AS, the Spanish sports daily, are reporting that Real Sociedad are close to making a deal with Arsenal which would see them buy out the club’s 50% sell-on stake in Carlos Vela.
The Mexican has been strongly linked with a move back to London this summer, but now it seems that the Basque side are ready to take full control of the striker’s rights.
The report suggest that they will pay Arsenal a fee of around €11m, having paid €3.5m for him in 2012. Although it’s not 100% confirmed, they say only small details need to be confirmed between the two clubs for the deal to go through.
Last week, the Real Sociedad president, told the press that Arsenal were going to exercise their buy back clause on Vela which would have required him to spend a season with the Gunners before they could sell him, so it appears that some was measure of brinksmanship to force their hand.
Whether any deal would have gone through is up for debate anyway, with Vela assuring the La Liga outfit he would rather stay there than return to London. And with serious interest from Champions Atletico Madrid, it looks as if a Spanish stay is much more likely, whether that’s in the Basque country or the capital.
If the deal does go through, it’s a fine piece of financial business by Arsenal, with fans hoping that money can go to boost the squad where it’s really needed this summer.
Why is it that the only transfer news that seems concrete is about players NOT coming to Arsenal…
Would be really nice to hear some concrete news about players coming in… But still no need to lose our knickers, Vela wasn’t the answer to our problems if this is true but he would have made. Great squad player.
After 2 days of expected but still shitty news, Arsenal fans need some good news, on the bright side it’s only June…
Excellent point made on 7amkickoff the other day was that we’re unlikely to get anything announced until the Puma deal kicks in at the start of July – they won’t want to announce players holding up the old nike shirt! Rather simple but makes sense to me.
With about 20million euros coming in from players who left two and three years ago, I’d say this transfer window is not actually going to badly. I just hope Wenger has got a serious plan on what to do with these cash reserves.
Watching the game tonight, that Costa Rican kid Campbell looks pretty decent. Maybe we should put in a sneaky bid for him with the cash.
We just have to find out who owns him 😉
am I out of context? not really as we are in the mode of bringing in strikers….
Carlos Vela?
No, no…. Bring home Joel Campbell!!! F’ck me… he has pissed all over Uruguay and looks a hell of a player!!!
Serge Aurier looked immense!! 2 assists and numerous good tackles and bursting runs down the wing. Would be a perfect replacement for Sagna..
Glad we’re not re-signing him, I personally never rated him as an Arsenal player, definitely not the player that is going to move us forward.
..its going to be a long summer.
off topic but OMG this video!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mymOoWPBegY
I find it unlikely, but I hope this means we’re interested in Griezmann, and are using Vela as a bargaining chip to lower his price. Younger, better goals per minute ratio than Vela and playing on the wing too.
yeah, he made so many of vela’s goals.
Griezmann didn’t look particularly good last night..Hope it was just an off day. Campbell looked immense. Taking on the Uruguayan defense alone. I think we should now get him back and give him a chance.
11m for the 50% sell on clause will be an excellent deal imo. For Sociedad to benefit from this deal, they must be confident of selling him for more than 22m. Doubt Atletico will be willing to pay them that amount. Don’t think the clubs who can pay that amount are interested in him as of now.
Hey look, someone else we’re not buying
Excellent. We can pop that extra money on top of anything we bid for Alexis Sanchez
Alexis Sanchez plays so much similar to Walcott, I do not know if he’ll be a good fit….
He plays on the left as an inverted winger, sort of like Ribery but less ugly, wheras Walcott would play on the right. Besides, Walcott won’t be back to his best until january next year, so would it be that bad having another winger in the squad to replace him in that time? I also feel Sanchez is a more efficient finisher than Theo, and I’d prefer him as a tricky winger that helps break down defences, wheras Theo prefers to play on the last man and play on the counter. They are the same in that they are both… Read more »
I haven’t seen much of Sanchez but I understand he’s very right footed. Although AW likes lefties on the right and righties on the left, he does prefer players that can still cross on the unflavoured foot.
Can / does he?
Also don’t forget Gnarby and Campbell.
pipe dream. but, yes, he’d be excellent
This is the best outcome. Vela doesn’t wanna come back and we want other players..
Pack your bags Mr chips! Madrid a be calling…
Excellent. Arsenal are the best run bank I know of.
Hey wait a minute…
This fiscal responsibility b.s is really irritating,I thought after PUMA we were gonna be spending ,
I am not even talking about like P$G , just get the targets before the season starts. It looks like we are waiting for bargains or Top teams to make their players available
Maybe wenger is waiting to see 1- who shines at the WC and 2- who gets injured at the WC. We don’t want to over pay for someone who gets injured, and i would rather have a really good playing WC player join thats cheaper than a big named star that doesn’t perform at the highest level.
Getting top players from top teams sounds like a better idea to me than ‘swooping’ for Vela.
See ‘Walker’ reply above. Then wait until July!
The fact that they keep increasing ST renewals is what makes it particularly galling – either invest in the squad or invest in the fans and club and reduce prices.
Wenger had better have some very hot irons in the fire because at the moment, we’d are letting good, affordable players slip through our fingers. If we’re scrabbling around on transfer deadline day, we’ll all have to look back to this week and wonder what the fuck happened.
Let’s hope that’s not the case because we could have just signed two quality players for 35m which is a steal in today’s market. In Wenger we trust (the word trust being said in a questioning, pitch raised manner).
Why do I get the feeling you will be among the first line for bitching about only getting Vela if we got him?
I’m fully behind Wenger however I don’t understand how it was said that no business can be done before the World Cup, look what the likes of PSG, Barca and that other place have done already, seriously hope Wenger has something up his sleeve.
Yea David Luiz for 50 million that’s some fine, efficient business.
I think PSG has paid over the top for him. 50 million pounds is way too much. Chelsea executives have managed to extract the maximum possible fees from this deal.
He didn’t say ‘no business’! He said something like ‘in my experience very little business gets done before the WC’. Tell us, is your experience different?
I think he has a 2nd reason for saying things will happen a little later for us, which is that (as walker says above) we are very unlikely to announce any new players until after the Puma deal kicks in. AW may have some lined up signed and sealed (maybe not) BUT it’s unlikely to be announced until July.
Try waiting a month before you start whinging.
I love the optimism to the point of making up excuses ahead of time.
I understand it can get annoying having everyone bitch about Arsenal inaction in the transfer market -but people are only acting on their experience.
It will go straight down to Kroenke’s pocket, lol xD
You must be a troll or you’d understand that’s impossible…
I honestly doubt we will see any signings annouced until pumas official release of the new kit.
It wouldnt sense to annouced a player and show him holding a nike kit. It would seriously boost shirt sales as well seeing a khedira, a balotteli or even reus or sanchez signed along with the release of the new kit.
Think about it.
Same thing happened with podli. We signed him before the transfer window started but we didnt see it annouced until the kit was ready.
Throw in a left back and line queue them up with the new kits like the day the British lads extended!
But then again, we all knew about it. If Arsenal sign someone we will all know about it long before it is officially announced, how long did it take to officially announce Sanogo?
Buy Mr Chips , There can only be one
Don’t panic fellas, in Arsene we trust..
Easy now. I always liked Vela, I hope he does well in his career. But to be honest in light of the Cesc news, I’ve shifted my views a bit. It’s sort of like how you know you shouldn’t go out again with a girl you’ve already dated and broken up with. She might have been awesome to date, you have fond memories of wonderful times together. But there’s a reason you broke up. Whether or not it was your decision at the time. Look, There’s always going to be disappointments in love. And it’s frustrating when you’re single and… Read more »
Just making me think about my past relationships to be honest. But I see a metaphor hidden in there somewhere.
Makes perfect sense yacine, you should take over as Arsenal’s PR.
And then you get old and end up settling for the fourth place trophy.
100x better than a 5th place trophy. Ask a spud (if you know one)…. or a toffee etc
You had me all the way until “but in the end nothing beats finding a great girlfriend.”
yeah…but no other girl will be able to fill the void left behind by her (Fabregas).
Watching Sanchez at the moment. He would be a great signing. Best not hold my breath.
We have Gnabry who plays there , we don’t want to kill him
Loan Gnabry to Championship side
Sanchez gets injured for 3 weeks (read: months)
Recall Gnabry
???
Profit!
I like Sanchez, but, for me, it’s Balotelli all day long. Sanchez offers us another neat little forward. Balotelli offers us a beast of a forward better suited to the PL.
or jackson martinez
I’m confused. I haven’t really seen him but yesterday he played right (mainly) but for club is sounds like he’s played on the left. So what’s his best position?
We’re OK with TW, Gnarby and Campbell on the right.
We are a bit short of pace on the left with Poldi and Santi.
Always been (and still am) a big AW fan but boy there better be a plan. Because if not then Arsenal are really stretching what fans are prepared to accept
Bressano..I bet that will be our first signing..
Have him grow an afro, blast some long shots, and sell him for three times his worth
Is it too wishful to want and hope for Sanchez?!
Hm, 4 mill for some quality depth to the Squad sounds better. But if he do not want to himself, then perhaps just take the 11 mill and put it towards some other quality signings. But i hope Wenger gets going soon before world cup bump prices. Also it would be Nice to get the players Ahead of preseason so they can get to gel with the team before the New season kicks off. Dont wait until deadline day. But Wenger seems preoccupied with his work for french television. When he comes back from his summer gig at the world… Read more »
C’mon, Pogba is not returning to United after he threw a hissy fit there.
Real ain’t giving us €11m, their just gonna sell us Greizmann at a priced reduced by €11m. Quite simple, Real will sell us Greizmann for cheap or we will buy Vela for cheaper. #WengerBall
To be honest, I’m not sure why it seems like a lot of people here are so keen on Greizmann and down on Vela. If you ask Real Sociedad fans who was the most important cog in their offense, the person who runs the offense, they’ll say Vela, not Greizmann.
I get that Greizmann is younger (and French) and thus has potential to improve, but 3.5 million euro for Vela would be an incredible coup in terms of depth on the wing and in the CF slot.
Sanchez would be absolute quality for us in the way we play and would provide excellent competition for Theo on the wing. We haven’t had an out and out winger since the Pires/Freddie days. Sign him up Arsene before that horrible c#%t Mourinho does
Like the spaniard who wiped his name from our history books when he signed for the chavs, the joy of winning the FA Cup will be ripped away if we fail to make a statement in the transfer market.
I would have liked Arsenal to sign him, but only because he was so cheap. So I suppose this is a deal that suits all and I certainly won’t complain.
Look at it this way; if there was no plan, cesc fabregas would be an arsenal player right now. There is an understanding within the club of where we need to strengthen and a list of targets who will make us stronger in those areas. If there was no plan, spunking £30m on a fan favourite would be an excellent way to hide it. We’re one of the 10 biggest football clubs in the world and you don’t get/stay in that position by winging it
Your faith is really really impressive. I hope you’re right.
If true, would make Vela’s cost over 15 mil(11+4.5) Would love to add two players to attack but we are only likely to buy one more, so money would better used on a higher quality addition.
joel Campbell and gnarby get their chance and 11 mill to go towards ballotelli and sanchez ans aurier.
I bet that Campbell gets loaned out again in Europe (or sold permanently) and Gnabry gets loaned to a Championship or lower-tier Premier League team.
I doubt that Barca will sell Sanchez, considering they just got a lot of money for some bloke named Francesc.
This is he best outcome for both parties clearly wenger is planning something or so I hope, we don’t wanna go in to the season hearing ” Diaby is like a new signing” and I believe in girouds ability” on an unrelated note wenger is an excellent pundit, maybe he is using that as a way of scouting players.
I’d rather Griezmann than Vela. A pacey left winger is another position that we lack. Hopefully this might be the plan, sell Vela’s rights to Sociedad and get Griezmann for a knocked down price.
Oh I get it now vela is merely a bargaining tool, in order to get griezman this makes sence his French he’s a winger and he does score a lot of goals, I don’t object to this since griezman is left winger with pace.
I dont object to us moving for Griezmann in fact i think he is the natural heir to the number 7 shirt. He’s got pace scores goals, bit slightly leas handsome then pires hell fit in perfectly.
Strange how we can find time to make money early in transfer windows but not spend it.
We may have spent it already, but we’re unlikely to get told about it until July for the Puma deal.
i’m just hoping wenger’s stopped sniffing round madrid. neither di maria nor benzema want to come but i’m a little scared he’s waiting to see if they go for suarez before he tries to signs a striker.
I like Sanchez but if we was to get that kind of player I would prefer we invested the money in Di Maria (if available). The thought of him Ozil and Ramsey is dreamy!! Saying that Sanchez and Griezman would hugely improve our squad. the only thing that frustrates me is how long is takes to conduct our business, every other team seems to buy players effortlessly but it seems such a chore for us.
By any other team you probably mean psg who are mad for paying 50m+ for luiz, chavs who just get 50m+ from some madmen, or pool who are buying players you would not want anywhere near arsenal?
Vela have been they’re best player this season, and he should have made the BBVA team of the year imo as a sub. But he apparently would prefer to stay in Spain himself, and the reason he likes it there and are doing so well probably has got alot to do with the Culture, Language and the fact he has a very central role in the team. In Arsenal he would likely just be a Squad player, and if he is not comfortable living in England, then his performance may drop aswell. So it is probably wise to take the… Read more »
After that Spain Netherlands I’m a bit less dejected about Chelsea beating us to Diego Costa and Fabregas for a combined outlay of £60m+, with us pocketing a tidy £5.5m
I’m a bit more dejected about £24m for the dutch skunk though, i was hoping he’d be getting shit by now
To be honest i had the same thought, vanpayslips produced a world class performance against a world class team and for once i cheered on him, the only time i remember him putting such a performance was the year he scored 30 league goals for us – You see why we expect so much from giroud
In fairness, he was pretty shit for Manure last season.
He’ll still be shit for the Mancs next season because he won’t have the Dutch national team setting up chances for him.
Personally after waiting 9 years for a trophy, I’m not going to get all negative and sweary just yet. Still smiling about the Cup……for another week or two anyway!!
I’m starting to hope (with no reason) that we will be in for Benzema. Real seem antsy about a new striker, Wenger has always wanted him and we passed up on Cesc. He would be the biggest forward transfer of the summer if he came, even with Costa and even should Suarez move. Costa has had one good season, Suarez has never done it against big teams, Benzema has been class since he was barely 17. I think he’ll be the one.
Good business is nice, don’t get me wrong … Fabregas and now Vela. But this was so yesterday’s imperative. The only point of having the finances is to acquire players that’ll strengthen the side. Being financially prudent won’t be worth a jot if we bungle the transfer window again.
We have the money now. Let’s sensationally spend some.
Say what you want but 15mil for “free” isn’t so bad… Though I was hoping the clause would be leveraged to buy Griezmann. I suppose this doesn’t necessarily rule that out however – we can just send it right back at them and get him for an effective price of around 15mil. Though I do honestly wonder what is better value: Vela for 3.5mil or 9mil for “free”. Vela would have been a very cheap addition to the squad – as it stands we still have to spend this money on players. We’ll see. But hey, the money that’s come… Read more »
do we really need vela???? we need a rb.cf,cdm and a gk..although just like all other transfer windows it is unlikely we the fans will get what we want( world class addition).the media will link arsenal to any player available on the market and in the wenger will bring some young talent ….. although i am pissed off at gazidis statement of “manager has to juggle a set budget”…wtf man…midseason that baldy was boasting about the new money power arsenal had with puma deal….and its the second window we have 100 mil to spend…the fact that we let fabregas go… Read more »
If a forward interests Athletico, he ought to be amazing. That’s what history has taught us. They never go wrong with forwards.
This is absolutely spot on. If Vela goes there, Atletico will be selling him to a big Spanish or Italian team for a considerable profit in two years’ time.
I’d say the opposite. No team can always have insanely good strikers, and Atletico have had it good for a long time.
I have a deep dark worrying feeling that just won’t go away. No sign of any transfers in, no Cesc, Santi wants to go back to Spain, competitors getting stronger etc etc.
Some good news please AW.
What rankles me is the *impossible to get any business done before the world cup* bollox. Erm the bwankers at Stamford Bridge have managed two very good bit’s of business already. Why can’t we be that forthright instead of fannying around. It’s not difficult … “Who would you like to buy AW” “Player A, B and C” “How are they asking for them” “X amount” “Here’s the wonga, go get em tiger” Just for once instead of the scrooge approach just pay the fucking asking price and hurrah all new players bought for start of June giving two months to… Read more »
Yay! More dough to buy Balo
said it before the world cup is going to kill our transfer plans even tho the money is there its the desire for wenger to break the mould off paying more for players than their worth. lots of big teams have bought players because of having great world cups but never worked out at club level so not doing buisness before the world cup started is a big fuck up, dont be surprised if no one big comes in. And players wanting CL will hold out till we are officially in the draw which is never a certain thing although… Read more »
Wenger’s devious but brilliant plan of hoarding more gold coins than the Dragon from The Hobbit’s is well under-way with income from both Cesc & Vela, as well as Djourou.
What a master strokevfrom Arsene. He’d make an excellently cunning Dragon.
I want to like this twice
How can so many Arsenal fans be so blase about what Wenger has done this week alone. This rant has nothing to do with Vela as i believe Wenger will buy a striker, one who is better than Vela. BUT Apparently we dont need Fabregas. ‘He will get in the way of Ramsey, Wilshere and Ozil. Get the fuck out of here with that shit. Fabregas played in shit arsenal teams with people like denilson and early song. What you should of been thinking is how much better these players would be WITH fabregas but also how much better THEY… Read more »
Just buy the players we need and shut us up, all this build up to signing players is doing my fooling head in.
Getting 11 milllion euros for watching Vela get transfered sounds like good business to me. The problem is, of course, how and when our glorious leader will spend this windfall. Like I’ve said a few times before, I’ve got absolutely zero confidence in Arsene Wenger. I know precisely what’s coming this summer: our vacilating, procrastinating stubborn old fool of a manager will spend all of this month and next weighing up his options…before finally purchasing two or three sub-standard players who will be just about enough to get us fourth next season. Don’t expect Wenger or the club to think… Read more »
ok
I’m really fucking annoyed about Fabregas. We should have brought him back just to stop him going to those cunts. The thought of seeing him in that muggy blue shirt makes me want to quit eatching football altogether. Sagna to City too. Eeurgh!! Another point that comes to mind reading some of your comments about the dutch skunk, why did we let him go for such a low price? People talk about doing good business but he was the best striker in the prem the season before and we should of got at least 35 – 40 mil for him… Read more »
