Cazorla: We needed to win for our confidence

Santi Cazorla played up the importance of Arsenal’s hard-fought 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion claiming the victory will help restore confidence to the Gunners camp.

The Spaniard produced a sparkling display and brilliant assist for Danny Welbeck as he took the game by the scruff of the neck in a manner reminiscent of his first season at the Emirates.

Speaking to BT Sport after his man of the match performance the Spanish international said:

“It was an important game for us. We needed to win because we’ve lost the last two games and for the confidence. For the team it was important today and we played really well.

“When I play with him [Danny Welbeck] it’s good. It was a good performance from the team and we need to continue to play the same as today.

“It’s always dangerous when they [opponents] play long balls, second balls. They have tall players and we defended strongly and together.

Match-winner Welbeck, looking back on his seventh goal of the season, added : “You see Santi picking up the ball in the wide left and obviously he got past the defender with great skill and once he got to the byline, I knew roughly what area he was going to put it in and I made my run. Luckily I timed it well.

“The clean sheet is very important. We always believe in ourselves to score goals. If we kept the clean sheet we win the game. It was a vital three points for us today.

“It’s only one game [in the league] at the moment. The most important thing is to take it one game at a time and we have to prepare correctly for every single match. Going into it we really want to get the three points.

“The manager has a lot of options going forward, there were players not on the pitch today, who can do the same job as us. Once we get on the pitch we all want to give 100% for Arsenal.”

Well played Santi

David

i feel he is untouchable in our starting 11 at the moment. Long may it continue.

Big mid-week game against a Southampton side that were pretty poor against Man City.

COYG!!!

Petit's Handbag

Brilliant, brilliant play to set that up.
all the criticism he’s faced this season, let’s not forget, the guys a genius

Man Manny

You led by example…keep it up.

Henry! Chance!! Goal!!!

3 points in the bag. Let’s kick on from here

Ooh Santi Cazorla

East Gooner

Great to see Cazorla play himself into some form – 3 great assists in 2 games.
And is it just me or is Ramsey playing much better too…

Perry S.

definitely just you re: ramsey. he was horrific today. his form is completely shot. wenger is right, he needs to stop trying to score so much and concentrate on the little things. we need him as a strong presence in the middle of the park now more than ever.

Dick Swiveller

It’s not just him.

I noticed all the little things he did well, so he must be doing them, right?

I’d say it was the big things he was doing badly, but the layoffs, the pressing, and the work in helping to fill gaps were things he did well.

Humphre3000

Oooh Santi Cazorla

Me So Hornsey

Giroud has got to be one of the most unsung, unsung heroes around.

He’s like the oil in the car engine, you take it for granted it but it sure makes a difference.

Perry S.

I’ve been saying that since he went down with injury. my exact quote, “it’s no coincidence that our attack lacks fluidity without giroud.” he does all the little things others don’t, and the way he holds that ball up, it’s critical to the way we play.

FRANCIS

Welcome back kocielny….and Santi a dozen of roses

GU1TAR-D3MON

We all needed that win today! Bar the wasteful finishing and the standard heart on your throat last 10 minutes, thought we were pretty decent and smart. Although West Brom invited us to go all out attack, we didn’t attack recklessly. Looks like some words were said it’s paying dividends, 2 clean sheets in a row! Great to see Kos back as well… And a word for Santi, looks like someone took a time machine and grabbed the Santi from his first season with us, but forgot to tell him to bring his shooting boots! He was brilliant today, his… Read more »

Santi great game keep it Up

monkey knees

Santi looks dangerous again. Always a good thing.

SHAME some of the fans out there today. Wenger Out Brigade out on force. PLnety of rubbish about how Welbeck doesn’t score or how Santi is useless. Just typical shallow thought. Bollocks about Ox being rested. If Wenger played him, they’d say Wenger doesn’t do enough rotation and knackers the players out. More bollocks about how Wenger should not have Welbeck out left. He played almost a 4-4-2 with Welbeck joining the middle. Same fans have you that Wenger is inflexible and doesn’t change his tactics. Utter nonsense. Santi was the best player against Dortmund with 2 ASSISTS and he’s… Read more »

On Poldi, it’s the natural optimism of the fans that convinces you that whoever isn’t there would be masterful and win us the league, it’s why there’s so many ‘we must buy X player’ too.

Perry S.

spot on!

MPLS

That’s the glass half full, hope it’s true. The other version is the cultural negativism of a portion of supporters who assume for any circumstance that Wenger is doing something wrong and player selection is the easy to sell reason. Same goes for transfers.

Eg: “Why the $&@:/ did we sell Vermaelen?!”

Elfabuloso05

I keep hearing Santi can’t score in a puma shirt. I quite remember Santi scoring against shitty in the community shield…
Seems to me like you also have a personal vendetta against klopp… Come on, that guy is charming.

bobo

I really like Danny, he seems such a humble guy.

Ben

Definitely!
I honestly think the whole squad is built of cool people. So thank you Arsene for that.
I’m proud not to have to support the likes of Sh*wcross.
The day we become a city or a chelsea is the day I’m off.

rch

Simple just play him in the middle instead of stuck out on the left.
One of the most natural two footed players around allowed to spread play left and right today.
I dont like seeing anyone getting injured but would he have played there the last two games if Wiltshire been fit i wonder

Bendtdogg's Pizza

Glad Santi wore his shooting boots today. Peppering the keeper from distance adds so much to out intricate game. It make compact defenses press up, and then we can exploit the space. Also, super to see him celebrate, arms akimbo, like “that’s right, muthafuckas! arsenal!”

palace gunner

Good win nice to see kosc and giroud back abit of match fitness but santi and co on a rush haha coyg welbeck

ger

Santi motm again.
Pinging crossfield balls to the feet of a team mate……………..

He is totally Back with us!!
