Arsenal have confirmed that Jack Wilshere will require an operation on his left fibula after a setback in his recuperation from a hairline fracture sustained in pre-season.
It’s the second time in ten months that the England international has required surgery. Last November the midfielder went under the knife after damaging ankle ligaments against Manchester United. He was initially ruled out for three months and ended up missing 26 games before returning in mid-May.
Wilshere had enjoyed a promising end to the last campaign, scoring a scorching goal against West Brom for the Gunners and two fantastic strikes for England against Slovenia, however, after partaking in the pre-season Emirates Cup win over Wolfsburg he picked up a new problem following an accidental training ground clash.
Arsene Wenger ruled Wilshere out for up to six weeks at the time but he’ll need another three months on the sidelines to overcome the latest blow.
A statement on Arsenal.com reads: “Due to a slow healing response from a fracture suffered in August, the club can confirm that Jack Wilshere is to undergo an operation to his left fibula.
“The decision to intervene has been taken quickly after regular reviews by specialists, who feel that Jack’s scans show that the healing process is not progressing as well as expected.
“Jack will have surgery in London in the forthcoming days. This will involve inserting a small plate in his left fibula. Jack is likely to be out for approximately three months.”
The 23-year-old has been plagued by fibula and ankle problems since November 2009, as the following (German-language) graphic from Transfermarkt underlines.
Fucking bullshit.
What a particularly shit Tuesday this has been.
Woooooosaa….
The games ain’t even begun yet bruv!!!
Forever COYG!!!
I hate to say it, but it was inevitable. Every season.
shame. Get well soon, Jack. and don’t make me keep saying it.
Get well soon , jack. Come back stronger
As Wenger said, he overplayed jack but its perplexing and sad that it had a detrimental effect now
So, you do believe that the number of games Jack played in 2011/12 season is the reason he’s crocked in 2015.
I am loving your use of logic. I need to take that course to measure up.
Q: If I need a new horse and George has four apples in Antartica, how many games will Jack Wilshere miss?
A: Purple, because aliens don’t wear hats.
See, I can do that logic too.
It’s not so illogical. Overplayed and injured, recurring injury issues. I’m surprised you can’t see that this connects. Does an arsenal player have to be injured with a tackle for you to apply the logic of long term issues stemming from injuries?
I’m surprised this poster has had so many down votes
His last several injuries have been from tackles. Kinda hard to be overused when you’re never on the pitch.
Trying to connect those things now is trying way too hard to find a way to blame Wenger for the fact that Jack gets hacked. See ‘Purple Antarctic Martian Apples’ above.
By your logic, every player who starts this young should be all having injury problems. He isn’t the only player who started young. We ourselves had Walcott, Fabregas etc who started quite young and played regularly. Stop blaming Arsene for everything.
Walcott was a bad example to use there.
Unreal banter guys… This Was so predictable. Ffs
Fuck
Wilshere deserves his chance for God’s sake. I hope this will be the last! At 23, the world needs to see this lad on a regular basis. When I remember that Barca game 4 seasons ago, I wonder what our Wilshere would have become with more consistency. *sigh*
This really does sadden my heart. Can’t imagine how he must be feeling right now. Swift return Jacky boy.
I might have to take a trip to Amsterdam to release the stress for him…
Forever COYG!!!
Come on Shad, you are slipping.
On a serious note, I just hope jack recovers well and we don’t have any more injuries. Let’s go Shad FC!
This leaves a The Jeff sized hole in my heart
This is a real blow again for us. We saw at the end of last season how much drive, energy and creativity Jack can bring to the team when on form. Great to able to have this option and rotate players.
You will be missed Jack, heal up fast and come back stronger.
Come on Jack – Keep the faith!
Watching Germany at the weekend I was struck how similar he is in style and stature to Gundogan and it will be great to see him hit the heights we know he is capable of when injury free.
I wonder if this fracture is just bad luck or connected to his previous ones?
They should make him stadium announcer for the three months. So good with a megaphone that boy.
Now that was funny.
Well played.
🙁
Get well soon Jack. What else can you say? 🙁
Gutted for superjack he is one of us and will be back stronger. Makes wengers team selections a bit easier though.
Sad. I am more concerned about THIS than us buying players. I don’t want him to suffer the same consequence as the little Mozart did. So much talent…. so little time on the pitch 🙁
Damn. I just feel terrible for the guy. Not much else to say. Hope he heals fast.
Gutted for him…..still he’ll be back in plenty of time to help us finish 3rd and retain the FA Cup 😉
Jeeze, depressing news. One of my favorite sights watching Arsenal is watching Jack glide past people with no over-elaborate skills just pure grace. From a squad point of view luckily we are well stocked in CM and Number 10.
Sorry for Jack, but perhaps the management should see this as symptomatic of the expectations of young players as they progress through the academy.
Poor Abou
The New Diaby. Was predictable, nothing new in it.
Too early to Diabylise Wilshere. To the worst, he will have same injury record as RVP.
That’s what happens when a player is pushed forward too early, too young, too strongly (by his club or his national team). Same happens to Gourcuff in France…
Maybe a glass of milk a day might help….
The best to him and Danny. I expect them to be non-factors this season.
Damn it! Good luck with the surgery, and get well soon. Hope to see him available for the Champions League last 16.
Ooooooh! we were so close to the title…
Ha Ha Ha !!!!
Remember RVP kept getting blighted by injuries? A lot of Arsenal supporters at the time were wanting rid of him. I think we can all remember saying “if he had a season without injury, he’ll be amazing”. And guess what? We were right!
It’s the same with Wilshire (except hardly any Arsenal fan I’ve spoken to wants rid of him; probably because he came through our ranks). He’ll heal up eventually and he’ll be dynamite when he’s gets an injury free season (it will happen) because he’s a quality player.
Sadly, it seems there are a lot of Arsenal fans on Twitter who do want rid of him. There are some Gooners who really make me ashamed to support this club, the ease and willingness with which they turn on our own players infuriates me.
Likewise – although I’m never ashamed i support the club. Having said that, I’d think the majority of tweets are utter bollocks anyway. It’s a timeline of utter drivel.
Agreed on all of your points. Twitter is for twits.
You couldn’t make this Totn’m up.
Get well Jacky.
Can we just wrap the entire fibula of each leg in titanium?
And whatever the hell that Melleablemolar thing is, swap it out. It’s dodgy.
Genuine question that I want to ask is are we all now thinking can he rid himself of these and hit his potential? How many setbacks can he survive before this key part in his growth is stunted? I’m really worried we might miss out on our most naturally gifted midfielder in years due to this rearing its head again and again. Feel for the lad big time.
That is a real shame for Jack. This was obviously caused by an accident but his extensive injury record suggests there is an underlying problem. I am sure I heard somewhere that his running style causes excessive strain on his ankles, which might mean it is going to be a recurrent problem throughout his career. I sincerely hope not for his sake and Arsenal’s.
Yeah, it was the world-renowned medical expert Stan Collymore who said that. He knows a lot about injuries because he was the reason behind so many of Ulrika’s.
It was just a little setback….
(Solitary tear runs down cheek)
This is becoming sad now. I love this guy and want to see him doing great. Maybe he should go to a softer league for some time for the sake of his career.
If he is back by Feb 1st (which is highly unlikely as he’ll need time to regain fitness and assumes no setbacks which in Jack’s case is not realistic) he will miss at least 23 PL matches, plus all the group stage CL matches and many of the FA Cup and Community Shield matches (which is where our long term injuries will start to impact the squad). It’s likely he will miss more and I would not be surprised to be a whole season situation again. Nobody who follows Arsenal actually believes he’ll be back in 3 months which is… Read more »
Keep fighting Jack. I’ve waited years to see the player I know he can be, another 3 months is nothing to that.
Well at least it’s ankle and fibula, not ankle and fistula.
Another career going waste like Diaby’s. Tough luck.
From the table it appears he is injury free during most summers. And has suffered some setbacks immediately after returning from injuries. Maybe he needs a different, lighter training schedule.
Instead of putting in a small piece of metal plate, why not fused all the bones in his body with titanium alloy?? I know a guy that survived a procedure like that and he’s been doing just fine.
He wouldn’t be able to travel, he’d never get through the airport metal detectors.
Cuntlick
He’s not alright Jack! Shit and fuck!
The squad is setting up nicely for a bunch of LANSes in January.
Yes and where da f is Rosicky??
He had surgery from an injury sustained on international duty a while back. Haven’t heard a timeline on it recently.
Brilliant!Just Fucking Brilliant!
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccck!
Get well soon jack. I hope he learns when we comes back to passtge ball more than always run with it. After ozil he is one of our best passers offensively. Theres more than one way to skin a cat and nit always dribbles which end in bad tackle injuries. Other great dribbles learnt to be great passers in their youth – bergkamp, gazza , gerrard, scholes learnt to use all their skills not just one ( dribbling. For England he passed the ball around So well and no where near a horror tackle
Have to feel for the bloke 🙁
DDNA……. Diaby-Deoxyribonucleic Acid commonly known as the VOODOO Doll
Terrible news for Wilshere and I do wish him all the best for a speedy recovery however…..
With regard to first team selection when fit, he represents a headache that the manager can happily do without. With everyone available Wilshere doesn’t make my first team. I’m not having him ahead of Ramsey; the Ox; Oezil; Carzola or Coquelin. He’s great for rotation, FA and league cup games and of course England will be gutted, but first choice selection, specifically, Welbeck is a far greater miss; given our striking situation and cover out left.
