Arsenal: Cech, Bellerin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Flamini, Ramsey, Campbell, Walcott, Ozil, Giroud
Subs: Ospina, Gibbs, Chambers, Debuchy, Gabriel, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Iwobi

Olivier Giroud’s first Arsenal hat-trick saw Olympiacos defeated 3-0 in Athens as the Gunners secured safe passage from the Champions League group stage for a 16th consecutive season.
After a rocky European campaign Arsene Wenger’s men knew they had to win in Greece and delivered a pitch-perfect performance against the dirge of the enthusiastic home support. Giroud netted with his head to give the visitors a first half lead then polished off fine work by Joel Campbell to double Arsenal’s advantage just after the break. The Frenchman then completed a memorable night from the spot sending keeper Ricardo the wrong way and the Gunners into Monday’s knockout round draw.
Pre-game
Having given Theo Walcott a half hour run out against Sunderland, Arsene Wenger opted to start the England international at the expense of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The boss noted before kick-off that neither player currently has 90-minutes in their legs. The rest of the team was made up by those who featured on Saturday, although there was a small doubt about Mesut Ozil. Jeff Reine-Adelaide, who travelled with the first team squad, had been expected to be on the bench only for Alex Iwobi to take his place.
First half
Arsenal had been expected to burst out of the blocks in search of an early goal but it was Olympiakos who looked the more dangerous in the opening stages.
The Greeks mounted repeated attacks on Hector Bellerin’s flank as they looked to get behind the defence with pace, however, it wasn’t until the 19th minute that they mustered a shot at goal; Pardo firing high and wide from the edge of the area.
Having done little in the Olympiakos half Arsenal had two chances to break the deadlock in the space of a minute. First Flamini had an effort deflected on to the bar after great work down the right by Campbell, then Giroud tested keeper Ricardo with a close range header.
Four minutes later the Gunners did get their goal. An unbelievably good pass by Ozil took out four men to find Ramsey inside the left channel and with his left foot the Welshman delivered a perfect cross that Giroud headed just inside Ricardo’s near post. The replay suggests the keeper probably should have done better – the ball appeared to come off his head on the way in – but our handsome Frenchman didn’t care as he wheeled away to celebrate his third in this season’s competition. (1-0)
Arsenal continued to grow in confidence in the aftermath of their opener with Theo Walcott coming to the fore. Not only did he put a shift in at the back he was also quick to burst forward to provide support for Giroud. One such break on 37 minutes saw the England striker fire just wide from the edge of the box after a good run.
Against the backdrop of incessant enthusiasm from the home crowd Olympiacos looked to regain momentum. Laurent Koscielny did well to clear a dangerous cross just over the bar and Cech dealt with a couple of speculative efforts.
Second half
Within a minute of the restart it looked as though Arsenal’s injury crisis was about to worsen. Having lost his footing making a clearance Olivier Giroud went down in real pain clutching his ankle. The striker looked a certainty to go off as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was called from the bench, however, after limping to the touchline he decided he was fit to continue.
Amazingly, within 30 seconds Giroud had bagged his second of the night. The plaudits though belong to Joel Campbell for his fantastic assist. It wasn’t quite Bergkamp vs Juventus, but it wasn’t far off.
Controlling a lofted Ozil ball with aplomb the Costa Rican twisted around his marker in the box, took a moment to reflect with a drag back, then flicked the ball inside three defenders for Giroud who calmly finished first time with his left foot. It was the perfect start to the second half. (2-0)
It was far from plain sailing though for the Gunners. After Walcott squandered a chance to grab a vital third, Cech had to parry a decent effort over the bar from Fortounis and get down low to deny Pajtim Kasami. In between, Per Mertesacker made a fantastic last-ditch challenge to deny a certain a certain goal.
There was a real grit and determination about the Gunners who looked hell bent on getting the win that would secure safe passage to the knockout stages at the expense of their hosts.
That feat was all but sealed on 66 minutes as Giroud completed his first Arsenal hat-trick from the spot. Nacho Monreal’s low shot was blocked by the hand of Omar Elabdellaoui and after the ref pointed for a penalty the Frenchman calmly sent Ricardo the wrong way. Finally, the home support was dampened. (3-0)
The Gunners coasted through the final third of the game with Flamini and Ramsey sponging the tentative forays of their Olympiacos peers and Campbell and Ozil combining well to mount the occasional attack. Gibbs, Chambers and Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced Walcott, Giroud and Campbell in the closing stages; the latter receiving a standing ovation from both sets of supporters after a great showing.
It was a tremendous performance from the boys who’ve really defied the odds to qualify after those horrendous earlier defeats to Olympiacos and Dinamo Zagreb. Plaudits all round.
I promised myself I would buy the 3rd kit if we pulled this of…. So I have mixed feelings about this result! No but seriously great game!
Guess we finally have our “world-class” striker!
Always been a huge fan of OG! I’m really happy for him and the team.
Real, barca, Wolfsburg, zenit, and athletico should fear drawing us. Ok, maybe not barca, haha.
What a performance!!!! We should all apologise to the third kit.#YaGunnersYa
I think this is why Akers came out to greet Giroud when the latter came off. He was basically saying, “See? You can have a MOTM game in the shit shirt I gave you!”
Proud of our lads.
What a bunch of diving cunts Olympiacos are. They can go back farming on that pitch, glad nobody got hurt.
As Joel Campbell contemplates his stunning assist on a momentous Champions League victory for Arsenal, a small part of him wishes he’s got out while he could.
He was so good tonight. And that assist. Wow. It’s not just the skill. It’s the awareness. And he ran and ran and chased and chased all night. Love it. Wonder if he’ll be this year’s Coquelin?
I don’t see Campbell looking up for most of his through balls. He’s pretty amazing with his awareness!
cant stop watching it! so good
Me too. That Ozil pass to Ramsey…beautiful! So glad we have the German wizard – worth every penny I think we can all agree!
Buy it. Then burn it in a ritual sacrifice.
It’s your duty.
How extremely fucking cool was Campbell in the box for his assist.
I am absolutely delighted to admit that I got my assessment of Joel Campbell horribly wrong.
Well played lad.
How good was he ! Ox has his work cut out for him
i agree, …boy!, what a performance from campbell and imo, and he is getting better and better, with each game.
Welcome back home joel and this time, with this type of performance?you are definitely staying!
Brilliant ballsy performance. Special mention Campbell, giroud, ozil and monreal.ox definitely has his work cut out, but arsene certainly isn’t helping. He could have brought him on by 75-80 mins when the game was in the bag, probably could have taken off ozil who is now the most vital and irreplaceable cog, and seriously at risk of burn out. One more thing,I believe our best option at cdm till coq returns would be kos. Has pace, reading of the game, tidy in possession, and decent at launching attacks.
Rubbish! Kos is best where he is. Flamini played well and once he and Ramsey get a run, he will be fine. Taking Kos as a DM means Arsenal loses its best defender.
As for protecting Özil, he played well and knows how to avoid trouble. Gibbs for Walcott was the right substation and protecting Giroud was more important than replacing Özil.
Clearly you don’t like Wenger. But don’t let your prejudice get the better of your judgement.
“But don’t let your prejudice get the better of your judgement.”
heh
On the webbernets? heh!
I don’t really know what to make of Gibbs substations (heh I like that now) anymore. Seeing him on the bench now makes me go ‘Behold, our secret weapon – our currently second-choice leftback for the goal!’
It did work once.
The last part of your comment gets you a down-vote.
I don’t agree with the comments whatsoever but they shouldn’t be blocked from view. There isn’t any malic in what this guy is saying he is just making a point.
I think the thumbs down are because it’s a really bad idea!
Thank you Tommygun.I was beginning to wonder if I had uttered something abominable to be shut out. I just wanted to make a few tactical suggestions. It’s posted exactly for discussion and opinions. But I get the feeling having views differing from general consensus is blasphemy here.
People tend to downvote what they disagree with, plenty of room for opinion and debate. Don’t take it personally, and please feel free to keep contributing.
It is a really bad idea but it shouldn’t be hidden from view because of it getting a certain number of thumbs down – that is the point I am making. Do Arseblog not have any control over whether a comment is hidden from view? People should be able to post their views even if others don’t like their points as long as they are not offensive, bigoted etc. I appreciate it might make a bit more work for Arseblog but not loads.
I think it’s part of the comment thumb system, but I’ve never really thought of turning it off until you said it. You make a good point.
I’ll look into it.
Please do. I always, and I mean ALWAYS, click on “click here to see comment” anyway.
Yep, he’s really growing. I guess he really did need a run of games in the team.
Another solid performance.
You mean just like Debuchy.
I don’t think you can equate young and old, inexperience and experienced, quite like that. If anything, the more senior one should learn something from the patience and hard work of the more junior one.
Absolutely! He’s no Sanchez but he is very effective and efficient in what he does. Always gives in his 100%. Some of us were a little too quick to write him off after the sheffield game.
And big shoutout to Monreal and koscielny who have been consistency personified.
I got my assessment of Savage wrong too. He was actually very good today!
What a performance by everyone and especially Joel. Showing everyone what it means to be a winger: hard work, defence and blistering attack
Roy Keane is a cunt
Savage was certainly quick to praise us. He continually called out those who question Giroud’s quality and Ozil’s work rate.
Me too!!!
And me. Just a month ago I was confidently stating that Campbell had absolutely no future with us. Since then, bar the West Brom match, he’s been brilliant. My hat is off to you Joel – you have made me eat my words. And I’m glad of it!
Step up you handsome French bastard. So well deserved, first hat-trick for the club when we couldn’t have needed it more, immense. The whole team was out of sight tonight. Just amazing considering the injury list. Campbell excellent too.
God I hope they realise how great they can be when they fight from the start and keep their nerve.
Triple is on!
Rip up the usual script – we won a must win game…comfortably, no player out injured during the game, no send offs…furthermore a penalty in our favour!
While Giroud will get the headlines, Kos had a wonderful game. Campbell is proving his worth, might even be the Coq of the season.
I didn’t have enough faith in Flamini but he has done the job till now.
Hope Ox and Walcott find form for the busy festive period.
That’s the way, Arsenal!!! Nothing wrong with the strip at all!
Very happy with that….and it was quite nice to see a striker taking the pens, and putting it away!! To think we had Cazorla, Wilshere, Welbeck and Alexis plus more injured. Great result. Hope we carry this winning run through festive period and beyond!! COYG (p.s congrats to Giroud on first afc hattrick! ???
So proud!
We’ve killed the kit curse!
Lol…
Beautiful Beautiful Giroud…….Man, you have to give it to give it to Campbell. He must have been talking to and taking tips from Coq on how to take chances. Well played. Am happy I hope you too are
Never in doubt.
except for the first 30 minutes, we looked a nervous wreck
I do not agree with your comment, not in the slightest….
More accurately, Olympiakos looked dangerous in the opening period
Giroud !!!!!!!!!!
Personally, I never expected for Koscielny to replace Vermaelen, Coq to replace Arteta, or Monreal to replace Gibbs.
So if Campbell wants to stake a claim for that right hand side, I’m all for it.
Got to say I chuckled when BT Sport announced the Sp*rs Europa league match at 70th minute
#COYG #JolCampbellsaGooner
That moment when you feel on top of the world……. Proud to be a gunner
We win everytime I miss the game. But sounds like Kos was a beast tonight!
By all means keep the trend going…
Yea, you may have to fall on your sword here i’m afraid dear boy!
That was just brilliant! Well done to the lads. Every single one put in a great shift. Delighted for Olivier. And Campbell was top notch I thought. Just so chuffed.
Olivier Giroud
Take a bow son
Anyone else think Robbie Savage was brown nosing Arsenal fans with his obvious praise for Ozil? “…such work rate, no one really notices…”.
Thanks Robbie but your still a numpty.
Anyone got anything to say to me?
I go now to the halls of my fathers, in who’s mighty company I shall not now feel ashamed.
Whose.
Normally I wouldn’t give a toss, but in a sentence like that, it’s like a filet mignon garnished with Spam.
It’s the damn auto correct…
Sure, sure. Always blame auto-correct. It’s never the user’s fault.
Glorious death.. King of Rohan..
Super Joely Campbell!
Joel fucking Campbell and Oli Giroud hitting back at the doubters in style. Wonderful team effort.
Bring on Barça 😉
Wow Joel!
Congrats to Olivier for his first Arsenal hattrick. Congrats to Joel for an amazing performance. Congrats to Arsenal for getting through to the next round.
PS: How the fuck did Flam not get sent off? Or even get a yellow card? He basically had more flying tackle fouls than the whole Olympiakos team combined!
I heard he donated a 1% interest in his company to the ref’s union.
it seems we FINALLY had a ref that has had it with diving cunts.
Yeah, I noticed that too. There were two challenges he made that I thought were certain bookings, and two others that were maybe’s. To be fair, though, I thought there were a lot of fouls by both sides that weren’t even whistled. I guess we just had a very lenient referee today. For which I am hugely grateful.
Olly will probably get the plaudits and justly so, but for me, Joel Campbell was MOTM.
Until he swapped wings, we were getting murdered down our right. He worked so hard to cover Bellerin. Once that outlet wasn’t an option for them they kind of had no other ideas. Sublime holdup play and pass for Girouds second too. Well played son.
My only gripe? Wenger running key players into the ground.. Again.
At 3-0 get Ozil and Giroud out of there. Their players were frustrated and snapping in to tackles late at that point, why risk it? That’s all.
Wonderful performance! So happy, Campbell was immense, Giroud was immense, Mesut was immense and everyone else wasn’t too shabby either! Excellent and the experienced players stood up, Mertesacker’s tackle in the second half was brilliant too, the last ditch. Sensational, ridiculously happy.
Joel Campbell though, undroppable at the moment, fair play to the lad for taking his chance. People criticising our players and team, sod off! They aren’t perfect but nights like tonight they’re showing the passion!
I said not Europa league…
Fatgooner knew we would fall short.
Actually he posted that he thought we would go through
I take us to win it 3-1.
http://news.arseblog.com/2015/12/giroud-were-ready-to-give-100/#li-comment-774638
Wtf?!? I missed that! Kit curse killed and Fatgooner positive all in one day?!? This is a special day. We’re gonna win the Champions League now for sure.
Fatgooner was positive we would win this one.
And props to Fatgooner, he was pretty much spot on. The part he got wrong was predicting we’ll bow out in the first elimination round. But we won’t. We go to at least the quarterfinals this year, maybe even the semis.
Robbie Savage had a blast!
Giroud is worldclass, punto final !
We’re through, that’s massive. It would never have been better to not qualify through to the knock-outs.
Personally hoping we draw Athletico in the last 16.
In order of best to worst, my hopes are Athletico, Zenit, Wolfsburg, Real, Barcelona. I REALLY hope it’s one of the first three. Too bad City and Chel$ki won their groups or we’d have had Juventus and Porto in the list of possibles, which would have given us much better odds of avoiding the Spanish giants.
Oh don’t get me wrong. Athletico are a great team, I just think that it would be a mouth-watering tie to look forward to and we haven’t played them yet under Simeone. Wolfsburg are an ordinary side who I think we definitely should beat if we draw them. Zenit would be next on my list but honestly I haven’t a breeze what they’re like. Naturally I’d rather avoid Real and Barca. I just think Athletico are strong enough that our guard wouldn’t be dropped against them a la Monaco, and yet at the top of our game they’re a team… Read more »
You know, after going through some of the later news articles and comments, I’ve changed my mind. I’d rather get Wolfsburg as my first choice. The return of TGSTEL!
It’s official Campbell is now both the new coquelin and Ozil. Take a bow son.
FUCKIN’ AHA!
Everyone connected with Arsenal football club take a bow…i always believed we’d make it but never with such a commanding performance against a team top of its league with a 100% record…we just blew them aside…bring on Barcelona,Real Madrid we’ve beaten them before we can do it again….I believe…!!
#Don’thavetoplaywithSp*rsandManU
What did I tell you?
That Wenger is a spent force??
3-1 but it’s 3-0. You lied to us fats
They should have had a penalty
That we should have bought a striker…
Well we should’ve…
Obviously, because winning 3-0 just isn’t enough.
Yeah because the season starts and ends on 12/9/2015.
yeaah!… you did, and we are all .glad you got it right…fatso the psychic
Never in Doubt…..
#YaGunnerYa
Campbell has most certainly cemented that right-wing position. The Coq of this season? How good was Giroud too tonight alongside Walcott? That competition really unleashes the beast in him!
Perfect chance to put ox in Cm again? Only if needed mind you, because on current form its Campbells position to lose….hardworking, tracks back, tackles, showed tonight he has an eye for a pass and he can score. Quietly confident we can quieten the doubters…go on and cement our place at top Of EPL and enjoy the rest of CL campaign…wherever that takes us. Were showing the right stuff…..#upwardspiral
Only one team from north London playing Thursday night football then! Forever in our shadow.
Joel Campbell, by far our best winger after Sanchez!
Olivier Giroud is not a “good” Striker, he is Great footballer!!! One of the best amongst Thierry, Dennis and Pires imho !!
I believe in miracles. Giroud, where are you from, you sexy thing!
FRANCE!
Tonight, Joel Campbell was Carzola+Sanchez+Messi wrapped together.
Hats off!
Would normally downvote for spelling CaZORla wrong yet again … but today is just too good a day for that!
Olivier Giroud, Joel Campbell, and Laurent Koscienly: Take a bow!
Now is hardly the time for archery!
Joel is proving that we never, ever should judge players without seeing them play at least a couple of games. Kos is as world class as it gets and I think it is time to put the Giroud debate to bed now. At least he did.
I think Alexis told Joel to cover him on the “be fucking everywhere front”
Wow Joel!..and chucked in an Ozil type assist!
I knew he was good *cough…
Joel Campbell is really excellent now that he is up to speed.
Koscielny; magnificent, Ozil, divine, Czech; clean sheet
Well done The Arsenal!
In the end it doesn’t matter that we lost our first 2 matches. We would’ve finished second because of the Bayern results. No regret, that was an exciting group stage campaign.
Didn’t watch the game but am happy Campbell played well. He must have played with real maturity. Ox must learn from him, though I think Ox is better in a Rosicky role. Also, Ox had played an important part this season with vital assists
Joel campbell standing ovation from both sets of fans. Says it all really.
Proud of the lad for stepping up over the past few weeks.
Injury crisis? What injury crisis.
That was the inaugural lecture from Prof. A master class…
Epic team performance and a truly heroic display from Giroud !! COYG
Nobody mentioned, except blog, about Özil passes leading to the assists leading to the first 2 goals. Especially the first one was….well simply out of this world.
It’s the sort of pass you make in FIFA because you’re sitting above the field looking at everyone from a bird’s eye view.
To be able to do that when you’re down in the trenches…man. What a player.
He was brilliant on FIFA 15 for me when I managed Sampdoria. FIFA knows!
… the weight of that pass …he got it spot on to the millimetre/milisecond… turf friction, wind speed…science…he is a jedi
