Report: Ludogorets 2-3 Arsenal (inc. goals)

Starting XI: Ospina, Jenkinson, Mustafi, Koscielny, Gibbs, Coquelin, Ramsey, Xhaka, Ozil, Alexis, Giroud

Subs: Cech, Gabriel, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Holding, Iwobi, Elneny, Maitland-Niles

__

Arsenal secured safe passage to the knockout stages of the Champions League for a 17th successive season as they fought back from two goals behind to secure a 3-2 win against a determined Ludogorets team in Sofia.

Jonathan Cafu and Claudiu Keseru gave the hosts a commanding lead inside 15 minutes before Granit Xhaka and Olivier Giroud hauled the Gunners level before the break. The game appeared to be edging towards a draw before brilliance from Mesut Ozil three minutes before time sealed a tremendous comeback win.

After the 6-0 demolition of Ludogorets at the Emirates, Arsene Wenger told his players that their vanquished Bulgarian opponents would be eager to prove themselves on home turf. The boss has been in the game long enough to know that if you take your foot off the gas, you pay the price. His players, sporting unnecessary neon yellow shorts with their blue third kit, obviously didn’t heed the warning.

Having started brightly and had a chance to take the lead, Ozil’s scuffed finish not doing justice to a sweeping counterattack, the Gunners promptly went behind.

Only 12 minutes were on the clock when a harsh free-kick was awarded against Xhaka for a nothing handball. From the resulting set piece Cafu stole finished from six yards out as the ball arrived at the back post. Should Ospina have come for the ball? Perhaps. (1-0)

Three minutes later, Cafu turned provider as the hosts, pumped by a partisan home crowd, extended their lead. Gibbs was skinned by the Brazilian and Claudiu Keseru slipped between Koscielny and Mustafi and neatly slotted past Ospina first time from the cutback. November was just over 20 hours old and it all felt very Arsenal. (2-0)

Thankfully, within six minutes the deficit was reduced. Alexis fed Ozil inside the left channel and the German’s pass, made just before the ball rolled over the byline, was met by Xhaka who deftly controlled his left-foot effort into the net. It was the Swiss’ first Champions League goal and very timely. (2-1)

The goal certainly settled Arsenal’s nerves and they began to impose themselves on the game, constantly probing and dominating possession. Ozil hit a delicious volley from the edge of the box that was goalbound but blocked just in time.

Four minutes before half time Wenger’s men grabbed a deserved equaliser courtesy of Giroud’s third goal in less than an hour’s football. Ramsey, out on the right wing, hit a straight diagonal ball into the box for the Frenchman, rising like a salmon in front of the keeper, to flick home. (2-2)

The start to the second period was pockmarked by a succession of fouls as the whistle-happy Dutch referee came to the fore. Unsurprisingly, Arsenal’s bash brothers, Coquelin and Xhaka, both found themselves in the book. Jenkinson later joined them.

In the heat of battle the fluidity of the opening 45 munutes was lost with the Gunners struggling to muster any attacks of note. Indeed, the home side having recovered their composure looked the more likely to score.

Just past the hour mark, Wanderson, one six Brazilians in the Ludogorets’ starting lineup, should have restored the home side’s lead only to hit a weak shot straight at Ospina after the Gunners were caught light in defence on the break. Two minutes later the Colombian denied the same man a second time, this time diving low at the attacker’s feet. Brave and necessary keeping.

Looking to inject some pace, Wenger sent on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in place of Aaron Ramsey but the game remained fractured. It looked as though Arsenal might have to settle for a point, until Mesut Ozil stole the points and secured qualification to the knockout stages.

With three minutes remaining the German sprung the Bulgarians’ defence to latch onto substitute Elneny’s great pass. There was much to do, but the midfielder did it all with a nonchalance befitting his status as one of the game’s best players. First he skipped the ball over the onrushing keeper, then he danced past two defenders before rolling the ball home. It was a truly fantastic individual goal and a fine way to win a game. (3-2)

In the other game, PSG secured a 2-1 victory over Basle meaning they too qualify. Top spot will likely go to the victors when Arsenal face the French champions at the Emirates on 23 November.

Unnecessarilystupid

Ozil summoning God there with that goal.

DontForget

I’d say it was as cool as you like but it was much much colder than that.

JustAGooner

A very bergkamp skill. Now there’s no way he’s going to reduce his 250k wage demand.

Santi's Smile

Happy to have Silent Sam pick up that tab. He can handle it.

Julian Gooner

His name is Stan, ahahahha

PVS

Well, if stan would be as vocal as sam, we’d have had multiple sting operations at arsenal.

Deckard

Give it to him. If he keeps banging them in like that it’s a drop in the ocean.

Hard_Coq

I will be looping this oil goal for the whole of today, just to admire the pure beauty in it. Composure, skill, style, finish all in one

Drrj

Giroud’s tackle for that goal was sublime

Armchair Expert

That goal was worth 250k per week!

Mpls

And the #10

As much as I love Jacky, and I do, that was about as DB10 as we’ll ever see.

D

WE’VE GOT GOALZIL!!! MESUT GOALZIL!!!!

Chamakh

Elneny with a beautiful pass too! And Girouds defending prior to that, just exceptional.

Arsetronomy

Glad you mentioned that. Giroud flung himself into that tackle in Alexian fashion.

That goal. If Zidane had scored it in his day people would be jizzing everywhere!

Arsened

Agreed. I’ve watched the goal about 50 times already to analyse each second. I love it how Elneny is the closest arsenal player to özil when he scores. Who to start in midfield against sp**s?

Thierry's First Touch

Truly a thing of beauty. I think this goal is in that class of “one of the best goals ever scored”. Not No.1 per se, but its in the dvd box-set. There’s so many elements of it that are just sublime. Reminds me of the classic Bergkamp flick and turn around the defender. Just God-level fundamentals. Or like when Messi literally lowered Boateng into his grave in the champions league last year. Unbelievably precise, yet creative touches. Glad to have Ozil adding to Arsenal’s rather distinguished library of legendary goals. Long may it continue.

Lula da Gilberto

Just awesome. He’s getting “Dennis”-esque

Timo

Two nil down

Sheffield Goon

… win the cup.

It’s a game we’d have lost in previous seasons. Character.

Bob Davis

Bloody hell was that a rollercoaster or what!

We don’t things the easy way, but Ozil took his goal brilliantly.

Wasn’t sure who put the ball through to him. I think it was Elneny. If so it was a great substitution from Wenger!

Bring on those Sp?rs scumbags.

We’re going to destroy them.

Maniac

Is there a classier player than Ozil? Outstanding finish.

Frank

Outlandish goal.

Jijo

5:35 AM. Didn’t sleep a bit. But well worth the wait! What a goal ozil!!

Big Mad Andy

I was having a good birthday. Then I was having a bad birthday. Then it was a reasonable birthday. Then Özil Made it a great birthday.

Gabe

Guess it’s safe to say “Happy Birthday”

PJ

ÖzilÖzil assisted in another great birthday celebration!
Happy birthday to you, Andy!

Sank

What a touch, close control and finish by ozil.

They too played well and it was a hard game.

Unlucky psg scored in 90th min.

A Gorilla

I think it’s a good thing. No-one is going to hand us trophy this season, we have to work for it. And beating teams like PSG at home is exactly what we will need to do a few times if we want silverware, so bring it on.

Stringer Bell

Great win after terrible start. Ozil is a genius footballer. Really hope Ramsey don’t start on Sunday.

VintageFuzz

Ayo lock that door! 😀

Stranger

Exactly! When I saw the starting lineup yesterday evening, I felt well, welcome back to the old Arsenal. We all saw how the first half went. Baring that assist, Ramsey was always a clog in the wheel as far as Arsenal is concerned. He should just get a club in Wales as he seems to play his best games when in and around the country.

Ozil….Classy as always! ??

geolgău

Outstanding!!! Life is good.

Anonymarse

Outrageous Ozil

Antispuds returns

He is overated, lazy and his body language is not inspiring. But can THAT be considered as an assist and goal? like sself-assist? he lobed the poor goalie and laid flat two grown up men the lazy sod! this prompted Owen the twat make the biggest verbal u – turn in the history of television. That was pure wizardry

Anonymarse

Think he probably hasn’t watched ozil play for a few years …

Getso gunner

Game like this is the reason why i believe Arsenal this season are different

Psycho Gooner

What. A. Goal. I can’t think of anything else right now.

P.S.- Does Giroud have the most goals scored with the head title yet?

But shit man, what a goal…

SB

As a bonus, PSG nearly dropped couple of points.

Ilari

Mesut fucking Özil

eternalflamini

That is all.

Beowulf

Well that was nerve shredding!

ayo

Nice one boys.. unto spuds.

chuqu

Özil killed the goalie, killed two players and the goalie again, made some phone calls, then decided to score…Lionel Özil .

Psycho Gooner

Mesut Messi

Cherrybhai

I just don’t think you understand.

badaab

Let’s not sully this by bringing any of that barca lot into it. The goal is Ozil’s, the victory belongs to the Arsenal.

masterofthegoonaverse

They did well last night

simafem

ozil reminds me there is still good in this world

OOzil

Giroud winning the ball back, Elneny with a great forward pass and Ozil dancing past players to score. All complaints taken care of in one swift move 🙂

78/79/80

who was it who lunged back to make the tackle just inside our half to get the ball to Elneny? Proper commitment. Wanting it more. Impressive.

Arshavin's fake moustache

Giroud I think

Anonymarse

Giroud’s a big guy must be scary being on the receiving end of one of those

Arsenal Tegar

Monsiur Giroud 🙂

Goongot

Giroud’s tackle to win the ball back for dreamy god’s goal..i love u giroud?

DAMOBOT

Arsene, such a drama hoer. Don’t want a routine win, there has to be a big hoha around it.
Love it!!!

Ian

Maybe time to dispense with the Ospina as CL goalie bit?

Bryce Hauver-Reeves

No

Dave

Why, exactly? Neither goes were his fault, first one was a superb well take Free Kick (just where it hurts defenders and keepers). He had nothing to do on the second, and he actually made a good couple saves to kept us on the game

btw

Super win but hard game, for a while we looked the worst of latter day Arsenal, flaccid dominance, slow passing, no movement, no understanding, players who looked surprised when someone passed the ball to them, and players who looked like they would rather not have the ball at all.

I guess that’s what happens when you change the team around, Ramsey gave me no reason to miss him. I miss Walcott.

Psycho Gooner

What bro?

Dial Square Charity XI

I got the impression the pitch was a bit shit. No one wanted to have to turn quickly…

kaius

Giroud’s sliding tackle, Elneny’s pass taking out three defenders, Ozil taking out two more defenders and mummifying the goalkeeper before finishing.
An iconic goal.

If Ludogrets didn’t have more drugs in their system than Pablo Escabar I’ll be damned. Good result

Gandalf

Messit Ozil.

beNZed

Whose ever idea it was to caption the 3-2 goal with Let The Bodies Hit The Floor is a genius.

Tune is now fully embedded in my brain though.

santori

We always have to do it the hard way. It would be boring otherwise.:P We lacked much width without Bellerin on the right side. Jenkinson is so limited and Ramsey isn’t a wide player. That said, good assist for Rambo for the equaliser. Also good goal for OG. Many fans are thoroughly inflexible in thought. NOw that Wenger made the correct decision with Alxis up top for a spell, to them it can ONLY be Alexis. Why so limiting? We can play Alxis up top or Giroud. Or we can play both. Giroud scores. He has now scored 3 in… Read more »

Clock-End Mike

I thought Jenkinson did well, actually. He’s a different option from Bellerin, who’s undoubtedly our first choice RB, but as good an understudy as we’ve had for a while.

AusDrexler

That ball he put on Alexis’s boot through on goal, but Alexis’s touch let him down… was a sublime Ozil esk pass. Superb. Xhaka is a gifted player, he provides another passing option. I would hate to defend against him and Ozil on the edge of the box. They can make you look ordinary as a defender with 1 pass.
The squad and skillsets available this season is so much improved over last season its scary. Surely, its time to end the PL drought.

Petit's Handbag

I’m sick of Ozil knicking a living

Özil don’t need no balon fuckin d’uh. He don’t wanna be labeled legend. He just wanna plaaaayy!!!

Themightybun

What a goal. Wow.

But my god, Michael Owen, the quisling fist fuck, changing his tune like psychotic serial killer. Man, what a cunt.

santori

Bias much?

Michael Owen is an utter prat. Reflects well on the establishment that continuously hires him to spout rubbish . Piers Morgan is an even bigger plonker.

PFo

What did Owen say? (I guess I have masochistic tendencies, as that’s the only explanation for my curiosity.)

Beowulf

On other matters, I hate Mancity and everything they stand for. I hate they’re financed by a country. I hate them for Nasri. I hate them for Gael. I hate them for Kolo.I hate them for Adebarndor. I hate them them for financial doping. I hate them for PV4. Most of all I hate them for Bakari. Today though allow me to admit. I loved that they fucked Barca. Barca are the bigger cunts. They got no dna no fuckin more. Oh I hate Pep as well in case I forgot to mention. Goodnight my gooner friends.

Coqs on fire

Hi just provided an assist for himself

ThatGermanGooner

Did Özil just assist himself with that lob pass over the keeper? #TypicalOzilThings

Kav

I could watch that Ozil goal all day… Immense!

I AM ARSENAL

WEEEE GOTTTTTT OZIIIIIIL

Chant will be ringing in my ears for the next 24 hours. Absolutely bodied the keeper and the two defenders. Every single touch he took was Mesut (new by-word for Perfect)

Elneny’s first touch was a fantastic ball and well done Giroud who was mostly poor..Never stopped trying and the hard work contribute to something special.

AusDrexler

In the dictionary, when you look up the word perfect, there is now just a picture of Mesut.

MIke

What a goal. That was Bergkamp-esque

My favourite ozil goal for us hands down. Great god dam player

Dom47

Amazing character and win. So happy and proud of the boys. We need to give Mesut and Alexis what they want, they deserve it. On the other matters, Ramsey again on the right? Thought we were passed that. Maybe AW wanted some stability, not having two players who risk by taking on the players (as Alexis and Ox would do), which was said before. But still, I thought we don’t need to do that anymore. Again, Ramsey provided the assist for the 2nd goal. What the hell do I know 🙂 I guess Ramsey is starting the derby on Sunday… Read more »

PFo

Ramsey should not be starting Sunday on current form. On the right he negates the pacey style we’ve adopted to great success this season (fair play to him for a great cross for Giroud’s goal, but that doesn’t paper over the cracks of a pretty mediocre performance from him), and (at the current time, at least) he’s not quick and reliable enough on the ball in the middle to start in a two man midfield in such a big game. If Santi’s still out this weekend (and may it not be so!), I’d go with either Elneny or Xhaka alongside… Read more »

Did anybody noticed that Bayern might finish 2nd of their bracket ? :-/
OK, I’m out….
PS @ shitbird : brilliant Wilson Shakespeare quote 😉

AP

We will beat fucking Bayern.

Dan D

Nice comeback and delicious winner. Love both Giroud and Elneny’s contributions there also.

Little niggle is the lack of concentration in opening 20 mins but while we are still not utterly rid of such issues we’ve certainly got a little more “mental strength” it would seem now.

Roll on Sunday…

santori

Mesut Ozil…best Wenger panic buy ever for 42.3m +1 quid.

Dave

Can’t believe I doubted Wenger when he brought Xhaka off for Elneny. At the time I was thinking surely Granit will be more likely to produce something. But then Elneny with that assist for Ozil..
