Alexis Sanchez scored twice as Chile beat Panama 4-2 to progress as runners-up from Group D.
The reigning champions had to fight hard for their win especially after Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo gifted Panama an early opener as Miguel Camargo’s 25-yard effort slipped through his fingers.
Eduardo Vargas levelled things up pouncing on a loose ball after an Alexis shot was saved and the former QPR striker grabbed his second just before half time with a cracking header.
After the break Alexis came to the fore, burying a terrific volley from 13-yards following a swift Chilean counter-attack on 49 minutes. Panama ensured a nervy finish notching their second with 15 minutes to go before the Arsenal striker killed them off in the dying moments with a header.
Chile will now face Mexico in the quarter-finals on June 28. David Ospina will represent Colombia the day before against Peru.
You can watch the highlights below.
Just Alexis and his Salmony leap then. Good game. Alexis looks jaded though.
What a leap for the second!
He might have conceded four, but some decent saves there by the Panama keeper. Looks like a good game too. The Euros are not a patch on the World Cup are they? I miss the South American teams.
That Volley though. Perfection.
Nice indeed. Very similar to Pelle’s goal for Italy the other night
You’d expect Barcelona’s first choice keeper to do better than that for both the goals. On a more important note, Alexis’ first goal was incredible! And for someone of his height he’s rather good at heading. He played fantastic this game. Good show, Alexis!
Augers well for next season, not that I’m trying to jinx it or anything!
I don’t even think the man sleeps, or if he does it’s probably in this position…..

It looks like Bravo collected money from a certain gambler for that early goal you can chose to call a ‘mistake’. That ‘mistake’ seems intentional.
just hope he isn’t knackered for next season!
