Petr Cech says he’d much prefer not to have to play football with the protective helmet he sports, but says that doctors insist on it.
The Arsenal keeper suffered a fractured skull in a clash with Reading’s Stephen Hunt back in 2006, and since then has had to wear the headgear to protect him for further injury. Speaking ahead of the Czech Republic’s friendly with Poland tomorrow though, he said he’d rather go without and that it took him some time to grow accustomed to it.
“I would be more confident if I had it off,” he said. “Whether you like it or not, the helmet affects your surroundings.
“You have your ears covered and it makes hearing worse. But the doctor has forbidden me to take it off. I wouldn’t get insurance!”
And he highlighted the dangerous nature of the goalkeeper’s job, revealing that he’s had his head wobbled a couple of times since.
“Even with the helmet, I’ve been concussed twice. I don’t like to think about what might have happened if I’d not been wearing it.”
Helmet on, man. Helmet on.
The juice is in the “my helmet” HAHAHA
He can play with nothin but the helmet on for all i care, just keep the clean sheets coming.
“clean sheets”
Nobody is going to read this now (I’m catching up) but The only thing I have agreed with Mourinho about is: Stephen Hunt deliberately left his knee in to clobber Chech in the head. No doubt about it. Watch the footage, he could of pulled out very easily.
Think how good he’d be without his helmet. Scary, given he is probably the best keeper in the PL (and maybe the world).
Still like Neuer as best in world, but top 3 for sure. Ok, let’s give him 2nd.
The job of a Goalkeeper is quite hard and dangerous. The “mental strength” he’s displaced since the reading incident till date, still on top his game and all. I duff my hat for you Cech.
And to now know he’s in-between the sticks When my team play? Now that’s an amazing feeling.
We love you Cech, the whole Arsenal confraternity loves you.
I half expected this to be a comedic article
I don’t blame you. Blogs has had some excellent material on Petr Cech’s headgear in the past. Anyone else remember this gem from after the 5-3 win over Chelsea in 2011?

I think there was rum involved in the making of that tweet.
Hats off
How can he have clean sheets if he plays with his helmet?
He wears protection ?
8/8
A married man playing with his Helmet?
It must be that time of the month ?
Double helmet please. Your life is more important.
I duff my helmet for you, the Custodian of the 7th Order..
It’s “doff my hat” actually, but you got me with “Custodian of the 7th Order”. I don’t know what that is but it sounds like it’s awesome, which certainly describes Cech. I present you with my very erect thumb (without helmet).
….or, rather than mis-spelling “doff my helmet” (funnier than “hat”), did you really mis-spell “buff my helmet” (which is rather rude really as well as extremely funny)? Either way, you win.
Save ya head
Surely they can design a helmet with better audio sensory design..perhaps cut a bigger hole for his ears?:D
Coq has to play with his helmet too, Pete, you’re not alone.
Best headline ever.
Can’t they do something about the ear holes if he’s finding it difficult to hear though? I mean this is a major sports star playing for a major club. Surely they can afford to get a better one custom made?
Hellmate! That sounds rought!
“I would be more confident if I had it off”
hur hur hur…
Junge, hier ist Helmpflicht!
Sorry.. German comedy.. shouldn’t be doing that. I know.
Petr may have left, but no worry, here at Chelsea we have plenty more helmets
The last time I played with my helmet in goal I got sent off.
God forbid one day he scores a last minute header to win against Barcelona on aggregate in the semi-finals of the Champions League and he rips his helmet off then throws it into the crowd.
And take your protein pills too
Cech has became an indispensable first team player. An older experienced head at the back is really important. And he has been nothing short of remarkable. I stop feeling that sort of nervousness when sce is between the posts. I rate sce highly but he occasionally does the ‘crazy’ stuffs. And given how Cech is performing at the moment, I’m starting to feel worried for his future…
keep it on mate
