Well, that certainly wasn’t the way anyone wanted, or expected, to kick off the new season. Collectively poor, some more so than others, so we might as well get on with it.
Well that sucks!! I know Cech was poor (Good thing it was not Ospina, we would not hear the end of it), and really and truly Santi should be played in that no. 10 role as he is Arsenal’s assist king and a goal threat with Ozil on the wing (if he is going to be on the pitch) in my honest opinion. Do not know why all the fuss about Ramsey as he is a central midfielder who comes up with crucial goals and assist (even more so than Ozil) where ever he plays. Ox is my favourite Arsenal… Read more »
That was a pitiful display no doubt, but overall our team played poorly. The defense was poorly organized, and overall, everyone looked shell shocked at conceding and West Ham’s usual physical style of play. They just need to get into the swing of things. Ramsey needed to not go for glory at around 30′ and play the open man (Debuchy? I forget who it was) on the right – getting a goal there might have changed everything. Still, the lack of energy and effort at 65 minutes in was entirely disappointing. Everyone should expect better of themselves, from the fans… Read more »
not sure why you’ve not given him a rating. He was better than everyone else. The chance at the end was good play. Just about the only time we were dangerous.
Did anyone else work their keeper more than that at any point yesterday?

Please can this shock Wenger into action!
We won consecutive games with Coq+Cazorla playing in the middle last season, and now he’s again playing Santi out wide? What!? Just like the beginning of last season, where Ozil was wide and we were playing 4-1-4-1 to accommodate Wilshere & Ramsey.
Wenger needs to select his team when the pressure is on, not only when we have already lost the flipping league and are out of the Champions League!
There’s a video on youtube with chelsea fans saying that cech is terrible at judging the flight of the ball, which is his weakness.
Well that didn’t take long, did it.
and there lies part of the problem…. our supporters have been pretty shocking for over a decade now. I think it’s the complacency of success and the arrival of the , post ’98, nouveau gooners. Whatever it is, we never get going like we used to, pre ’98….. and people leave after the 75th minute etc…. and yes, they have the choice as they pay their money, but it’s the first game of the season not the deciding game!
Same here. Our time difference to BST is 8 hours and I didn’t miss one game last season. Even games from the previous year, Chelsea, where we lost 6-0, I watch to the end. Fair weather fans are a waste of my time.
Happens every time. Some Arsenal fans (stress some) seem to believe they’re only there to be entertained. They forget they play an important role in motivating and supporting the team – all the more important when we’re losing.
You have to wonder if he planted a small device in Chec’s head to control his actions at a distance.

I really don’t understand why Wenger has put Ramsey in the middle and Cazorla on the left when the Coq and Cazorla pairing was the foundation of our good second half of last season. Ramsey plays about 20 years further forward than he should and congests the middle.
I also thought that Chamberlain, apart from a couple of good moments played poorly and is often 20 yards too deep.
Exactly what I said when I saw the lineup. Tried it pre-season, it didn’t work, should have immediately reverted back to what we know. The time for testing things like this out should come when we inevitably have injury worries at some point this season, or when Santi at CM stops being so effective. Why change it when it worked so bloody well last year- it’s bizarre. We NEED pace on the pitch, without Bellerin the Ox alone wasn’t enough.
So then why revert back when it’s something we tried for a few games, realised it worked, lo and behold we went on our best run and won an FA cup. 1st game of the season isn’t a time for trying new things

I would probably get in another 4 players after today. Not bothered about which position.
Just as long as they splash about 30 mil on each we’ll be alright.
Win the next 10 in a row like we did last year after losing to Villa! That will do nicely.
Cech can be forgiven, perhaps a bit of nerves playing his first meaningful game of the year, but the rest of the team really have no excuses. This looked like the Arsenal of a few years ago and we know we’re better than that now. I hope we don’t have a to read a week’s worth of quotes saying “we need to learn from this game blah blah”

The fact is a Ramsey-Coq partnership just doesn’t work. Ramsey does not like to be restricted in terms of his movement around the pitch and Coquelin cannot fend for himself in the way Arteta can. He’s not nearly as calm or confident on the ball. It has to be Ramsey-Arteta or Coquelin-Cazorla centrally. No two ways about it.
I think Özil was one of our better player today. He was comitted and tried to make things happen. He gave some good ball, balls could be assist on blessed legs but we simply blew away every chance today.

Just back from game. Very frustrating. The arrogance is still there I’m afraid. Early days but the boss needs to be questioned on why he continues to use Ransey on the wing. The last 3 home games of last season we did not score and had no width whatsoever down one side. The start of the second half, he puts Santi back into middle and moves Ramsey to left wing. He has to stop trying to accommodate Ramsey. It’s simple really either he plays in the middle or he don’t play. Wenger has to make the decision.
Unbelievable. You are getting thumbs up for suggesting it’s a good idea to play Ramsey on wing. We didn’t score the last 3 games at home last season that makes 4 now. But yes let’s keep playing a central midfielder on the wing.
I didn’t say play him on the wing I said we scored goals in the last two games last season with that option. WBA was the previous home game to today. You suggested a run of no scoring that isn’t there.
I would prefer to see Ramsey dropped and to have theo and ox on the wings today with santi alongside coq and ozil behind giroud
Agreed .
We should make the choice of santi or Rambo
I would’ve played theo on left
Ox on right
Giroud up top

Poor result, but why did the club’s medics let Giroud play on? He looked flat out.
Obviously they have concussion protocol although Giroud’s not going to ask to come off, is he? Someone should have had the iniative to take him off. Playing with concussion is incredibly reckless.
And they might just miss the obvious question. In the World Cup final, they apparently asked Christoph Kramer something, and the answers he gave made them send him back in. A while later he asked the referee whether this was the World Cup final, and when told yes, he thanked him and said that was important to know.
The way the sport as a whole deals with head injuries needs improvement.

No seriously. Winning 5 Preseason games is no reason to play as if your opponents are crapping their pants in fear of you. West Ham had a plan and were up for it. Played well. They should, they are a Prem team who’ve had a lot of games already. They’ll be no easy games home or away and our players (manager? club?) need to respect that.
Hopefully this will be a repeat of the start of 2 seasons ago. Pick up some bloke in the window and win a bunch of games in succession.

Ramsey and Giroud the worst players on the pitch by a mile. Number of times Ozil was inexplicably blamed as he played passes into their feet around the box and it just bounced off them, incredible.
Would have used the bonus rating on Wenger, for introducing a new tactic on the first day or a new season, crowbarring all the centre mids in again. Ozil off the front man? Wide men withdrawn in a midfield 4? Same old mistakes.

So far I think Ramsey has been inconsistent, overrated, and a one-season wonder. There I said it. The boy has his qualities but unless he steps up, he doesn’t deserve a position more than anyone else in midfield.
Ask yourself this question how many other top clubs in Europe would Ramsey be a starter ?

First half wasn’t bad. We had a few half chances and did had possession against a decent side. However, we gave away a cheap goal shortly before half time. When the fuck are we going to learn how to defend and not piss away matches in situations like these. Sure Cech is partly responsible for the goal and shouldn’t have come out like he did, but he wouldn’t have if our back four had defended that foul properly. How many points have we lost last season conceding goals from set plays? Sadly, I don’t see this changing and even if… Read more »

I don’t know why we don’t shoot from distance more. Tight, angular passes around the box don’t always work against a team who’s happy to sit back like West Ham. I just saw coutinho take a pop from distance and score. It baffles me how we don’t do that more when we’re chasing a goal. Cazorla, Ox, Giroud can all score from distance. I think it’s something we should at least try more but wenger obviously tells them not to. Frustrating

some Arsenal fans are just disgrace. 37 games left and we didn’t play that bad. It was just one of those days. First goal wasn’t Cechs fault, he had to go out and risk because koscielny was in wrong position. But the critics by some fans are… I ashamed Arsenal have that kind of fans.

Ramsey just can’t play in a 2 because he leaves too much work for his partner
Yeah he generally does but Arteta can handle the workload against the bottom 12 or so when we dominate possession
Arteta can cover a whole midfield by himself and Coq can’t? Arteta who’s top speed is minus 4mph?
Ramsey shouldn’t play the next game. Not because he’s crap but because it throws the balance off. Walcott on instead. Or Theo instead of Ozil.
I think Ozil’s a bit of a Veron to be honest. He’s obviously a very very good player but the Premier League doesn’t suit him

I’m hoping this is the game that makes Čech try harder than ever before. Also, I can’t help but feel as though the defence was particularly shocking today but there was no real reason to be happy from an Arsenal perspective.
Rating as a team: 2.5 at best. No real understanding there today between the players. Just individuals who happend to wear the same colour shirts. “Oh look, there’s a red shirt, I’ll pass the ball in that direction…”.
We can do so much better.
Funny enough the team that won the opening match on Monday went on to win the PL in the last two seasons. Chelsea drew yesterday and we did this today. City plays tomorrow. Just saying.
I wonder, can he still win us 20 points?? Balance: -2.
Bellerin must play against crystal palace,if he’s not injured.
Wengers Love affair with Ramsey continually unbalance the team and puts them at risk.
Smell that? Ahhhh the fresh aroma of Arsenal football to a tee. Panic when you least expect it.
And we are off!! Well it’s good to have football back. Hopefully we bounce back from this.
If we go on to be undefeated for the rest of the season this loss will be worth it.
Went to the funeral of a 42 year dad of two Friday. His 16 year daughter gave the most heart wrenching speech about her dad. 13 year son barely holding it together. A church full paying its respect…….perspective all, perspective!
Perspective indeed. Sorry for your loss.
I found out shortly after the game that a work colleague had died on his way to work. We’d all be wondering why he was late and hadn’t called? Really kicked my footballing loss in to touch.
Sadly, I don’t see this changing and even if… Read more »
We are the only team that I know get so hyped up before any match and this happens, I just wish there’s no hype so the pressure doesn’t engulf our players. One upset Gooner 🙁
Got it all wrong wenger, parking midfielder and playing them out of position just because you have to play them is just wrong. Carzola n Coq had a beautiful partnership in the middle, why change on the first EPL game of the season while you had the whole preseason to experiment
Cech played like he’s still being payed by Chelski.
“Someone teach him the English for ‘goal side'”
ummm bit racist?
No, not racist at all.
I just wonder what Andrew and James would’ve said had Ospina been in goal.
Haven’t seen the game yet as stuck at work, & a bit scared to now. What the chuff happened?!?
