Arsene Wenger says that at 27 Mesut Ozil is reaching his ‘golden age’ as a footballer, and pointed to his selflessness and desire to help the team as key factors for Arsenal this season.
The German has 6 assists and 2 goals in all competitions so far, and as each game passes looks to be an increasing influence on the attacking side of our game.
Wenger puts that down to him maturing and realising that now is the time when he has to produce his best football.
“He is 27 now,” said the manager. “It is the golden age of a football player, 27 to 31, 32, the age when you know your job, you realise suddenly that it is not only important to play, it is important to win as well.
“You go into that period thinking, ‘finally’ … under 25 you think you can last forever.
“Once you get to 27 you realise it’s time to capitalise on what you have learned and efficiency takes a little bit over the playing mood.”
And it’s Ozil’s role as the team’s creative hub that has most impressed the Frenchman.
“Talent-wise, I think deeply he is a very, very collective player. He is a very respectful guy. If you tell him to do that he will do it for you. I think his talent is exceptional.
“His talent is fantastic. Sometimes I think he sacrifices himself for the team.”
The former Real Madrid man has been urged by the manager to be a little more selfish, challenging him to get into double figures for goals scored this season, and with 2 notched up in recent weeks, it’d be good to see him get another today against Everton.
Özil plays with an elegance reminiscent of Zidane.
I’m getting a Mesut Ozil shirt. A golden Mesut Ozil shirt
I was torn between a Mesut, Alexis or Bellerin shirt, and then I realised that whenever I got someone’s name on my shirt, they inevitably received long-term injuries that season (Jack and the Ox come to mind).
Needless to say, I don’t have a name on my shirt this year!
May I suggest Diego Costa?
I fear if I do so, I would contract a hideous disease upon contact with the shirt.
Either that, or I’d just burn it anyway, which would be a waste of money, regardless of how much i enjoy it.
What an Idea.
Good move. Leave names on shirts for the kids.
Ooooh how I love that half-knackered face that is a bag full of tricks! He is our most important player in this moment!
We are so fortunate to have him as an Arsenal player. I cannot believe he gets criticised by fans so often.
I simply love watching the man play football. Float like butterfly and all that.
In the shadows Mesut would be an O-silhouette.
He is a sexy creature. I am 100% fully fledged in love with him.
What’s your goal in life? If you don’t have any, Ozil can assist you with his spectral Vision to set one
for you.
Nothing thrills me while watching Arsenal like Ozil gliding like an eagle on the pitch. The problem the pundits have, for me, is that he does things that are easy on the eye; something one is tempted to think that anybody could do but really, not many even attempt.
The flick to Bellerin enroute the 2nd goal against Leceister is a case in point; jaw-dropping!
A fit and firing Ozil is the final piece on Arsenal’s attacking puzzle. If in doubt, ask Man United and Bayern.
Watching Ozil is like porn in 3D with all the Dolby sorround sound.
Bucket list just got longer.
So, what Arsene is saying is that Ozil is our Starman and with the Changes in his mentality Arsenal could be Heroes.
How the fuck am I supposed to work in Spiders from Mars?
He started a bit Low but now he’s a Hero and all is Hunky Dory!
We’ve got at least 5 Years of him being our Starman, even though it ain’t easy. Now if we can avoid injuries and too many changes, and we stay above (suffragette) city, the whole team will be heroes.
Golden years!
If Ozil is the Bowie of football then Giroud is Nick Cave!
Flamini is Iggy Pop!
Nick Cave is so ugly it hurts…
While Cave lacks HFB’s Gallic nose and all round dashing good looks he makes up for it by being suave and charismatic.
Ozil isn’t a flashy player like Ronaldo, Messi or even Alexis, but is as smooth and fluid as they come. So much of what he does is very subtle and not everyone realizes just what amazing vision he has and how he anticipates plays as well as anyone. He is so incredibly fluid and graceful at times and some of the skill he displays is sublime. My only wish with Ozil is that he would look to be more selfish at times and look to shot/attack the goal more as he certainly has the skill to do so.
Ozster
we are indeed fortunate to have him and Arsene Wenger at The Arsenal
I wonder if it might be an idea to teach players that it’s important to win before they are 27. Just a thought.
😉
dat Thin White Duke-era Ozil
Can someone please make a song for him please
