Alexis Sanchez is officially a Gooner after Arsenal confirmed the signing of the Chilean striker from Barcelona.
The fee for the 25-year-old is thought to in the region of £30 million, a figure that represents the second biggest deal in the club’s history after last summer’s acquisition of Mesut Ozil, and he’s expected to earn around £150,000 a week.
Sanchez arrives at the Emirates with a wealth of experience at the top level. He’s earned over 70 caps for his country, won league titles in his homeland with Colo-Colo, in Argentina with River Plate and La Liga with Barcelona. He also spent three years on the books at Serie A side Udinese with whom he impressed ahead of his big money move to Camp Nou in 2011.
Last season Sanchez netted 19 goals and made 10 assists in 34 La Liga appearances as Tata Martino’s side finished runners-up behind Atletico Madrid. He also bagged himself a couple of goals at the World Cup where he caught the eye leading the line for Chile before their quarter-final exit on penalties against Brazil.
Obviously excited at having bagged such a prestige signing, Arsene Wenger said of Sanchez:
“Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him joining up with us in a few weeks.
“He has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now and we are all excited to see him integrate into the Arsenal squad. I’m sure all Arsenal supporters will join me in welcoming Alexis to our club.”
The player also had warm words for his new club stating:
“I’m so happy to be joining Arsenal, a club which has a great manager, a fantastic squad of players, huge support around the world and a great stadium in London.
“I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and to be playing for Arsenal in the Premier League and Champions League. I will give my best to Arsenal and want to make all the supporters happy.”
Sanchez will now have a bit of a break before he joins his new teammates for pre-season training, and is expected to make his debut in the Emirates Cup, which takes place at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3.

There’s been a lot of talk about Yaya Toure being unhappy at man city. If we could snatch him up, welcome to another invincible season.
Yaya plays best at CM as he did this year. He is also 31. Although his skills may not run out soon, his pace will and we’ll have an Arteta problem again. Same reason we won’t bid for someone like Masherano who some people are calling for as he has been one of the best CDMs in the WC so far.
Both are 2 great players, but a younger option and someone whose primarily position is CDM will be better.

Don’t get me wrong, I wholeheartedly agree that finances and long term planning are involved. In fact, time and again I’ve used the stadium argument why Arsenal shouldn’t be vilified as a sellers club nor Wenger as someone without a vision. I agree, that plan is heading towards its last phase. With the FA Cup, and the signings of Ozil and Sanchez as prime examples why spending money occurred cautiously.
