Having been sent off against Chelsea, it has emerged that Gabriel feared the wrath of Arsenal fans, feeling he’d let them down.
But the Brazilian has spoken about how he was taken aback by the support he was given after the incident. Despite falling for Diego Costa’s tricks a little bit, there’s no question that anyone other than the Spanish international was to blame – something that surprised the former Villarreal man.
“As I walked off after being sent off against Chelsea I thought the fans would hate me,” he said, “but the support was unbelievable.
“I have been tested by Costa before in Spain, I think he knows that we were causing him issues, but this is life, we move on. I should have listened to my manager and Cech when they said not to react to Costa.
“We will play again,” he said sounding very much like a man who would be into the idea of some revenge, undoubtedly served cold.
He’s also spoken about his life at Arsenal, and how he’s learning defending from both Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, and some key commands from the man in goal.
“I want to stay here for a very long time, I don’t speak the language yet but I feel at home and this club is perfect for me.
“Having two players to learn from like Per and Laurent is a gift from God. I am shadowing them and picking up lots of things. Iwant to learn more from Laurent he is really good at coming from behind and taking the ball, I’d like to bring that to my game
“Cech is a great keeper he talks to me a lot, I have learnt a few phrases that I know he will say, he is a leader.”
It’s so far so good for Gabriel, there’s a lot of promise there, and let’s hope he keeps growing into this team.

Listen to the Arsecast Extra Live for further Gabriel chat and much more!
Have you checked the legitimacy of these quotes? A couple Portuguese speaking Gooners in /r/gunners couldn’t find a source except these tweets.
I saw these quotes earlier this week and they were attributed to ESPN Brasil. I don’t speak a lick of Portuguese so I haven’t checked it out personally.
Son. Go home and have a beer. We’ll break that fool from Chelsea’s leg and give him a barracking later. You were brave to stand up to him.
Way to go Gabriel.
Love his passion for the club.
I can see him safeguarding our backline for a long time
More so, I can see him being considered one of the best defenders in the world if not the premiership.
That fearless attitude of not being afraid of any team is what was missing. The quality has always been there but now we have that Henry/Viera “I don’t give a shit what badge I’m up against” mentality.
Forever COYG!!!
We love you mate.. Victory through Harmony
We appreciate you too. You are quite a talent and at 24, your best days are ahead of you…
I see a CL medal and EPL medal round your neck in no distant future… I believe.
get the lingo sorted, he could be the new guvna.
COYG
Class act. No better way to dish out his revenge than to steer us towards the title.
Next time they meet Gabs will finish tearing him a new one!
Regardless of quality, you would always rather have a passionate player whose emotions can boil over, and try to rein them in, than someone who is indifferent and try to inspire them to care. That’s why Gabriel has the potential to be a cult hero for Arsenal fans.
Yes, I love this kind of players. You can add THE Coq in this lot.
I love our Brazilian destroyer. To think David fucking Luis is in front of him for Brazil is bonkers.
David Luiz has scored more goals than a lot of strikers. He also can shoot exceptionally. Gabriel might be a better ‘defender’, but what Luiz lacks in defending, he compensates for in goals, attacking & some occasional individual brilliance.
Having said that, i reckon the major reason Luiz is ahead of Gab in the national team is because Luiz has built a partnership with the team captain (Silva). I guess their coach doesn’t want to tamper with that, like the saying goes, ‘why fix it if it isn’t broken?’
I would say 7-1 in a World Cup semi on your own turf is about as broken as it gets.
Yea that’s why David Luiz is one of the best defenders in the world… wait I’m gonna stop laughing in a minute!
That’s are definitely not the qualities anyone looks for in a CB. 50 mill for him has to be the best bit of transfer business of all time.
Gabriel on the other hand is a beast defender. Glad he is a gooner
Silva lost the captainship to Neymar after WC.
That partnership does not deserve preserving after the WC horror show though Silva was injured for the semi
Wasn’t he suspended ?
My bad; yes he was. But he came back to play 3rd place and did not fare better.
Unless he scored as many as Ronaldo or Messi, his goals certainly do not compensate for his defensive shortcomings. He’s truly- and I don’t mean this in any exaggerated way for effect- woeful. I’d rather Senderos.
You didn’t mean that in any exaggerated way for effect…, but you’d rather Senderos over Luiz? Haha, Reminds me of a person prying right into another’s personal affair by starting his comment with “don’t mean to pry but…”
Love this guy, and the Cech factor is becoming more and more evident, as in he brings both world class skills AND leadership/organisation to the back. We’ve not had it since Jens and I think it might be the final piece to get us the league.
I have the feeling that a solid, clean tackle in the next meeting early on is enough to wind Costa up straight away….let’s do this
Haha “we will play again.” Costa should worry I think
Somebody needs to do a mash-up of Gab’s face and the Terminator.

Nice!
Murderously serious look 🙂
I think I just found a new favorite player – Rosicky’s age was giving me some worries.
we will play again…… just in from our Angel of death! that should send chills down a mortal’s spine somewhere in London!
“… he is really good at coming from behind…” love you Gab.
I love gabriel what a warrior already one of the best in our squad.. hes gonna be a arsrnal legend i can just tell..
Hopefully hell pocket costa in the future. Its also really good to hear that cech is having such a major influence in our defence I reckon he was a major influence in that chelsea back 5 weve taken their major cog and plonked in a major rival. The orchestrator directing and moving everyone into position blocking key zones and making shots more predictable. I wish schceczny was here to learn to be honest.
One could loudly hear Cech’s voice barking instructions to Gabby in our match against utd.
How can one not speak english yet after almost a year? Baffling, really
Reckon you’d speak fluent Portuguese in under a year?
¡Brazilian Paolinho Portugese at that!
Two modules of 48 hours each, with three hours, twice a week would take four months – and that will get you to b1 level, which should be enough. Basic maths and common sense, that’s all it takes.
when you take a job in a foreign country and the job is tougher than anything you’ve done before, first priority has to be learning to do that job properly, then once you’re comfortable in that you can start thinking about learning the language, so long as he’s able to communicate with his teammates enough to do his job in the meantime (which he can) he can worry about learning to speak English when his mind is free enough to take it onboard… I’m speaking from experience.
lmao look at all these ignorant people who think learning English is easy… 2nd most difficult language to learn in the world behind Chinese, and he has to learn it on top of his football duties. good luck with that.
English is quite easy and straightforward to learn. (probably the easiest language in the world) It’s ignorant to think that it’s hard. I’ve picked it up quite quickly, and so have many other people I know. As the lad said, a year is enough to master basic communication. But Gabriel is not a linguist, he’s a footballer, so it’s not really important to me whether or not he can speak English.
He will learn the football English on the pitch. I learnt a foreign language on the pitch too.
Bollocks. I’m an English teacher and it’s my second language. English IS hard, supposedly one of the hardest languages to learn (phrasal verbs, the largest vocabulary in the world and it’s not phonetic!). Harder if you come from a country where there isn’t an education system that is particularly geared towards giving children the basic building blocks.
Europeans, especially those from the North, might find it easy because it’s basically driven into them from day one. Give him a break. He’s playing like a pro.
English is like chess in that you can pick up the basics pretty quickly, but spend an entire lifetime trying to master it.
Worse, as it is constantly evolving, its like hitting a moving target.
I agree. I was watching the Bergkamp legends documentary the other day and whilst he’s clearly an articulate and thoughtful man, you can still tell, occasionally, his grasp on the real subtleties of English is still not there. Crazy, considering he’s God and all that.
actually, yes. it’s not that hard to learn a language when living in another country. it’s part of his job (to learn english and communicate effectively with his teammates and coaching staff) and as a professional footballer, I would think he has plenty of time and resources to pick up the language. while I like him as a player and as a person, that’s still not an excuse to not learn the language.
“I should have listened to my manager and Cech when they said not to react to Costa” Cech is a frigging Gooner! Yeahh.
Top man
the angel gabriel
Far better than many of the CD’s we brought in to be backup (an old Campbell, Squillaci, etc.) and in my opinion a more consistent player than Vermaelen. Doesn’t try to do too much and is not caught upfield as TV5 often was. Plus he is a great combination of fast/agile with size and strength to stand up against the various types of opponents he’ll face in the PL. I don’t think Wenger gets enough credit for bringing players like Monreal and Gabriel over the Winter when the market is tight that are willing to bide their time until they… Read more »
imagine how good he will be when he can actually communicate with his team mates.
Seriously though, just enroll in an language course!
there’s an app for that!
check out his reaction to ozil goal https://www.facebook.com/thearseblog/posts/10153340910503580?comment_id=10153341089993580&ref=notif¬if_t=like
That was wonderful. He’s got passion, pace, power, and as a bonus a bit of kicking in him. I’ve got some pent up demand for our getting successfully stuck in. Coq and Gabriel are our lads for the job. Let Gabriel be our Angel of Pain, doling it out with impunity to opponents. Costa gets a double dose, thank you.
“I want to be your sledgehammer, why don’t you call my name.
You’d better call me sledgehammer, put your mind at rest.
I’m going to be the sledgehammer, this can be my testimony.
I’m your sledgehammer, let there be no doubt about it.”
(P. Gabriel)
In other news!
Mourinho: The ‘first’ specialist in failure. He’s the first, as there has NEVER been any before him!
Here’s what Cryuff had to say about Mourinho:
“…what I don`t like is that he always puts himself on the first row. He should be on the second row. It`s probably because of his background, where he`s never been cheered by 100,000 people… I don`t think he is educating children to play football or educating for life. He should behave better.”
Couldn’t have a better person say this about Mou. Cryuff, an example of good football, class and respect. Mou on the other hand….
Maybe all the kerfuffle after the last Chelsea game means Costa is now a marked man. Maybe the FA and the refs will be on him like hawks from here on.
Wouldn’t that be lovely. Here’s a card for you, young man. No need to thank me. Shoo! And all your fiends too. Scat!
Remember when we bought Gabriel and everyone said ‘ who the hell is this ?’…or when we bought Koscielny and people said ‘ why are we buying some dud from Ligue 2’ ……or when we bought Monreal and people said ‘ we’ve never heard of this guy, he must be shit, why won’t Wenger get the cheque book out’…….Well it turns out Wenger knows more than us. Who’d a thunk it.
No one said that. Gabriel was highly rated in spain(though Mussachio was seen as the more talented but injury prone one). Manure were also interested and tried to hijack our bid.
His stats with villareal was also impressive.
His reaction to Ozil’s goal was priceless. https://vine.co/v/e2OUHuqA9Qm
What an intense guy.I see a goal from
Gabby against bayern.
a brazilian martin keown/tony adams. who knew? steve bould is a lucky s.o.b. to have gabs to coach.
what a pick-up Gabriel is. definitely the best cover-CB we’ve ever bought, looks set to replace Mertesacker when he leaves/retires too! can see him being captain one day.
If I remember correctly Gabriel didn’t arrive untried and without merit. He’d made his mark in Villareal who aren’t exactly Ligue 2 or the Championship and albeit far from Gareth Bale priced he wasn’t bought for nowt either.
His partner was Otamendi.
Right now he is #3 in the CB pecking order. Per and Kos are the clear Established #1 CB pairing and they compliment each others game so well. Saying that, I fully expect Gab to be knocking hard on the door next season to be in the starting 11. So great that if either Per or Kos has a little niggles, Gab can come in without any hesitation or fear from Gooner fans. He’s solid and getting better all the time. Great pick up by AW!
