Petr Cech hopes Arsenal’s away form is turning a corner after Sunday’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Burnley.
The Gunners suffered Premier League losses on the road, against Stoke, Liverpool and Watford, before mid-October and also tasted defeat at the Etihad earlier this month leading to criticism that Arsene Wenger’s squad have a mental block away from home. In contrast, the Gunners have won all six of the league games at the Emirates.
Speaking to the Evening Standard after Alexis Sanchez sealed a late three points at Turf Moor, Cech noted: “We said that we wanted to carry on after the big win at home against Tottenham and we needed to back it up.
“Apart from the Everton win away, and a good [0-0] result at Chelsea, we haven’t been getting results away from home.
“But we got a big win here and now, hopefully, we’ve turned the corner in terms of the away games. We need to carry on with our home form and if we can get as many away points as well then we will climb up the table.
“We just showed that when we play on top of our game we are solid, organised and manage to stick to the plan, and if we do that we can win any game.
“But as I said, we have had a lack of consistency in games at times. We’ve switched off at times and we’ve paid for that in the away games particularly this season.
“But we work to our goals, try to improve in every game and we have to keep going like that.”
Arsenal’s latest win takes them into the top four above Liverpool and Sp*rs but they still have work to do if they are to close the 12 point gap on league leaders Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s men are already being treated as champions-elect having extended their unbeaten start to the season with a win at Huddersfield.
While not ideal, Cech isn’t too fazed about the situation, “It’s only 13 games in, that’s the most important thing, and there’s so many points to be won. You don’t reach your goals after 13 games, you need to carry on for 38 games and show consistency.
“There can be plenty of twists in the table and you see yourselves climb after two wins then have a draw and fall out of the top four pretty quick. It’s packed in there, and I think it will be until the end of the season.”
I hope so. The team is looking a lot more focussed and if we can win at Burnley we can win almost anywhere.
I hope so too. I know that we got a last minute penalty winner which will take the gloss off of it for some people, but for me, that was a really important win. Burnely are flying right now, they don’t have any midweek fixtures, so they had a really fresh team who were well prepared for our visit. So to turn up there and come home with all three points is a perfect way to follow up last weekends top drawer result over Spurs. I think this is the first time we have most ot all the players fit except santi. But this was the problem always having too many players injured and not able to challenge at all. I dont think we are going to challenge for the title we still have our inconsistency of not keeping focus on a stretch of games. But glad one hurdle of having too many player on sidelines is resolved.
I seem to remember us being unbeaten away from home in 2001/02. Obviously that gets overshadowed by the Invincibles season, but defences do win you titles. We really need to start playing more away games like we did yesterday – being hard to beat above all else. We have the quality to nick results here and there. We don’t need to dominate every game. Of the three decent results we’ve had from seven away games this season, we’ve only managed two clean sheets, against Chelsea and Burnley. A win on Wednesday against Huddersfield would put us on 28 points from 14 games, which in old money is “Championship Form”, i.e. win your home games and draw your away games. These days, that can be tweaked to “Champions League Form” which is what is required to make the top 4. Let’s keep this streak going! #COYG

Just a fun sidenote, The Lord Bendtner himself picked up the top goal scorer award in Norwegian Tippeligaen with 19 goals for the season in 27 appearances. He also picked up goal of the season award and his team Rosenborg which is also my local team won the league. So cheers for Rosenborg and praise to the Lord! 🙂 And you don’t have to tell me it’s a shit league, i watch it every week so i should know..
