Goal Campbell chuffed with first Arsenal strike

Joel Campbell has declared himself jolly pleased with his first Arsenal goal after he scored the third in the Gunners 3-0 win over Swansea yesterday.

The Costa Rican was handed his first Premier League start yesterday, and he capped a fine performance with a curling effort in the 74th minute to secure the three points for the Gunners.

Speaking after the game, he said, “I’m very happy. I had to wait for this moment and now we have to keep working to strengthen our team.

“I’m very happy but the important thing is the team wins. We had a good game so we have to keep going and prepare for the next game against Bayern Munich.

“The fans were incredible. They supported us the whole game and it was very important for us.”

Campbell received the backing of the manager too, who was happy that the 22 year old took his chance.

“Joel Campbell took his goal really well and he is still a young player who had to wait for his chance.

“He’s adapted to Europe, been in a few leagues and come back and I like his team spirit and work rate.

“To show he can be on the end of things as well gives him a chance.”

Go show them why Wenger decided not to bid for Martial because of YOU!

Firmcoq

I know its irrelevant. Just look at Santi, everytime anyone scores he is just so happy for them. He is by far my favourite player in this team.

Cornelius P. Snuffington III

So happy for this guy, you have to love it when somebody waits forever for an opportunity and then makes the most of it when it comes.

Sean

I actually got a bit emotional when he scored, so happy for him.

Stick around while you can, Joel!

Hutch

Indeed. I cheered the loudest for his goal out of the three.

Genuinely happy for the fella.

Pedant

Just get it in while you can, Joel. Great finish.

And keep tracking back and defending.

gooner 44

i loved it when we all sang Sol’s song
Joel’s a gooner.
but when they closed the effin M4 it took the dairy off a little bit.
got lost in swindon appy days.

Ferngunner

Ok why am i looking not so much at Campbell but Santis contagious smile?

Point was made about Campbells room to improve when sorrounded by the quality of Ozil Cazorla and Sanchez and it worked to a tee.

kaius

One of the coolest things about Joel’s goal was seeing how the team reacted to it – Santi was absolutely ecstatic

Getso gunner

Campbell is the man, very happy for Him

Reggie Perrin

Good to see Kevin’s brother score 🙂

Victor

Campbell did well. Im excited for his involvement at the Alliaz Arena. Very optimistic that he will be an important player for us in that game.

Goonersmurf

Players like Francis and Joel really warms your heart.

John C

“To show he can be on the end of things as well gives him a chance.” And thats the thing isn’t it, he’s now equalled the goal output of both Ramsey and Chamberlain combined in one match in addition to being better than both of them defensively as well. I’m very happy for him and lets hope he can keep it up as it’s only 1 match but I personally think we’ve been carrying both Ramsey and Chamberlain this season and if Campbell can be the guy who actually bring some meaningful contribution on that right hand side i’ll be… Read more »

Parisian Weetabix

Ramsey’s work on that right side is underrated. He got two pre-assists against United, and he works hard enough that all that’s really missing is his finishing.

John C

Pre-assists are a load of nonsense, it’s just passing it to someone who’s better than you.

The goal scoring and creative burden has to be spread across the entire attacking front line and in that sense, Ramsey and Chamberlain have been passengers.

If you can put out a team with 4 players that average a goal every other game the team will average 2 goals per match, and that will put you very close if not on the top of the league.

MannyG

‘passing it to someone who’s better than you’. Now that’s officially the stupidest thing i’ve ever read.

Pedant

You should come on here more often.

John C

I’m sure you’re one of the few who thought the king of the pre assist Hleb was a good player, when in fact he was complete garbage.

The pre-assist is a pass and a completely meaningless term, it’s completely reliant on the player making the assist being good enough to actually play the pass in the first place.

It’s funny how replacing pre-assist merchants like Hleb and Rosicky with players that actually score and assist like Sanchez and Ozil how much more successful we’ve been but what do i know.

Longbow

“Pre-assists are a load of nonsense, it’s just passing it to someone who’s better than you.”

That just shows how little you know about the game.

Bonjour

How the fuck?

What if A makes a defence-splitting pass to put B and C through on goal, 2 strikers vs the goalkeeper, B decides not to be selfish and squares the ball to C who scores a tap-in?

(Arsenal equaliser at 1-1 in the 5-3 win against Chelsea few years ago)

Flash of Bellerin's boots

Dear John, don’t be stubborn about it. Ramsey is our team mule and ure beating it. He covered more ground than any arsenal player in every game he’s played for us this season and he wasn’t just running around. He was overloading the defence and offence when needed.

Jozzer

Pelle’s pre-assist in today’s TV was not just passing to someone better. You really don’t get the team game do you?

John C

The pre assist or pass before the pass as Wenger put it, was a term he came up with to defend Hleb uselessness in front of goal, it’s a nonsense term used by people to defend underperforming players. The pre-assist is just a pass, just as a pre-pre assist is or pre-pre-pre-assist is. No one talks about Cech’s 10 yard pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-assist to Mertesacker because it would rightly be called bullshit. Do i expect a professional footballer to be able to pass to his team mate? Yes i do. An assist on the other hand show’s a players ability to get… Read more »

Ben

Using your logic here, then an assist “is just a pass to a better player” so they can score it. Every pass on a pitch should be applauded, they’re playing against some of the best players in the world.

Watching a game must be very dull for you.

Supertom's Outside Foot

How about a nice, well-timed through ball from Alexis to Monreal then he crosses it to Giroud, boom, goal?

That through ball is a pre-assist that is not quite just some pass to someone who’s better than you.

John C

I’m going to explain this once, Arsenal on average make 579 passes per match and score on average 1.9 goals per match that means only 0.33% of all our passes are potential assists. Arsenal also have on average 19.2 shot on goal per match, lets assume each shot has an assister and a pre-assister, that means 3.3% of all our passes are potential pre-assists, thats a factor of 10 more frequent. SO FOR EVERY ACUALT ASSIST THERE ARE 10 POTENTIAL PRE-ASSISTS!!! I will qualify this by saying this by saying there is a degree of speculation and assumption that our… Read more »

I agree. I think the main difference between the Ramsey that so many people didn’t like and the Ramsey that every loved is that he got shots on target and consequently, goals. Otherwise the same hardworking, talented player. His lack of accuracy can be maddening but otherwise he is excellent.

Goonslinger

You’re are entitled to your opinion of course; but what a stupid thing to say.

Arseblood

Maybe his performance will the Ox a big kick up the arse too! Tracking back and not giving the ball away in dangerous positions is a good thing!

SB

Have we found the New Romford Pele?!

I know Ox is rated very highly and this well be his break-through year. However his performance during the season hasn’t been setting it ablaze.

If Campbell has a similar steady performance in the next couple of games, including the one against Bayern, then Campbell will have a fight on his hands.

Having said that, Alexis would also need a rest at somepoint (may have to be chained to the subs bench). So there will be enough opportunities for both.

Paul

An upgrade to the Ox was what I was hoping for, and imo we got it! Well done Joel!
Dare I say it, the team looks stronger with him…?
COYG!

Ferngunner

Okay people need to relax.

Yacine

I think people are as relaxed as they’ve ever been. This team has an aura of serenity about it right now, especially in contrast with the rest of the Premier League – to some degree, even from the Man City camp. (Though Leicester fans seem to be enjoying themselves a bit…) Perhaps you read the argument as, “the starting XI is stronger with him.” But I don’t think that anyone can realistically make such an argument. For one, it’s a bit difficult to gauge, especially when the whole team is performing well; second of all, Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain… Read more »

Ramsey is our best player in that position. There’s a reason Arsene played him there over the Ox or Campbell and it isn’t because Arsene is stupid. Ramsey interchanges with ozil very effectively, he passes the ball well, he has a limitless engine, he tracks back excellently, he makes good runs into the box. He isn’t scoring recently but that just means he isn’t scoring, it doens’t mean the rest of his game isn’t top-notch. Campbell didn’t give the ball away in bad areas, he did track back, and he did finish. But he doesn’t pass the ball particularly well,… Read more »

Zyrth

Agree with everything you’ve said but you have to admit, Campbell is both young and raw. Give him time, Arsene will work his magic on Joel and improve his overall game, passing included.

But yeah, what you said. Fully agree that Ramsey is a better fit for us in the team, hence his name is penned on the right wing first. Well, when he plays, its more B2B anyway, that RW is just a placeholder for Aaron. But in that, he makes space for Mesut to drift into, which is all good.

KwameBK

Let’s give him 4 games or more and see if Ramsey can get that spot back. What Joel gives us is someone who can shield the ball well and who can shoot on sight. Very different from all our usual players who all seem to want to pass and pass.

KenaGooner

Happy for Campblell..may he score the winner against Bayern and become a instant legend.

Paul

I hope Campbell has a good game as well…;-)

Oor Wullie

Best ever Arsenal player.

Paul

I have to admit I posted on here a week or so ago, that I thought Campbell would come good for us….at about the same time that “Nelson got his eye back”,,,,ooops!

elkieno

Yes! very happy for him, He played well, had some moments where communication or ‘automatisms’ need to improve but worked hard, got goal etc, excellent.. Can he do a Coq? Was he better than Ox would have been?
Campbell also has plenty of European experience..

jimbo1

I thought he added to the team rather than weakening it. He has good close control, runs well with the ball and adds a real goal threat when he cuts inside to shoot on his left foot. I am not sure the Ox would have done any better.

Magneto

I also thought that Campbell added to the team.

There is something about his skill set and being left footed that
brought a new dimension to our attacking play.

If Campbell continues to get a run in the team, and is given time to get
on the same wavelengths with the rest of the first team players, in order
to improve both combination play and his decision making too, then exciting
times may lay ahead, for him and the mighty Arsenal.

eternalflamini

Jeans of all people made an important pointgoal on MOTD saying that Campbell’s instinct for goal gives us another dimension. Sometimes having so many creative players means there is a lot of pressure on our goal scorers Alexis and Giroud. Hopefully this helps the balance of the team.

Paul

I bet you are gutted with “Jeans” and “pointgoal”? 🙂

eternalflamini

Have you noticed how “autocorrect” is the one word it won’t autocorrect?

Fatboy Gooner

Congratulations to Campbell on his first goal for Arsenal, Long may it continue!

Great 2nd half performance from our boy’s!
Swansea have been a bit of a boggie team, So that was an excellent result,
Next up….. Munich!
COYG!!

Paul

The Swans sure do like to dance!! 🙂

Paul

Blame it on the bogie? I’ll get my coat….

Michael

I still remember his first good goal for the Emirates Cup, but this one is official now.

Rip Van's Winkel

I’d like to call him Naomi as he is such a model professional…cloakroom?

DJ

yesss!

Lass

A really positive performance from the lad. He was always looking for ways to get a shot at the goal which is nice to see as usually wenger plays a right-footed player in that wing so they seldom get the chance to cut inside and take a shot. Could have released the ball a bit earlier at times but he will improve with games. The time and amount of matches in a technical team like Villareal seems to have paid off, he looks so much better than a year ago. Also it would be great if this would give an… Read more »

Look how happy Cazorla is. Ledge.

I know his words are cliche but I really like what he’s saying. Fingers crossed he turns out to be special.

assistantref

Cazorla may be the most likable footballer ever. What a great guy.

GunnerTan

I’ve got a strange feeling that this guy is going to take his chance and make that RW position his like Bellerin & Coquelin did… Arsenal have produced “YET” another young and promising player with super work rate and not injury prone playing in the first team.. By far the best player in the 1st half against Swansea… You deserve it Joel Campbell… Score against Bayern & Sp**s and make that position son

dgaj

High work rate. Not profligate with the ball. And a good finish.

This kids checks out. Hope he keeps it up.

suker4punishment

really happy for the lad! I’m glad that he scored that goal, must done him a world of good, like a huge shot of vitamin C. I hope he takes the next few games by the scruff of the neck and gives wenger something of a selection headache, and that’s a good headache to have.

nijjy

i watched the third goal again. it made me think, ‘how the hell did that pass from ozil reach campbell on the far side through a crowd of swansea defenders who tried to intercept in vain’. i mean the speed of thought and vision of ozil and the accuracy of his pass when so many arsenal players were demanding the ball. but his decision to pass to campbell, i mean wow! my favorite playmaker will always be riquelme although he suffered at the hands of arsenal. i know ozil is a different type of player. but the nonchalant and seemingly… Read more »

DB10

I thought the pass was meant for santi. Just deflect to Campbell

Zyrth

Take another look at the replay. I was watching Ozil’s eyes the whole time, and all he bothered was looking right into Campbell’s eyes. He knows Campbell is driving in and with space too, hence he decided he was gonna assist Campbell.

Chilli

Campbell was good today and I was always thinking he would come good for us eventually. Didn’t aggree with Mr Blogs analysis of Campbell’s previous game, as I thought they were many worse performances accross the whole team against Sheffield. I also did not feel nervous about Campbell as a starter against Swansea. Mabye we should not judge palyers as quickly and give them time, hence Campbell needs to kick on and keep doing his thing: work ‘ard. He is neither as bad as some make him out to be nor is he the new Coq, yet. He can be… Read more »

santori

Lets not get carried away by Campbell. OTOH, I’m not sure what some people watch. They tend to have pre-conceived ideas. Campbell’s movement and use of the ball throughout the game was very good. He knows how to hold onto the ball and distribute it. His industry was also superb. Yet he would get a lower rating than some other players. This is endemic with the way many people view players. They seem to have an inbuilt bias which amplifies the faults where it covers the errors of their favorites. Bellerin was outstanding with his two last ditch tackles and… Read more »

Twanny

Campbell is a pretty decent player, proud and determined. I hope Wenger plays him often enough to help him get into the groove.

Tommy Caton

Let’s be honest, the Ox just isn’t good enough at this level. If he was from Costa Rica instead of England, no one would be making excuses for him or attributing his lack of effort, poor first touch and bad decision making to ‘trying too hard’. Campbell today was a significant upgrade in every way.

dholio

Arseblog had to eat crow and did a u turn on his opinion of Coq when he got his chance last season. I really hope Blogs will have to do the same with Campbell this season. To be fair, Blogs gave credit to Campbell for his performance vs the Swans. This was my 1st look at Campbell for some time now and I was quite impressed with his back Tracking and defensive responsibilities. There always seemed to be this fella in a gold shirt with pink boots popping up and breaking up a play or be there for a quick… Read more »

Dan Hunter

All I have heard Arsenal fans say until now is Joel Campbell is absolute crap, needs to be sold etc etc. He scores one goal and suddenly he’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Cas

But I don’t like sliced bread 🙁

Arsepedant

Funny how that happens, isn’t it? I’ll admit to being one of those who had absolutely no faith in Campbell going into the weekend, and I’m quite happy to have been (at least temporarily) proven wrong. Campbell showed more in that one match than he has in all his previous appearances for us put together. But let’s not get carried away just yet. If he can put in a couple of good shifts against Bayern and Spurms, then we can start calling him the new Coq. I have to say, after his performance against Swansea, I am suddenly a whole… Read more »

It’s early days of course but the most exciting thing was that after all the angst and soul searching about how to deal with the latest Arsenal injury crisis we bring in our seventh choice forward and it was absolutely fine…. Really good omen – COYG!!

Arsepedant

Yeah, it kind of shuts up all those idiots who say we have no depth, doesn’t it?

Mark

Glad he is finally getting a chance, definitely needs some consecutive games to get into the flow of it at this level, but finally has that opportunity. Once Walcott, Chamberlin and Ramsey come back going to be tough for him to find time so has to do it now. Who would ever have thought we’d have to go so deep in one position with six people that play it ahead of him injured (Ramsey, Wilshere, Chamberlin, Welbeck, Walcott and even Rosicky).

CJ

Majority of people slagging off Campbell a few days ago and now all of a sudden he’s an amazing footballer. Some fans are really infuriatingly fickle.

On the other hand, it was absolutely heartwarming to see how the entire team was over the moon when Joel scored. Just goes to show the oneness that is in the team at the moment.

We should have more faith in these guys, even though we’ve been disappointed, time and time again, in the past. And will, undoubtedly, be in the future, too.

Arsepedant

I disagree with the term “fickle”. Five days ago I was one of those with no faith in Campbell, and I think it was justified – prior to the Swansea match he’d shown us precisely nothing. Now he’s gone and had a fantastic match, contributed at both ends of the pitch, and scored a wonderful goal. This makes me very happy. Being surprised by this doesn’t make me fickle, it makes me proven wrong. That’s all. I think our entire fanbase was over the moon when Campbell scored. It capped a near perfect game for him. But let’s keep it… Read more »

I definitely noticed how the established first teamers celebrated with him and congratulated him. He is obviously well liked, and that can only be a good thing.

In fact it has been notable this season how much more the squad congratulates one another and credits one another for assists and making plays happen. This makes me really happy.

Frankie

I would consider Montero a quality signing…. He would be a great understudy for Alexis. He always causes us trouble on a consistent basis. Would be worth a cheeky £25 million bid in January.

Come on Arsene make it happen

Sir Chips

I really like it when he controls the ball with his studs, and backs that big costa rican junk into the defender keeping him at bay. I do love a good shielder of the ball.

weswakweli

That picture…. Santi is genuinely delirious…!!!…!!!
