After signing his new contract which will see him take charge of the club until 2017, Arsene Wenger has told fans they can expect the club to be very active in the transfer market.
It’s something we have heard before from the club, but last time around it was Ivan Gazidis telling people ‘We can do things that would surprise you’. Wenger is never usually so forthright about the summer activity, preferring to remain cautious about any possible spending.
However, asked by the official site if the fans should ‘expect a big summer’, he said, “Yes, they should expect that. What I can promise is that we work very hard on a market that is very, very congested with many people who have a lot of money.
“But we have a big advantage, players want to join us and if we find the right quality I’m sure we can strengthen the team.”
The other key difference is that this summer the money from new commercial deals and sponsorships kicks in. It’s not something that will happen in the future, it’s now, and on top of the resources the club already has it puts Arsenal in a good position to do quality business, something the Frenchman acknowledges.
“We have built a stadium, the fact that we have paid a big part of the debt back and the weight of the debt back now is not as strong and heavy as it was before. The fact that the Financial Fair Play rule comes in hopefully will stop craziness that happened on this market. With these two together, I think we can fight on a more even level than before.”
With fans used to business being done as the club try and bargain their way to better prices, there now seems an acceptance that the sooner we get things done the better.
“We know we have to have a successful June and July,” he said. “That’s where you strengthen the team. It’s very important that we are good now in the next two months until the end of August, that we can give to the team some more quality and go into next season with the belief we got from the FA Cup.
“It’s the start of a new team and I believe that victory was crucial in that belief.”
Arseblog News would suggest that some measure of caution is taken over these comments, but it’s certainly the strongest statement of intent we’ve heard for a long time.
Now, get shopping Arsene.
Beat ya to it Blogs. Heh.
But seriously though exciting times.
I love Arsenal to death but i’ll only believe it when i see it
Time to walk the walk!
Or, better yet, walk the talk!
We only took 13 Points from the top 7 Clubs. Up 2 from last year when we only took 11 from top 7. City, Chelsea and Liverpool took 27, 24 and 22 Points from top 7.So it is clear where the title challenge was lost. We struggle to go toe to toe with the best teams. Personally i think we lack a player like Vieira in midfield. A big leader of men powerhouse to balance out a midfield full of small technical players. We saw how much it meant to get a player like Flamini back in the team at… Read more »
I fucking love this club!!!!
Does this mean we can get Sergio Aguero for 50 mil and 300 k a week.
Fuck yeah.
2017 not 2014 🙂
Asshole.
Sorry! The CHELSKI fan I call my brother did that. Apologies, dear Mr/Ms Chemelem.
I think I will be taking less heart and stress pills next season. It is going to b a great season
I Understand you. But watching Arsenal this season has been helpful to my health problems.
For instance just before the FA cup final I encountered a terrible case of constipation, But 10 minutes into the match that was no longer the case…
Long story short I was relieved at half time.
Blogger…
“After signing his new contract which will see him take charge of the club until 2014”
Wenger seems like a man reborn of late doesn’t he? So much positivity coming from all quarters of the club, these are the times we’ve all been waiting for!
Take charge of the club till 2014? Sound Groundhog Day ish.
Blogs….it 2017 in the first line. 😉
Ive waited a long time to hear these words ,hopefully a new era of success starts with this
Has everyone else renewed their season ticket that needs to be renewed by this Sunday… on the 1st of June… this Sunday?
Despite my outrageous cynical comments I am sure that we will splash the cash.
We don’t need to spend loads, we just need the right players and I am excited about this Summer regardless of the timing of Arsene’s comments.
Glad he is staying put.
I’ve been on the season ticket waiting list for about 10 yrs. I made it near to the top and have been offered one the past two summers but unfortunately couldn’t afford it.
I am desperately praying that they’ll offer me another one! But I fear that the FA Cup win and promised transfers may mean that more people in the queue above me will grab their chance of a seat 🙁
I just wish I lived in England so I could put myself on the waiting list.
Diaby is like a new signing
And Vela would be like an old signing
Advent of the LAOS?
Wouldn’t that have been Flams?
Or Jens Lehmann. Or Sol Campbell.
Mother of God……The intent is all pretty interesting…… Hope we do our business soon enough and not try our luck at the last minute bargain buying or go around plucking waste-overs.
It’s now been nearly two weeks since arsenal last won a trophy. Wenger out
I don’t know he fans can just sit there while the club endures a trophy drought like this. I reckon we should sign Brendan Rodgers. He’s won loads of trophies in the last two weeks, not least of which is “Most Bizarre Signing of a 70’s Throwback Carthorse Centre Forward Since the Last Liverpool Manager Signed That Drunk Geordie Bloke”‘, “Best Unintentional Impression of David Brent” and “Most Curious Accent”.
Exciting times. I just hope that we do our business early this summer.
I don’t think there’ll be much movement of the best players before the WC unless we want to pay way too much for a player (like the potential 40m-50m Luiz to PSG deal). More likely to make initial contact now but do the deal after.
Sadly old Arseblogger you’ve just made a mistake in quoting his contract expires in 2014. If only! not a Wenger hater but feel he should have gone out on a high
How are you so sure his final season for the club, whenever that may be, won’t be trophy-laden?
Bloggs,
2017*
I refuse believe a single word from that statement…obviously till something happens. On the whole I see this as a step forward, but no more 4th place finish is a trophy bulls*it.
What are u talking about?
To be fair, that’s what the interviewer asked. his response was the usual guarded one we are accustomed to.
Another curious thing is this interview was done on the 18th, while it’s just gone live on the .com today.
The .com media team has been busy celebrating!
If we add the 2-3 quality players needed, his next 3 years at Arsenal could be very very successful
Barry, Richards and Remy?! Sweet!
Can’t tell if you’re being serious or not with any of the three players but please tell me this is a joke.
thanks
So hard to land sarcasm.
guess the name “Greek tragedy” didn’t give it away then 🙂 and some shall fall on stony ground
Thank Christ!
White, Keith and Moses…..
Why not go with the usual: Frey, Eto’o, Kalou, Samba?
Barton, Charlie Adam and Rio Ferdinand. …
Sorry company Rio’s keeping these days.
More likely to be Barry’s nephew, Remy’s third cousin and Sanogo’s brother – Wenger knows!
Thumb me down all you want, but I’m going to take Wenger’s words with a pinch of salt.
It’s become a familiar pattern now that I refuse to raise my hopes for:
1. Beginning of summer – Lots of noise about this being the biggest summer ever. Transfer war chest etc….
2. Middle of summer – We’re in for top, top players if available.
3. End of summer – We couldn’t find anyone of top, top quality.
“3. End of summer – We couldn’t find anyone of top, top quality.”
hmm, as in the last summer?
I’ve come to the realisation that signing Ozil was more of a fluke than any real insightful planning. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time. And if you think about the summer as a whole – Ozil was our only real purchase that summer at around £42m. So when our transfer budget was touted at £100m, we only spent £42m. I got sucked into the whole euphoria of Ozil and expected money to be splashed in the winter but lo and behold Wenger reverted back to type – a mad dash for a… Read more »
Ozil, Cazorla, Mertesacker, Podolski, Arteta … all end of summer buys. Absolute crap, the lot of them, I guess.
Ozil – a fantastic signing but bought by fortunate circumstances.
Cazorla – another fantastic signing but bought from a club with huge financial turmoil, otherwise Wenger would have steered clear.
Mert, Poldi, Arteta – Come on, are you really telling me that these three signings were top quality when signed and made rival fans green with envy? because that is the type of players I want for Arsenal.
I agree with you, but I feel like you missed a trick with Poldi. He was signed while RvJudas was still around, long before the end of the SUmmer 🙂
was AW talking about the World Cup? Or the series against Sri Lanka? Or the final of BGT?
or about the likelihood of scoring large in the transfer market and having a real pop next season? Get in!
first of all i am very happy with wengers new deal. i cant imagine the club without him. on transfers: i hope we sign a right back. i like jenko, but he has limits. debuchy was excellent in the french national team on tuesday. he is very good in ariel duels, he is very fast and attacking minded. i hope we can keep verminator at the team,.we are title contenders and teams like man city, liverpool, chelsea have also good backup centre backs. we dont need dm, i dont think it was the main problem this season. at the big… Read more »
Hmmm 2013/2014 s’getit
2017 of course! Fixed, thanks all.
I love this man.
I’m just delighted to hear he signed a new contract.
i see the bindippers have signed ricky lambert – not the most obvious replacement for suarez, but then they’ve needed a big target man since losing crouch
back to 7th with you, scousers!
I’ve been a Gooner long enough to know that we are very unlikely to make a major signing until CL qualification(proper) is assured.
i’ve been a gooner long enough to know that we used to only make a major signing once their qualification into the tuesday club was assured
hence charlie = keeper, and clive allen was shipped out for king kenny
Think we will be surprised – I think that the squad signings will all be tied up within the next few weeks before the world cup kicks off.
It will be the one or two ‘bigger’ signings that will probably be announced after the world cup.
To be fair, Last summer Ivan Gazillions said they could do thing to surprise us, and we signed Mesut Ozil for a ludicrous amount of money.
I expect this summer will be no different, and I am looking forward to the exciting time ahead.
I just hope we dont do a sp***s and spunk up £100m on shit
Don’t you mean £100m on Tottenham?
Witoldo, it’s the same thing.
AW can’t guarantee every signing will turn out to be a good one but he always says that 5 changes per window max (including youngsters moving up) or you start to break the team spirit which is what wins games. AVB /Bellendi bought too many in one go.
Witoldo is quoting Jack Wilsheres comment on your bus….what do we think of tottenham…shit, what do we think of shit…..Tottenham. : /
Shit just got real.
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!
I think the core element of our team is very good. We just need to kind of replace a few.members who were first team but are in the twilight of their career a la Arteta. He would be a great option to come in in the lesser games or to cover along with Flamini and Rosicky. Quality but might be onthe downward trajectory slope of their career. Im excited to see what Diaby can offer if fit. No doubt a quality player but we have seen Rosicky come back from longterm injury with a classy impact on our team im… Read more »
“The fact that the Financial Fair Play rule comes in hopefully will stop craziness that happened on this market.” And then David Luiz goes to P$G for a rumored 50 million pounds. Financial Fair Play will always be a joke until they start banning clubs from the CL for repeat violations, which they’ll never do because they’ll lose TV revenue (As Wenger pointed out previously). That said, it might just be the trophy talking, but I’m actually so pumped for this window. Apart from the Fabregas rumours. If they’d come along a year ago, then sure, go for it. But… Read more »
I don’t get this Fabregas denial one tiny bit. Fabregas was a WORLD CLASS player who won us games ON HIS OWN COUNTLESS TIMES. Not only is he world class but he’s DONE IT in the Premier League already and FOR US. So he would do it again. He is better than every single player on our team. Real Madrid’s famous 2000s midfield had loads of world class players. Adding world class players can only help. Think for one second — Ramsey, Fabregas, Ozil in the same team. That is probably the best midfield in the world. A 4-5-1 with… Read more »
The thing is, right now we need Song more than Fabregas. On paper, packing the midfield with Ramsey, Fabregas and Ozil would be amazing, and against smaller teams, it’d result in absolute maulings. But Fabregas would cost a fair chunk of cash, between 25-40 million pounds, depending on the rumor in question. Given the need for a new striker, a DM, and a right back, plus the inflated nature of the market… Right now, I’m leaning towards grabbing him once we’ve sorted out the rest of the squad, but it’ll also come down to how much money Wenger’s been given.… Read more »
Sorry dude, you lost me at ‘we need Song’.
Fabregas better than all our current mf???? Seriously are you being real or your trying to pull some legs? I personally would take any one of cazorla, rosicky, ramsey over cesc anyday anytime fabregas won us games on his own but ramsey wins us games on hiw own in style he is a better defender, better physically and would run all day without dropping his head(something fabregas those too often) whenever things don’t go his way, santi has this way of takinq out four players on his own whicj creates space for others, and rosicky? Against bayern the players were like “wdf… Read more »
as much as i like santi skil i take cecs over him any day ,with cecs you have at least 15 goal and as many asssit a season, Rosicky is near the end of his playing day and last season i wish we would have someone like cecs when ramsey got injured for nearly half season. 25 M for a world class player (MU would need to spend 40 to get him) yes please …and he know the house
Plus I’d like to add we nearly won the league with Flamini and Fabregas playing. Re-uniting that would be nothing short of spectacular. Plus Cazorla is 29 now; he’s a sick player but Fabregas has just turned 27. We’d have a superabundance of quality if we resigned him. That kind of overflow is enjoyed by Championship winning sides.
We don’t have to play them all at the same time. All I’m saying is every year we fall short through injuries. Winning teams have shitloads of WC players. Fabregas is WC, played for us before, had a partnership with Flamini and is a guaranteed 15 goal a season 20+ assist. He contributed more than Cazorla has done, if you watched both careers, despite Cazorla’s free-kick in the FA Cup final, Fabregas was our best player by miles every game. He ran the pitch and scored against Sp*rs ffs even though he is slowish. Taking Rosicky over Fabregas is lunacy.… Read more »
I would swap Fabregas for Santi anyday. I like Santi…that free kick in the FA cup final was great. But he was not particularly great this year. He has the necessary skills, he just couldn’t breakthrough for some reason. I don’t want to see him go though. Let’s have them both!
I think Santi’s problem is that he loves playing behind the striker, but with Ozil here he’s been shunted out wide where he’s less effective. And if Cesc comes, I’m fairly sure either Cesc or Ozil will take Santi’s wide place, which isn’t where either of them are close to their amazing best. That said, having to choose between two of the best creative midfielders in the world, and a third who isn’t half bad isn’t the worst position for us to be in.
I know u got my back blogs*2017_
GK Szczesny,RB Aurier,CB Per,CB Koscielny,LB Gibbs,CM Ramsey,CM Fabregas,LW Di Maria,AMC Ozil,RW Cuadrado,ST CF Hulk.
Disagree with not using a more defensive minded, disciplined midfielder in there.
But I have thought about the idea of buying Hulk. Not been mentioned at all in the media and has all the attributes needed to lead the line.
That’s too many new names. We don’t want a load of individual stars, we want a team — “Together” like the Invincibles.
One or two new top names, one or two new squad players, replacements for Sagna & Fabianski. That’ll do — the core is there already.
ps. I’d take Cesc back like a shot whether we “need” him or not. Top, top quality. And an adopted son of Arsenal who still loves the club.
A top signing over the next week Arsene will have us all believing and buzzing.
Shopping spree?!?! Please make sure to pick up one or both of a Balotelli and/or a Cavani.
If anyone can make Balotelli grow up, it’s Le Boss. Plus, I’d love to see Le Boss coach Balotelli to superstardom just to shove it up the arse of the Special Needs One, who described Balotelli as “uncoachable”. That’d sure put the lock and seal on who’s the better coach (not that we don’t know it already).
An interesting thought, but personally I think it’s too much of a gamble. It’d be wonderful if it came off, a disaster for the whole team if it didn’t.
Well… honestly speaking some players might actually be uncoachable. There are some who even Le Boss may not stop from rubbing their bellies against a taxi you know….
I don’t think Fabregas being re-signed wud mean the end if Cazorla. Rosicky only has a year left on his contract. By next summer he will be 34 and Cesc wud be a brilliant replacement. Trouble is he may not be available next summer. Therfore we need to think ahead and go for him now. Even with all our midfielders weak most ended up playing a midfield of Flamini and Kastrom towards the end of the season. You can’t have too many top top players.
cesc won’t be re-signed. it’d be too weird and i think they won’t want to sell and he won’t want to leave
I seriously doubt Cesc would be satisfied with the squad role Rosicky so perfectly delivers. He’d want to be back to starting every match. Which of him, Ozil, and Ramsey defends then? I think that’s a waste of Ramsey’s range, and Cesc’s. So is lining up on the wing.
That said, if he’s game I’d love to see him back in the Arsenal colors. After we get the striker situation sorted.
AW is usually conservative – we definitely hear this every summer – but I’m excited by his comments in regards to June and July. Usually he is saying the transfer window starts in the last week, nothing happens before. His comments give some optimism. Take it with a pinch of salt, but hey:
– we signed 42.5m player
– we ended the trophy drought coming back from 2-0 – hows that for mental strength and leadership Paul Scholes you twat
COYG
Just a repeat for listeners on our overseas broadcast:
“- we ended the trophy drought coming back from 2-0 – hows that for mental strength and leadership Paul Scholes you twat”
Simply this, for all I want him to sign x and y and play z, he knows more about football than I could possibly hope to. And Arsenal is all he cares about.
I believe in him.
Missing arsenal already. Can’t wait to get the next season rolling. I’m sure well sign a few decent players, we have a pretty strong core already, just need a few tweaks here and there and wer ready to rule. COMEON ARSENAL.
So, who do we need this summer then? (mostly based on unfounded press speculation so please treat this as pub talk not presenting a transfer plan to the board). GK – someone to keep Szcz on his toes but realistically a 2nd choice stopper. I’d go for someone like Pantmillion on a freebie myself but if they’re a decent price someone like Ruddy would be great, certainly looks like there’s some proven PL performers available at a decent price this summer. RB – that Aurier rumour keeps coming up, he’s the right sort of age and (admittedly entirely from YouTube)… Read more »
Double Whamey
I think you’ve written a great analysis there. My only quibble would be to replace Remy with Bony in your list of strikers, and I’d say we want to buy Morata plus one of Vela or Bony, rather than just any two or the three. Morata would be fantastic for us.
No more “We will buy if we feel a player will improve the squad”. Im sure are strikers better than Giroud and Sonogo.
There are certainly different types of striker to OG and YS but not many better at their styles of play (and age IRO YS). We need alternatives rather than straight replacements.
Our midfield is one of the best in Europe. We need a RB replacement but the defense is as solid as ever. Sort the attack and trophies will flow.
You can’t say this, sign Vela and Aurier, and think that the fans will be happy… Come on Wenger, go big! Bring in a top winger (Reus, Di Maria, or Alexis) and a big striker (Cavani, Balotelli, Mandzukic) and we’ll immediately compete for the Champions League!
its is not, yes player by player he is one of the best around but its unbalance,
when theo/ox/gnabry got injured we lost all the pace we got there (and they all prefer playing right side), the lack of pace specially left side (podolski is ok but really we could do much better), the lack of physical player thrown middle (flamini pass his time collecting yellow rather that help the team)
If these words are backed up by action it would represent a massive change in the way we do things. Even with Ozil it was last minute. And it’s always last minute. I want to be proved wrong. But if you dilly dally again Arsenal I’ll never hope for change. Please be ruthless this time and get more than we need rather than just enough. We get injuries every season. Why keep repeating the same failures. Good luck all.
We almost had Higuain and Saurez well before the transfer window was almost close to shutting.
I can’t wait for Soloman Kalou to arrive!
dnt get rude m8
At your house for dinner?
