Is it Paco Rabanne? Aramis? Old Spice? Aqua Velva? No, what smells so nice is Joel Campbell, with his recent form impressing Arsene Wenger.
The Arsenal manager has praised the Costa Rican for his recent performances having had his best run in the team since his arrival due to the injury crisis on the right hand side. He’s got his first Arsenal goal, the third in the 3-0 win over Swansea, and on Tuesday he chipped in with an assist after a clever through ball to Alexis Sanchez.
Wenger admits it’s not easy for a player who normally doesn’t play much to make an impact, and has spoken about his contribution in recent weeks.
“When you are a player that never gets a chance and then you come in and get 90 minutes throughout October and November you have to show that you are in this team and that is not easy,” he said.
“When you look at his overall performances, you cannot say that he has not done well. Overall his contribution has been great.
“This season I didn’t want to loan him out because he has a genuine team attitude and he’s a fighter,” he continued. “What you want from him is to bring more offensively when he plays.
“Recently he has shown that when he is confident he can produce the offensive quality and also be reliable with his team attitude.
“He’s a fighter so that’s great for us. I smelt something with him that is very interesting. He’s creative.
“I could see that but the creativity is linked with the confidence. You open your eyes when you feel really free to take the initiative.”
Campbell is likely to drop to the bench today with the return of Aaron Ramsey, but perhaps recent performances have shown he can make an impact from the bench if need be.
60% of the time he works every time.
“60% of the time he works every time.”
They’ve done studies, you know.
But if Campbell’s illegal in nine countries, it could pose a problem with Champions League travel one day. That might explain the trouble he had getting permission to play in England.
It’s quite pungent, it stings the nostrils
That miss v West Brom though.
I can recall Giroud, Walcott and Ramsey missing much easier chances this season, even others… Give him a break.
I said (here, too) that I though that same miss might mean the end of his Arsenal career, but his performance in the very next game just goes to show you that you can’t write a player off based on one game.
The scent.It’s his left foot.
Playing time and growing confidence has made many a player blossom into screaming panthers
and some into crawling ones…
Love Arsene but can’t help feeling his faith in Campbell is a bit misplaced. I’m very happy to be proved wrong but I haven’t seen much evidence that he’s good enough to be a good long-term squad player for us. Although it’s possible he’s just saying these things to make Joel believe in himself more, I dunno.
For a sixth choice right winger I think he’s done alright
IMHO,he is much better than ox this season.
We’re you watching against Zagreb? He was one of our best players. If that isn’t evidence i dont know what is. Definitely didn’t look out of place. If he can produce those performances regularly we have quite a decent player on our hands.
Coq, Rambo, Bellerin are just some recent examples of Arsene knows.
Christ, some people inability to learn is astounding. Did you see evidence that Song or Coq we’re good enough to be good long term squad players after a couple of first team appearances? What about Bellerin away to Dortmund? Monreal look like a quality player when he first arrived?
Let’s cut the lad some slack. He’s come in to the team with Ramsey Ox and Theo injured. That is squad depth if a guy like Campbell can come in 4th choice and do a decent job. He works his bollocks off for the cause and I for one wouldn’t knock an Arsenal player who does that.
Arsene caught of whiff of pheromones. A gush of dopamine… never mind. infact strike that.
football aside, he has some crazy looking eyes.
If he does come good his song should be “Jo..ellll, Jo…ellll to the tune of Noel Noel…just a thought at this festive time of year…
That’s already hus song…
I knew it was a good one…ooops!
Come on you gunners blow Norwich City away!!!
Is that another fart joke? 😉
800k-a-week and I’m yours. Think about it….
I really hope Ramsey doesn’t come straight back into the team as that will send completely the wrong message. Ramseys got to earn his place back in the side as I don’t think Campbell’s done any worse than he has since he’s been in the team.
Great job for Joel….. I rate him so much
I would like to see Ramsey split the game with Campbell. That wold decrease the chance of Ramsey reinjuring his delicate hamstring after just coming back, and will give us a chance to get a better look at Campbell.
I want Joel to come good, but I think this is Arsene trying to inject confidence into Joel rather than praising actual performance.
For example, have you ever seen the lad make a right-footed cross into the box? Me neither, and it’s rather limiting for a guy typically playing on the right wing, no?
I didn’t think he did quite as much as he could last game and was a bit flat.
But he protects the ball very well and uses it wisely.
Likely along with Ox will have a pivotal role forthcoming showdown with Olympiakos (A team he should know well)
IMO Campbell, Ox and Ramsey are on par for the RW berth when Alexis is it. All give different attributes.
However with Santi likely also out, Ramsey is prob going to sit next to Flamini so Ox will go RW and Campbell switch LW.
