Arteta: Squad will support Jack Wilshere

The news that Jack Wilshere will have to undergo surgery to fix his broken fibula has come as a huge blow to Arsenal, but also to the player himself.

After a good pre-season, during which he looked to build fitness after an extended absence last season, the midfielder is set for at least three months on the sidelines as he recovers from this latest problem.

It’s got to be so tough for the Wilshere, a young man who lives for football, as a seemingly endless succession of injuries prevent him from playing the game.

However, Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta says he and the squad will be there to support him as he begins yet another programme of rehab.

“He has an enormous talent and support from every department of the club, and from the players because we feel sorry for him,” he said.

“He has an amazing career ahead of him. We are responsible for putting that into his head every day and to not allow him to fall down because, at some stage, that is the danger; that he does not believe in himself or his body and he needs to trust himself.

“Jack unfortunately has had a lot of difficult moments, but he has shown a lot of character and enthusiasm. He needs to use it to prove he can get back.”

Suggestions that this injury might be career threatening were played down by Arsene Wenger at his pre-game press conference in Zagreb this evening.

“This kind of injury is not career-threatening. I am not a specialist, but this was just an accident. It is a bone injury. It is not linked with the injuries he had before.

“There is nothing malicious in there, just a part of his bone that has not healed.”

We wish him well and hope that he can stay fit to fulfill the potential he has – and that’s proper skipper stuff from Arteta too.

Always appreciate the news, even when it’s bad. FWIW, fibia isn’t a bone. Lower leg bones are fibula and tibia.

Still, I’m sure Jack could find a way to break a made up bone.

SB

We’ll have two LANS by next transfer window.

We know how Wenger loves his LANS over ANS!

Ox in the box

That was sad, mean and unnecessary. It is amazing what people allow themselves to say when it comes to something as bizare as football signings…

Ox in the box

Jack will come out of this just fine. There is more than enough time to show what he is made of. Go Jack!

Totalgooner

Absolutely gutted for him. It must be so brutal to be constantly F’d in the A’ by injuries. It must be such a challenge near /on impossible to stay headstrong and positive when these injuries/set backs are becoming such a regular occurrence. I just don’t know whether we are ever going to see him fully fit playing a full season, which is a real shame. Because I think has the potential to be a world beater someday.

neutral

I feel for Jack and for the loss of a promising player.

However, I doubt he can play regularly. He has had too many hairline and stress fractures in the same area, it seems like he has a fundamental weakness in his bones, perhaps in his lower leg and ankles specifically. Some people are not made for sports, even the people who are do lifelong damage to their bodies.

Nigerian

The fans will support him too

Little Mozart

Arteta always knows how to support the younger players in tough situations like this. For me, he is a very good captain, but I know he’s not for everyone.

Bosscielny

Sadly some of the supporters don’t give enough significance to this side of captaincy and other things he does behind the scenes.
They have this image of Keane and Terry shouting around which sadly signifies a good leader for them.

There are different types of leaders who have different styles of leadership and we should start appreciating these players.

Arsepedant

Jack’s still young and has a long and successful career ahead of him. He showed what he can do when he’s fit with six MOTM performances in a row for England. I hope he comes good from this latest setback and has a fantastic second half with us.

Dan Hunter

What the actual fuuck!! Diaby 2.0. I think while his value is around £50m sell and bring in Gotze, Pogba or one of that ilk

rochester

yes, exactly. Let’s sell a 23 yo player with a fucking enormous potential. Some of the best Spanish midfielders of our age sing his praises. Smart to write him off at this point. Arsenal are class because they give a talent like Diaby every chance to come back. Jack is Arsenal born and bred. He’ll come good or he won’t, either way a real Arsenal fan will be in his corner. Not supposed to get personal on here, so I won’t tell you you’re an ass.

La Défense

Please unmount your high horse. Comments like yours are fashionable nowadays, not to mention politically correct. FFS Jack is 23, and we’re still talking about “potential”. Pogba is a year younger than Jack, and he is already miles ahead in every area. The gulf in class is staggering. Potential… Pffff!

Mootilated

Santi Cazorla is 30 and has just reached his peak. He plays in a similar position to Jack Wilshere and given that Jack is 7 years his Junior, he does indeed have plenty of time to fulfill his potential.

Mpls

Once again, comment in poor taste mr. hunter. Just not a decent thing to say.

Davide

Everything you know about the sport must come from fifa man. So if a Pogba or Gotze came in and got an unlucky long term injury would you piss them away the next transfer window too? Keep it realistic and support the kid

Dan Hunter

Am I being unrealistic? Is it unrealistic to assume Jack Wilshere will spend more time injured than playing for the first team? Based on past experience it is more than likely. As for supporting Jack Wilshere i don’t have to publicly justify my support of one of my favorite players, but the facts are the facts. We are talking about football and what is best for the team. As a fan of Arsenal first and foremost, I don’t believe Jack can go a full season without injury. There are some players who are just injury prone. I feel sorry for… Read more »

Pogba is awesome, no doubt there. but paying through the teeth for him does not exactly constitute ‘value’. It’ll take two kings’ ransoms to beat Barca and the others to his signature.

Now back to the point: the lad just found out he’s out again for months, a depressing time for him, and the first thing you have to say is ‘Sell Him’. Regardless of your opinion on who we should have made a ‘Massive Swoop’ for, I think the comment is in poor taste.

Gutbukket Deffrolla

Pogba wants to play in Spain. We don’t have enough money to convince him otherwise. He’s just a pipe dream.

Throwing your toys away is not a very good way to convince mummy and daddy to buy you new ones. Most people learn that by the time they turn five.

billsito

Out of curiosity, was Gabrielt the one who injured him in training ? And since he has received deatht threats ? …. A Braziliang guy was sayingt this on tweeter … Is that true ?

Arsepedant

Yes, it was a challenge from Gabriel that caused the original injury. There are rumours that people posted death threats on Twitter after it happened. All that proves is that some people on Twitter are idiots.

santori

Hope to see Jack back. Clearly not many bothered to listen to the liam Brady interview in Singapore. Liam Brady who has been our youth set up since before Wenger rates jack the most highly. He reckons if there is one thing he needs to do more, it is to shoot (cites the finish at West Brom last season) Jack gives a different dimension to the team being willing to take players on and having the tight control to do so. Much like Diaby, he is one of only a handful in the squad that can truly waltz through the… Read more »

RVP had also his injury issues before exploding as a player. Hope Wilshere does the same, the injuries he is suffering are rather accidents. Although you wonder if his playing style with often holding to the ball a bit too long has a part in his injury record.

Less Rambly Pete

Is a shame for him. Wouldn’t want him to change playing style but I did wonder if there was something in somebody elses comment about him learning to ride challenges better. Hazard in particular gets taken out a lot and for the most part doesn’t hurt himself. I wonder if that’s down to hazard actively drawing fouls (and therefore anticipating them) compared to Wilshire who just wants to make something happen. Maybe Hazard just eats more Calcium Santoz

Ben

Great point re: Hazard. He seems to know it’s coming so gets his body in a position where it can’t be hurt, whereas Jack throws every limb in front of the ball.

Gutbukket Deffrolla

He uses anticipation. He throws himself down before they get a chance to give him a proper kicking.

Alex

I don’t watch the games of England but truly it’s time to stop saying Jack has an enormous talent… He had time to prove it last season with three months as n°10 thanks to Wenger, putting then Özil on the left and Cazorla on the bench. We saw what happened! Arsenal was playing bad, losing, but everybody was focusing on hating Özil.
Wilshere out, Arsenal played better. I feel sorry for him, no doubt, but don’t see him better as he actually is. Or i could pretend i have myself a tremendous talent while never showing it.

Mpls

I don’t understand why it always has to be player A is shit or Player B is shit, when the more realistic and feasible scenario is that the chemistry and how to adapt to each other’s style never got established.

But I know, that’s nuanced and complicated.

Gutbukket Deffrolla

You go try to con Wenger into thinking you have more skill than you actually have. Let us know how that goes, you silly duffer.

How come you’re the only person who thinks we started playing better in the second half of the season because Wilshere was out? Everybody else seems to think it was because we recalled Coquelin from his loan when Ramsey got injured and that his presence as DM improved our play.

Are we all wrong?

Parth

Why couldn’t these kinds of injuries happen to John terry or Rooney?

Why does it have to be our jack?

midgunner

I for one am confident that Jack can overcome this. Seems to be just unlucky picking up different injuries, rather than it being one recurring injury that he can’t overcome. Bad luck can’t last forever. It’ll be a further test of his character to come back stronger but he has the right attitude to cope I think. Maybe it will help him to mature further, which is the one think I feel he needs to accomplish his potential. Look forward to him coming back into the team after xmas and really adding bite to our midfield. He has the potential… Read more »

Look, I bought into the Diaby rehab……..this is Arsenal, that’s what we do.
it didn’t work, ok, I accept that, but let’s try again with Jack.

He deserves the same commitment .

Scramy

I love Jack, really concerned for him tho, during his last rehab last season in an interview he seemed really down and on the verge of welling up over talking about it, which wasn’t great. I just want him to succeed so much

sauce

Can we just give the no.10 shirt to someone else? We’re the only team on the continent that goes the entire season with nobody spotting the shirt. Not that it makes any difference though, but it’d be just nice to see mesut wearing his proper shirt number..

Gutbukket Deffrolla

Bollocks. Napoli never field a no. 10 shirt.

Gunnergetuptogetdown

Gutted for Jack and the team. However compared to the leg break Shaw suffered yesterday, Jack’s injury is nowhere near as severe. Wishing both players a speedy and full recovery
