Boss hoping for renewed Giroud

Arsene Wenger says he’s hoping that Olivier Giroud’s midweek goal against West Ham will give the striker new confidence ahead of the run in, and admitted that he’s had to overplay the former Montpellier man.

Giroud has struggled for form over the last couple of months but, with a tremendous first touch and a rifling finish, got the Gunners a crucial game on Tuesday night as they got their first Premier League win since March 16th.

Wenger believes that strike will do Giroud good, saying, “The quality of the goal gives him, I think, confidence again. It gives him credibility again for people who questioned his ability, so that is important.

“He has gone, like Mesut Ozil, through a more difficult period recently. It was a bit physical and mental as well with what happened to him.

“He is a strong lad, strong mentality, a strong, positive guy. He has a great mentality and that’s what I think got him back. He has scored 20 goals, that is a great record, and he is working very hard for the team.”

Although there have been some who declare him useless, or worse, most fans recognise the fact he’s a decent striker who has had no support all season, and has had to play when the presence of a decent alternative would have done the team, and him, some good.

And the Arsenal manager has admitted Giroud has had to play too often.

“For a while he played maybe too many games. Up front it’s difficult because every challenge he goes into is physical. He’s not a guy who moves away from people to get the ball.

“He’s a guy who fights with people to get the ball. When he comes out of the game he has 50 fights behind him. That is more demanding than the guy who just runs away.”

The HFB does tend to do best against teams below the top rung, so with the games we have left to play, let’s hope he can contribute to what’s left of this season.

Giroud's Glorious Hair

He may be shit and all that according to some people but boy on his day he do puts in a fight. Runs himself ragged. I don’t think so we have ever had a forward like him in last 10-15 years.

tomchou

Na na na na na na na na na Giroud. 17 May. We are gonna lift the trophy. A striker to give him competition in the summer. Oh dreams do come true

na na na na one of the worst conversion rates in the EPL. Nice hair tho

Do you have the best conversion rate in prem and the worst hair by that logic?

then we have to wait for another one year?
I guess we’d better sign a world class striker and give Giroud competition.

To be fair we do have a hell of a lot of stupid fans as soon as someone loses a bit of form they jump all over them it really bugs me!

Mooo

Every team has a lot of stupid fans. Look at Madrid, they hate on Di Maria for no reason and he always gives 100%. Barcelona fans were cussing their players after Madrid game. United fans and Sp*rs fans have been moaning all season. I think you get the point.

Arsepedant

True, but United and Scum fans have good reason to moan.

heroldgoon

as do we for we could have done alot better than giroud.

SwedeGooner

Stop defending him, he’s not the type of top striker this club needs or deserves! He’s more of a backup, rather than a first-pick. He has horrendous first touch, and ball controll (=technique sucks). His finish is extremely limited, too. In every top match, and certainly in many other lesser important matches, clear scoring opportunities are wasted due to his lack of ability, which has nothing to do with form. Examples are staggering, e.g. in the Arsenal – Everton match, he misses four chances, one obvious one is at the Özil-goal, where Giroud misses the ball and Özil, with his… Read more »

Otygooner

I remember the game against Westham I was watching the game with some friends, and everybody was on his case about how giroud cannot control a long ball,he is too lazy and too slow and even crouch is beter than him,
I remember I told them that he was the best we had and we had to suport him.But all they could say is that people like me are the ones who are dragging the club down coz I always suport it nomater the result

Runkeball

And then our Handsome French Boy brought that long ball down, controlled it just beautifully and hoofed it right in.

DR

If anyone thinks Giroud is lazy then they don’t know anything.

Slow, yes.

A little inconsistent in his finishing, sure.

But lazy?

Nothing wrong with supporting a player, do they actually think that Wenger will turn around and say ‘well, tommy titwater doesn’t think Giroud is good enough, I’d better go and buy Messi’?

Goonerneedsapint

The fact that Wenger didn’t sign another striker has got nothing at all to do with Giroud, yet a lot of anger is directed at him by some fans for not being the ‘world class’ player that we want. I remember he gave an interview a few months back saying he knew he was no Suarez. It’s not his fault that he is not world class, rested much or that he lacks the competition for a full game with a brilliant striker. When he plays, he usually does his best. For that reason, I support him, even when he misses.… Read more »

naija gooner

well, i guess he has play his part for us this season. But seriously it is so obvious we need a new world class striker.

Özil's Eyes on Arsene's Hot Thighs

You won’t have to hope if you just ACT and get a half decent striker. One of the rare times he’s had more than a touch to score a goal and he’s the best thing since sliced bread. Pfft.

Michael

People say that some fans get carried away when a player loses form and label them as useless. But on the flipside a player does one good thing and everyone starts sucking each others dicks about how good he is. The truth is, as blogs has pointed out in a very fair and balanced way, Giroud is a decent striker, that can do a job pretty well. Is that enough to become champions if he had a back up? Hard to say. I would prefer someone to be brought in who has different qualities to Giroud, speed and skill. That… Read more »

Mpls

Well I’ll flip your comment right back. If you realize the issue is one of not having another option with different qualities, which no one would dispute, then do not be a smug fuck who will not recognize a beautiful goal.

FFS, if you think people with foaming mouths should not be criticized for calling for the heads of players, then STFU and appreciate when a player shows a quality play.

It’s exactly this ‘OK he did one thing good but I’m still gonna piss over it’ that many of us are sick of.

Crispy

The reason you overplayed him is that you couldn’t ‘find’ another striker in the whole of world football in 2 transfer windows and the so called cover is either massively out of his depth and shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the first team and the other alternative is truly mental with delusions of grandeur when he’s not rubbing up against taxis.

It shouldn’t take £7.5m a year to realise that.

I like Giroud. 20 goals this season and the goal against West Ham was brilliant.

Parisian Weetabix

Argh Arsene we all know he’s played too much! I love Wenger but his decision to go a full season with one striker is utterly unacceptable. It’s horrible for Giroud who’s had pressure heaped on him (and has done brilliantly incidentally), and it’s horrible for the team who have no plan B. It just makes no sense; genuinely it fucks my mind trying to come up with the reason for it. A manager who is so brilliant at the most difficult, intricate parts of management as to make him all but irreplaceable allows himself to be undone and his team… Read more »

Contracts. Although they may be difficult to understand, tend to be two-way arrangements. For this reason alone. I think we should vilify Arsene, because what kind of loyal arsehole would keep the best interests of the club above his own personal ambition???? I vote, we vote about whether or not we should vote him out, after an agreed vote. Then, no matter what happens, we should gang up on someone, because fuck boredom. I personally have a direct issue with people who don’t see what I see, when I want to see it. Idiots. I’ve spent years momentarily thinking about… Read more »

You may wanna consider the fact that arsene tried to sign higuain and Suarez and didn’t succeed. Even if you look at the coming summer, which world class striker is really available?

Mikel Artekkers

Marco Reus anyone? He’s got pace, he makes runs, he can score goals, and he can play left wing (Santi Cazorla is not a left winger, it makes me angry every time Wenger plays him there as he has no pace and cant really defend). Should be available for about £20M and he’d probably prefer coming to us than United.

Crispy

Good call. Add Lars Bender and I’d crack a small smile

Momo (@MuhamLAD)

Marco Reus £20m would be a steal, especially when comparing that to Fellaini for £25m. I’d love to see him at the club. Something that always bugs me is when people saying “We should get *** in the window” though. 90% of the time the person mentioned is just high-profile (e.g. Costa & Jackson Martinez) even though there’s a high chance no one has seen them play regularly. Arsenal have a scouting network which (hopefully) expands beyond Youtube videos and streams, I’m sure they are well aware of these players and there’s a valid reason for why we aren’t chasing… Read more »

I really hope Sunderland stay up, Don Vito is far too good to be playing in the Championship. Maybe he could go to a team like Southampton. Good lad.

Funny to hear the commentators say Chel$ki must win to keep their title challenge alive. Hahahaha! More like 3rd place scrap, for which we look favourites, innit? Cunts. Finally getting fucked, just like they deserve.

Just look how toothless they look without Hazard. ONE player. And people have the gall to say our injuries are no excuse.

F3AR-BONER

Oh Chel$ki how much I love to despise everything about you! To be honest Sunderland looked terrible in the 2nd half, all the more sweeter that they won:)

Neil

Good to see Chelsea taking the defeat in a sporting manner as usual. Maybe it wasn’t a penalty, but they seem to have forgetten that Ramirez should’ve seen to red in the first half for elbowing Seb Larrson.

Just seen Maureen’s interview lol. Sarcastically congratulating Mike Riley (boss of the refs).

Phew. Looks like Damien Thorne and his acolytes won’t be winning it after all.

Fatgooner

I love it when the Chavs get stuffed! Anyone for the title except those nasty cunts.

This Sunderland performance and results puts in perspective our pathetic 6-0 drubbing there. Fortunately for the Black Cats they actually had a manager who knew what he was doing.

Neil

We beat Sunderland 3-1 and 4-1. Wenger must really have known what he was doing to beat a team that beat Chelsea, eh?

They beat them, so we should beat them..blah blah…that argument never stands up, I’m afraid. We beat Liverpool twice this season. We also won in Dortmund, who beat Real Madrid 2-0 there.

See how this works? It simply doesn’t.

Chairman Meow

Why don’t you just love it them instead of using it as a shit excuse to criticise wenger. you are sooooo annoying. and like neil says, what you’re saying is nonsense

bip

Hehehe should have seen mourin’s face.

John

Wenger quotes prove he’s just as reactionary as the people who have criticised Giroud.

One good goal doesn’t make Giroud World class just like a few bad games didn’t make him terrible when the truth is he’s somewhere in between.

Giroud is not the striker to lead one of the biggest teams in the World to success by himself and Wenger needs to buy in the summer.

Renton

I get what you’re saying but if Wenger is asked a loaded question, do you expect him to throw Giroud under the bus? No, he’s never done that he simply doesn’t throw his players under the bus. Because he’s not Jose Mourinho. And thank fuck for that.

John

Renton, if his actions didn’t confirm his words I’d agree with you but he’s had several transfer windows to buy a better player and hasn’t. He’ll use that one good goal as a reason not to buy anyone else and that is the problem

gammhunn

BUUAAHAHAHAHAA Chelsea.

Mourinhos post match press conference just makes it all sweeter.

subhrö

We r forgetting the quality of goals giroud gave us he may not provide scintillating goals but doesnt miss the sitters nd moreover in the later part of our campaign our midfielders didnt.provide him with considerable no. of opportunities but still he has 20 goals. So kindly appreciate what he did for our club

Henry! Chance!! Goal!!!

The difference between winning the league this year was down to one player. We didn’t fight hard enough to get him and Liverpool fought tooth and nail to keep him. If we got him, we would have wrapped up the league weeks ago. Nothing against Giroud, I like what he brings to the table but we also need a striker with other qualities that Giroud does not have. We need variety

Pedro

Irrelevant, but I hope Mike Dean shoves a dildo right up Mourinho’s cunt.

santori

…now that he has openly criticised the ref, hope there is some serious blow back over the coming games with decisions going against him.

santori

I mean he must not mind a snowball effect to orally assault a Ref so openly. May get some serious cream pie in his face.

Runkeball

Remember the Swedish ref he accused of being corrupt who retired after all the death threats? Maybe a stronger reaction from some of footballs governing bodies are in place this time?

Neil

He stupidly thinks that they can’t prove sarcasm. Mike Dean is a terrible ref, I’ll give him that. I don’t think he’s biased, he’s just useless. Still, he should’ve sent off Ramirez at 1-1 in the first half so I’m not sure what he’s complaining about.

Saw a few of the Chav fans shouting abuse at their team as they went off. How many games unbeaten under Maureen was it? Ridiculous thing to do, even though I hate the cunt.

santori

If Giroud can improve his positioning further and crucially finishing, he may not need quite as much pace to do damage. He is already getting into decent positions albeit quite often a yard off pace. this is where better anticipation may help. Ibrahimovic isn’t the quickest striker either and the sort of game Giroud plays is a bit similar. The crucial issue for us is getting more pace up top to adopt a different approach to our normal game. This has been critically missing for some time now. RVP (also not the quickest) has the ability to beat a player… Read more »

Don’t know about anybody else but I am fucking ecstatic over the Chelsea Sunderland score. I can barely contain myself.

santori

Yeah I can’t seem to decide who I’d prefer to win it (all bad options) ahead of us but one thing is for certain not Chelsea.

I’d rather not mugmashers either, the press will have a field day and they will get cocky again (or more cocky than ever). I suppose I’d begrudgingly accept City (just to stick it up United).

santori

and I really hope Chelski gets stuffed in the CL.

Mpls

And so ‘Master Tactician’ #2 flops in the same week.

santori

maybe its a depth issue.

santori

Real pity we did not get something out of these 3 games – Stoke, Swansea and Everton. They were all winnable and 8 points between them.

Our sane Fenger

How can you get 8 points from 3 games?

Tsardom

I still say if we stay healthy next year we can win it all, CL, FA, and BPL. If Giroud has Ramsey, Walcott, Ozil & co. it can add 10 goals to his total. He is better than given credit for. Since all the injuries teams just collapse in on him and it makes it extremely difficult for him. With Ramsey playing like a number 10 just in behind him and Walcott stretching the defense with his pace that will open things up for him and add to his scoring. I don’t think he has been struggling so much lately… Read more »

To compare Giroud with Ibra was a new one! But that’s the cheapest and best way of getting us back to a winning mentality – to bring Ibra in for the last to years of his career. Splash the money and you will get a Man that scares the shit out of the kids in our squad and teach them what it takes to win a mans game. That kind if leadership is what’s needed if Jack, Ramsey, Gibbsy and the others are to truely grasp what this game is about. And 60 odd goals over two years of course!
