Mohamed Elneny’s Egypt sealed safe passage to the knockout stages of the African Cup of Nations last night as they beat Ghana 1-0 to secure top spot in Group D.
A rasping free-kick by former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah, scored on 11 minutes, was enough to secure the three points and sets up a quarter-final showdown with Morocco on Sunday. The Black Stars also qualified and will play DR Congo.
Elneny played the full 90 minutes in the centre of the park. Given the timing of the next game, he’s unlikely to feature in Arsenal’s game with Watford on Tuesday even if Egypt exit the tournament.
Shame for Arsenal.
But good luck to him!
Elneny doing bits
God damn it! They look like might win it.
As an Egyptian, I hope they do. Due to the political and social situation in the last few years, seeing the decimation of the football league due to security issues. I think a win by Egypt would give a huge huge positive boost to the country and would be a great advert for the positive power of football around the world.
Salam! Never met a fellow Egyptian gooner save for my dad. Yet another example of the diversity at this club and in London generally
If we didn’t before, we have our team to support at the AFCON.
I know we need Elneny back, but a nice AFCON win would only be good for his confidence and for Arsenal.
Best of luck to Egypt!
Hope he will be back before the Chelsea game
Hope he does well but … we need him back
Would anyone slightly more informed than me be able to suggest whether its likely Egypt will beat Morocco? I know very little about either side, can’t think of a Moroccan player since the Halcyon days of Chamakh and Taarabt.
Would love to have Elneny back for Chelsea.
Egypt should beat Morocco. If they make it to the finals, El Neny will miss Chelsea.
I’m all for Egypt doing well but can we trade him for another player if we get any more injuries in the middle?
When will this AfCon finish
Nenny rocks.. You are the best in our team and keep going bro.. Dont listen to losers
