Birmingham set to loan Arsenal full-back duo

According to the Mirror, Birmingham City are on the verge of signing Cohen Bramall and Carl Jenkinson on season-long loan deals.

After the defeat to Stoke City on Saturday Arsene Wenger reaffirmed his intention to trim the first team squad having struggled this summer to move on players who’ve little chance of playing regularly.

Jenkinson, who has three years left on his current contract at the Emirates, nearly joined Crystal Palace in January but saw a move break down over his wage demands. He featured a couple of times for the Gunners last season but looked short of confidence after returning from a long-term knee problem.

A move to St Andrew’s would be Jenkinson’s third loan move since moving to Arsenal in 2011. He’s previously spent two seasons at West Ham United. Like fellow full-backs Kieran Gibbs and Mathieu Debuchy, it appears we’ve struggled to find a suitor willing to sign him on a permanent basis.

The decision to loan Cohen Bramall is firmly rooted in a desire to get the youngster more first team football.

The 21-year-old was signed in January from non-League Hednesford Town and was included in Arsenal tour of Sydney, Shanghai and Beijing. Given he’s behind Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac in the left-back pecking order, a move to the rough and tumble of the Championship makes sense. Let’s hope Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp gives him some game time.

Lucas Perez, Calum Chambers, Jack Wilshere, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Chuba Akpom could also leave in the final 10 days of the transfer window. As could the aforementioned Gibbs and Debuchy.

Emi Martinez (loan to Getafe), Takuma Asano (loan to Stuttgart), Wojciech Szczesny (Juventus) and Gabriel (Valencia) have already left. Academy players Marc Bola and Stephy Mavididi are also on loan.

Don’t we need them as CBs?

FFS! We need Brammall to play centre back!

How would you feel if you were Jenkinson, Debuchy or any of the other ‘undesirables’?
Unwanted by your club and unable to find anyone else wanting to take a chance on you. It can’t just be about training and collecting a cheque. It would mess with your psyche. Life of a pro!

Jack

I’m sure lots of clubs are interested in them as players, but these teams won’t break their wage structures to match the wages they collect at Arsenal. Says more about the player’s motivation than anything that they are happy to stay and collect their contracts rather than move and play but earn less.

Crash Fistfight

I wouldn’t if I were them. It’s not their fault that the club chooses not to play them.

Donald\'s Trump

It’s a job though. Would you work for less? If you’re destined to be mediocre than why not stay on more money?
It’s not like he’s going to win trophies with Palace.

Don

Jenkinson should be long gone by now. It’s been evident for years that he’s not good enough for Arsenal. It’s obvious his high wages mean he’d rather stay the duration of his contract at Arsenal than be sold to a team at his level. I hope that Birmingham have the option to buy and he does well for them so that they exercise that option.

Rich

I respect the players that want to play.
But completely understand the ones who don’t want to take a pay cut to do so.
Hopefully they both go there, play regularly and have blinding seasons.
Good luck lads

Remember when Arsenal’s problem was too few players rather than too many players? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

It seems we go from one extreme to another. No balance.

London

Wenger has struggled to manage this squad. It seems he tries to control every aspect of the club which is why we are lagging behind

Ciaran kelly

Any player we want to get rid off needs to be made to assist with Gunnersaurus on march days, can handle ball retrieval and such things until they realise it’s better to play rather than Winston Bogard it

Tim

Jenkinson has 3 years left? How is that possible?

And we wonder why we can’t shift deadwood. Reward them with mega contract for mediocre loan performances, while letting our stars run down their deals. What a mess.

To be fair it wasn’t based on mediocre loan performance. It was based on being in that project ” British core”

They would help us dominate the league as their heads don’t get turned by money.

Connoisseur

Given he’s [Bramall] behind Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac in the left-back pecking order (…)
Get to grips with reality – that should read behind Oxlade – Chamberlain and Bellerin. Monreal and Kolasinac are centre halves now. Sigh.

Sideshow_bob

Why would we sell Chambers now that Gabriel is gone? Unless we’re buying someone else which o doubt

I Am Gunnaaaaa

If Jenkinson is going on loan to Birmingham then we are surely helping cover his wages. There’s no way they can afford his wage. So this hasn’t really helped unless Wenger actually sees a future for him at Arsenal…

Jalex

You reckon Wilshere will leave too? Not heard much about him recently and Wenger said he wants him to stay. I personally hope he stays and attempts to rebuild his career via the Europa League. He could get some good opportunities to shine there.
