The Mirror report this evening that Per Mertesacker was involved in a car crash on Monday, but that the German is unhurt and ready to resume training.
The Arsenal vice-captain has been out of action in recent weeks due to illness, and was left shaken but uninjured by the incident in a downpour on the M1 on Monday morning.
They quote a club source, saying, “Per had an accident after he left training this morning when he went onto the M1 returning home. The car aquaplaned into the crash area on the central reservation.
“He was shaken up but not injured. No other vehicles were involved and there was no one else in his car. It’s not a big deal.
“Per is fine and ready to return to training.”
Thankfully it wasn’t anything serious. It’s not yet known if Mertesacker is ready to travel with the squad for Wednesday’s Champions league clash in Zagreb.
The traveling party will be announced tomorrow.
I love Mertesacker, everyone should, but it will be interesting to see if Gabriel can Bellerin him out of the starting XI, Gabriel has been pretty good in my opinion.
Maybe I’m in the wrong, but I don’t really care for comments about whether he starts on an article about his recent – traumatic – car crash. Feels a bit cold.
I completely agree.
Football aside, he’s a person with a family, including two little children. We had a tragic death of a member of the German NT some years ago, and I really don’t want there to be images like the ones from that memorial ceremony ever again.
If it was as serious as you say then I agree. To me this article doesn’t make it sound traumatic. The exact quote from the unnamed club source was, “it’s not a big deal.”
It’s all subjective I suppose.
The way I read it might not have been how you intended it to come across. Imagine, someone being misunderstood on the internet.
To me, it sounded like: “Per Mertesacker suffers car crash, how will this affect his chances for selection? It was only a small crash? Well he should be back challenging Gabriel asap!” It’s not the most humane response, which doesn’t have a bearing on whether I’m right or wrong to challenge it. Just my opinion.
He had a fender bender and you want to hold a memorial service?
He aquaplaned off the M1. It was probably a bit more frightening than bumping another vehicle at 5 mph.
The point is, it’s a bit crass to use the first comment to say, ‘wouldn’t be surprised if you lost your spot in the squad, mate’.
Big Friendly German. Am so glad your fine.
perhaps it was his AUTOmatisms that kept him safe!
Wow,thank God he is safe and nobody is injured. But really life is stiLl much more precious that a place in the starting line-up
You can thank God for saving Per, so long as you *blame* God for causing the crash in the first place.
I’d prefer to thank the people responsible for safety standards in car design, myself.
The Swedish?
ShrukenMonkey, don’t be THAT guy lol.
So if arsenal lose because of the refs’ mistake, who’s fault is it?
Evolution. It failed to develop the ref’s or linesman’s brain and eyesight to a sufficient standard that they could accurately judge whether players as fast as ours are onside or not.
Thank Bergkamp he’s right?
Glad to he’s alright – something like that probably is no more than a fender bender.
Speaking of colloquialisms – aquaplaned! I believe we call it hydroplaning Stateside, curious distinction…
You say hydro, we say aqua…
🙂
You say Hydra, we say Hail!
I understood that reference.
let’s call the whole thing off……
The only song I know that requires an instruction booklet to sing it correctly.
That entire “aquaplaned” sentence is a humdinger for me! Crash area? Central reservation? What a world!
so much so that I misspelled my own name.
I completely agree.
Football aside, he’s a person with a family, including two little children. We had a tragic death of a member of the German NT some years ago, and I really don’t want there to be images like the ones from that memorial ceremony ever again.
Comment went to wrong place there.
Let’s perpetuate it and make it bigger.
We must go deeper.
He’s okay and safe, all good. That aside, has Gabriel done enough to prevent Mert walking back into side…I quite like the dynamic between kos and him, but Mert is an important squad player, helping younger players off the pitch too. And debt collector…
From a perilous crash I’m glad he haven’t been left Per less….
Audi he crash I wonder?
Me can’t write right
Mert is tough, and a consummate professional. Doubt he was speeding or doing anything stupid, because the guy is all class. There are plenty of players that would immediately make me suspect foul play, but not the BFG.
Thank God he drives from the back seat.
Wonder why they call it a travelling party? They aren’t having a party, or going to a party. Just one of those mysteries I guess. Like, why is a Tottenham?
Because shit is shit.
You can almost say he was shaken, but not stirred.
*Turns to grab coat, trips and falls. Breaks neck.*
Glad he’s okay!
thank god the accident was not serious but think per should stay on the bench for now Gabe is doing pretty good in the back four arsene Wenger should give Gabe chance to show himself
Yea
GABE wouldn’t even have been in a car aksident, cuz he ain’t sloe
Glad Per is fine, I am sure he was driving a BIG FUCKING GERMAN car, which kept him safe and in one piece.
He drives a Audi q7. Thank god he’s OK
Child : mum where is my food.?
Mum:it is where Chelsea is
Child : do u mean at the bottom of the table?
Mum : you are a brilliant boy!
I will prefer Gabriel to play againts Chelsea because He is the best candidate to frustrate Costa as Delaney and Stone did effectively.
Glad to hear he is fine, come ya gunners!! Lets slot in a few goals in the champions league and find our striking form again.
What car does bfg drive anyway?
B reg Reliant Robin.
Per, very glad you are safe and sound, and awaiting the triumphal return of Mertescielny!
We have missed you!
It’s gotta be a Merk……amiright?
Merckesciedes??!…?
Fuck my coat, keep it.
@Cornelius… I’d expect a grown adult( I take it you are 21+) would know that nobody in his right mind is goin to say to media reps stuff like:’ oh yeah he’s injured/hurt will take time to recover and so on’)… Club officials will always try to play down any concerns… That’s called PR and damage control … Knowing wenger, Gabriel will stay in the squad even if mert is absolutely fine, which is unlikely as any kind of accident causes if not physical then at least fractional mental trauma as in aftershock, therefore sensible thing to do is letting… Read more »
Imagine you’re in a car crash and then the guy getting out of the other car is Per…Day made.
If it’s my fault and I see an 8′ 12″ musclebound athlete get out of the car I will run for my life leaving a trail of Tottenham behind me
Now he knows how we feel whenever he goes sliding in!
That’s good. You can reuse it for le Coq one day too.
Out of interest I remember seeing an interview with Vialli who said he always got a chauffeur to training and matches as he felt the driving made him stiff.
You sure that wasn’t our Coq?
When he says he was left shaken, does this mean that the result of some dimensional paradox means Mertz spun out and dinked Lehman’s car, who then strangled and shook him?
Stranger things have happened.
Glad to hear BFG is fine. Do we remember the last gooner to get in a traffic offense? His game was never the same afterwards. But I have a feeling Per will not suffer Andre Santos syndrome.
Now if he only drove as slow as he defends!
Per was shaken but not stirred
