Danny Welbeck says he’s eager to get more goals after netting the winner against West Ham United.
The England international’s tap in was his seventh goal in 20 appearances since moving from Manchester United on transfer deadline day, however, the 24-year-old admits he’s looking to improve in the box after wasting other chances.
Speaking after the 2-1 victory at Upton Park, Welbz noted that the Gunners should have taken at least one of the several chances they created in the second half.
“I think we had a couple of opportunities [to seal the win],” he told Arsenal Player.
“I had one and a couple of the other players had opportunities to finish the game off earlier, so we’re a bit disappointed with that. But the main thing is that we got the three points.
“I was pleased to get the goal and I’m looking to score many more goals. If I get the opportunity, I’ll try to put them in the back of the net, so I’m a bit disappointed with the one in the second half as well.
“It was a very important game for us going into the Christmas period and we’re delighted to come out with three points.”
Elsewhere Francis Coquelin says he’s enjoying his return to the Arsenal fold having impressed in his first Premier League start for the club since the final day of the 2011/12 season.
Recalled from a short loan at Charlton – his third spell away from the Emirates in four years – due to the Gunners proliferation of dead/maimed/injured midfielders, Coquelin earned plaudits for his work alongside compatriot Mathieu Flamini.
“It’s been a long time for me without [starting] in the Premier League,” he noted.
“I think the loan at Charlton was very good for me and helped me a lot. I got a lot of games under my belt, and I’d like to thank Charlton for that.
“Now I’m back here and I tried to give 100 per cent to help the team. We won [against West Ham], so it was a good performance.
“I’m happy to be here and to get minutes. Today was my first start and we got a win, so now we’ll just move on to the next one and see what happens.”
Arseblog News can’t be the only ones to notice that our Coq has filled out a little in the last couple of years. He cut a much more physical presence in the face of West Ham’s midfield yesterday, he didn’t wilt under pressure and his ball play was impressively penetrating. Good on him.
Hope the coq gets a run in the next game and doesn’t get shafted by Wenger!
I suggest, you all go get play time for your own stuff. Your time will be better used than the relentless coq jokes. The guy’s name is Coquelin if you haven’t noticed. I just cannot imagine this forum if Francis remains at Arsenal.
andrew hinting we have a fat coq?
The day cock/Coq jokes stop being funny is the day that the last vestiges of joy within me fall away for good and I have nothing left to look forward to but the inevitable aneurysm that will finish me off on my 59th birthday, like the gypsy woman said.
Yeah I agree, all I read about on here is Coq this, Coq that. I wish the writer would stop trying to shoehorn Wenger’s Coq into everything!
it feels good, when coq comes good
Hope to see a more firmer Coq next week..What a good performance from him and the lads…
Ridiculous. How can anyone find these “jokes” funny? Everyone on here 15yrs old?
*coqy response*
Coquelin has a rounded edge to his game.
*Insert Coq jokes here”
Heh. Insert.
Lmao, really good one. I wonder if you people just can’t find something to not complain about. Its just banter. And PS: the more you compain about the jokes, the more creative people will get with them. So quit your whining and let us all flash our Coqs.
Agreed. It’s like some of the killjoys on here just aren’t happy unless they have something to complain about.
Ive been singing his praises for years when noone gave him a real chance at breaking into the team. The good positional sense hard tackling and measured range of distribution is now complimented by the virtues of a stronger physique. Coquelin alongside wilshere for me in front of the back four when fit.
You’re obviously better at judging / assessing coq than most people
Coq kept our defence very erect during the game
Thats trying too hard on the coq jokes
Was pleased to see the Coq was strong in the challenges. I’m sure they’ll be a few West Ham players grimacing as they sit down.
Nice to see Arsene’s Coq rising to the occasion.
I don’t think coq ever really looked out of his depth playing for us. Was surprised when a move looked on the cards for him in the first place. good little player.
I think it helped flamini had a good grip on arsenes coq and kept talking to his coq to keep it going.
I’m so happy for Coq!!! I said earlier that he had a big, big chance to prove himself to Wenger. He did really, really well and Wenger will definitely give him more chances from now on. It will be good for Wenger to try a Coq-Ramsey combo sometime later, if Coq could improve his distribution further I think he can start over both Flamini and Arteta. Coq has the energy and physique that Flam and Arteta don’t (maybe due to age). We really should give him a run of maybe 4-5 games, and if he performs well I don’t see… Read more »
The Coq was solid yesterday, he showed balls too…
If we suffer any more midfield injuries, I wonder if we’ll see Coq in the hole?
We always have holes to put our Cow into
Wenger will surely stick the Coq in the hole but I’m certain that he’ll come out good and hardened with experience
I posted a message before the game to go with 4231 with two holding midfielders to shore up the defence specially for away games. It has worked wonders yesterday. I think Wenger should follow that formation in most away games. Our top 4 can do enough damage specially on counters.
Alright wenger calm down lol
I’m sure he must have been listening to you, and decided at the last minute to ditch his originally planned 1-3-2-1-3 formation.
I dont know, I thought the coqa balls were a bit hairy yesterday. There was to much weight on his balls. He needs to unload a but sooner I think.
It seems we are we all so excited about our Coq when it performs.
I used to think our coq is a bit short standing at only 1.78m, so I’m really pleased to see how high he went for those aerial duels.
Yes I remember there was one time he outjumped this west ham player a head taller than him to win a header. But 1.78m isn’t short, from where I come from 1.78m is considered tall
Coq does seem to have built up a bit of girth in recent years.
Who can’t be happier with a bigger Coq?
There’s too many people trying to take credit for Arsene’s coq
Quick question to my fellow Arsenal supporters, are you content with Welbeck leading the line? I mean dont get me wrong I love his work rate and doggedness in getting the ball back but is he good enough to score goals at Arsenal? Mid season now and Im not convinced.
In an article about Welbeck and Coq, you’re the first to mention the former. Good job sir.
Not all of us are infatuated with coq
As a striker, the one thing that people will judge you on is your ability to put balls in the back of the net. His work rate, tenacity, willingness to run are all great, but his goal:games ratio is terrible. He lacks composure and confidence needed for a striker with the ball at his feet. It’s almost as if he hates the responsibility of having it. I like him as a player, but if we ever want to seriously challenge for anything again, someone else much better needs to be our regular #9.
Welbeck led the line pretty well yesterday. I do have confidence in him. His finishing will improve, and so will his combination play. He’s showing the energy and will to disrupt the opponent’s back line and track back on defense, which is a huge positive. There are some opponents he could give more problems for than Giroud does. It’s fantastic to have him as an option up front, whether in the middle, as part of a striker pair, or wide. Alexis will have to sit sometime.
At the moment, yes. These next two games without Olivier are his chance to really stake a claim. His workrate and movement are top class. At the moment, his finishing admittedly leaves a bit to be desired and needs to improve, but I think much of that comes down to confidence and composure. It’s very similar to the 2012-2013 version of Ramsey. Ramsey often put himself in excellent positions, only to muck up the final product because his composure was wanting (I believe Ramsey admitted as such). He then made a conscious effort to work on his composure in training,… Read more »
Said it in the other article and i got thumbed down.
We can play all the prettiest football all we want, but its pointless if we keep missing chances the way we do.
We have 2 strikers who are average finishers at best, our best finisher doesn’t fit in wenger’s plans, and theo is out injured.
Say what you want, van gaal was right about welbeck…his numbers don’t look great at all.
I find the idea anything is questionable with Danny Welbeck one of the more dubious things discussed. Welbeck was always going to be third choice in attack behind Giroud and Sanchez. The consensus on the forums was if he could supply 15 goals a season he would have been a great buy. He’s at 7 at the half way point (+5 for country). The Man U fan perspective is more grounded. If some fans were fine he was sold, the majority were not. The insult to injury was he was sold for 16M. Luke Shaw cost 31M, Adam Lallana 25M… Read more »
But he is not leading the line in every game is he?
A good Coq can be a real pain in the arse for opponents.
If he continues to perform as he did against West Ham, a lot of teams will be jealous of our Coq.
That Coq is good.
So Blogs is saying that our coq has gotten thicker? Much jelqing must have been done for awhile now
Whilst many were beginning to have a moan about Welbeck, I had the feeling he would profit from being deployed more centrally. Hope he continues to knock em in for us. One swallow does not a summer make but Coq is proof that our DM position is not as light as it seems to the facile media. Sure we have to deal with an aging Arteta sooner than later but Flamini has been unsung at the moment doing the business for us with improved passing and a number of timely intercepts, usual barking of orders like a sergeant manager to… Read more »
Coq is still developing quite firmly . He may still be premature and shaky at times but he lasted longer than I thought and fought hard for balls. Coq was a hard worker in the back and provided sudden in and out movements to get back, then got a bit excited to go up and fill the hole with our forwards..but nice job.
He is definitely an option.
I enjoy reading the discussions after an article unless it’s about Coquelin as you get one proper comment in about 15 due to all the lame, done before or extremely tenuous Coq/cock jokes.
Coq blocker.
It was like we have 11 coq on the field!
And one Cock called Swarbrick….. Oh and some cunts called WHU.
Look, be realistic, everyone we could go for is inflated. Arsene and the staff know how football works, evidence is in our top 4 finishes despite financing a stadium, losing top players, and facing the challenges of challengers with unlimited funds. Point 3 is connected to point 2 too. So anyway, the players we bring in are all potentially mustard. All of them have a quality which will add to the team if they live up to potential. The x factor which kills off that balance and potential is our injury challenge and the fact that every team has improved doesn’t… Read more »
Didn’t know where to post this — but there is talk of Newcastle selling Moussa Sissoko in Jan (now with Pardew leaving). He can play the holding role quite well. Good signing for Arsenal? With Flamini on the wrong end of 30, what about it?
i’ve rated him for a while now and would definitely be happy to see it happen, but it seems rare that wenger goes for the ‘obvious’ option……. i would love to see us have a tall, imposing player in the middle of the park.
We are stiffer opposition with coq in the side
