Welbz on winning the cup, injuries and Wenger’s loyalty

Danny Welbeck talked to BT Sport’s Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard straight after Arsenal’s 2-1 FA Cup final win over Chelsea. He was, as you might expect, pretty chuffed to secure the trophy. Here’s what he had to say…

On winning…

It’s a great feeling, any trophy that you win it’s always a massive feeling. After a disappointing season in the league we wanted to finish on a high, this is great for us.

On his comeback from injury…

It’s been difficult. Injuries are part and parcel of football, you just have to deal with it positively. It’s very difficult at times, it’s a dark road and sometimes you can’t see the end of it. You have to dig deep and keep on going, make sure you do your rehab well and listen to the people around you and listen to people who have been through it before. I’m just so pleased to be here and to get the trophy.

On Arsene Wenger before the game…

As a team, collectively, with the management staff everybody was focused for the final. We had to approach it like it was any other game, play the game not the occasion. Today we put in an excellent performance and we’ve got this baby [the trophy].

On being anxious at half time after wasting opportunities…

Football is a game full of surprises and at 1-0 there was always an opportunity for them to come back into the game. With them equalising and then for us to go ahead again was great for us.

On working with Arsene Wenger…

Obviously, we’ve all worked with him for a few years, some of us longer than others. I can only speak on behalf of me, but since I’ve been at this club he’s been nothing but great for me. He’s been loyal and he’s always kept me positive through my injuries. He’s done massive things for me so for me to start in the final and take it [the trophy] home is a massive thing for me.

Danny you worked your arse off mate. Thank you.

Runcorn Gooner

That is the main point, how much effort he put in.
If AFC are to move forward and work as a team I think it is the end of the road for TW14. He has clearly become a luxury we cannot afford as he exposes our defence time and again.

Sell Theo, keep Perez. I can’t help but feel sorry for Perez. He doesn’t seem to have done much wrong when called upon. Whereas Theo has flattered to deceive for a decade.

LEFT08

Hold on a minute. Theo’s goals in the previous rounds took us to the final. He’s our top score in the cup this season (if I’m not mistaken)

AusGunner

At the same time, he’s been on the outer since the Hull game when he said they post-match that they wanted it more.

I think he’s a good squad player to keep around but it seems like the writing might be on the wall for Theo

AusGunner

I mean since the Crystal Palace game, I think

Heavenly Chapecoense

Luxury with 19 goals nonetheless.

Clock Ender

Amen to that!

@thejollygunner

Tremendous stuff. Loved the team performance, but also loved the collective “get in their faces” approach which has been lacking far too often in recent years. Winding up Costa, making clear to the ref that Moses dived, these are all things that help win big games and that sometimes we seem reluctant to do (particulary when compared to how other teams go about things). Another plus is how much we seem to enjoy the wide, open spaces of Wembley, and you’d almost wish we could play there every week. Think we go back there next year for a league fixture,… Read more »

That reminds me that Arsenal have now won the FA cup at Sp*rs home…
May the good times continue

goongot

if only he can sort his finishing we would have our very own aubameyang without spending 60million +1

Frode

He’ll be like a new signing…

Anonymarse

He always scored impressive goals but just not enough of them so far. Maybe next season.

Fuhgedaboudit l

Definitely needs to work on his finishing skills. If he can improve his finishing, we will have the striker we really need.

Cliff Bastin

“he doesn’t have the record of [Robin] Van Persie or [Wayne] Rooney and that is the standard. That is why we let him go – because of Falcao but also the youngsters who can fit in.”

– Van Gaal

Ahhah. Scores winning goal against them in FA cup. Hahahahhaha. FALCAO. Ahahhahahhahahaha

ForeignGooner

Despite missing easy chances, he usually scores against Man U. That’s enough reason for me to have him.

WELBZ you worked your hole off. You did us proud, happy to go to work with my head held high!

billybatts

Best Manc of all time.

bazza_wicks

every one in that team gave a 110% and the form of every player shone through nice to see danny get the nod and proved it was right, that was deffo the best team performance of the season we was a smooth lean fighting machine, silky skillful and focused all game

Heavenly Chapecoense

Adams had proven one of the worst manager in the world whenever he tried that. I think he wants a position in the media and trying to prove he is good at creating controversy.

He’s not one to take too seriously though much like Ian Wright.

Adams at least tried to put his money where his mouth is. But talk about not being able to coach out of a paper bag..Tony Adams with all due respect.:D

Wright on the money

Welbeck is a good player he gives you 100 percent every game, he can play up front and wide also he will run defenders all over the pitch.

Walcott is the same for me just his defencive work could be worked on plus both of their finishing could be better.

I would rather have a team of players that give 100 percent and work hard than lazy ones that give up when losing.

For me we need at least 5 signings and will have to spend over 200 million to get them.

Can’t see us spending that mind.

Mpls

Other criticism of Walcott aside, you can’t say Welbeck’s finishing is on par with Theo. Theo is a far better finisher. Its the thing he does best, really. That and make good, intelligent runs.

It’s just very hard to see where he fits in this formation because the center striker has never worked out with him.

Gooneropolis

If we go get that mythical striker this summer, Welbz would be our havoc wreaking ball of energy pulling guys out of position and mucking it up in the box. His work rate and nose for being in the right spots is there, just a marginal improvement in finishing and an extended run of health would see him net 12-15 goals next season – especially with a striker to feed off of a striker to feed off of!

Well done, danny! Can’t help but love dat guy.

santori

Such a hard worker Danny. His pressing off ball made a huge difference. That said, he has plenty of room for improvement in the fnishing department (and should get better). Also he needs to time his runs slightly better, should have got to tap in the Ozil effort cleared off the line by Cahill. At the moment, we do not have the complete package up top. I think both Giroud and Welbeck offer different qualities which are useful depending on the nature of opponents faced. Welbeck of course has the package to develop further whilst I think we should still… Read more »

Arsepedant

We need a combination of Giroud and Welbeck, someone who combines each of their obvious talents without their individual weaknesses. And I think that player is Kylian Mbappe. Splash the cash for him and our striker position is set for the next decade.

Teryima Adi

Once he works on his finishing, Welbeck would be unstoppable.
