Sunderland 0-2 Arsenal: player ratings

Well, it wasn’t the kind of performance that settled any nerves but in the end it was three points, a clean sheet and another fantastic display from Alexis.

Here’s how we felt the players rated – remember to add your own ratings and comments below.

I’d like to give Szczesny an extra point for not being Mannone. Poor lad.

WineArse

Absolutely, laugh at Mannone but look at the gear Alexis finds — in the 92nd minute — to pressure him. http://arsenalist.com/f/2014-15/sunderland-vs-arsenal/goal-2-0-alexis-sanchez-capitalizes-on-mannone-error.html

Erwandy

I’d give at least a 9 for Wenger’s ZIPPABBLE new coat. Well done PUMA!!!

RoyaleWithCheese

I don’t think Vito deserves to take most of the blame for that, even though he could have just cleared it. But what was the defender thinking playing a short blind pass like that? I would be pissed off too.

Rufus

well with three points we picked up today and with Man city losing, can’t complain much.

GunnerDareMacedonia

And loserpoll drawing, and tomorrow a draw between the utd-cheashit would make a perfect weekend, i would love murinho to lose tomorrow to break there confidence and run but I don’t see it happen and I would’t like utd win to get confidence because they are playing us in two weeks, but anyway we need to close the gap on chelshit so no win for them would be good.

GunnerDareMacedonia

why thumb down? you wanted liverpool to win today ? or you want chelsea to win tomorrow ? or you are a troll ?

Gargoyle

United to win tomorrow and then to go on losing 5 in a row.

Gunner From Another Mother

My guess would be you’ve been thumbed down because of your use of “loserpool” and “chelshit”

It all seems a bit immature and petty. That’s my opinion anyway.

Although at the same time, our favorite thing to say around here is “John Terry is a cunt” (which is true) so what do I know.

P.S. John Terry is a cunt.

Primislas

Meh, let Chelski thrash MU. I know that would make my day. Why should I care about Chelsea not winning? Arsenal aren’t in the title race anyways.

iamgunner-lilwayne

This is why some people will never enjoy being arsenal fans. If city won 3 0 convincingly then it was wenger out parade time. I bet some people wana moan that we only beat them 2 0 while soto put 8 past them. Lets focus on us and enjoy us.

spinner

Alexis deserves more than 9 !!!

Maniac

And Monreal deserves more than 6. Dispensed everything that Sunderland threw at us and was there to back up Per 100% of the time. Switched over to left back and very nearly notched himself an assist. An unsung hero from today’s game to be honest.

Baz

Great shout. Monreal gets way too much stick. Some people make him seem like little more than a park player. He was excellent today.

Samgunz

Totally agree, very important in us getting a long awaited clean sheet, solid Nacho.

Andy Mack

I agree. Nacho is a good defender and a good attacker. What lets him down is that he’s not really quick enough to do both at the same time, so he has a habit of committing too quickly as he’s rushing back (Gibbs is much quicker but also dives in a bit to much at times). Playing at CB suits his defensive capabilities well.

maddolove

Hail Alexis
You make your own luck with hard work and being tenacious

Mark

I just wish the rest of the team played with the effort that Sanchez does once we turn the ball over instead of sauntering around. That is how Barcelona were at their best, win the ball back immediately after turning it over and it prevents teams from easily the getting the ball out of their half.

Rambozil

Sanchez. Gah Damn what a bargain.

Sinan

Manone will get better. So will we. Keep the faith.

MERTESCIELNY

Cazorla and Chambo have been shit this season yet Wenger persists with them over Rosicky, Campbell and Poldi. I don’t understand why.

Lili

Rosicky’s old, Campbell’s really not that good and very inexperienced, and Podolski’s terrible save when he’s in front of goal. Play him and he might score, at the risk of giving away the ball and terrible defending down the left-hand side.

killthecockerel

Carl Jenko is so pleased to be playing for a footballing team away from this mess.

SJ1986

To be honest…aside from Alexis, no-one has shown. AOC is very young still, and so ‘shit’ is a bit harsh. Agree though that if we have depth there, we need to mix it up. Bring Joel in vs Burnley. Rambo in for Flam.

MERTESCIELNY

Fair enough, I don’t mean shit as in they are shit players (clearly Ox has huge potential and Santi has shown how good he can be in seasons past), i’ve just been very disappointed with the continuing passes that go out for throws, crosses that go for goalkicks, shots that hit row z and so forth from these two. And i’m disappointed that despite this undeniable poor show Wenger hasn’t even given TR7, Joel or Poldi a chance yet. If those two chances to santi today fell to either podolski or campbell, i would have no doubt that they would… Read more »

GunnerDareMacedonia

I think santi play his best games when ozil is on the pitch, and ozil gets a bashing santi gets a prise, because he makes space for santi to express himself, today santi had many touches of the ball in 16 yard but could’t do nothing there were no openings to pass or to find player to assist he tried with a couple of shots which one came close, in other times he passed to wide areas to gibbs or chambo because he had no options in front of him. Welbz is mobile forward and he likes to get out… Read more »

Ltwo

I thought you were talking about Chambers for a while there. Anyway, AOC needs to improve on his choices in the final third. He is getting into some very dangerous positions but lacks the final product (e.g. dribble then shoot a la Alexis or a splitting pass). At least he’s hardworking. He almost did a Bale today when he ran off the pitch going forward.

this aint FIFA bitches

Was an awful performance but luckily Sunderland are a terrible team.

Hopefully the team can click soon as going forward we have regressed from last season.

Racerr

Wonder where we would be without Alexis. He’s one of the best in the world right now and largely underrated in my opinion. Hope we can hold on to him for long.

riku

What is up with oxo playing so bad recently. Tein field in the middle. . team needed width. Campbell should have come on. Oxos touch and decisions poor. Good that theos back. Defences played well. Schzney worrying but good shot stopping. Oh for a selfish ruthless forward like henry or wright they have scored hat trick easy today. Sanchez awesome.

righققق

I like the 3 points but I hate the game played… but Sanchez is excused… should have played rosicky and podolski

cdbgooner

File this one away under the heading of a win is a win, 3 points is what we need. A fair amount better than mid week but no where near even good – shows just how bad we were. Im doing my best to keep faith. As long as alexis is out there it still makes me excited to watch. Have we had a match this year that was outstanding in the league? Not really. We had a nice three minute spell against villa but they capitulated in the second

Loke

I would turn down every rating by 2 points just because Sunderland was utter shait and frankly made us look better than we really were. A Sunderland on form would probably have won against a Arsenal side as horrible as this. But as it is, Sunderland are currently as shait as they have ever been as we saw last week aswell with Southampton absolutely thrashing them, and they were not much better today imo. Only we are nowhere near as good as Southampton right now. Lets just hope our opponents dont figure out that all they need to do to… Read more »

You must be fun at parties.

AllGunsABlazin

Barcelona currently playing like they miss the shit out of Alexis.

He’s ours now bitches!

Samgunz

they could be missing cesc as well

Iceman

From what I saw of the match, I think Santi needs to be benched for some of the upcoming matches. He is not in great form right now. But knowing Arsene, I doubt he will. Its a shame to see a player like Rosicky being marginalized by Arsene. He really brings something that is currently missing from our play. Our play is lacklustre at best. Why not bring Tomas back into the side? Sure he is not the most tippy tappy passy player we have but his energy is being really missed.

alexis' shorts

I agree and said the same in another article about Cazorla and Rosicky. I was surprised to hear that the Ox has been involved in every game for us this year. Albeit mostly from the bench but it looks like Wenger wants him to gain every bit of experience because he really can develop into a top class player with the physical ability and skill he has (hopefully he learns how to place a pass soon). But recalling a younger Theo, all he had was pace, with barely any technique or finishing to boot, but now we all know how… Read more »

Sanchez’s reaction after his second goal: ‘It’s that easy, guys!’

ach

Just finished watching El Classico. Why can’t we play like Madrid instead of passing pointlessly ? The invincible used to play like that, fast and precise.

Maddolove

We havent got an invincible team to play the way you ask
To play that way, players like Santi, Ox etc need to play the pass and move game
We also need a very strong and athletic DM
But most importantly, we need very clever players who wants to win and are a Band of Brothers

Something is missing, and one or two are not willing
But if Arsene buys the players ( two only) we will repeat that era.

GunnerDareMacedonia

Because teams that are playing us are behind the ball and in own half for almost 90 minutes, like hull last week and today sunderland in the first-half, but yes you are not wrong we had openings to counter in second half and we blew them, i think with walcott coming in to the team and with alexis in form we will see some great counter attacking goals i’m sure of it, our midfield just need to find form. to poor displays out of the why with 6 points won, now if that is not going to bring confidence whit… Read more »

loose_cannon

Was watching old videos of Pires and Bergkamp the other day and the difference in style from then to now is stunning. Don’t understand why we’re so static now and everyone wants the ball to feet while they’re standing still and easily marked. Yeah it’s important to work the ball when you’re up against a parked bus but without penetration and making space for each other you’ll never score.

ijebu father

arsenal, making mediocre teams look like good teams

Danskin

All hail Alexis the Sánchez. What a marvellous footballer.

Gareth Murray

How awful would we be without Alexis?

Rambos mate

Terrible performance but still 2 wins i an week all hail king Sanchez is this Man Our augero ?

assistantref

He’s better, in his own way. Aguero is a fabulous striker but he doesn’t win games on his own the way Alexis is doing for us right now.

Dylan

LOl disregarding the 4 goals he scored against spuds..

MT

Yes the Pole made one dumb mistake but overall a solid performance from him. I know when he is in goal I am calm because I know that he will save what he has to. He had two good saves and one of it was a similar header which in Wednesday had landed in goal. And also Szczesny doesn’t make “Vito” mistakes but he does different kind because of over confidence. If he fix that he can truly be one of the best. If I concentrate only on the game it was another bad one. But we won! We lacked… Read more »

Ramsey was brought on at 87 minutes and managed a chance that Cazorla should have scored form, surely you can’t be mad at a player who has that sort of input being on the field for less than 10 minutes in a game.

Mark

Yet another short stretch of games by Gibbs before he is injured again. This time it’s a “hip” that will surely start off as a few weeks, but end up being much longer and then lead to other “muscular” things as he compensates for it when he returns too early.

Bob A

Why oh why do we get a throw in 10metres inside the opponents half and then throw it backwards finishing up with goalkeeper , have they not learnt the first lesson that you only score going forwards, Nowbefore to many people moan at me I know other teams do it. BUT IT DRIVES ME MAD
Well done anyway at least we won and kept a clean sheet and well done to AW signing up Alexis I think he as been brilliant when the rest of the team were at best average.

morefiah

I wonder how City would do without Aguero…or where Chelski would be without Costa…..Madrid without CR7…Barca without Messi…etc etc etc. This idea that we shohld knock the team for depending on the one player who is on form is just bullshit. THAT is exactly why we bought him!!! To do EXACTLY what he is doing. He is awesome….and he is ours…and he is doing his job….so stop talking about where we would be without Alexis….lets just applaud the fact we have him….he is repaying our faith and enthusiasm and best of all, we have only more of him to look… Read more »

Was a great classico though wasn’t it? Ref actually has bottle and not give in to the players’ theatrics as is the case on most other classicos. And Ancellotti again doing what Mou can’t, yet going by the English media you’d think Mou is miles ahead of Ancellotti. It’s also interesting how Madrid doesn’t line up with a CDM per se but they managed to contain Barca very well with Modric and Kroos. Which really does but the tough tackling CDM argument to shame. I honestly think that’s what Arteta brings to our team, he steadies the ship and reads… Read more »

gunnermite

thanks to united for producing classy players like wes brown. Ànd Vitto? i guess once à gunner always à gunner.

Mike

Sanchez has been our player of season so far by a country mile .

Notice the lovely finish for first goal . Gave keeper the eye for the other corner . Great finish .
He works incredibly hard for the team.

We all need to press like that .

Good to keep a clean sheet .

Two good results in a row , just need to work on the overall performance , midweek was bad , today was a little better .
Need to find our groove

Mike

Don vito with a howler ..
Mind you with Sanchez bearing down on me Id shit myself too .

Comedy gold.

What we really need at the moment is to stuff a team . I mean well and truly kick thier ass .
At home
Give everyone a lift ..

V burnley next maybe ??

A nice 5-0 would do wonders for our confidence .

We’ve gotta get a good run going and kickstart our season

Ruelando

Thanks for 3 points sunderland and we were not too harass, yes we did not play good, yes we scored because of errors by sunderland, and sanchez is our saviour again. but let me ask you this would you prefer we played great and no points, are not most goals errors by someone along the way and sanchez scoring goals i thought that is why we bought him. Its obvious we are not playing good and we are upset, because we know we are better than that, hopefully we will get better , but my major concern is how tired… Read more »

Does anyone know any more about gibb’s injury? Seems a bit quiet?

AFC_SYD

According to Arsene its his hip but didn’t go into details.

Ancient Gooner

Imagine when we actually start playing football! In the mean time: Focus on defence and thank the gods (inc. Arsene :-)) for Alexis.

monkey knees

With Alexis in this form, we miss Ozil and his vision/passing.

Gooneralex

Is it just me that cannot wait to see a front four of:

Welbeck
Oxlade-Chamberlain – Sanchez – Walcott

The pace there is just unbearable

Gnarrrrrr

Surely Wes Brown deserves some applause?

Roderick

@Gooneralex: I couln’t agree more with you:

Front 4 from left to right: Chamberlain + Welbeck + Sanchez + Walcott

Giroud's 6Pack

And this is why I harp on about the importance of Ozil and Giroud. Watching Arsenal these days is like watching me play Fifa, amazing around the halfway line and woeful in the final third.

Nijjy

One of those games where it feels like a defeat in terms of performance, but 3 points in the bag was vital. As for individual performances, Alexis was the man again. The way he runs around like mad for 90 mins is unbelievable, I know the media is talking about the impact of fabregas and Costa and branding them buys of the season, but Alexis has been immense for arsenal specially when 8 to 9 first team players are missing. What’s the deal with the ox and cazorla? What a first season cazorla had, but it.s been too many downs… Read more »

Conchetumadre

Alexis, please keep helping Arsenal the way tou have been doing every week. Thank you for being a gunner.

Michael Farmer

Well done Alexis. He was inspiring yesterdayRambo did some excellent running and passing when he got on and looked to complement Alexis’ good work.Monreal played a solid game in defence.Chambers continues to have composure and looks comfortable on the ball..Gratitude also for the friendliness and welcome to Arsenal supporters in Sunderland. We stayed here for the weekend, went for a walk along the beaches at Roker and Seaburn pre match and post match.Great fish and chips at Minchella’s pre match and a lovely curry on the seafront at Seaburn after the game.Hope Sunderland get going soon and stay in the Prem.

riku

Oxo was eorse than santi. At least santi dared shot and took responsibly even if his radar off

Arsene Arsenal

Shoot! Shoot! Shoot!!!
