Wenger: We’re giving Ramsey a pre-season

Arsene Wenger says that the club are managing Aaron Ramsey’s injury problems carefully after the Welshman endured a couple of small setbacks to the hamstring injury he suffered on the opening day.

The 25 year old is still not ready for first team action, and the manager says that putting him through a pre-season fitness regime is key to his recovery, even it means he’ll be out of action for another little while.

Speaking today when asked about his potential return to the team, Wenger said, “He has worked very hard, he’s had a few little, little setbacks, but he’s not far away now.

“Next week will come too early. It’s a bit of vicious circle, he had a setback, we rested him. The longer that goes on the more you have to dedicate time to rebuilding his fitness.

“It’s more the time it takes to rebuild his fitness. We’ve decided to give him a complete pre-season now, even if it means he’ll miss a few more games.”

So, hopefully he’ll be back in the near future, and can avoid any further injury problems.

An on-form Ramsey is a great asset to this team, but he will have to work his way back into contention due to the form of others.

Sorry, but Ramsey is no asset to the team. To the bench, maybe, but to the team, no. Except three seasons ago, his contributions have been close to zero or damaging to the balance of the team. Mo, Xhaka, Santi and Francis are giving us strength and power. Ramsey gives us his selfishness.

Maddy

With all due respect mate, that’s a huge load of bollocks.

IamaGoober

That’s total hogwash, Ramsey is top drawer on his day. I think his biggest issue is (like a lot of our players), fitness. He seems to get into the team, put in a couple of inconsistent performances, scores a goal, and then he starts building momentum and playing well then he pulls a hammy and that’s him out for awhile again.. Hopefully this idea of giving him a full pre-season will mean he starts hitting the peak of his performances around Christmas time when we have the fixtures coming thick and fast, and when we genuinely will need every fit… Read more »

InTheNorthBank

Nonsense. Unless of course you don’t consider the scoring of important goals to be an asset.

Sg_gooner

Red nose courted Ramsey but he let pogba go.

I think he has the quality, but our team setup is just not suited to him for the past two seasons.

I think we all also can’t pretend that he didn’t had a bit of “big head” issue during this time frame as well.

Thaatarsenalguy

8 understand why you’d call him selfish but I think it’s more a case of him playing instinctually rather than for personal gain. Sometimes gets caught up in the match and doesn’t see the jigger picture. That said, when his instincts match the vibe of the team, it’s incredible to watch as A gooner

Campbell's forehead

Cazorla offers a lot to the team but he doesn’t offer strength and power. As for Ramsey – are you actually serious?

MrBrain + Ozil's vision

Woww! I can’t imagine we have a player like Ramsey out for a while now, yet no one actually gives a hoot. Okay we do, but it shows we’ve got a really big and experienced squad that life can still go on very smoothly even without a Coq, Ramsey, Giroud, Welbeck and even an on-loan Wilshere and Campbell.

We’ll need them all to come back, but if they eventually did hopefull, they’ll have to battle tooth and nail to get back into the team. It can only be a good thing.

Good times ahead people!

Always a Gunner

We don’t need another season where players are off the pitch for months together.

Oh the joys of squad depth! This time last season, we’d be tearing out hairs dreading the possibility of an injury to the Coq and having to fall to the Flamster or Capt Arteta to partner Santi. Fast forward a year and we’re sitting pretty scratching our heads wondering when El neny will play, while debating whether to start Xhaka-boom in midfield.

And all this while no mention of Ramsey, Jack or shoe-horning Calum Chambers into Midfield!

I think I like this feeling

Newxieland

Loving our midfield atm! No Wilshere, no Ramsey, no problem!

The Beast

Wenger’s favourite,he’s coming straight into the team once fully fit.

Little Mozart

Ramsey never switches off so it’s no surprise he runs himself into injury, all things considered. If he can come back and stay fit then he will be a very important player this season.

Eduardo Stark

might be a good idea to bring Oxlade-Chamberlain to this pre-season.

Jomo

Ramsey response:

“A preseason? I was hoping for a box of chocolates, some flowers or maybe a slice of cake.”

Double98

Pre season… so Does he have to fly out to Malaysia and play the Malaysian Allstar creepy clown XI and then on to single handedly face Man City in that shanghai bowl tournament competition event championship, before returning to for an emirates cup?

Can I come?

Dawn

Can Giroud and I come too. In fact can I go anywhere with Giroud. Get better quickly Oli.

CantDance

Give him as much time as he needs to put the injury woes behind him. We’re well stocked in midfield to cover his absence now.My humble opinion is that Ramsey’s best position is the ozil role but unfortunately he has a rather large problem ahead of him there in the shape of Er….mesut ozil.

Edu's Braces

Crazy how he is still only 25, never had the sheen of a wonderkid but man oh man he was one. (Was a wonderkid, now a wonderman (in a non sexual way (in a sexual way)))

Thierry Bergkamp

In years gone by he would have been rushed back. The luxury of good squad depth.

LemmeTakeASzczelfie

This is weird, I just read news about one of our stars being out for longer than expected, yet I’m not sweating profusely whilst stabbing a Diego Costa Vodoo doll in the knee. Is… Is this that squad depth thing I keep reading about? Is this what that feels like?

In all seriousness though, wishing Rambo a full recovery and a productive season.

Unyoke The Ox

Makes a big difference when you have enough depth that you don’t HAVE to rush someone back.

Arshavin's fake moustache

Good stuff. Ease him back to fitness then let him duke it out with the others for the right to start.

Gunnerdave1970

What’s up with Debuchey

Sideshow Mo

He’s a bit petulant 😉

Arsepedant

Who cares?

Nothing new

This is great news, we can have a new cm duo for the second half, maybe emulate form for a whole season cuz we have done it through a calender year b4 and the difference between em is a pre season….super pumped arsene, what an idea!

Kafkush

I just wish Arsene would tell him, I want a complete game from you, I want you tackling like you did in your breakout season.

rohit

I really hope that he fights for his place with Ozil and not with Santi/Elneny. Also, I hope that he does have to fight for it and is not given a free pass into the team.

Futsboller

A fit Ramsey will be a major boon, and I can see Wenger rolling out his own 4-1-4-1 (Xhaka the lone DM, with Ramsey slotting in beside Ozil) against the right opposition with considerable results. Ramsey is a dynamic player who is best defined as a roving midfielder, and thus by no defined position at all; this is why many see him as competing with Ozil for a starting berth, but Ramsey’s work-rate and ability to cover the entire pitch will enable him rather to complement both Ozil and Xhaka (we would be building the attack less with key passes… Read more »

Arsepedant

I think this is a fantastic idea, particularly against teams that park the bus and don’t attack us much. That said, if we do go for a 4-1-4-1, I’d expect to see Coquelin rather than Xhaka in front of the back four.

Joseph

The guy needs to play where Ozil plays. I know that’s not going to happen but when we shoehorn him in elsewhere, he’s less effective.

santori

Agree with Joseph, Ramsey’s best position is attacking mid just behind the striker…effectively where Ozil plays. Its not a zero sum game as Ozil may not be able to play all the games. BUT in lieu of Ozil as first choice playing mostly there, I’d expect Ramsey is also another option linking next to say a positionally disciplined and deeper lying Granit. It didn’t work out so well with Coquelin who likes to press higher (He seems to strike a better balance with Santi, the Frenchman) but that could also improve in time. Plenty of options between Granit and Coquelin,… Read more »

An Ox-sized Coq

In the back of my mind I really thought that we didn’t rush him back so he can have 6-8 weeks of proper fitness work.
