Last week stories emerged that Marc Overmars had reached an agreement to return to Arsenal next summer, in some kind of unspecified executive capacity.
The Gunners are looking to fill the gap left the the club’s chief negotiator Dick Law who left at the end of September to spend more time in the USA with his family.
The former Arsenal man and Dutch international is currently Director of Football at Ajax, and on paper at least his return ticks a lot of boxes. The club need somebody to take some of the burden off Arsene Wenger, and put in place structures for the future when the Frenchman leaves the post he’s held since 1996.
However, speaking to NOS, Overmars denied there any agreement had been made and seemed to reiterate his commitment to Ajax.
“I feel good at Ajax,” he’s reported to have said, “and there’s no contact with other clubs.”
It tallies with what Wenger said last week when asked about a possible return to north London for the double winner.
“At the moment he’s a director at Ajax,” he said. “We have always been in touch, yes, but at the moment no.”
Sounds like a non-story.
Argh, going to be that guy again. But who would want to come while Wenger is at the helm? Would he relinquish any of his absolute power? Is there anything they could actually stamp their authority on? Is there even really a role for anything other than feeble yes man #7? And most importantly, are these rhetorical questions ever going to end?
It must be maddening working as a director alongside AW. I picture Wenger ordering dinner in a restaurant and doing that thing where he asks questions about every dish, makes the waiter repeat the specials, only to order a steak and potatoes.
I’m trying to be rational but when I was a young boy in the 90s I adored Overmars, so I really want there to be some truth to this obvious fantasy.
I love that shirt. I had one, only for something blue in the washing machine to run and end up with pale blue sleeves 🙁
Thanks but no thanks. Simone or klopp as coach at arsenal. Il give the top rol to Bergkamp fuck overmars. We need to breath fire at arsenal
