Gibbs praise for Ox in the box

Kieran Gibbs has praised Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for working on his finishing but believes the England international needs a run of games to show his full potential.

The Ox netted Arsenal’s equaliser against Sp*rs to open his account for the season – only his 10th goal in total for the club – as the Gunners laboured to their fourth draw of the season.

Speaking after the game to Arsenal.com, Gibbs played up his teammate’s potential: “Alex is a fantastic player and he just needs games.

“He’s showing what he can do now and his end product is what he wanted to work on. Now it’s time we see it and the results are paying off for him. He’s a good professional and an amazing talent.”

Admitting that he’s not been nearly clinical enough in front of goal, Chamberlain said he’s been working hard to improve his own scoring record.

“I’d like to [score more but] it’s easier said than done. I told my dad before the game that the law of average said I’d missed enough chances so surely it was time to score.

“I’m really happy to get off the mark but I completely agree with you – it’s something I want to improve on. It’s something I feel I have the potential to do better so I’ll be working on that but it’s important that I do my other role in the team too defensively and trying to create for others.

“It’s nice to get a goal today and it’s contributed to a good point but I will be trying to get more.”

On the game itself, the Ox continued: “Being 1-0 down in the Spurs derby is always a bit nerve-wracking because you never want to lose the game but I felt we did well to come back. Once we made it 1-1, I really did think we could push on and get the winner.

“We knew first and foremost that we had to compete with them because in derbies, sometimes it’s not [who] plays the best football, it’s who wants to win them more.

“I think that was the case in the first half but we came out in the second half and maybe the nerves had settled down a bit. We started to pass the ball better and got into the game a bit more.”

Sometimes I wonder what another manager would achieve with this team. I believe we have a team that is capable of playing much better than what they are doing at the moment. How much of that is down to the manager is subject to debate. Wouldn’t a coach like Simeone, Guadiola, Mourinho, Sir Alex – more flexible managers – mould these boys into a more cohesive unit? Sometimes I have a nagging feeling that Arsene, with all his good intentions, may be holding this team back from her true potential. A change of guard is not as dreadful an eventuality… Read more »
