Walcott: the little things are adding up

Theo Walcott says he’s not 100% sure why he’s in the fantastic form he’s in at the moment, but thinks all the ‘little things’ he’s concentrating on are at the root of it.

The England international has scored six goals in his last five games, and has seven for the season overall. He’s also working hard – and effectively – from a defensive point of view, long seen as a weakness in his game.

After his brace against Swansea, he touched on how working harder on and off the pitch seems to have made a difference.

“I think it’s the biggest step forward I’ve taken this season,” he said. “It’s the biggest piece of energy which I’ve never had before.

“I don’t know what that is, but I’ve been working really hard on that, in the summer and with a personal trainer – all little things which add up.

“It seems to be going well at this moment in time and I’m enjoying playing football.”

And even though he’s heading towards 100 goals for the club, he says the improvement in the defensive side of his game is giving him more satisfaction.

“I am happy with the goals,” he said. “I’m happy with the general play and defensive play as well, perhaps even more than the forward part of my game.

“I already know how well I can go forward, but there’s also other bits to do and I’ve been doing that this season.

“If I try to do my best for this team hopefully the team can benefit. I’m looking too far ahead here which I don’t like to do but there’s some good signs already.”

A few more little things still need to add up so he doesn’t miss sitters again. He is on the upward curve though. Wish all the players can stay fit throughout this season. I have a feeling something special is brewing.

This Theo can really keep us heading to that “next level”. I remember a while back when we played those Barca baffoons and one of them mentioned they most feared Theo… This is, kind of, the Theo they were talking about. Just this version is a tad better. He, and Ozil, will have to keep on doing as they are if we want to win trophies this year. We can match any team. Will also help in keeping Alexis happy at the club – though Alexis is a bit difficult to read. Looks very unhappy when he is not on… Read more »

I remember Messi saying after the 2010 world cup that if England had taken Walcott they could have won it. I honestly think he is more important than Özil and Alexis in big games against Barcelona etc because his pure pace and directness is so dangerous. I had hoped be would play at West Ham this season, but boy am I glad I was wrong!

Thierry Bergkamp

Let’s all hope for any injury free season and see where it takes him

Reality Check

I don’t know why you keep making fun of Ramsey for his banal interviews and not this guy!

Hulk

Only at the end of the season will I put the humble pie in the oven. I am currently happy to be sifting through recipes at the moment though.

Fin

Fantastic. Think we are all in the same boat. Win win situation really.

Redgibb

Fair fucks to the guy.

Karl M

He should be in double figures by Christmas, if not before then.

Arsepedant

He should be in double figures after the Ludobagman Hogwarts match tomorrow.

Little Mozart

If Theo stays fit he must be in with a shout of being our top scorer. His positioning is such that he has a lot of opportunities to score, and his finishing is deft, for the most part.

locksley444

He seems to be able to finish well when needed to place the ball in the bottom corners. Somehow less convincing in other type of efforts

Bob Davis

Hopefully he can continue his fine form and score a hat-trick against Sp?rs.

COYR!

Zyrth

I’ll keep my snide remarks to his interview reply. But will it be fair to just snigger at it?

Zyrth

Also I would say, fair play Theo. Really love this new look you. Long may this continue.

David Hillier's luggage

I think a big element on his side is re-learning to play primarily as a the right forward in a front three, which is really his best position(similar to the time he’d be banging them in around 2012/13) and the system we play at the moment. He’s not a winger in a 4-4-2 whipping the ball in or a centre forward for 90mins. With Sanchez dropping off and Bellerin providing width, it gives Theo the licence to dart in and cause havoc – and long may it continue!

Antispuds returns

Lucas is breathing on his neck. He needed a push. What all those braces about??? No hat trick?? He had clear chances for hat trick twice this season and scooped it. But again last season he would fail scoring those braces. One will call that improvement I would say he’s been fucking brilliant. Keep up Theo. But a hat trick against manure when we play them and you will be legend

meh as fuck

If he keeps this up I’m happy to keep eating delicious humble pie.

Javis

He will have another 20 goal + season if he stays fit, he was excellent in the 2012-2013 season and he’s easily replicating that form at present, with added defensive duties. Keep it up Theo!

Mike

Hopefully he can maintain it. I remember Wiltord, he start the season on fire then fade. Still a long way to go.
