Arsene Wenger has revealed that Santi Cazorla has undergone knee surgery after rupturing his knee ligaments last weekend against Norwich.
The midfielder was injured in a clash with Gary O’Neil early in the second half, and after scans showed damage the Spanish international was keen to have the problem sorted as quickly as possible.
Speaking after the win over Sunderland, Wenger said, “The surgery has now happened. It’s not the season. It is at least three months, maybe four.
“Santi wanted to have a chance to come back quickly so he didn’t want to last too long for 25 opinions. He decided to go straight away.
“The guy said, ‘Look, it’s a clear case – it’s a rupture of the external knee ligament.’ And he said, ‘Okay, let’s do it straight away.’”
The hope is that he could be back in four months time, but as ever we have to take into account the time it takes for a player to come back to their best after such a traumatic injury.
Fingers crossed for him that his recovery goes as smoothly as possible. It’s hard not to fear that we won’t see him again this season, but let’s hope that’s not the case.
One of our best and most influential players.
Hope we see you back on the pitch soon Santi 🙁
Double f*ck
Cheer up, lad. It could always be worse!
Actually wait, no this is pretty bad.
Yeah, it could always be worse… we could NOT be only 2 points of the top of the table in a year when every other “top four” team is shitting the bed.
Don’t worry lads, he’ll be back in time to score the free kick winner at Wenbley again 🙂

A bit unrelated but I’ve always thought Cazorla’s recent penalty miss was caused by same shenanigan. Could be wrong though
I’ve always had that suspicion.
On a further unrelated note, there’s this wonderfully headlined link right at the top of that news story:

To which I can only respond “Well, maybe you should stop acting like one.”
As sad as this would be to see, is it possible Santi has played his last game in an Arsenal shirt? Everyone knows he wants to end his career in Spain, and he’s always said he’s focused on Arsenal, but I wouldn’t begrudge him if he wanted to leave this summer, especially if Ramsey and Wilshere could work in tandem to replace him. Perhaps too big of a risk to count on that because of past injuries. If that’s the case, I hope Wenger buys a DM in January to replace Flam and Arteta for next season, and a winger… Read more »
Does anyone know which ligament exactly they’re referring to?
We actually need to sign two midfielders in January don’t we.
Kim? Is… is that you Kim?
2?
A massive DM would be nice. – That’s it.
But the best position of AR and JW are exactly the same where we lost Santi. (not to mention TR)
As some posters have pointed out we need someone who controls the tempo of the game. Ramsey, Flamini, both are not best known for that. Neither is Coquelin. The two players who are really good at this is Cazorla and Arteta. That’s why the Coqzorla axis works wonders as they complement each other nicely. With Ramsey now taking the role the more offensive CM we need a midfielder who can both defend and control the game, keeping possession when we’re losing a bit of control and reset things. In 2013/2014, Ramsey had Arteta to do this and we can all… Read more »
I agree with you in principle, but I think Ramsey and Wilshere both have to have the maturity and intelligence by now to stay focused and disciplined. If we would by somebody else – our team balance (and their future progress) would suffer. For example: Ramsey should cotinue to play on the right while we are full of wingers… Or we should drop him and Wilshere either from the starting XI for long spells… So as I think their future are obviously in the middle – I think it would be luxurious and potentially destructive to buy somebody else to… Read more »
While i get your point i think your wrong, since we have a midfield where almost every player is injury prone, except maybe coq and carz… Oh wait?Ramsey n wilshire cannot be relied upon to stay fit for the rest of the season, and even if they did their discipline is ifs n buts its not guaranteed, nor should it be since neither are natural DMs. They havent had the time together on the pitch to state that the team balance wil be effected. As for their futures, they, epscially wilshire, will have to stay fit enough to fight for theirs.… Read more »
Lol kante (dm) vardy and mahrez have been uber consistent for leicester.. Could be worth a punt for one or two of them in jan for the right price.
God, I really hope we don’t do that, and that Leicester refuse adamantly if anyone else tries it as well. I know football is all about money these days, but I would find it incredibly said if Leicester were prepared to sell out their title challenge midway through the season.
Thought wilsheres was treatment bed
Well, shit.
Fuck the Europa League.
Hopefully Santi will be back to his best by the time of Arsenal’s first Champions League final in 10 years.
get well Mighty Mouse! I’ve only been a serious footy fan for maybe 15-20 years, but I’ve never seen a player so gifted with both feet, especially when dribbling. I remember when he came to Arsenal, no one was really sure which was his favourite foot.
And we’re STILL not sure! 🙂 Get well soon, Santiago Cazorla Gonzalez.
Heal swiftly and well, come back healthy and strong, and return when you can!
Get well soon,bruh
Hard as nails, Santi. Played a whole half with that. Love him. Think he’s very underrated.
Indeed. Imagine how the press would fawn over him if he were English…
Kind of glad he went for the surgery immediately.. now at least we have a chance that he would be back by March end or April… Better than the case of say someone like Welbeck where we waited too long to find out what the problem was and now will be absent for close to a year..
welbeck and for that matter rosicky (both have same injury) did not wait to find out what was wrong, the injury was quickly diagnosed for both of them, the correct course of treatment for a bruised bone is immobilize it and rest, only if this fails to cure the problem should an operation be done, and that is exactly what happened with both players.
Is it selfish of me to think this might prevent Spain from calling him to the Euros ?
The selfishness would be being happy he gets a rest over the summer of course
I would suggest that santi went so quick for the operation is cos he wants the best chance of making the Spain squad for the Euros
Yeah I know but not being selected isnt beyond the realm of possibility as they have plenty of midfielders to choose from, maybe common sense will prevail for once lol
If we’re still in the title race by Feb, surely we’ll be in with a shout with all the guys due to come back?
Yeah that would be ideal. However the reality (as much as we all wish otherwise) will be a different bunch of players will be injured.
It would be better to assume we wouldn’t have a full squad and plan accordingly. Obviously, which area will be hit next can’t be guessed. However any area we take a gamble on, usually does get hit!
He is 30 with a cruciate ligament tear, post sutgery .
I have seen a couple of this in my time, I pray for an amazing recovery for him
Because most players his age are never the same upon return.
Maybe, but his game nowadays revolves more around outstanding ball retention rather than speed across the pitch. I hope he’ll be fine.
This is a medial collateral ligament tear, not an anterior cruciate ligament tear (what Walcott had).
Different healing times. This one shouldn’t affect his overall ability.
GET WELL SOON SANTI!!!
On the other hand this will give Ramsey a chance to play in his favoured central position where I believe he is pretty decent if he manages to balance his defensive duties with his desire to be in the box. Moreover, this gives Ox the opportunity to cement the right side midfield place..but then again he is worryingly off form and his body language against Sunderland resembled a defeated man lacking confidence. At the minute I would put Campbell ahead of him.
We need Jack to get fit and find form quickly. He can play deep with Coquelin leaving Ramsey to play further up the pitch.
We’ve needed Jack fit for years now. If he comes back and lasts the rest of the season, I’d be surprised.
Oh injury gods
Why do you torment us so?
You hate smiles, no?
The supreme deity in the pantheon, is the Ian Dury God, patron saint of the afflicted genius.
I have made offerings to him by rhythmically self-flagellating, listening to my Little Richard,
whilst having copious sex, high on skunk.
Fingers crossed…
I hope you listen to Bob Marley as well …
Love Bob, but Ian stipulated sex and drugs and rock and roll are very good indeed.
Who am I to disagree?
*smiling
Then you have a haiku…
Let’s try and look at the positives…. Walcott, Ox and Gibbs have all returned from injury and reports Sanchez could be back as early as two weeks time… Maybe a bit pessimistic but I’d be happy to see him by New Year. The only good thing to possibly come out of these Santi-Coq injuries is that it could force Wenger into the transfer market to buy someone top class like Bender or Carvalho. Arsenal are in a good position in the league. Taking our history into account we’re normally about six or seventh about this time of year so let’s… Read more »
There needs to be root and branch investigation into the injury situation. This simply can’t be bad luck or coincidence. Spend whatever money it takes to find out what is causing the injuries and fix it!
Official report:
The unrelenting schedule, unpunished physicality, and unmatched pace of the Premier league is undoubtedly the root cause of player injuries.
My invoice is en route.
But seriously, the vast majority of our injuries right now are contact or freak twists. That’s from physicality or getting stuck in a dodgy pitch.
I feel Santi’s injury is a combination of muscle fatigue and one bad collision. He was off form for a few games, and I think he was simply fatigued. Needed a rest because his body was not responding at full capacity. That affected his form and also made him susceptible to injury. And then he got into one physical situation and it happened.
He was dizzy during the spurs game ffs. Overplayed into injury? Hasn’t this happened to all of us, when we are doing something physically taxing and it’s the final effort that ends up hurting you somewhere?
Have to agree, the major reason we get a lot of injuries is wenger doesn’t seem to believe in squad rotation. He only seems to rotate when forced into it (injuries etc) except for cup games. Both cazola and sanchez injuries, maybe even coqs could have been prevented. The question we should be asking is, why doesn’t he rotate? Maybe he thinks it messes with team cohesion, or maybe he doesn’t think the squad is good enough, in which case why didnt he strengthen in the summer?
We badly need a midfielder in january. go for some one like lars bender, creative yet so robust. Otherwise we could kiss the title dream good bye.
We will defo need to keep an eye out in Jan for someone who can come in to eventually replace Arteta/Rosicky but also back up/supercede Flamini and cover/option for Ramsey.
Adrien Rabot at PSG apparently not happy with opportunities and looking for a loan move.
Could be the sort of player we need who can cover DM if need be but more crucially provide the link/Santi role.
Worth a loan to find out surely.
Carzola’s season is pretty much done, 4 months puts him to April and then he’s not going to come straight into the team as will take time to get back in shape and form. By the time he comes back hopefully we will have a healthy squad with plenty of midfield options at that point. I do hope he comes back on the short end and can contribute again as he is one of my favorite players and adds much to the squad. The big question will be what Wenger will do (or not do) in the Jan market. We… Read more »
Ca-zor-la. Not Carzola, CAZORLA. Figure it out.
O santi cazorla!
Get well soon. Its absolutely amazing how he adapted to the deep lying role.
Maybe the club should release some pictures of home smiling to liften our spirits
We lost cazorla, but Owen Goalzalez is back
Hoping for that speedy recovery
get well, you bundle of endless skillful mirth.
Get well soon Santi.
Will miss your quick thinking, twinkle feet and your board smile
Get well soon Santi. I have to say i am angry and disappointed that he was allowed to play the whole second half with such a serious injury when we had 2 substitutions left when it happened. Probably made it worse. Our medical team sucks!!!
Oh Santi Cazorla
Come back stronger!
What’s with the usual 3 weeks at Arsenal turning into the usual 3 months?
Do we have any midfielders at Charlton to call on?
We should be looking at players like gündoğan,isco, bender brothers, sergi samper, calhanoglu, k.asamoah.
I really miss watching a fit about diaby play and boss the midfield. Hope wenger manages to find some player like him because that is the exact type arsenal need in the middle.
On an unrelated topic, BBC Sport published an article today on Beckham’s support for the World Cup 2022 staying in Qatar. Funnily enough, every article published previously by the BBC mentioning Qatar and the World Cup always includes the bribe scandal, the slave labour and the actual deaths of workers on site. The BBC failed to include those last two this time. Whatever could the reason be?
We are looking first and foremost at replacing Arteta-Rosicky. Thereafter in a season or two down, Santi will need to be replaced too considering age. Likely both he and Flamini will start to take a retiring role. Flamini is worth keeping for a season or two as a utility back up with good experience. Santi will slowly let in a succesor. This could be Ramsey who looks better in the deeper midfield role but we could also bring in someone from market to eventually back up Coquelin and provide a succesor to Santi. Someone like Illaramendi would be useful both… Read more »
