Via the Mirror comes news that Arsenal players cancelled their scheduled Christmas party in the wake of the two defeats to Everton and Man City.
The Gunners season had been chugging along very nicely, but a week from hell in which they threw away the lead to lose 2-1 twice forced senior players into a rethink.
The report says that the likes of Petr Cech and Laurent Koscielny decided that the players being seen on the town in fancy dress probably wasn’t the right message to send after such a disappointing week.
And they’re undoubtedly right. Seeing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain dressed as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle or Hector Bellerin as one of the Kray twins probably wouldn’t have gone down well.
Perhaps on Monday they might dress up as Arsenal footballers and win a game. Boom!
That’s a bit of stretch, unless they have plans to disappoint us further. Christmas is all about fellowship, good or bad.
…in good or bad times
No man, he meant bad fellowship, like bad friends. People you feel guilty towards treating badly, although they deserve it, that sort of nonsense.
No better litmus test then West Brom at home, to show that the cancelled office party was the right thing to do….
Dam it, seeing ozil dressed as the invisible man would have been awesome.
Can see that every week. He’s quite good at it.
Fucking hell!! What are you talking about?
2 indifferent games and he’s shit of course.
It’s a team game. It’s a good thing if THEY have decided this. I’ve been steaming all week with All the team.
Move on time!
They should acknowledge fans after a games win/lose/or draw rather then running down to the hanging room for selfies
I doubt they were taking selfies after losses like that Mr. Ferdinand.
“Hanging room”. I know we’re all a bit disappointed, but that’s a bit over the top in my mind (and the ceiling is probably not even high enough for Mertesacker…)
They do by and large?
Depends how the fans perform!
I’d pay to see Hector dress and play like Ronnie Kray.
The Boxing day fixture can’t come soon enough.
This period of gloom is killing me.
Cheer up, its Christmas. You never know what Santa might bring you…
Santa’s bringing us a 7-0 win on Boxing Day.
Hope so…
It seems like the more experienced players want to signal that the recent displays should not be taken lightly. Good to see the players responding. Alexis gets to spend more time with his dogs too which can only be positive.
It’s has effective as a course of leaches…
Obviously they will still celebrate, just not publicly, which is probably for the best.
Personally I think it’s a shame, two bad results shouldn’t mean a cancellation. Before then they went 18 games upbeaten including spanking Chelsea 3-0. I appreciate that they are all multi millionaires & one party isn’t going to affect them but I think it’s an inditement on the reactionary media world we live in where they thought this was necessary. A good night out might have blown the cobwebs of the last two games away and gave way to a new focus on the Christmas games. For those people who say ‘they shouldn’t be celebrating Christmas after two defeats’ I… Read more »
Nice comments.
I agree, I think a party would do them the world of good. A little team bonding when people are a bit down on themselves.
I will party for them! It’s 12 o’clock somewhere!!!
this is such a modern football affectation. make a point of cancelling the Christmas party (and gently sharing this development with a reporter or two) because it’s good (or not bad) PR. anyone who would get worked up about people enjoying their work xmas party is less football fan/normal human being, more disgusting manchild.
I work with a complete bunch of incompetent tosspots but they still Christmas party like its £19.99
My mate says: Wenger, the pointy nosed balax. Looks more like Ebeneezer Scrooge every year. I hope the ghosts of Christmases past, present and future visit him tonight. And maybe the man will wake up a changed man, and shout out the window to a passing waif, “What league is it, what season is it?!!” And the boy will answer, “What league sir? Why it’s The Premier League, and it’s December of the 2016/17 campaign” And Wenger will think to himself, ‘then I haven’t missed it, the transfer window is still open.’ And the old bastard, beginning to warm up,… Read more »
I thought they had already had a Christmas party? Saw some videos posted by a girl who was there of Giroud and Holding doing some very questionable dancing
Very sad truth about the people of this world. Losing football matches means you can’t have fun, “I WON’T BE SATISFIED UNTIL EVERYONE IS AS MISERABLE AS I AM”.
I bet at home everyone has to make sure all their curtains are drawn before they crack a smile too.
How ridiculous that they are so scared of the backlash from idiot fans that they would have to cancel what we all enjoy. Despite how good or bad our years have been we should all get to enjoy Christmas. Modern football fans make me sick.
Everyone has a right to enjoy Christmas. What a sad state of affairs this is. This isn’t about the message that it would send out. It’s about a vindictive football press and angry maniacs on channels like Arsenal Fan TV, to whom social media has unfortunately given a huge voice. Deluded as to their own importance and chasing online attention, they have driven our boys into hiding at Christmas. It’s shameful. No one can tell me that Tony Adams’ crew, who we all adore, wouldn’t have gone out on the lash at Christmas – regardless of recent results. In fact,… Read more »
Exactly, they would be crucified by some fans, I can see the comments: “How dare you celebrate with your friends after loosing two games! After you do it on the pitch then you can celebrate!” Like everybody after a blunder in their job cancel all their festive program because of it… shame those fans get so much attention in the media… easyclicks
Save the party for the ‘treble’ celebrations at the end of may.
It’s the way I tell ’em, I’m here all week, and so forth…..
Would ‘fans’ really be upset about a party. it’s Christmas and the team look like they could do with the team building/bonding time.
Going by social media (and some written press), it looks like they had an xmas party of sorts a couple days after the Everton game. Might help explain the tired performance against City?
Its wise. Cancelling the party is a way to avoid further distractions and questions that certainly would have come from the media. West Brom away is not going to be easy for us. This could easily be a 0-0 draw. So yes, postpone the party so that the annual celebration is not in the middle of our worst run of form in 10 months
I just don’t care whether they celebrate Christmas or not I just can’t take yet another dismal performance. Players need to show some fight and spirit in the game. Need to show some character.
Have the fucking party!
I thought I would give football a miss for a few weeks – Arsenal have a habit of frustrating – and the only reason I knew we lost two games on the bounce is finally checking this site!!! The misery I have missed, having looked through the comments, makes my time away worth while!!! Suffice to say Arsenal won’t win the league, still top four but not the title!!! The mental strength, that Wenger claims the players have, just isn’t there!!! I think Wenger will leave at the end of the season and rightly so as he does not seem… Read more »
