Ramsey: it’s too soon to judge

Aaron Ramsey has urged people not to make judgements about this Arsenal team yet, saying they need more games to prove what they can do.

The Gunners have struggled in their opening 4 games, but have 1 more point this season than last despite having scored 6 goals fewer (two OGs notwithstanding). And the Welsh international believes the team need more time to find their rhythm.

“So many things can happen in the league,” he told arsenal.com.

“My view is to look at the table after 10 games and then see where everyone is then. So many things can happen.

“Hopefully that will be our only upset, the one at the beginning of the season, and if we go on a winning run to win our next five or six games, then maybe we’ll be there or thereabouts again.

“It’s important to just concentrate on what we can do. You can’t take too much into how the table’s looking so far.

“Teams are going to have upsets and hopefully the opening-day upset will be our only one for a long time.”

Of course it is still very early in the season, and you can’t make any definitive judgements just yet, but hopefully after the Interlull we can start playing the way we know this team is capable of.

our objective was a strong start
it didn’t happen and that’s why we are so disappointed
it’s definitely too soon but Man City seem really up for it

Man Manny

My only consolation is that this team is capable of playing much better than they are at the moment. I believe they will come good. All they need, I believe, is one very good game (I hope that will be the Stoke game), and then the Arsenal of the second part of last season will come back. The imminent return of Wilshere and Welbeck will help. From what I’ve seen so far, we are in the best position to give City a title challenge. That is why I think we are a striker short at the moment. Walcott will not… Read more »

Cornelius P. Snuffington III

Silly Ramsey, you should know that for all too many it is never too soon to judge. Whatever happened in the past two minutes is constantly the most important thing to have ever happened, and it tells us everything that is going to ever happen in the future.

not deluded

Well said Cornelius. Also, if we don’t sign another striker in this window, we will never score again, (own goals notwithstanding).

ThaatArsenalGuy

Don’t worry about Man City , Maureen was right about it being such an open league, they can go from looking like Brazil to Barnsley in 2 games the same way 3 wins in a row will have is compared to the invincibles

Fabulous

Everybody knows the league is open (even Wenger said the same thing) so I don’t know why you have to quote Maureen. Speaking of which, he definitely is the specialist in not lasting more than 3 seasons. And I’m loving every bit of it. The down part to that is Klopp is available. But I suspect Klopp is big enough to want to have plenty of say in running his clubs instead of answering to an oligarch owner:

Bould's Eyeliner

I don’t think Klopp would embrace a job where he has to fight off the Moscow Mobster all that much.

Fabulous

Ramsey’s got a point. Having said so if we were to compare our squad relatively to the rest of the contenders we do look likeweight in certain areas. Especially a striker. Tomorrows deadline day and it doesn’t seem like anythings brewing but let’s hope Wenger can suprise us

Bould's Eyeliner

We don’t look lightweight at all – we just look…. impotent? We’ve got the coverage. We just need the players to actually play like they can. Also we haven’t seen Welbeck in how many months… If he improves his finishing he could well be an answer for many of our problems. And we know Giroud will probably go on a goalscoring spree sooner or later and then inevitably collapse from exhaustion.

The problem is Walnut. What is walnut doing. He just doesn’t look like he’ll ever improve from what he is already now…

Tom Thumb

The one good thing I took from our poor start this season is how we managed to stay high up the table with only 1 goal scored, shows the team know how to win ugly with a bit of luck added in . If we made this start 2 or 3 years ago we would be in the bottom 3.When the team get over this mini goal drought we will be fine. Our 2 centre backs were out the day of the Liverpool and we still kept a clean sheet, that never would have happened a couple of years ago . I know… Read more »

like a red head Ljungberg

no, we played all our matches ugly, even against a 10 men team we were ugly, we were just lucky with two own goals to win some points.

Arsepedant

Newcastle was the kind of win that two years ago when the Manc wankers did it under the Scottish beetroot the press fell over themselves calling it a gritty win by a team of battlers. Last year when the Chel$ki oil cunts did it, the press fell over themselves calling it a tactical masterpiece from a manager who sticks to his guns to grind out the win. But let Arsenal do it, and the world is coming to an end because we’re shit.

We won, for fucks sakes. WE WON!

Bosscielny

Of course it is too early to judge. At the same time lets strive for better performances. We don’t want to let it get to a point where its too late to do anything.

Another point I’d like to make is regarding the atmosphere in the stadium. I’d request all the fans that go to the emirates to be a bit more vocal and get behind the team. It is sometimes too quiet when things are not going our way.
You never know if this might help improve the performances at home slightly.
Onwards and upwards COYG

Eduardo Stark

I think we should sign the old man Di Natale. putting him in front of Alexis would be mega. goal guaranteed.

Tea Hairy

I thought one of the main points of our squad being relatively unchanged was to hit the ground running. Seems a bit silly now. Why is it we always have to wait a few games early season, whereas other teams, even ones lower down, can surpass expectations? I know it doesn’t mould the entire season but we’ve dropped points we really shouldn’t have, ones that may seem far more valuable come May. And to those saying City will wobble, that may well be the case, but in the last 4 years they’ve finished 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, and each time… Read more »

Lovely seeing Chelsea and Liverpool lose at home though, not to mention its now a Swansea hat trick over United!

ger

Kinda off topic, but maybe not………..
One of the big Manch clubs have spent mega…….
But when in doubt, throw the Hair Brush Fell(aini) on and hoof the ball up to him.

the Car2n Goon

van Gaal is crap… Crapper than Moyes… The irony is that van Gaal has been given the keys to the shitter where he is offloading vast chunks of Manure loot

goonero

He’s right, but that’s not really the worrying thing. The worry is that we’ve managed just a single goal in 4 games. It may just be a hiccup but its sapping away confidence in this team to mount a title challenge without being stregnthed before the transfer window closes.

Man Manny

We have scored 3 goals – own goals are a result of pressure. You cannot discount the effort of Alexis climbing higher than their full-back to force the error againt CP neither can you fault Ramsey’s cannon that Krul parried into the path of the Ox and his return also that deflected in of Collocini on Saturday.
Oh for more own goals if that means we take all three points.

Man Manny

…not also forgetting Ramsey’s legitimate goal chucked off and Bellerin’s penalty denied by the ref.

goonero

I haven’t forgotten those things nor am I discrediting the work and pressure that those own goals culminated from. However none of these things change the fact that we’ve only had a single goalscorer in 4 games and he’s only managed one goal. Of course there are contributing factors that skew stats (stats don’t paint the full picture) but that’s not to say they have no meaning and aren’t valid cause for concern. You’d have to be lying if you said our performances till now haven’t got you worrying about our ability to mount and maintain a title challenge. It’s… Read more »

Me

Luckily for Ramsey nobody expects anything from Arsenal. So a good start or a bad start has the same impact on their hopes for the club Already the league has Man City all over it. Investment in players to compliment world class players such as Aguero and Toure should see them win the Premiership comfortably. Whereas Arsenal invest in a goal keeper that they didnt really need and continued faith in players who have proven in the last few years that they are simply not good enough. Unless of course there are people who are pleased with our form? Three… Read more »

Inspirational comment, if I were so bold to assign a score to your post, I would give out a solid 8/8 for effort.

Also brilliant use of the “fourth place trophy” cliche, you’ve taken it and twisted it pretty well haven’t you!

John C

Exactly, why do we have to wait 10 games to make a judgment on a team we saw play 38 games last season and weren’t good enough?

Everyone’s seen this team and it’s not good enough to win the league, let alone the champions league, who is Ramsey trying to kid?

Vonnie

Either you’re a troll or you need to find another team to “support”.

SFGiants

Yo, Vonnie, read the Comments Policy.

German Shepherd

Hopefully Coquelin doesn’t get injured. I’d take any signing at this point. Literally anyone. I thought we would be in for Lars Bender, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. I don’t know if it’s “arrogance,” and my response to Gary Neville would be “Yaya Toure’s don’t grow on trees.” But it shouldn’t be that hard for a group of professionals to find SOMEONE good enough to add depth to our squad in that area, someone with height and strength. Victor Wanyama?? Wtf!! So easy…

Lass

Wanyama would be behind Coquelin and wouldn’t start that many games. Wonder if he is ready for such a role? Of course if you put him in massive wages like City does but we have already players like Arteta, Walcott on high wage on the bench. Would like to see a low profile DM signing with potential.

neutral

You mean like the Polish kid (Bielik?) we signed last January, didn’t Wenger suggest he might be ready for the 1st team this season?

- DFS

Why the hell does everyone keep posing we can only pay one CDM at a time? Its moronic.

I would love to see us play with two defensive stalwarts in midfield for many games. That would leave two wing backs to bomb forward and support the front four. 6 attacking players on any day we set up defensively?

This by the by is laughably how the vast majority of teams play week in week out.

not deluded

“Literally anyone”?

Rossi88

So are we gonna signe anyone. Thumbs up for YES, thumbs down NO.

Seems strange all the Draxler talk has not started considering previous attempts from us. I could throw a load of names out there, but personally cant see us signing anyone. Higuain is the only one i can see. Dm theres a few players that could come in and do a job.

Daan van Lith

Draxler is going to sign for wolfsburg

Arsepedant

Draxler has already signed for Wolfsburg.

GraysGooner

It is too early to throw in the towel but a solid pre-season after a good end to last season had us feeling positive so the poor form and lack of goals is frustrating. Very few teams have won premier league without a 5 or 6 game blip so for now staying in touch is key. Beat city twice and match their other results and we are above them?. Seriously though, we are looking just as good as Chelsea Man Utd and Liverpool so don’t give up just yet. COYG!

Ajinkya

I’ve heard and seen our players talking this same shit for so many years now. They should really stop talking more and instead let their football talk for itself. It is always the same grind. I think they are tutored what to speak at what stage of the season. 1) Before the season : We have to start strongly. 2) After the initial stutter : Don’t judge us so soon. 3) 1/3rd of the season : We still have a lot of time to go, we will make up the ground. 4) Mid-season : Still half of the season to… Read more »

P.S : And one excuse they can use all year round, “It’s important to learn from our mistakes.” And then go about repeating them without ever learning anything.

That same broken record? On and on, it goes…

Stewart Robson's therapist

That was what happened last year. Rather different script the year before that, when we were top of the league for the entire first half of the season and then got a load of injuries and blew it. Do you actually watch Arsenal or do you just read what the papers and the pundits say about them?

It saddens me that there are still so many Gooners gullible enough to fall for the fabricated media narratives. Form your own opinions for goodness’ sake.

Ajinkya

Really? Yes, we led for the first half of the season before last year and then withered away. Injuries cannot be an excuse. Every team has to deal with them and so should we. Who is to blame if we don’t have the required depth? Last year we had Monreal playing in centre back position. Why? Because we didn’t care to buy even though we were lacking the depth in defense. I’m not gullible and I do have my own opinions. Maybe you should too instead of just parroting back to me what you read from self-righteous blogs. And just… Read more »

Ajinkya

So you think it was all just gullible harping on my part? Please take a break from your therapy sessions and try to remember. The year before we withered away in the second part of the season. Why? Because we couldn’t deal with the injuries. Every team has to deal with their injuries and so should we with having players who can come in the team and win games and are not just making up the numbers. Last year, Monreal was playing centreback. Why? Everybody knew at the start of the season that we needed defensive reinforcements. But we didn’t… Read more »

Teish

Yeah Ramsey I totally agree, let’s wait till it’s 15matches to the end of the season and we are probably 10points adrift of 4th position

- DFS

I think we should actually wait for Christmas and adopt a new attitude for the New Year.

I love what someone posted above…I think quite a few of us are judging the sum total of last season, the season before that etc., along with the first 4 games this season.

Frankly I am sick of this PR style drivel the players keep coming up with. Doesn’t feel a one of them speaks from the heartwith passion anymore.

Vonnie

Two points that we should have had against Liverpoo would have put us in third. We weren’t fazed by Dirty Barcodes and the ref, although he missed the penalty, started dishing the cards and the pundits agreed, a major breakthrough! One good signing would really get this show on the road, and I’m sure the club are working on it. It would also be nice if the fans would get on board and support the team, some Gooners seem to be our own worst enemy, and I feel that conributes to our poor home form, although we need to find… Read more »

Chelsea won three games at the back end of last season (Hull, Stoke and QPR) simply because the opposing goalkeeper made unforced errors. Pretty scandalous cock-ups they were too. Did we hear a peep from the media about it? Nope. But everyone’s harping about these own goals we’ve benefited from. Once again, the media has one rule for Arsenal and another for everybody else.

Paul

A striker please Dad!
How about this one for £44 million?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wigl0AT9maM

Jimbo 1

This is essentially the same team as last season, so we can judge as we already know what they are capable of. They are creative and will make chances, but do not have the strikers to convert into a sufficient number of goals. I hope something will happen, but it is unlikely a top player will come in now. If anything some youngster with potential but an unproven track record, who will either flop Sonogo style or be the next Anelka.

Fatgooner

Shut the frack up, Ramsey. We’re not good enough.

German Shepherd

We are good enough, we just have to play at our absolute highest potential and finish our chances. Coquelin is legit, Ramsey is so good that Arsene Wenger plays him in every single game, we have Sanchez and Mesut, an experienced CB partnership, and we have pace and finishers (even if it doesn’t look like it right now). And we have Arsene Wenger, one of the best managers in the premier league. I have literally never seen a comment by you that is supportive, it’s ALWAYS dissent or critique. Your little agenda is becoming less and less acknowledged apparently.

Fatgooner

Where do you buy your weed?

skinnyarse

The top teams will faulter at some stage of the season, we just faultered bit early, you watch the boys will come good. COYG

Wenger the fashion icon

Strangely i’m enjoying the league so far…not that seeing Mourinho suffer has anything to so with it.

SFGiants

It’s the 3rd-year curse with Mourinho. With his psychopathic personality he get bored by the third year anywhere. I’m guessing we won’t see him at Chelsea next season.

- DFS

Sadly, my season is not balanced simply because Chelsea or Mun U or Liverpool are underperforming.

Gooners & Roses

I thought he’s going to repeat that “Judge us in May”.

jiminycrickets

there’s nothing we can do now that will makes us challenge city…not even signing benzema….2nd/3rd/4th place is all the same…take your pick

Izzymuzzet

No, 3rd is better because then you don’t have to play the CL qualifier so then you can concentrate on the league and make an excellent start to the season, especially when your players haven’t been to a world cup either. I mean errrr…oh.

Wangge

Ramsey, I don’t think its too soon. It will affect our position at the end of season. I

He's got no hair but we don't care...

Seriously my mighty Gooners, it’s not like we’re being quick to judge due to our short sighted nature.

This is history we’re talking about.

Years of knowing we needed a keeper or a DM or a striker and seeing nothing done about it.

Recent history has also taught us that when the leaders opens up a decent gap on the chasing pack so early, they are rarely caught and the league can be lost by Christmas.

Quick to judge? Yes. But it’s because we don’t have much time.

Jimbo 1

Pato is following Arsenal on Twitter. He was a good player at Milan but a bit injury prone, so will fit in perfectly.

santori

10 games in is when you nominally get an idea how things chape up. At the moment we aren’t fluent enough in front of goal but we are carving plenty of opportunities. Liverpool have spent close to 80m quid on players and have flattered yet again to deceive. United has spent even more dispelling the myth that simply buying is a recipe for ambition. Chelsea despite Moanrinho’s protestations are poor and Wenger now looks to have yet again done a coup for Cech at 11m quid. Only City have taken off but they are still only 5 points away. Waaaaaay… Read more »

I agree with Ramsey. 4 games with 12 points does not wins you a medal and 4 games with 7 points doesn’t get you relegated. People do not call this the toughest league for nothing. Even the best teams will lose at some point. I do admit that playing catch up in the league is tough, sometimes tough to watch as well. They need support, and we are not helping when we’re playing on our home soil. But ones thing for sure, we will improve and be better

SA Gooner

10 games played and we are top of the log. Nice.
