Arsene Wenger has money and he’s ready to spend it. That’s his take on things after a little look in the Arsenal vault ahead of the January transfer window.
The Gunners are fully expected to make signings in the New Year with a defender at the top of the shopping list and the Frenchman insists that he’ll get the cheque book out if he finds a suitable candidate.
Speaking to press on Friday ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Anfield, Wenger refuted the notion that he is shy to spend cash.
“I’ve said that many times, without any doubt: if we find the right player we will do [a deal].
“There’s a huge difference between the perception that people have of me: I’m not scared to spend money.
“It was periods where we had not the money. What I don’t like is to spend the money I haven’t got. What I fought against is to spend money that would put the future of the club in danger. Now I have money. No problem at all.”
Like a lottery winner who blows cash on a Rolls Royce (or three) rather than fixing our studio flat’s faulty boiler we’re still getting used to the idea of not being skint. I think with winter here Arsene has realised that we may need some heating.
This is an awful analogy. Let’s stop this and instead leave you with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. For some reason this came to mind when reading Arsene’s quotes.
He almost signed Messi, Ibrahimovic, Yaya Tours, Christians Ronaldo (add yours to the List), he definitely knows how to spend.
Salomon Kalou?
Morning all, here’s to smashing some mugs today!!!
We need to buy Chris Samba and Scott Dann!
Yep. Sarcasm over.
dont forget scot parker and nigel reo coker
Fabian Delph: the modern day Nigel Reo-Coker.
We need Gonzalo!
Yes, we need Gonzalo Rice-Cooker
Don’t forget M’Villa
bring on the scousers! early beer for me I think 😉
I’m off out later for a Christmas drink with some other expats who are mostly musgmashers (there’s not much else to do in Germany) so three points will put a smile on my face and do away with the sarky comments. COYG 3 points as an early Xmas present for yours truly and the world’s a wonderful place. I’ll have a few beers and gently stagger home feeling the Christmas spirit and goodwill to all men and women (except maureen and na$ri et al of course)
Well, I definitely did not expect the sole recreational activity in Germany to be smashing mugs. Try walking around your neighbourhood, I’m sure you’ll discover “much else to do” in your free time 😉
Sébastien Frey would really do it for me.
Just saw the rumors today! That would be a great buy :p
We need Yann M’Vila guys.
Guys?
No “dry powders” statement yet? Starting to worry…
Still cant believe he let Fellani get away
Comment:Really dnt see liverpool beating USernal t’day.
Really think Lorik Cana could save our season
He gives the added benefit of automatically ‘rotating’ himself just by getting red cards!!!!!!
I wonder how difficult it will be to sign a first-team calibre player in January whether it be a CD or defensive midfielder. It always seems to me that in January (unless you are willing to spend an inordinate amount of money) your best chances of signing a decent player is either a youngster with some promise of being a first team player in the future, or someone decidedly average who will spend 90% of his time on the bench unless their is a significant injury to a first team player. Which truly world class defenders look like they might… Read more »
Why weren’t they signed in the summer then?
Availability??
As you say, it’s more difficult but decent players do sometimes become available. I don’t know who and I’m certainly not dumb enough to believe the newspapers, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens. But if a team is doing ‘OK’ domestically but bombed out of Europe and now has income issues then the club may be interested. Or FFP alone could be a ‘driver’ for some.
YAG
He’s right. He cares about the club more than any one. Its a great achievement how he didn’t spend the money he didn’t have and still kept the club in the champions league to keep the money comin in. Obviously we’ll get that defender in and I also hope we buy a midfielder too cos if flamini gets injured as well as Arteta then we’re absolutely fucked
Yeah he cares more than anyone. That’s why he works for free and is so open and honest with the fans
You must never had held a public facing job…
It sound a bit like he’s never had a job….. (paper round excluded).
We need many Sanogos & Abous
I know you lot probably don’t read into the papers much, but considering it’s a position we’re badly lacking in I can’t help but check which DM’s are on our radar. Apparently Lucas Silva is one of ’em, don’t know anything about him apart from YouTube reels, but I was hoping any of the Brazilian gooners could help us out. That being said there really are some decent DM’s available out there, Khedira, Kramer, Schneiderlin, the Bender brothers, this Lucas Silva chap. Fingers crossed Wenger ends up buying one.
i like the bender brothers. why not take them both?
Because this aint FIFA bitches, as some Arseblogger would say.
The Ox is a great DMF – all we need is the other players fit!
Wouldn’t mind a back up though…
You must have ‘inside info’ to really know that they’re available.
Because no one on here would be dumb enough to believe the papers!
Well there is such a thing as contract term and as you approach the end of it you’re pretty much “available”. Khedira and Silva are both nearing the end of theirs. Kramer, Sven Bender has continually spoke about taking their game to the next level, something like what Cesc pulled off when leaving for Barca. So in a way you don’t need that much inside info to know who’s available.
As most footballers agents arrange what the player says in order to get them the best deals, you can’t take a single word they say as fact. Rumours suggest Khedira and Silva have both got ‘preferred deal’ lined up and are just pushing for better terms. They are ‘Rumours’ but there may be some truth. Cesc just wanted to play for his ‘childhood’ team, the rest was smoke and mirrors . Kramer and Bender could be wrangling for better deals or… ???? that’s the problem. You could be right about some of these but you don’t know!
We’re not in the market for a Defensive Midfielder. Wenger said himself he was after ‘one more body’ in january. Now reading behind the lines he is obviously talking about an CB. He said he would sign one after we sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona. Hopefully he will try to repair the misstakes made in the summer. But for defensive midfielder role? I honestly think Wenger is extremly stubborn and will stick with Flamini and Arteta in the role because he believe they can do a good job. He has failed to purchase a player for that role for several… Read more »
Flamini and Arteta are getting on so it’s only a matter of time before he buys a DM, I doubt it will be this transfer window though. A decent CB is a must though given Kos injury problems so I expect to see that happen.
So, which attacking midfielder are we buying this january?
Hodor’s available from FC Winterfell, he’d do a job at defensive mid
Oh my god that picture though…
I got 57 thumbs up for saying “we will beat Liverpool today imho”
Everyone seems so positive today – how great is that?!!
I really hope we win!
I am now shitting it!
COYG!!!!
Wenger has dine an amazing job to balance the books as has been said time and time again. I urge fans to look at teams like Man U and Liverpool as well as the small struggles at Barcelona with their managerial switch. All this to say let’s appreciate what we have in Arsene, which is a fantastically shrewd and intelligent football manager.
I know the point you are trying to make, Blogs, with your tune – sometimes the Pendergrass isn’t greener…
Oh boy…
He’s far from perfect! Lets be slightly objective and see whilst hes done alot of great things these have been met, depending upon viewpoint with varying levels of mistakes and tactical shortcomings
In that case, we are not afraid to expect big signings in January.
Make this good team even better Arsene.
U would suggest Helobouy Mandingo as our January CD buy his big hard and does take charge.
Dis is the same man who brought an injured Kim Källström on loan last window, insisting that there was no players on the market that could improve the squad. So he brings in a player that was benched in CSKA Moscow and on top of that injured. Insisting that he would bring something special to the team.. I am sorry..’ I don’t follow the logic.
United needed defenders too, and they didn’t get any either. Market forces apply in real life, and reality sometimes impinges on our wishlists. Funnily enough most teams don’t like selling decent players in January. Sometimes you just have to take what’s going when other options pan out and time is running short.
You also failed to understand what Wenger said (or you are deliberately ignoring the word “try” that he used when talking about positions he wanted to fill).
Oh, and the word you were looking for is “This”.
Looking forward to schneiderlin signing then. No one could say he’s not the right player and now we’re not scared to spend money, happy days 🙂
Winston Reid such an obvious choice (he wouldn’t even have to move house) that in convinced it won’t happen.
A.w looks chuffed he can buy any player gd news
Is Diaby still on our payroll and if so – why?
Schneiderlin and/or Jedinak would be handy targets/buys to go after. They’ve both proved they can do it in the Premier League. Both are solid, and our back line needs a solid and dependable player in front of them. They are very important to their respective clubs so probably aren’t going to be allowed to leave though (which is exactly what Wenger means by “find the right player”. You can’t just pick a guy and he’s yours.).
