Time for some home strength, says Wenger

Arsene Wenger says that the Gunners form at home will be hugely important in the quest to challenge for the Premier League title.

Arsenal face Liverpool at the Emirates on Monday night, a fixture they won 4-1 in last season. And, bar the final game of last season against West Brom, it’s the last game we scored in on our own turf, with a goalless opening day this season, on top of drawing blanks against Chelsea, Sunderland and Swansea at the tail end of the last campaign.

“If you want to have a successful season you want to be strong at home,” said Wenger. “Normally we are strong at home. This is an opportunity to show that.

“We missed our first game and we had to look at ourselves, and we responded very well. Now we need to come back to our usual strength that we have at home.

“Your confidence is linked with your last result and at Crystal Palace we responded well. From that we should have enough confidence to go into the game positively against Liverpool.

“We know it’s very important.”

It’s not quite a ‘thing’ yet, but it’s about time we built some momentum at our own stadium, and Monday would be a good place to start.

Listen to Philippe Auclair update the Karim Benzema situation and more on today’s Arsecast.

Arsene's Apologist

Playing in front of what sometimes feels a large body of entitled tw*ts, some of whom seem to want the bad results so they can do their Wenger out songs…, it’s not hard to see why the players get more nervous at home than away. And during transfer season it feels that much more on edge (fucking media story lines). We need a statement to show our real strength. Come on boys.

tom

I always wonder why the home fans never sing their hearts out when the game is boring. I know, we need something to feed off, but it’s mutual for the players right?

JJ's Bender

As a season ticket holder for 22 years I can confirm that this bunch are the absolute worst. It’ll take another 10 years for the plastic fans to retreat and let the proper fans back.

Completely agree with the Apologist btw, the atmosphere is unbearable for me, I can’t even imagine what it must be like for our boys

Oluwamayowa

Nice point you made But got to ask, saying you’re a season ticket holder for 22 years, does that add to the credibility of your statement in any way? Regards

tom

Does it matter??

Besides this is someone who supported AFC before we were successful

Johnboy

Well Oluwamayowa apart from the very obvious fact that he’s been in a stadium for 22 years’ worth of groups of fans?

chippy's chip

Errrr…..OF COURSE

La Défense

Yes, yes it does.

La Défense

Mayowa, are you even 22?

Oluwamayowa

Let’s Say I wasn’t born in the 90’s

Why not

I kinda think it does actually.

Doesnt prove anything, but definitely adds weight. Considerably more informed than someone without a season a ticket.

rch

Maybe the real fan’s can’t afford it

Arsenalman29

I personally don’t agree with this blaming the fans Bullsh*t.

Chelsea were champions last season, does that mean their fans were amazing and better than ours? Helped them win the league?

Its an excuse that cannot be used for professional athletes, i might put a bet on for Stoke to reach top 4 this season, there fans are great lol?

Izzymuzzet

Pay the highest prices around so entitled not to watch shite

Oxy

They serve you with what is the best they could make.

So, if you don’t enjoy it, then find another restaurant.

chippy's chip

Well they shouldnt have priced the working class out FULL STOP

Rob67

Sorry this criticism doesn’t cut it. Firstly, blaming the fans is rather like politicians blaming the electorate for the country’s woes. There may be some truth in it but it ill beholds the politicians to say it. Secondly, Arsenal have very consciously gone down the route of Man Utd – and indeed City and Chelsea are following suit – attracting the ‘day tripper’ types with ‘the match day experience’ – offering an emphasis on the ‘experience’ rather than the match. That and the cost, were two of the key reasons I pulled out in 2010. It’s certainly true that the… Read more »

I find when I go, which is rare these days since I moved to the north, that there are a lot of tourists. They’re generally nice enough, and enthusiastic, but most are not ‘hard-core’ fans, or even anything close to that, and they don’t know the chants and songs and so can’t join in. It does leave and impression. I’ve never particularly noticed too many boo boys, but then I usually go with a large group of friends to the cheap matches, so maybe that’s why. Certainly doesn’t approach how I recall Highbury being, but maybe that’s because I was… Read more »

Point taken.

High ticket prices — entitlement comes with the outlay. Rich people are consumers of culture not creators. Lower the prices and people will relax and have more fun.

- DFS

Dial back the sanctimony for god’s sake, it’s embarrassing.

If there are close to 60,000 in the stadium an awful lot of people have worked really hard to buy their tickets and support the team…calling them a large body of entitled tw*ts is uncalled for.

It’s little wonder why the Arsenal fans are divided when this type of comment get’s thrumbed up without much thought.

Why not

It is however a sport still. Not a television series. Losing happens. Sometimes i feel the “money” gets in the way of that concept for some people.

wellarsed

Arsene is right: we need to build up some home form – and we need a win!

Me So Hornsey

I think we’ll be more focussed for this one.

And when we’re focussed we usually win.

Oluwamayowa

Is it just me, or does anyone feel our Title Winning Season (if It’s going to be) starts on Monday?

I feel we’ll know the strength of this team this season against Liverpool. not that I rate them But if we are going to win the league, we should be smashing the “Johnnie Walkers” at home.

A draw on Monday is Unacceptable.

Ya Gunner Ya

wellarsed

Absolutely, the first two games were nervy, unsettled affairs and not really indicative of much (though the ability to pull out a win at CP was encouraging). We’re a couple of weeks in now, with most of the key players back, playing a team that has title pretensions – this will be a good early-season benchmark.

COYG!!

Bendtnerschristmastree

Saw liverpool play bournemouth last weekend. They actually can’t play 3 one touch passes in a row without fucking up. People saying Coutinho is better than Özil is either stupid, liverpool fans, or really stupid liverpool fans.

Alex

Anyway, anybody is better than Özil if you listen to pundits, media or even some Arsenal fans… I’m sure some would say that the last toe of the worst Liverpool player is better than Özil.

Man Manny

Liverpool will start the game with caution bordering on fear. Let’s not give them room to grow into the game. An early goal would do the trick and then we settle down and pick them off. I see us score up to three.

Heisenberg

Benteke will feel at home here, in Koscielny’s pocket again!

Tibetan Gooner

Home games will be key to challenge titles when they(players/managers/medics) performs on the turf and when we(fans) hold our stand to the last minute whether loss or win; just an opinion.

chippy's chip

OOOOOOOOOOOOSPINAAA

AntiSpud

If I remember correctly they had a guy playing with them while ago. A certain guy called Gérard if I’m not mistaken. Wonder what happened to him. Been long time. Well with or without him they will get a wack anyway.

Stringer Bell

I think all the games at the end of last season that we did t score had Ramsey on the wing. I like Ramsey but pray wenger had the bollox to bench him. If he can’t dislodge Santi which he clearly can’t at the moment then he needs to sit on bench (cue those to tell me he scored against Liverpool at home last year from the wing) secondly if we are losing with ten mins to go the atmosphere will be toxic, I was there against villa a couple of years ago and will be there Monday. Momentum is… Read more »

Springbank 1962

AFC designed atmosphere out of the stadium. It was never a priority. What’s more there doesn’t seem to be anyone at the club who has a clue how we might get things back on track.

Now what we need are proper initiatives – a return to standing-only areas would be a good first step. We’ve the best away fans in the Premier League; is it feasible to give them their own area?

Samuel Wilson

I remember Wenger saying he had a hand on help when theydesigned the stadium, to look specifically imposing when away fans came to the ground….

Me So Hornsey

I gave up my season ticket to join the Arsenal ‘travellers club’ a few years back, possibly the best move of my fan career.

Real fans, hardcore, passionate, loud, funny and witty chants, genuine tribal camaraderie, honest appreciation of the players, everything you don’t get at the majority of home games if all isn’t going well.

Getso gunner

Monday will surely be the best time to start and Iam optimistic they will

Nody

Didn’t know we had a Benzema situation. Someone tell me more.

shitbird

Well, when there’s this much smoke there’s probably a fire… or an incredible heap of bullshit.

Andy Mack

I may be steam instead of smoke.
Fresh manure steams!

surulere Gunner

If only we could hit the scousers for six….COYG!!!

Matt

With everybody getting good players we’ll be lucky to finish top 4 again. Even if we win on Monday.

Amir

Ffs….. How many chances do Arsenal need to score a f… goal. Another frustrating game. Yes Ramseys goal was wrongfully disallowed but that shouldn’t break our spirits… Another frustrating week it is then!
