Arsenal have announced that Calum Chambers has signed a new deal with the club.
The 22 year old has signed a two year extension to his current deal which will keep him at the club until 2021.
Chambers signed from Southampton in the summer of 2014 for a fee of £16m, but after a bright start to his career with the Gunners found himself on the fringes of the team.
He had a successful loan spell at Middlesbrough last season and although widely tipped to depart during the summer, Arsenal rebuffed a £20m+ bid from Crystal Palace and kept him around.
He has only played 45 minutes this season due to a hip injury but is expected back soon.
Via his Instagram account, Chambers reacted to the new deal, saying, “Proud to sign a new contract with Arsenal. I know I’m still a young player and I want to have my best years playing for this football club.
“I want to win as many trophies with Arsenal as possible. I’m going to repay the fans for the faith they’ve shown in me. Can’t wait to get going again. #COYG”
It’s certainly a show of faith in him, let’s hope he can find his way again.
Good lad, still very young for a defender.
Hope he steps up.
Great news! I think he’s really promising but may have been burned by our manager over playing him too soon due to a number of injuries in that position. Let’s not forget how good he looked in his first couple of games for us, and I think his loan spell last season would have benefitted him immensely. CB is a concerning position for us in the future with BFG set to retire at the end of the season and overlooked by the manager unless we have no other options, koscienly north of 30 and struggling with his Achilles, nacho also… Read more »
Huge
What’s not to like
This is the best time to stake a claim in the starting line-up. With Koscielny not being to play more than once a week, Mustafi knackered in the short term, Holding learning the ropes and big Per retiring at the end of the season, a series of good performances could see him become a permanent fixture in the starting XI.
Hope he does just that.
With Per retiring and Kos struggling with his achilles, we need him and Holding to step-up.
That’s positive news, let’s hope he gets fit ASAP so we can see how he gets on in the back 3.
At an age where he needs regular football.
He’s extremely slow over the first few yards, particularly for a club like ours who’s biggest weakness is conceding on the counter.
I’d have put both Chambers+Holding out on loan this summer.
Too slow to be a fullback but not for CB. He’s a lot faster than people give him credit for. Personally think the back 3 suits him perfectly, let’s see how he gets on!
I do agree with you, but everyone says ‘he’ll be good in a back three’ when they really mean he’s not good enough for a back two. Surely every centre back is better in a back three than a two…
I know Chambos one for the future and I hope he makes it. But I’m not at all convinced the quality of our centre backs are anywhere near good enough to get us where we want to be.
He had no problem with pace at Soton at fullback.;)
And who would you play cb this weekend if you had done that?
Call me crazy… but I would have used the mythical transfer market.
How many players do you want to increase the ’25 max limit’ to then?
We would be in quite a predicament if they were loaned out
Rich mate, what is your problem? I get Arsenal are not at the level we all want, but a young English centre back signing a new contract is nothing to complain about. if he doesn’t make the cut, we sell him for a higher price than we would if we didn’t give him a new deal.
Try and actually support our team rather than complain at ever single thing
I Don’t think he’s good enough or has the right characteristics.
I use forums to give my honest assessment and to engage in discussion.
My support for Arsenal and all players inside the stadium is 100% apart from the Kroenke chants,(which there aren’t enough of) because I realise screaming and moaning at a player/manager is generally counterproductive.
Because we disagree, you think you have the right to try and silence me on an open forum?
Grow up will you.
He’s not trying to silence you – he’s trying to get you to change your behavior.
Exactly.
I agree with you that everyone deserves a voice. I also agree that negativity and pessimism are subversive and idiotic.
I’m not trying to silence you. I asked you a question actually, the exact opposite of silencing. You seem like a passionate Arsenal fan and you have a right to express your opinion. But I totally disagree with you on a lot of the comments you post here. We have a lot of problems but I don’t see Chambers signing a new deal as anything but a positive.
I’m totally with you on Kronke out, he is a cunt.
A lot of the goals we concede are on the counter. (Usually the first, or only one) Rambo likes to get forward. Xhaka covers a lot of ground but he’s not the quickest. I just don’t think having a defender with little recovery pace for the way we set up is ideal. It’s nothing personal, I think playing for a team who sits deeper and more compact he could be a good player. But we don’t really play that way. The 0-0 with Chelsea was an abnormality. I think Holding should be out on loan because we’re an injury away… Read more »
I sense ‘Fatgooner’ among us. I do miss his gloomy silly posts sometimes 🙂
Fatgooner was the one who got me addicted to arseblog
Oh wow! Some good news for a change.
Fantastic news. I’m optimistic about our cb “prospects”. Chambo, Bielik & Holding. Health, good coaching & some regular playing time. Could be onto something here
Good coaching lol
Bielik might end up being a holding mid.
Hope!!
He should get a look in.
Everybody’s favorite Holding is a talent but clearly he still has a learning curve.
Chambers (IF Wenger is to persist with converting him to a Cback) has great opportunity at the moment with Mustafi potentially out for a spell and Koscielny not completely recovered.
Time to play him is now. Either Holding or Chambers with Per chaperoning as sweeper, Monreal covers other flank. I think HOlding has had some chances, lets give Calum a go.
Santori, you keep talking about Arsene converting him to a centre back, where do you get this from? It’s where Boro played him. It’s where he’s played underage from England. He doesn’t have the pace or stamina to play full back. Why do you keep insisting he is one???
He was a FB at Sotton before he joined us…
He left them when he was 19 to be fair, more than 3 years ago. Lots of young players spend time at full back before moving inside. His ex youth coach at Southampton has said he was always going to eveeventually be a centre half.
But he was an FB and generally we appear to be using him as a CB. So ‘Converted’ isn’t an inappropriate term to use.
Converting, not converted was the term used…there is a significant difference
I wouldn’t get too excited, Wenger will probably sell him in January
Great news. Here’s hoping the Chamberding partnership will anchor our defence to many a great title winning campaigns in the years to come….
The Holding Chambers surely?
Great news. COYG
Wenger has to give him a run of games when he’s fit.
*sigh of relief*
Good quality defender
Well, I’m very surprised by this news, I have to say. But good news all the same. I hope we get to see him play some more minutes; seems a level-headed guy.
Good news!! His poor games were at right back which clearly isn’t his position. He’s calm on the ball, seems to read the game well and will only improve. If the team can keep playing well then it will be an easier learning period for him but he roughed it out well at Boro so my hopes are high.
Agreed. I never want to see him at right back again unless there is no other option. He is a centre half, absolutely no question.
Why? Ox complain about his pace but we see the Ox for all his pace is not efficient. Chambers by trade at Soton impressed as a right back. he may not be suited as wingback but if we should need to revert to 4 at the back, he is a very viable option. Last season Gabriel played at Rback. As a Cback, he was naturally cautious. I thought he did decent but of course curtailed our movement going forward at times. Chambers is more natural going forward and attacking in similar role. The issue of course is at current system,… Read more »
I’m all for differing opinions, but seriously? It almost seems like you’re confusing Chambers with someone else?
Why the thumbs down?????
Congrats, Chambers. The future is bright for you.
He hasn’t done enough yo impress yet but I’m glad we haven’t given up on him either. He was a big prospect when he signed and is still young. From that young Southampton production line at the back, Clyne has established himself but Shaw is nowhere near the starting 11 than Chambers is and our guy is younger as well.
Neither has Holding.
Chambers had a decent loan spell last season.
His close control is good and he has an eye for passes going forward.
Yes, excellent close control and poise for a young CB. Maybe you have actually seen him play! (see my reply to your above comment)
Congrats Calum. You almost never get the ‘full package’ when it comes to young defenders but I feel he has all the ingredients to be a very good player if he gets a sustained run of matches, which I dont think is far away.
Its a learning curve. IF you don’t play them, they will never progress.
Its more a question of managing it well bc the road forward blooding young players can also be costly for results.
BUT at 22yrs, he is closer to the finish article than Holding (albeit Rob is ahead of the curve)
I take your last sentence to mean that Holding has realized less of his potential thus far, yet probably has a higher ceiling that Callum. If so, I agree.
He is actually pretty deadly in the opposition penalty box. We might get a few goals out of the trio of holding, mert and chambers
He’s a fullback by natural position. He played taht position for Soton very effectively…which was why we signed him in the first place.
Wenger tried to go on another project (to be fair he has been successful in most conversions) but he now has Holding as well.
So no reason for Chambers not to revert to fullback as back up AND also as right side of back 3 in competition with Holding. BOTH options are available.
Wow, is that Ivan handling the deals now? Calum signs, Mesut’s going in the right direction…
Its time him and Holding play and if we play 3…at the back playing them together with a more experienced player would get them forming a partnership for the long haul.
Probably going on another loan then
Really delighted at this news.
Come on Callum!….we’re all behind you.
Glad he is staying but, could think of a few others who should stay.
well hopefully a sign we’re learning from our mistakes. not quite convinced as yet however!
Thought it was really strange when he was linked with a move away over the summer, a highly versatile, young player with bags of potential. Glad we’re keeping him and he’s happy to stay
