The FA have confirmed that Jack Wilshere’s suspension, applicable to Premier League 2 fixtures, has been reduced from three to two games.
The England international was shown a straight red card on Monday night when he featured for Arsenal’s under-23s in a 4-3 win over Manchester City. The 25-year-old reacted angrily to a late challenge and a subsequent scuffle carried on down the tunnel.
Arsenal decided that a three game suspension, even though it doesn’t affect his participation in first team matches, was too harsh and appealed on grounds of wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment. While Wilshere lost his case for wrongful dismissal it has been agreed that a three-game ban is excessive.
As a result, Wilshere will be sidelined for the under-23s against Liverpool (tomorrow) and Manchester United on 8 September. He might have wanted to use the games to build his fitness following his fracture leg, but he’ll have to do that in the gym and on the training ground instead.
It remains to be seen whether Wilshere will still be an Arsenal player when the transfer window closes this time next week. Into the final year of his contract and with playing time limited, he could be sold.
Earlier today, Arsene Wenger made a point of supporting his Academy graduate, saying:
“You know how much I love Jack and his talent. I started him at the age of 17, but today in the football world you need a consistent presence.
“What is at stake for Jack is not his quality, not his talent, not his determination, it’s his consistent presence at the top and I hope he can do that.
“Nobody questions his quality here.”
It remains to be seen whether ‘insert any player name here’ will still be an Arsenal player when the transfer window closes this time next week.
I can fucking guarantee you that Walcott will still be one. Sadly thats about it.
A comment to be liked for its truth but it’s still a depressing thought…
Nice decision from the FA to be fair.
Announce Draxler please Arsene. Let’s go to a back four to make room?
Draxler is a good player but he’s no player that will turn a good team into a very good team. I watched him regularly when he was playing in Germany and if you think Walcott can go missing in games expect even worse from him in a lot of games. He scored quite a few in Paris but the French league surely isn’t the strongest. I wouldn’t have a problem with Wenger signing him as he’s still relatively young and has undoubtably a lot of talent. But I have the feeling we need something really special to challenge properly and… Read more »
Your opinion is not a bad one but who would you like to him to (Arsen) to sign rather? someone who is strong and quick.
I would like him to go and buy a fucking DM after ten years.
Im wondering, is it time for arsene to bring the 442 back? Cech, bell/m-n,sack/hold,kos/must, on/kola Ox/wal, ram, xhaka, welbz/kola laca/ozil, giroud/alexi Its better basically with either rambo or xhaka and a new signing unless ramsey stays behind play a lot. jack, coq, elneny as cover I guess. Laca and giroud, sanchez are both capable of dropping deeper AND leading the line so they fill nicely for each other, ozil is ozil. Not saying.thus is the way to win the league but it kinda fits the players we have better. On a side note id personally love to see jack and… Read more »
We will get over-run in midfield. We are too light weight as a team overall and we can’t afford to play with fewer midfielders.
Did I mention over-run meanwhile.
Pat4 is whom you will need to play 2 in the middle.
You don’t get consistent presence at the top by getting sent-off for stupid reasons when you are finally not injured (wasn’t even for a useful tactical foul). Should have tried harder to get a midfielder this summer.
Can I vote down twice?
Too bad down votes don’t give us money, otherwise negative opinions about Wilshere would have got us that CM already.
I had no idea that money was the only obstacle to a new CM
I know this is off topic. But I’d like to vent with fellow gooners. The Fuck is up with that draw?
We get Bayern or Barca every year. Then United and Liverpool take a couple years holiday and come back to joke groups.
If that’s means spuds got a hard group then I am happy!
Oooh, it hadn’t crossed my mind that there’s a real possibility we meet them in knockout stages of the europa league. That is an equal parts exciting and horrifying prospect to be honest.
Do the bottom finishers get to play the prestigious Europa?
They are thrown out of Europe I presume. Though I would like them to have those extra games and the Wembley curse to continue!
Unless something has changed, the 3rd place team in the Champs League group enters the knockout stages of the Europa Leaugue. Although I imagine it’s similar to the CL where *I think* two teams from the same league can’t play each other until the semi finals, or it might be quarter finals. Can you imagine a semis or even an actual final against spurs? I would be crapping my pants
Correction – it’s the teams with the 4 best records of the 8 teams that finish 3rd in the CL group stages.
spexit
Who cares what group they’re in? I can tell you right now that no English side will reach the semi final.
I don’t know, that Man United squad is basically 70s Brazil.
No, you can’t ?
I can tell you spuds wont. And long may their form at wembley continue.
somebody say amen……….
Spurs are fuxked. At least both united and liverpool have one really shit away game to negotiate before prem footy at the weekend.
Think there’s a place for wilshere in this squad till Santi comes back at least
Big deal the bloody card should have been rescinded
