Mertesacker: goal will lift Welbeck

Per Mertesacker says Dat goal from Dat guy will provide the confidence boost needed after the England international missed 10 months with injury.

Having not played since last April, Danny Welbeck marked his return with a headed winner against Leicester yesterday, and the German is sure it will help him individually, and team now that he’s back in action after so long out.

““For Danny to go through a bad, injured period where he kept believing in himself, when everyone maybe doubted him, it was a great chance for him to come in and show he was ready to give everything for the team,” he said.

“He was always integrated into the team but when you feature on the pitch, give the team such a great goal and energy, it gives him a big lift.

“We are happy to have Danny now and a few others are not far away. We need our players – you could see that that makes a difference. We’re happy to have at least him back and there’s more coming back as well.”

“Also, that winner at the end gives you something. We hope that we stay focused on ourselves because how we defended in the first half was good. We limited them from countering and that was the important thing. We kept believing that we could score against them.”

Nice fan’s view of Welbeck’s goal here

absolute pandemonium when that went in yesterday, as charged and emotional a response as i think i’ve seen at the grove. it’s why i love the game and why all the pain and disappointment is worth it, moments like that. brilliant.

I think dat guy can emulate the improvement made by Sturridge when he moved to Liverpool. Genuinely excited by his hunger and ability to finish chances. He just needs consistency and confidence

Serendipity

I think he can be way better than Sturridge.

Exiledgooner

It certainly lifted me. In fact, it took three hours for the firemen to extract my head from the ceiling, it lifted me so much.

Adewale

congrats danny lets see your exploits against hull.

Me So Hornsey

I don’t think I’ve seen the Emirates jumping like that since Arshavin against Barcelona.

The build up, the drama, the tension, the release.

Magical moment.

totally agree! I remember I was so pumped up after we beat Barcelona that I just went outside and started running. I ended up running 8km on pure adrenalin, haha.

He is Well Beck Now!

The video is metal. Wish I was there.

It was a nerve wrecking experience yesterday. We won and that is all that matters. Now on to ManU. Let us win there and take them out of the top 4 equation. COYG!

Great from Danny, he’s been sorely missed and is a real grafter, but why do people insist on filming stuff in portrait mode, do you watch your TV at that angle? :sigh:

Awesome video! It got me searching other fan videos of Sunday’s match. Here’s another:

I wish there were more of these. It gives you a real sense of what it’s like to be at a match, something I dream of often.
