According to the Mirror, Carl Jenkinson has signed a new 5-year contract at Arsenal ahead of his second successive season on loan at West Ham.
The right-back has a couple of years* left on his current deal at the Emirates – signed in December 2012 – but impressed Arsene Wenger with his perfomances at Upton Park last season.
The decision to offer the 23-year-old a new contract both safeguards a potential future transfer fee and opens the door for a continuation of his Gunners career.
Jenkinson made 29 Premier League appearances for the Hammers last season as he consolidated his Premier League credentials and had been courted by both Sunderland and Southampton this summer.
A lifelong Gooner, he signed from Charlton in 2011 and has since featured 57 times in Arsene Wenger’s first team. This summer the defender has been on international duty with the England under-21s and will now begin pre-season training at Upton Park as Slaven Bilic’s side continue their Europa League qualifiers.
Arsenal face West Ham, who have paid a fee in the region of £2 million for Jenkinson’s services, on the opening weekend of the new season; a match he will not be eligible to play in.

*We’re making an educated guess.
Great news – good lad and part of an exciting future for us
Wow….the mirror finally has their very own exclusive…..or do they…hmmm. i like the way the evening.standard finally picked up on lacazette faving a tweet linking him to arsenal. Good luck jenks
Too good to sell, good deal for everyone 🙂
Excellent, his dad will be singing his heart out now.
He’ll come back and challenge Bellerin after Debuchy returns to France to finish his career there.
Meanwhile, Man Ure have signed both Schneiderlin AND Shweini! Our midfield seems very lightweight all of a sudden 🙁
Sorry. What?
The Bible said, ‘Don’t covet your neighbor’s ass or donkeys’.
Go and watch Francis Coquelin highlights from last season to make you feel good about what we have.
look up Schweinsteiger’s injury record over the last 2 seasons. Man U will be lucky if he is healthy for half the games, plus he is 31 in a week or two! Schneiderlain might have helped us, but that price was crazy for a guy who might not have been in our starting 11.
This actually makes me so happy.
I never knew I had such high regard for him/his potential. Glanced at the picture, saw a claret and blue shirt, and my heart sank. Like, I felt it……shite. Imagine the joy I felt a few seconds later.
I don’t know if it’s his allegiance, his route to the – relative – top, his bantz, or his potential, but my sub-conscious really likes him and has high hopes for the lad.
Corporal Jenks remains a gooner. I think his attacking football’s improved alot since he last turned out for us. He was good in the England u21’s (that run and assist vs Germany, eesh). Will be good to have some more Arsenal blood in the team when he gets back. Good luck Carl!
Theo
Glad for him and for Arsenal. Having two young right backs competing with each other and pushing one another in a year or two after Debuchy is gone can be nothing but a positive for them and the team.
Great news…to think some people said he was going to get sold because Chambers is better.
but then, wenger sees chambers future in midfield (or CB)… and arsene knows…
Yes great news, really wasn’t sure if was going to stay or not,but he had such a good season for west ham it would have been stupid to sell him, another loan spell with them is also great for his development
This is exactly what I hoped would happen. He’s getting better all the time and is definitely not someone we should be moving on.
I want him to make it with us more than I have any Arsenal player before because he’s a real Gooner. He’s living our dream.
1) agree with everything you say
2) love your username!
Jenks sure is living the Gooner dream! I’m 37 now so I only have a few years left of quality football. No scouts at my last Sunday league game sadly. In fact it wasn’t even a game, I was coaching under-4s, but not one of them could get the ball of me; I felt like Messi!
West Ham “have paid a fee in the region of £2 million for Jenkinson’s services”
Considering we bought Jenko for approximately £1m, I’d say that’s pretty good.
The loan is what’s really great though, he’s gonna get a plethora of domestic games plus quite possibly 10+ in Europe, and then return ready to compete with Bellerin for the starting spot.
No one likes an “I told you so,” but…
I’ve been saying for the last couple weeks on this site that the Sunderland thing was all just about putting pressure on WH to cough up the loan fee we wanted. Looks like it worked. Arsene must be pleased he was able to squeeze money out of somebody without even having to sell a player.
£2 million for a season long loan deal sounds good… This should put his value close to £10 million if we were to sell him.
However I do hope he makes it at Arsenal and we do not have to sell him.
You forget he’s English, and not complete shit, which means he’ll probably be worth more. Let’s say more like 49m pounds, because 50 is just too much.
Backup. So when Barcelona try to snitch Bellerin we still got a little Jenks up our sleeve. I’m really glad he signed, he’s a fine dude.
Perfect
Why sign him to a five year deal?
I thought the idea was to get shot of dead wood not give them five year deals and then loan them out.
I am starting to get the same dread feelings I get every summer with Arsenal – keeping faith in the useless and not signing the quality we need.
Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger sign for United and we sign the fourth choice right back to a new deal.
Unbelievable – just fucking unbelievable.
It’s almost as if you want signings just for the hell of it.
Deadwood is a term that means shite. Jenks isn’t shite, ergo he’s not deadwood.
Legit response, you notice how players who get put in the papers are in the twilight of their contracts? It means they’re easier to purchase. So, having a longer contract on players people would actually buy from us and we might want to sell (also see Wellington Silva, Joel Campbell), it gets us more money, Foot-E-con 101 right there.
Here we go again…Facepalm!!!
Considering his wages are pretty low, signing him to a 5 year greatly raises his value if we decide to transfer him as opposed to not doing it. You are literally wrong even on your own terms.
Borrowing your quote, that comment was “Unbelievable – just fucking unbelievable”
I don’t I agree with Jenkinson being deadwood – 1st choice RB for a team that will be playing Europa League. Your confusion is due to your perceived position of Jenkinson in our team, he is not first choice and I’ll be surprised big time if you point to a better 2nd/3rd choice RB.
However, like you I’m worried about ManU’s signings. Its not like the Liverpool or Tottenham signings which are quantity but not quality.
This is great news. In today’s game where there is more money than ever, I find it refreshing to see a lad who genuinely cares for the club and desperately wants to play and become a legend with us (unlike a certain Raheem). I do believe that this lad has a fantastic future ahead of him and delighted the club have seen this and his passion for the club and offered him a new contract.
Too good for West Ham not good enough for Arsenal.
I sold Debuchy on FIFA but Jenks and Bellerin just do not get into the 80s huh it’s no fair cos they’re both brilliant and I love them.
“Did even think about breeding Debuchy and Bellerin before you sold?”- Blogs, 2015
On a separate note. You can’t help but think with this sterling deal going through that city must have been sniffing around arsenal’s British contingent. Good to see the lads sticking together.
Good piece of business. ..
Brilliant news! Bags of potential and a great attitude who should have a future at the club not only for footballing reasons, but also for the human side. A bit old but this is gold: http://player.arsenal.com/features/video/4875/the-chat
Dear The Season,
Hurry up.
Kind Regards
Titties
We need a hero!
Great news
Let’s not be naive here guys.
We’ve probably done this so we can get more transfer fee for him when he eventually does go.
I love Jenks, he’s a good little player, but I can’t see him being a regular for us.
His loan spell can prove me wrong though, and I hope it does.
Considering Debuchy will likely move on in another 2 -3 seasons, the opportunity for RB is still open but Jenko faces stiff competition from Chambers. Calum is a more articulate RB but the issue involving him is he has not had as much regular playing time as Jenkinson on loan. Both these players could come into contention as alternate to Bellerin. I personally still feel Chambers is the better option because he is more composed and technically better. But Jenkinson can make it up with consistent and regular playing time on loan where Chambers is short on games at the… Read more »
Will he get in over Bellerin? I don’t think he will . Glad he’s staying though
