Arsenal: Cech, Mustafi, Koscielny, Gabriel, Monreal, Coquelin, Xhaka, Walcott, Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis
Subs: Ospina, Gibbs, Holding, Ramsey, Elneny, Iwobi, Lucas
Alexis Sanchez was the hero for Arsenal as Arsene Wenger’s men claimed all three points on their first ever visit to the London Stadium with a 5-1 win.
The Chilean started the afternoon by assisting Mesut Ozil and then grabbed himself a superb second half hat-trick as the Gunners delivered a dominant performance that takes them up to second in the table. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored to cap off a fine showing while Andy Carroll came off the bench to net a consolation for the Hammers.
First half
It’s no secret that West Ham have struggled at home since moving to the London Stadium and the Gunners, sensing nerves both on the pitch and in the terraces, looked eager to force their hosts onto the back foot from the off.
Three times inside the opening 12 minutes Nacho Monreal stole behind the right side of the West Ham defence but each time he failed to pick out a player in yellow. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, finding similar space, was similarly profligate in possession despite the Hammers defence being in total disarray after an early switch in formation following the exit of James Collins due to injury on four minutes.
The first clear chance of the game fell to Shkodran Mustafi whose header from a corner bounced just wide. West Ham responded soon after, Dimitri Payet feeding Lanzini who forced Petr Cech into a save at his near post.
The Gunners early superiority paid off on 23 minutes. Coquelin blocked a pass out of defence by Gabriel Ogbonna, Alexis pounced on the free ball to race into the box and with the goal gaping he unselfishly picked out Ozil who tapped into an open net. (1-0)
Chamberlain’s pace continued to cause the home side all manner of problems. Through on goal on 28 minutes he tried an Henry curler, but somehow managed to bend the ball in exactly the opposite direction so that it went out for a throw.
Alexis could have doubled the lead when he charged from the halfway line but he overcooked hi second touch, was forced wide by Randolph and ended up giving away a free-kick. It was easy to forgive the Chilean, he was all vim and vigour throughout the opening period.
Just before half-time Gabriel did well to force Pedro Obiang to head over from a cross to the back post. The Brazilian paid a heavy price in the process, falling heavily on his right leg. He required treatment but thankfully, given the Gunners’ problems at right-back, was able to continue.
Second half
Arsenal started where they left off after the break, pressing high and missing chances. Chamberlain, who’d switched to the right flank, won a free-kick, and Walcott headed Ozil’s delivery over the bar. The England international squandered a second opportunity minutes later following clever footwork by Chamberlain and a neat ball by Alexis.
It wasn’t all Arsenal though, twice in quick succession the home side forged chances to rouse the home side; first Laurent Koscielny cleared Manuel Lanzini’s cross then Ashley Fletcher fired wide from outside the box.
On 65 minutes Aaron Ramsey was sent on for Theo Walcott, whose last action was a blocked shot, with the Welshman taking up a position on the right. Ramsey was straight into the thick of the action, forcing Randolph into a save from close range after Monreal’s cutback, Ozil’s acrobatic effort from the rebound was also blocked.
The Gunners finally doubled their lead on 71 minutes and it was all about the individual brilliance of Alexis Sanchez. The Chile international, ten yards outside the West Ham box, controlled a pass by from Mustafi, spun on a sixpence, beat marker Musuaka, drove goalwards and fired a low shot across Randolph into the far corner. It was a blooming lovely strike. (2-0)
In the mood, Alexis helped himself to a second on 79 minutes. After Xhaka and Ozil faffed around outside the box trying to create something intricate, the ball fell to our in-form striker who took the ball early to arrow in from outside the box. (3-0)
West Ham grabbed a goal back within three minute. Dimitri Payet hit the bar with a free-kick and Andy Carroll, on as a sub, headed in from five yards out. (3-1)
The comeback was nipped in the bud quickly. No sooner had the kick-off been taken, Chamberlain, who’d really imposed himself on the game, curled in a fine effort with his right foot. (4-1)
Four became five as Chamberlain turned provider for Alexis who raced through to complete his hat-trick with an awesome dinked finish after an eye-catching step-over. (5-1)
All in all, a terrific performance from Arsenal and a fine way to start December after a somewhat disjointed November. Let’s hope we can keep it going.
The Ox was excellent. He had his usual few mistakes but he was everywhere and I was delighted when he scored that goal. As for Alexis, there are no words…
Yep . Though he had one or two laughable touches he was constantly driving forward and opening up their defence. Really pleased for the lad he got a goal.
He always has those touches but he’s unique in the sense that he can literally beat 4/5 players while going forward. He was doing that for the full 90 too. very impressed.
His tracking back and work rate were also exemplary
Learning from Theo?
Alexis to the solar plexus!
Ox’s drive was so similar to when we played Milan. Keep it up, Ox! COYG!!
I think Ox got a couple of assists too. This can only be good for his confidence.
Words for Alexis: Beast, clinical, tireless, composed, brilliant, priceless.
Words for Andy Carroll: Horse faced munter
Yeah for me the Ox’s excellent performance was even more significant than Alexi’s magnificence…because we know Slecis is amazing. Whilst we know Ox has great potential – which he delivered on today.
Ox was an 8 out of 10 for me, Alexis 10.
Bloody mobile ‘Slecis’ should obviously be ‘Alexis’
And an assist!
I especially enjoyed how his step-over fooled not one but two cameramen!
Give Alexis all the dogs in the world, the Buckingham Palace but make him stay Arsenal
… plus: He must have a song!
Claims he’s as good as Ronaldo and Messi. And then sets about beginning to prove it. What a man.
Comparing him to Messi in this striker role is less ridiculous by the week.
And to think that Barca sold him for peanuts.
I know we are all buzzing but Messi and Ronaldo are on a foregone planet. Let him get 50 plus goals a season
*Different planet
Agreed. I think he’s the best of the rest. Although no matter how I phrase that it sounds disrespectful, it’s meant to be a compliment.
If you give him the role Ronaldo has for Real there isn’t much between them. Sanchez better defender, work rate, dogs. Ronaldo better in the air and in the box movement (just). Otherwise close. Messi is almost mythical though. Another 10 levels above anyone in world football.
Ronaldo and Messi are on a similar level. Then it’s the rest.
Alexis Sanchez Baby!
Gabriel is a Brazilian warrior.
It warmed my heart to see Xhaka comforting Gabriel after the knock. What a lad.
Great 3 points and what a strike from the Ox! I wish we killed them off earlier in the game. They were there for the taking. Alexis is just in fire at the moment. I hope he’s rested for the next game. He’s our most important player! Give him the contract that he deserves.
COYG!
Superb result and some really nice work and finishing for Sanchez; a clear man of the match!
The Ox was great, which I am very pleased about. Mistakes are not a problem if you keep working at the game..Sanchez makes planty of unforced errors but doesn’t let his head drop.
Let’s kick on.
Whatever Sanchez wants, pay it.
Much more fluidity in passing movement and understanding with team selection. It’s not a surprise
Thought Xhaka and Coquelin were excellent. Cazorla-esque, I lost count of the amount of times they got out of tricky situations.
Great result but fair do’s, Hammers are absolute shite. Felt a bit preseason at times, I was worried we weren’t quite there in terms of intensity but individual brilliance won it. Viva Sanchez!
We all know how good Alexis is ! And he just showed it again. But Mr. Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, please please please continue to play this way. You can win all games on your own! Just realise it!
I am waiting for Danny to come back. We could just about stuff any team with that kind of pace and movement!!
Wow!! What a performance by Alexis and the team overall! Generally looked sharp.
How would you describe Ramsey’s position when he came on? I swear he was on the left / middle next to Ox more then on the right. Did we change formation?
That dummy by Alexis for the hat-trick goal though…
Also, where do I sign up to contribute to the crowd-fund for covering Alexis’ salary?
Here ya go

Sadly as we have learnt in the past that is no guarantee that money will be reinvested on our key player’s top contract
There’s one in every crowd.
It’s an honour and a privilege to see Alexis in an Arsenal shirt. I fucking love that man, give him the moon on a stick and whatever else it takes to keep him!
Man, The Ox, finally getting that to be the best — do a Sanchez. He ran after everything, closed down, gave everything. I really do think he’s finally got it. Amazing, get in.
I like beating West Ham. I really do.
And it certainly isn’t made all the more sweet thanks to their acquisition of a tax-payer funded stadium that they definitely won without any corruption or shenanigans or anything like that, no siree. I would never be so petty as to hold that against them, heavens forfend.
Actually, given how shit they are right now, it’s a pity Sp*rs weren’t given it after all.
Not that humiliating West Ham isn’t wonderful too, mind you!
It’s like getting one over your younger sibling. You know you should win, however, it’s only a couple of years and a few inches between you.
Being a derby adds to the uncertainty too, but always enjoyable when we win…maybe it’s the number of them I get to smugly dismiss, like ” don’t worry, you’ll get there one day” , “There, there. There, there”.
Well done lads. Nice way to improve goal difference. COYG
Plaudits will go to Sanchez for a scintilating performance and rightly so but, yet again I feel the need to shout out THE OX. There are some among us that would have you think he’s absolute bobbins. Don’t listen to them, he loses concentration every now and again but when he plays for the team he can be unplayable. Also shout out to Monreal, a player I haven’t always been convinced by but he was excellent today too. Pat on the back for Ramsey too, much more lively compared to midweek
I don’t think anyone’s problem with the Ox is that he’s selfish, he just often doesn’t think quickly enough in the final third and makes the wrong decision. He still has a couple of moments like that every game (that cross from close range was horrendous) but he seems to be getting better and better at not letting it get him down and he managed to have a real positive impact today.
I don’t think he’s selfish either, what I meant was at times he’s very “individual”, more focused on what he’s doing than on the team. I’m talking about him dribbling into corners when he could make a pass earlier to set someone free. And by losing concentration I mean messing up very simple passes. Looks like he’s getting over both of those issues though
alexis on fire
i was still buzzing from the work he did on the assist for ozil’s goal.
the effort on his first.
the shape of his body to hit the second.
and the third.
One word… Alexis. Better than sex. Why do I feel like he doesn’t get as much love as Ozil? 🙁 Fans should chant his song more or change it a bit. Maybe even another “We’ve got Sanchez” song alongside Ozil’s?
I thought Coquelin and Gabriel did really well this game.
I know, Alexis, but show some love for our Coq. Thought he had a cracking game in all aspects – interceptions, tackles, clearances, Cazorlish dribbles out of tight spots and the quick pass forward to set up a fast break. And the partnership with Xhaka seems to be growing… keep it up!
Sublime performance from Alexis. Lovely play from the Ox as well. COYG
Give Alexis all the monies!!
And the doggies!
Does anyone else also hear stadium Ozil chants inside their head sometimes?
Its that loud every away game, brilliant support. Alexis deserves that much chanting too.
todays bonus ratings must go to fernandinho for choking once a homesick wanker
Aguero too for missing 3 games the third of which is our game at the Etihad
Gabriel was an absolute warrior today… Got ahead well, defended ferociously.. Our flank of gabriel monreal finally looked real today…
Poor opposition tonight that should bring our feet back on the ground. We should have lead by 4 or 5 at half time already… BUT it feels great to read all those comments on OX performance, this lad deserves it so much !! Apart from poor finishing during 1sr half, we had almost everything tonight : a solid (la) défense, strong and fluid midfield…. and speachless regarding our “motherf***n’… starboy” up front !!
This thing of “we should have scored x goals” never really works. At his peak, TH14 was scoring 48% of his chances.
You’re never going to score with all your chances.
What a disappointment, just 5 goals??
I thought we could have scored 7 or 8
Might’ve caused a riot though, probably best to keep it down to 5. Maybe 6 at a push.
Saying that, there weren’t enough people left in the stadium to cause a riot!
To all those who argued and the countless thumbdowners when i said Alexis can do what Aguero and Costa do and be a deadly striker….. Well?
they say money can’t buy u happiness. Well, it can buy u Ozil and Alexis, and that’s what happiness is made of.#COYG
Sanchez sending a signal to the league today! Looked like a promising starting X| with the mobile front three and Xhaka, Coquelin.
The Ox, Walcott, Sanchez & Ozil all making runs with or without the ball creates havoc for defenses. Who do you cover?
More of this, please!
Was the Ox’s best game for a while, had everything today and what a goal that was.
Alexis gets better every week, that dummy, audacious and clever even if there was a hint of offside.
But concerned at how much we let them have in and around the box, and for them to have scored one, well it flatters them as they were awful.
5-1, happy with that, but could have had a few more. On to the next one ?
Wow…just WOW Alexis Sanchez. Chamberlain also had a very good game, direct running and i think he released Alexis for a one on one in the first half also. Great game from the whole team and the subs who came on. i think we scored four goals once Ramsey came on. would not mind seeing a Iwobi, Chambo and Alexis front three. Made my day this win…COYG
‘Oouuuuuuuuooouuuu a-lex-is is on fireeeeee’
To to the tune of sex on fire. Can also double up for Alex oxlade-chamberlain if he keeps playing like that. ?
Really pleased for Ox…He was doing fairly well then shanked that chance and the ball went for a throw in.
Thought his head would drop but it didn’t..Scored a great goal and was a nuisance throughout..
The kind of pace he has is even more dangerous than Walcott and even Bellerin because he is stockier than the other two which allows him to just beast through 3-4 players at a time. Worked hard also and he was unlucky not to finish his chance at the end were every player seemed to get a touch.
Agree. At times his pace and stocky power is reminiscent of Alexis. Just needs to believe in himself
I liked that he kept shooting today despite various dark looks from other players.
I love my arsenal.. excellent three points.
It feels like the World is a beautiful place each time Arsenal won a match and scoring for fun while doing so.
A good result against a poor WHU side. But we won’t win the league with Theo Walnut in the starting line up. The guy does fuck all with the ball unless it’s a first time shot on goal. No other top side would put up with him.
He started the season on fire, he has tailed off a little but he is still a potent goal threat.
Agreed. He can be a goal threat (and I sincerely hope he scores lots of goals) but he doesn’t have a clue what to do with the ball if he’s not running through on goal and has options around him. I’d sooner see him gone.
Well played. The Ox, Xhaka, Monreal (first half especially), Kos and specially Alexis were superb today. If only we play like this more often. Also, great, City will be missing Fernandinho and Aguero for their match against us
Good comment, good name.
Fuck YEEES! i could get used to this…
I’d say we have that World Class Striker thing sorted.
Just a bit.
And goals are coming from the wings and the center of midfield too. So all in all we can’t complain.
But Alan Shearer said……
As long as Elneney is not playing, I am happy.
Was at the game, West Ham are useless and the West Ham fans are shocking onto the next one.
