Wenger on the three things needed to maintain momentum

Arsene Wenger says his Arsenal side must keep their focus if they are to build on the flashes of potential they’ve shown in recent weeks.

The Gunners have gone eight games unbeaten since losing 4-3 to Liverpool on the opening day of the season; a run that has seen them move up to third in the Premier League, progress to round four of the EFL Cup and take top spot in their Champions League group.

Looking fluid up front and solid at the back, the boss says his side know how they want to play football.

“It looks like the team has interesting potential,” he told press after last night’s 2-0 win over Basel.

“We have to be ambitious and, as you know, keep our feet on the ground to continue to develop.

“We know exactly how we want to play football and we have to continue to stick to that and get better at it. That demands big focus and some leadership inside the squad. It also requires humility.”

The message appears to be getting through to the team with Theo Walcott revealing Wenger’s words ahead of kick-off last night.

“He wanted us not just to stand still and get a good result against Chelsea and then that’s it. You could just tell tonight that the intensity was there from the start. It died off towards the end but that’s obviously understandable. But then again, we kept the clean sheet – that’s what we want to do.

“We know how well offensively we are, but everyone is doing their defensive job and everyone’s working hard for each other. That’s the experience we’ve got in this team now, and it’s paying off.”

All good. Men in the team, motivated, with great back-up.

Too early in the season to get too excited but let’s hope they keep it going in the easier matches coming up then hit top form in November with three tricky matches then.

The Only Olivier is Giroud

Long may the champagne football continue! I love Giroud but this mobile front three (and oh my god special mention fir Iwobi!) is devastating. COYG!

The team is obviously more mature and also more physical now, we seems to have shred some of lackluster approaches to matches that has been our bane for sometimes now. Hope we continue on this path.

Squad of men. Obvious really.

I don’t know whats happening…… BUT I LIKE IT

Why are our fan base so miserable? Some cannot enjoy the teams success for more than a minute. Best Chelsea 3-0 “it was a shit Chelsea. Same thing happened last year. We beat united and fell apart” ok…beat Basel in style next game “it’s only Basel. Not exactly a European giant”. Team is looking great with the current style of play “bye bye giroud. It’s curtains for his Arsenal career”. Mustafi playing great “that’s it for the BFG”. Gaaaadamn! Just enjoy the moment without any “buts…” the team is playing well. Even the bayerns/madrids/barca don’t play this level of football… Read more »

You forgot Rambo: “He’s nowhere near the starting line up!” As much as I like Iwobi, and goddamn I love this kid, he won’t be able to play all of the games and sooner or later he will experience a dip in form and I think the role Iwobi is playing, would also be perfectly suited for Rambo. Half winger, half playmaker. And he is definitely stronger from an defensive point of view. So good to have all these options. I’m absolutely with you, can’t understand these miserable bastards.

“We know how well offensively we are, but everyone is doing their defensive job and everyone’s working hard for each other.”

so good to hear that from a guy who was previously a liability defensively. hoping players like ox follow his lead and and help us out defensively. only then our team will become better

ogban

Need to improve on second-half goal-scoring too.

We are playing well against average teams. We haven’t met anybody half serious to test us. Quality teams would compress the space in front of us… will see, we can only play against what’s in front of us.

Stewart Robson's therapist

As opposed to Man City, who are pronounced title favourites because they have seen off the mighty Sunderland, Stoke, Swansea, West Ham and Bournemouth.

Its never too early to get excited about the Arsenal

Will only be happy after beating spurs, west ham, man city, man U,and everton but so far good progress

Jammathon

I can nearly guarantee you won’t. You’ll find something to be miserable about.

Stillmatic

All good signs.

-We now have/returned back a style of play that has been missing for almost 4 years now.
– We finally seem to focus as much on defensive responsibility and tactical set up and pressing, that we’ve lacked.
– We now have the required depth of quality in the squad.

All we need now is for the injury gods to not destroy us come Christmas and New Years, like they annually do. Solve that, and we’re in a good position.

I’m actually looking forward to the NLD for the first time in a couple of seasons.

Though I’ll miss the loling of games like the Rosicky 0-1 after we play them off the park and score 6 without reply.
