Via SBI Soccer, comes news that Gedion Zelalem’s loan at VVV Venlo has ended, after he joined up with the US U20’s men’s national team.
The U20 World Cup takes place in South Korea later this month, and the Arsenal man is part of the US squad for the tournament.
They face group games against Ecuador, Senegal and Saudi Arabia, and Zelalem has left Holland for the training camp ahead of those games.
After a moderately successful loan spell with Rangers last season, the midfielder has struggled to make much of an impact in the current campaign.
He made two EFL Cup appearances from the bench, before joining the Eerste Divisie club in January.
Since then he has made just one start, with eight appearances from the bench and scoring one goal, but only played a total of 271 minutes.
Perhaps it’s because VVV had a winning side, which gained promotion to the Eredivisie for next season, but such limited playing time doesn’t augur well for his Arsenal future.
He’s 20 now, and there are whispers that he could be set for a move to Germany in the summer.
Sorry, but he looks like another skinny little dinky.
i think he’s fallen a lot down the pecking order to have a good future at arsenal . ismael bennacer , maitland niles who all are more rounded than him and who are equally good at defending and attacking are all ahead of him in centre midfield position .
And all of them have no chance of getting a match in the next few seasons. For the 2 center midfield spots the current options are: Xhaka, Coq, Ramsey, Ox, Elneny, Cazorla and Wilshere. And it’s incredibly likely that a new midfielder will be bought in the summer. Brilliant player management!!!
Looking like this is another promising Arsenal kid heading the Gnabry way.Hopefully, he rediscovers his touch with the national team and that rekindles his Arsenal career (one can only hope).
Any good news!?
We should sell him and buy a new prospect. Him, Crowley, Akpom, they are getting too old for their levels.
Bummer. As an American Arsenal fan, I was hoping to see him break his way into the first team, but there are a lot of other youth prospects (Maitland-Niles, The Jeff, etc.) who seem more likely.
I hope that if he moves on, he finds a place in the Bundesliga or somewhere that will play him, for our national team’s sake.
Because of the font, I kept reading it as “Zelalem V W loan cut short” and I thought we had taken back his Jetta and told him to get his own car for the U20’s.
