and on his day can give you that… Read more »

Mimir

The most frustrating part was that he was always looking for the flicks. There was no plan B. Against a static Sunderland or Norwich that may lead to fine team goals but against Hughes’ team (who kept their shape very well) it could never come off. Giroud’s play was totally one-dimensional – Receive ball with your back to goal, don’t retain it just flick it left or right. Also in the first half the ball bounced off him and to the Stoke defenders a lot of time. Even Crouch appeared to be an upgrade on him (Held the ball well,… Read more »

Honestly, Giroud is nowhere near good enough, with that midfield he should be banging them in. The reason the pundits said we would fall away is because we always fall away. We are not direct enough when attacking, we are to slow and labored and without Walcott we are way to slow on the counter attack. the blame has to fall at Wengers feet, he should have signed a striker in jan, but he buys a midfielder that’s too old and injured and after we have nursed him back to health he goes home a couple of weeks later, this… Read more »

Ö

What I really hate is the waiting till the 60th minute minimum before making any subs. Was watching that dire first half not enough? I get that Wenger was probably resting a fair few of them for the match against Bayern but still, he needed to do something to spark some life into the game. Ox coming on for Rosicky worked, but it should have been done 20 minutes earlier

mastaofthegoonaverse

“That midfield” has not exactly been too creative the last couple of months has it?

Gunny

Henry was the greatest striker Arsenal has ever had, of course Giroud looks bad by comparison.

But Adebayor and Van Persie often failed to provide the magic – there’s a reason it’s been eight years.

With the exceptions of Sir Ches, Mert and the Ox when he came on, the whole team was poor today.

Seriously?!

Yes the reason is Arsenal were always 2 or 3 players short, and for years we tried to win it with youth over experience. Van Persie or Adebayor were never gonna win the league for us. It looks like this year same story. For fucks sake how the fuck does a multi MILLION POUND organisation, end up with Kallstrom type bungling of a transfer? HOW????? At the very least sign a backup player….that can actually play??? Seriously.

No, I agree with you. We won games in January and February without looking convincing, but those were warning signs. We haven’t looked consistently sharp for a while now, and I’m disappointed but not surprised to see us dropping points.

Sanogo’s going to get a lot of stick for that miss, but that excuses all the other players who performed terribly on the day. This wasn’t Sanogo’s fault, the whole team was dire today, and this was a game we really needed to be winning – not grabbing a last minute draw from.

Now we’re tasked with getting wins against City and Chelsea to stand a chance. We’re still in it, but it’s not looking good at the moment.

rawgooner

Do not. DO NOT take it out on the kid ahead of a bunch of seasoned (I’m being polite) professionals. There are some out there that need to go back to the training ground and a) learn how to control a firm pass from 10-20 yards b) having received said pass find a player within 10 or 20 yards with the ball and finally c) not pretend that Gandalf’s fucking tackled you when yo get a little nudge. Exactly. We had no pace in our front four again. That’s not a problem when the opponent is camping in his own penalty are like Sunderland did last w-e, but against an opponent who uses a medium or high block we need at least one player with some pace in our front four. Our problem today was obvious from the moment the team selection was announced, but it still took 75 minutes before something was done about it. Oh well, Sanogo could have scraped something but there should be no blame put on his young shoulders for what was a ‘0-0’ mentality from both sets of players.

Two questions from today:
1. Why is Charlie Adam still allowed to play football?
2. Why doesn’t the Ox start every game? He has been our best player since he got back from injury, I felt we could have done a lot better with him on the whole time.

KoyaGun

I am sure it has been said many times that we need a striker good enough to deliver in situations like this. This hurts because I sincerely think this is a game we need to win but it’s gone and I move on. Stoke did Stoke and somehow, we could not do Arsenal. Onto the next one abeg…..

I feel like Wenger chose a wrong starting line up. Podolski does not offer much at all, no width, no speed, just coming to the center of the field to get 10-15 touches on the ball and improve his stats. Really frustrates how long Jack takes to come up from the floor after challenges, and how he is pointing finger at others but does nothing himself. we dont have that striker and tge midfield goals dried up with ramseys and walcotts injuries. depressing to say but it was always gonna come to this when we didnt buy in jan. i respect AW but it will be the same old spin. its getting tiresome.

Just piss poor! barley any chances created. Giroud is simply not a goal creator. We need someone who can create something out of nothing. His game is so predictable and honestly is just not good enough. We NEED a new striker this summer!! Which Chelsea widening the gap things are looking bad!
